AS Bapco moves forward at a rapid pace to build its new US$ 120million Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Project at the downstream of the Refinery’s existing Oil Separators and IAF Units, the project has completed 500,000 man-hours worked without any Lost Time Injury (LTI). The achievement was commemorated and outstanding achievers were recognised for their efforts. Deputy Chief Executive Refining and Marketing Mr Gordon Smith expressed his deep satisfaction on the accomplishment of this milestone as Chairman of the EHSC. Mr Smith pointed out that the project had many such milestones to achieve as it progresses towards commissioning and it would definitely be possible if all the staff adhered to Bapco Osools and the Four Keys of Safety. The WWTP Project expects to reach the one Million man-hours mark without a LTI

by March 2012. Bapco targets to complete the project without any LTI clocking a total of about 3.5 million man-hours under a team which is dedicated and has a disciplined attitude towards safety at work. On this occasion, General Manager Major Engineering Projects Mr A Jabbar A Karim also congratulated the WWTP Project Team and commended their safety consciousness especially since the WWTP Project has its own set of challenges such as difficult soil conditions, proximity to high H2S concentration zones, deep excavations, etc. In his vote of thanks, he quoted a famous saying which is “Coming together….is a beginning; Staying together….is progress; and Working together….is success”. He urged each and every member of the team to strive towards the goal of 3.5 million man-hours without LTI till project completion.

BAPCO and its joint venture partners’ Nogaholding and Neste Oil of Finland started the production of high end Group III lubricant base oils from its recently commissioned new Lube Base Oil Plant at its Sitra Refinery on October 6, 2011. This is the first plant in the Gulf region producing such high quality lubricant base oils. These products marketed under the JV brand names of NB3043 and NB3080 are in great demand in Western Europe and the US. The products are stored

at the Sitra Product storage facility and are shipped from the Bapco Wharf. Neste Oil is lifting the products. The first ship, “Sky Dream” arrived at Bapco Wharf for loading the products on November 26, 2011. The loading of 18,000 metric tons was completed at the early hours of November 28, 2011 and the ship departed later in the day. The final destination of this shipment is Neste Oil’s export and distribution terminal at Antwerp in Belgium.

ENERGISING THE NATION BAPCO is a unique company, which has never

stood still. The rst to discover oil in the Arabian peninsula in 1932, it started exporting in 1934, and re ning in 1936.

Since then the company has helped shape the modern Kingdom of Bahrain, not simply through the generation of wealth, but through the develop-ment of Bahrain’s manpower. Many of this highly skilled and sought-after elite now occupy senior positions in government and industry.

More than 80 years after the company was es-tablished, the adventure continues with new ambi-tions in exploration, new initiatives in oil and gas eld development, and new global markets open-ing up with the completion of the refinery’s $725-million (Dh2.668-billion) Low Sulphur Die-sel Plant. The company can now export ultra-low sulphur diesel to those countries with the most stringent environmental standards.

Environmental protection plays as an impor-tant part in the company’s $1 billion-plus invest-ment programme and with the commissioning of the $151 million Re nery Gas Desulphurisation Plant (RGDP) in January 2009, the air quality will be further improved.

THE BAHRAIN PETROLEUM COMPANYBAPCO, wholly-owned by the Government of

Bahrain, is engaged in the oil industry including re ning, distribution of petroleum products and natural gas, sales and exports of crude oil and re- ned products.

The company owns a 260,000 barrel-a-day re nery, storage facilities for more than 14 million barrels, a marketing terminal, and a marine termi-nal for its petroleum products. Ninety- ve per cent of re ned products are exports.

BAPCO’s prime customers for crude oil and re ned products are based in the Middle East, In-dia, the Far East, South East Asia and Africa.

REFINING The Bahrain Re nery — one of the largest in

the Middle East and the oldest in the GCC — re- nes over 260,000 barrels of crude every day.

About one-sixth of this crude originates from Bahrain Field, the remainder is pumped from Sau-di Arabia in pipelines extending 27 kilometres over land and a further 27 kilometres under the

sea before reaching the northwest coastline of Bahrain.

STORAGEThere are more than 170 storage tanks at dif-

ferent sites with a total capacity of over 14 million barrels.

PRODUCTS Lique ed Petroleum Gas (LPG), Naphtha,

Gasoline, Kerosene, Aviation Turbine Fuel, Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel, Heavy Lube Distillate, Fuel Oil and Asphalt.

MARKETINGBAPCO exports crude oil to world markets and

sells petroleum products locally and internation-ally. It also supplies and sells aviation fuel at the

Bahrain International Airport through its a liate, The Bahrain Aviation Fueling Company (BAFCO), in which the company is a 60 per cent shareholder. The company also provides the full requirements of natural gas to the power generating plants and other industries in the country.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT BAPCO is pressing ahead with its ambitious

human resource management programme to en-sure that the skills of its workforce match the tech-nological and business demands of this new mil-lennium. In addition, its scholarship and sponsorship programmes support more than 300 students in higher education in Bahrain and abroad.

ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH AND SAFETYProtection of the environment continues to be

a major focus of the company’s policy. In line with best practice, BAPCO has created an EHS policy that integrates the functions of occupational health, industrial safety and environment.

A founder member of the Regional Clean Sea Organisation (RECSO), the company remains at the forefront of technical expertise in oil spill re-sponse. A clearly set out policy, a range of protec-tive clothing and equipment, full training and strict monitoring form BAPCO’s ongoing commitment to the prevention and control of accidents and emergencies. The company has worked up to 12 million employee-hours without lost-time acci-dent.

Surging since eight decadesBAPCO is engaged in the oil industry including re ning, distribution of petroleum products and natural gas, sales and exports of crude oil and re ned products

IN December the contestants in the Weight Loss Competition (Lighten Up) attended an exercise presentation by Fitness First personal trainer and exercise lecturer. Over 80 contestants attended the presentations and all received a free exercise DVD. Up to December 13, 139 contestants had attended their second weigh-in and lost 280kg (2.11%) of their body weight. The Health Promotion Committee is extremely proud of all those who are sticking with the competition and their current results and would like to wish them lots of luck for the rest of

the competition. Participants are remindered that they should weigh-in at least every four weeks to remain in the competition. These weigh-ins take place on Tuesdays in Awali hospital and Thursdays in the Refinery Clinic. Please refer to the timetable for the correct times. So far there have been three weekly walks in Princess Sabeeka Park and they are proving to be very popular. As a reminder to all Lighten Up contestants, the walks take place every Monday at 4pm for one hour. The aim of the

session is exercise and fun. There is a mixture of walking, jogging, stretches and toning exercises. All fitness levels are encouraged to join; there is no need to register just turn up on the day. The next event for the “Lighten Up” contestants will be the Bahrain City Centre walks, which will take place every Saturday in January. The aim of these walks is to encourage and maintain exercise in a climate controlled environment. We ask that all contestants reserve their place for this walk by phoning Ext 5066.

HE Minister of Energy, Chairman of National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA) and Chairman of Bapco Board Dr Abdulhussain bin Ali Mirza said although Bahrain is small producer and consumer in the bigger scheme of world energy balances – it is big in the implementation of all the ingredients (cooperation, innovation and investment). “In order to supply the increasing demand of oil, we entered into a JV with Occidental Petroleum of USA and Mubadala Development of Abu Dhabi to form Tatweer Petroleum, which will ultimately treble the production of oil from our 79 years old Bahrain field, and double the production of gas through the use of Enhanced Oil Recovery technology. This involves the investment of US$15 billion over the next 20 years,” He said.HE the Minister was speaking at the official opening of the 20th World Petroleum Congress (WPC) which took place in Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) from December 4 until December 8, 2011. The congress was inaugurated by HH the Amir of Qatar Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.HE Dr Mirza also said, “In order to supply the world market with environmentally friendly products, Bahrain commissioned in 2007 its hydrocracker and its capable of producing low sulphur diesel meeting the highest international standard.”Bapco took part in this international event which attracted pioneering oil and gas companies from around the world.

Bapco’s delegation headed by HE the Minister consisted of Public Relations Acting Manager Naji Ahmed, Events Management Superintendent Fahad Shamsan, PR Officer Mohammed Bahzad and English Editor Farishta Saeed. HE the Minister along with Qatar’s Minister of Oil Mohammed Al Sada visited Bapco’s booth and thanked all the participants for their hard work and team efforts. The booth was visited by many delegates and exhibitors from Arab and foreign countries who all praised Bapco’s reputation as a solid oil and gas company with professional and friendly staff. Adnoc Public Relations Manager Rashid Al Zaabi HE Dr Mirza’s speech at the opening ceremony was very informative and useful. “HE the Minister talked about Bahrain’s present and future plans in the oil and gas field and covered a lot of issues of concern to all the delegates in this event,” said Mr Al Zaabi. “I am very impressed with the work done by Bapco and I am surely glad to be able to meet the delegates representing this reputed company in this congress.” International Gas Union (IGU) Secretary General Torstein Indrebo said while visiting the booth, “We are at this event to promote our World Gas Conference 2012 which will take place in Norway and to discuss in the session about the global gas issues.

“We are meeting with a lot of participants from the industry and Bapco is one of the companies we are communicating with in regards to the gas market,” said Mr Inderbo. His colleague Energix Strategy Ltd Managing Director Ieda Gomes said Bapco as a company should be very proud of itself. “I have dealt with Bapco before and from my experience I will say that the company delivers whatever it promises on time.” ABB United Arab Emirates President Bjarte Pedersen said the company has been participating in WPC for many years. “We are here in Qatar to promote ABB solutions and technologies to the oil and gas industry and we are happy that this international event is taking place in this country because it is giving us specific focus into the challenges of the oil and gas industry in this region.” AmbreCTL Chairman Neill Arthur said the company is going to start a Clean Fuel project in Bahrain.“We represent an Australian company which has invented a new technology for removing sulphur from liquid petroleum streams instead of using a very expensive procedure in a refinery you can the put the dirty diesel or the dirty jet fuel in this process and make a very clean product at very cheap price,” he said. “we are interested to get Bahrain involved not only in the adoption of the technology which is more efficient use of the capital but as an investment proposition and maybe Bahrain can lead the way in the region.”

THE OHSAS 18001 is a comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) management system designed to enable organisations to control OH&S risks and improve their health and safety performance. Controlling risks means that accidents and ill-health will be reduced; personal injury claims will be prevented; damage to equipment and loss of productivity will be avoided; and the company will meet its ethical and moral obligations to the work force and community. DNV conducted the fourth periodic audit from November 22 until 24, 2011. There were a total of 16 findings including four Note-Worthy Efforts; two Opportunity for Improvements; eight Observations and two Minor non-conformances. On the last day, Bapco management attended a briefing on the audit results.

Noteworthy efforts at the Wharf included control of contractual diver’s competency checks and in maintenance a good performance was noted on close out of work orders. Additional noteworthy efforts were identified at SD&MM with operational controls of contractor activities and safety inspections being well demonstrated. Conversion of all Bapco product MSDS’s to the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) format gained praise for FH&S. Congratulations went out to Retails Services Section (Local Marketing Department) who has now been included into the scope of OHSAS 18001:2007 certification. Well done to all involved. Next year will see the fifth periodic Audit for OHSAS 18001 with recertification due in November 2012.

• One Lost Time and four First Aid Injuries were reported during November 2011. In addition, one reportable and one non-reportable fire incident were reported during November 2011. Till the end of November 2011, there have been six Lost Time, 47 First Aid Injuries and two occupational ill health cases.• The Lost Time Injury (LTI) occurred when a contractor employee sustained a fracture to his right leg when a heavy electrical stand fell on his right leg as he slipped and lost his balance whilst bringing down the heavy electrical stand to the floor. • There were six vehicle accidents in November out of which four involved Contractors. A number of vehicle accidents are happening whilst reversing; the EHSC will be discussing and formulating an action plan in order to eliminate/reduce the number of vehicle accidents during reversing. The traffic violation points system introduced in August appears to have arrested the sharp increase in vehicle accidents seen during the first half of the year. A total of 95 violation points have been issued to

date and several drivers have suffered the consequence of accumulating four points.• Eight environmental incidents and one oil spill were reported during November. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) currently stands at 5.3 versus a target of seven.• A presentation was made by 12 x 12 team on the lesson learnt and the key achievements of the campaign, the EHSC congratulated the team on the good work done including the introduction of the “4 Keys To Safety”. • The annual management review of the Environmental Management System (EMS) ISO 14001 was presented at the meeting with the purpose to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy and effectives. The key environmental achievements and opportunities for improvement were identified with a number of recommendations to achieve continual improvement. The EHSC endorsed the recommendations. The ISO 14001 re-certification audit was conducted by Bureau Veritas from November 28 till November 30 and it is pleasing to report that Bapco has been re-certified to the internationally recognised Environmental Management Standard ISO 14001:2004 Standard for another three years. Well done to all on this significant achievement.• Finally, as this was the last meeting of 2011, I would like to thank all the members of the EHSC for their continued support and commitment and I look forward to working with the EHSC to achieve excellence in our EHS performance in line with our vision and mission statement.

BAPCO’S Control Operator in 4ACDU and Kero Merox Mr Khalid Buallay has been recognised and awarded with a token of appreciation from Deputy Chief Executive Refining and Marketing Mr Gordon Smith. In addition to good command over unit operations and troubleshooting, Mr Buallay is vigilant and always looking for abnormalities within and outside the units. During his relief hours, (normally control operators released for 1 hour during afternoon and Night shift for field rounds), he noticed three leaks and all of them potential to cause major safety hazard. The attractive point was that all of the leaks were in pipe trench and away from his designated area.

1. On September 12, 2011, Mr Buallay found and identified ¾” drain line nipple leak on Rich gas line at the North South pipe trench west of 4A CDU. Because of his thorough field checks and vigilant, he was able to spot the leak.

2. On October 4, 2011, Mr Buallay noticed a small flame on the Hydrogen from LSFO to Platformer at the North South pipe trench west of FCCU saltwater strainers. He immediately alerted the concerned and fire was extinguished. The line was wrongly stenciled as nitrogen.

3. On December 11, 2011, he noticed naphtha leak from Unifier feed line west of Platformer.

THE Energy Blitz 2012 Workshop held in Awali Club was attended by General Manager Marketing Mr Khalid Al Sabbagh, Bapco Energy Team, together with the energy champions and their respective area specialists and managers from Refining and Maintenance divisions. Several support groups from various departments provided their technical assistance and expertise. The energy champions took the center stage in brainstorming and mapping of energy ideas for a new energy blitz in 2012. This workshop was the first step in preparation for the re-launching of 100-day Energy Blitz. The first blitz held in December 2004 was considered a success when it surpassed the target savings of US$ 250,000 in 100 days. The Energy Champions vowed to face the challenge as the target energy saving bar has been raised by 10% to US$ 275,000. General Manager Refining Mr Ebrahim Talib, the sponsor of this initiative, expressed optimism for the positive outcome of the workshop during a phone-patch interview. He emphasised the importance of energy conservation not only for Bapco employees but to Bahrain as the nation. He encouraged everyone to get involved in saving energy, to fuel the next generations, and to keep a cleaner environment by lowering carbon emissions. Mr Al Sabbagh cited the khuff gas price of US$ 0.70 per

million BTU in 2002 will now be US$ 2.25 in 2012. The international price could go as high as US$ 8.00. He cited the achievement in 2005 of a reduction in seven units EII improvement from 2002 which was a major milestone as every unit EII reduction was equivalent to US$ 25,000 per month. As the fuel cost increases, the energy benefit becomes more attractive at US$ 50,000 to US$ 75,000 per unit EII. He cited that gas availability will be at its peak in the year 2025. The earlier the energy saving activity is commenced, the longer the years it will be extended for the next generations. Manager Power & Utilities Mr Khalid A. Latif, was very open in sharing the philosophy of operating the power plant more on reliability than energy efficiency. Power Plant being the heart of the refinery can not afford to shutdown because of its impact to the downstream units. He challenged the energy champions to think outside the box by operating the refinery efficiently without sacrificing reliability. Both OPD North and South Managers, Mr Hassan Bahram and Mr Hassan Al Noaimi, who have always been energy conservation advocates since the team was formed in 2002, and other managers offered full support of the event.

Ahmed Najaf of Energy Team and Jaber Bader of Maintenance co-facilitated the workshop. The group was able to map-out 73 energy ideas. Five energy team leaders have been assigned namely: (a) Furnace and Fired Heaters – Muneef Razaz of LSFO (b) Steam and Condensate System – Thabet Ahmed of Power & Utilities (c) Flare System and Oil Loss – Yousif Maidan (d) Miscellaneous energy items – Abdulla Ali Hassan and Mohammed Al Saffar from LSDP. The key drivers consist of ten OPD and Bapco energy team members and 39 energy champions from various disciplines along with the support from other departments namely: Central Reliability Engineering, Process Control and Instrumentation, Information Technology, Maintenance, Training and Development and Public Relations are essential to the Energy Blitz campaign. Energy Coordinator, Vicente Espina, the interim chairman of Bapco Energy Team closed the workshop with the positive thought that Energy Champions who completed the workshop are now ready to move to the next phase, which is developing the audit points for the 100-day Energy Blitz to be presented to Bapco Management by early January 2012. In line with the company vision, the 2012 Energy Blitz will strive for excellence in energy conservation.

• Saudi Aramco raised its January, 2012 crude OSPs to Asia for all grades by $1.60-1.95/Bbl over December, 2011 OSPs. The hikes were more than Asian refiners and traders expected, and who were especially surprised with the hike for the lighter grades, as naphtha cracks have been weak in Asia. The higher OSPs are likely to erode margins for Asian refiners. January, 2012 crude OSPs for supply to Asia are as follows:

• In its latest Short Term Energy Outlook, EIA reduced its forecast for global crude oil and fuel consumption for 2011 and 2012. EIA expects a global demand of 88.13 mn b/d in 2011 and 89.52 mn b/d in 2012. This compares with their last month projections of 88.23 mn b/d and 89.62 mn b/d for 2011 and 2012 respectively. EIA projects that non-OPEC supplies will grow by 0.4 mn b/d in 2011 and by about 1.2 mn b/d in 2012 and it expects that OPEC supply to remain largely unchanged in both years after having grown by 0.7 mn b/d in 2010. EIA mentioned that continuing tension in the Middle East and North Africa continues to exert upward pressure on oil prices. However, this pressure has been offset by the restoration of Libyan oil output, which has thus far exceeded our prior expectations. At the same time, downside demand risks persist, stemming from fears about weakening global economic growth and the contagion effects of the EU’s debt crisis.

• ADNOC has concluded negotiations with buyers for 2012 jet fuel term contracts at a premium of $2/Bbl to MOPAG. Traders were surprised at this high premium as the jet fuel market is still bearish at the moment. Europe’s debt crisis and slower air travel in winter has dampened the demand for jet fuel, effectively shutting any arbitrage opportunities to send the product over to Europe. ADNOC’s term premium is higher than earlier term values finalized by Bapco ($1.75/Bbl) and KPC ($1.70/Bbl).• KPC and Unipec announced last week the signing of a MOU for the supply of up to 300,000 b/d of crude oil to the end of 2021 for the $9.3bn plant; JV refinery/petrochemicals complex in China between KPC and Sinopec, Unipec’s parent company.• QP and Shell signed an agreement last week to jointly develop a $6.5bn petrochemical complex in Ras Laffan Industrial City (80% stake for QP and 20% for Shell). The agreement follows a joint feasibility study carried out by the

two parties. The scope under consideration includes a world scale steam cracker – with feedstock coming from natural gas projects currently operating in Qatar–in addition to a 1.5mn t/y monoethylene glycol plant, a 300,000 t/y linear alpha olefins plant and another olefin derivative unit. Products manufactured at the new facility will primarily be marketed into East Asian growth markets. The project is due to begin operation in 2017. • Renewables & Alternatives Energies:• While KSA is betting on solar as its prime renewable, it is now also pushing ahead with a major research and development effort on renewables and green technologies, including bio-fuels, Saudi Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced last week. • The new King-Abd Allah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) is spearheading the bio-fuels drive, focusing on the production of commercial quantities of reasonably priced bio-fuel from artificial farms of marine algae in the Red Sea.

QATAR International Petroleum Marketing Co, or Tasweeq, will stop term gasoil exports from 2012 as domestic demand is expected to increase, industry sources

based in the Middle East and Singapore said. Tasweeq exports about 30,000 to 60,000 tonnes of 0.2 percent sulphur gasoil every month through its monthly term contract and offers a similar volume in the spot market occasionally, traders said.

KUWAIT’S Oil Minister Mohammed Al Busairi has said the global oil market is balanced, suggesting the Gulf country will likely support maintaining the status quo at the upcoming OPEC meeting, the Associated Press has reported. OPEC’s last meeting in June ended in disarray after delegates failed to reach agreement on adjusting supply quotas. Mr Al Busairi said he hopes ministers this time will be able to “reach a consensus formula.”

SAUDI Aramco, China Petroleum & Chemical Corp (Sinopec) and CNOOC are

in talks to buy an up to 30% stake in North American oil and gas services firm Frac Tech International in a deal worth about $2.2bn, Reuters has reported, citing two sources with knowledge of the matter. Frac Tech is also in advanced talks with Saudi Aramco, Repsol-YPF SA and Sinopec to establish three separate fracking joint ventures in the Middle East, Argentina and China, the sources said.

OPEC’s 12 member-states produced 30.785 million barrels per day in November, the highest level in three years with Saudi Arabia pumping almost 10 million bpd, MEES has reported. Half of the monthly increase came from Saudi Arabia, which boosted its output from 9.5

million bpd in October to as high as 9.9 million bpd last month, the report said. The International Energy Agency estimated that actual OPEC production, excluding Iraq, stood at 27.32 million bpd in October, or 2.48 mbpd more than the group’s official target.

STUDIES done by the Stanford University of Medicine, California, show that TV viewing is directly linked with mindless eating. When children watch TV, they snack more often on junk food such as popcorn, chips, ice cream, fizzy drinks and biscuits – that are high in salt and calories and low in fibre. At the same time, it keeps children indoors and largely responsible for the lack of physical

activity. TV viewing could lead to obesity because children tend to eat more when glued to small screen. Studies done on women suggest that sedentary behaviour like television viewing significantly increases the risk of obesity and diabetes. It found that for every two hours spent watching TV, there is a 23 per cent increase in the risk of obesity and a 14 per cent increase in diabetes.

AWALI Running Club members have been running the streets of Awali for over 40 years and have been entering the Bahrain Relay Marathon for the past 30 years. The Bahrain Relay Marathon is organised by the Bahrain Round Table and raises money for local charities. The Bahrain Round Table is a group of individuals who organises the event voluntarily; this year they have raised in excess of BD15,000 which will be donated to worthy local charities throughout the year. The concept of the relay race is that an individual from each team runs 3km and then hands the team baton over to the next runner for 16 stages, giving 16x3km a total of 48km

covered. This year the race started at the Bahrain International Circuit and was then run up the Zallaq Highway, around the outside of Awali, out into the oil field and back down the Zallaq Highway and finishing at the BIC. With 136 teams on the start line and 16 stages to be run, the numbers of actual runners, supporters and marshals were in excess of 3,000 people and made for a fantastic day although a logistical nightmare for police trying to control the traffic as teams follow their runner in the early stages. This year the Awali Running Club team Captained by Tim Owen

(P.C&I) managed an awesome 15th place out of the 136 teams that started. Thanks to all the ARC runners for their efforts and our Chairman Dave McGlone (Bapco Upstream) for his encouragement to enter a team for another year and once again the ARC says, “Thank you Bapco for your continuous support in sponsoring the team entry and we look forward to your support in future years.” Should anyone be interested in joining the Awali Running Club, we run on a Sunday evening presently at 4pm, please contact Neil Gilbert on 177543380 or email [email protected] for more information.
