interviewed by: Hakeema Jaffar Khalil and Ahmed Al-Musaifer

Bapco is a world leader in occupational health and safety. The company has won many prestigious and important awards from several global organisations, which reflects the fruitful results of Bapco’s continuous efforts and improvement. Over the past 15 years, the company has been able to reduce accidents by more than 80% and was able to reach 16 million hours without a single lost time accidents, raising the safety awareness and culture to advanced levels, whether among workers of Bapco employees or the employees of contracting companies operating within the company. Our interviewee enjoys a distinguished presence and reputation at the level of the work environment and beyond. He is known for his closeness to everyone, his dedication and sincerity to his work.

Tell us about yourself?Ahmed Khalil Ebrahim from Nabih Saleh Island. I am 55 years old. I am married and have one boy, an Aviation graduate from Britain, and two daughters, who are studying in the University of London. I cherish my close relationship with my family, colleagues, and especially with my dear mother.I work in Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) as a Manager of Health, Safety and Environment Department.

What schools did you attend?Al Jazeera Primary Boys School was the only school in Nabih Saleh as the island was not connected with Manama and the only way to reach Nabih Saleh was by boats. The study was very difficult. We suffered to finish the primary stage as teachers would use boats to come from Sitra. Only two teachers were residents of Nabih Saleh. In the winter, the study would sometimes get interrupted because of the teachers’ inability to reach the island. When we finished primary stage, we had to use boats to reach our intermediate school. In winter, it was very difficult to use that tiring little boat. Usually we would reach school while our clothes were wet from the sea water. It was an achievement for any student to finish the intermediate school. I made it thanks to God Almighty. As for the secondary stage, the school year started with the opening of the Sitra Causeway, as the Ministry of Education provided us with a bus that would take us from and to Shaikh Abdul Aziz Secondary School in Adliya. This represented a completely different experience (from a simple boat into a bus).

Is there any difference between teaching in the past and now?For teachers, they were more serious and more committed to teaching. They were teachers and educators who would instruct on the right basis. Fathers in the past would allow them to instruct their sons if things weren’t going right. When did you join Bapco and how was your initial enrollment?I joined Bapco in 1980 as a trainer and studied outside Bahrain at the expense of Bapco until I completed the Masters degree in EHS from Aston University in Birmingham.

Tell us about your beginning at Bapco? What did you gain from this experience? At the beginning, I joined Bapco as a fire and safety trainer and inspector. The manager of the department was then the late Salman Sulais. We started different training periods including a number of courses in the fire, health and safety colleges in the UK. Then we reached different stages of training in the company in English Language, management, reporting, and other oil-related courses. The experience was great. During my training years, I gained a lot of skills, including the skill of dealing positively with people so that they would enjoy the health and safety profession in the company.

Where did you get the idea of joining Bapco and who helped you at the beginning? In the 1980s there were a lot of job opportunities. I had three lucrative job opportunities, as I was approached by Alba, Electricity and Bapco. At that time, I was advised, especially by my father, that the best place to get training opportunities was Bapco. My father insisted

on joining Bapco. From his point of view as worker in Bapco, he said to me that Bapco was a pioneering school. I followed his opinion that was supported by the late Mohammed Jassim Al-Jafairi from Refining Department, who explained to me that the best place for me to develop myself and acquire the best experience and skills and to reach a prestigious position in the future was Bapco.

Who are the people who have had an impact on your life from the professional side? Two people played a major role in my career: The late Salman Sulais, Manager of Fire Department then, and Hussain Tadayun, former General Manager of Refining Division, as he had a major impact on my professional life. In addition to Mr. Hassan Jaffar, who was the Manager of Refining Department for some time, and Gee Sung, an Indian national who was my superior in the beginning of my career. He was a sincere person. He gave me a lot of proper instructions that enhanced my capabilities as well as Mr. Charlie McNalis from England who supported me and developed my skills in English language, writing reports, inspection and acting during accidents until we get to the point where we are now.I do not forget my dear friend with whom I have spent many years of my life, Ahmed Al-Moalem. Although he was a firefighter and I was his superior, he was one of the people who influenced me very much. One of the people with whom I grew up in this company, is my colleague Ebrahim Mohammed. I have had a very good relationship with from the very beginning until now. He is a dear friend that I cherish his friendship and have huge respect and appreciation for him.

Who are the people who have had an impact on your life in general? The person who had influenced me the most and taught me to work diligently was the late hajji Khalil, my dear father. He worked very hard in two jobs for the comfort and happiness of his family. In the morning he worked as a gardener in the US embassy, while in the afternoon he worked in the fire department in Salman Port. He struggled so much for us that we feel we couldn’t pay him back for what he did for us as he died at a young age. I feel sorry that I could not do something in return for him.The other person who affected my life greatly is my mother, God bless her. She had a very big role in guiding and serving us day and night to guarantee our comfort. When I am late at work, she would wait for me at the door. My dear wife also has had a great role in my life. I traveled for long periods, while she took care of raising my eldest son Khalil alone.

A company like Bapco has to be full of unforgettable events and incidents. Can you recall any of the incidents that are printed in your memory?I have worked at Bapco for more than thirty years and I’ve come across a lot of incidents. Some of them are beautiful and some are sad. On May 10th, 1983, there was a fire in the company and as a result one person died. It was the first time for me to witness such event. The experience was very bad as the fire led to losing most of that unit, costing the company millions of dollars. We have experienced lots of difficult situation. It’s true that stories in the field of occupational health and safety are never ending. It is a good thing that we managed to create one of the highest health and safety environments in the world within Bapco. We have received several international awards and honors that many companies dream of. This is a conclusive proof that the company is serious about creating an environment that is tailored to the needs of its employees, so that we can raise health and safety to the highest standards. There are many positive and negative stories of course, but unfortunately people are naturally focused on bad experiences.

After 30 years in Bapco, what do you miss in Bapco? After more than thirty years ... I miss the simplicity of people. In the past we would have breakfast together and we were like brothers. We cared about each other. It was a family-like atmosphere. We enjoyed such beautiful times. We would go home satisfied and happy as good brothers and friends. This has changed a lot today. Perhaps the reason is people’s preoccupation with earning their own living. Perhaps high-tech devices and smart phones that are now the new concern of society

or employees’ activities outside the company with their families have something to do with this change. I think life used to be much more beautiful because of its simplicity. We lived as a big family, caring about each other, helping each other, having fun with each other. We would exert a great deal of effort, but wouldn’t feel tired because we worked based on the spirit of a single integrated team without paying attention to the names and titles, who is superior and who is subordinate or worker. This is the beautiful atmosphere that we miss nowadays.

What is the difference between safety in Bapco in the past comparing to the present? The work environment was not as safe as it is now. There was no real interest in safety as there is now. There were no place for the staff to have their breaks and eat lunch, we would sit anywhere and have lunch. Now we have provided employees with lunch rooms equipped with a variety of amenities. In addition to that, now they enjoy safety requirements, including clean and orderly clothing and best protective equipment conforming to the international standards in health and safety. These things were not taken into account significantly in the past.Safety now represents the most important specialties and priorities in any project or in any decision, law or training. In the past, there were no safety awareness and education courses. Today, there is a growing interest among all employees at all levels, even among corporate employees who have no previous interest in health and safety. Today, we treat the contractors’ worker the same way we treat the company’s employee in terms of health and safety, and we pay great attention to make sure the availability of safety equipment to suit their needs as per international standards on a daily basis. In the past, the situation was a bit difficult because there was not enough awareness and training in that field. There was not enough equipment and there were no places for the comfort and welfare of the employees. We are now giving the employee priority over anything else in the company, particularly in the field of health and safety.

What do you dream of doing in your work that has not yet been achieved? One of the things I have always dreamed of and believed in is for our employees to act outside the company the same way they do within the company in terms of safety behavior and precautions.Unfortunately, this is not the case so far. I find an employee inside the company committed to all health and safety standards, but outside the company he violates these standards, including the speedy driving, talking on the phone while driving, and not taking safety measures at home, etc.I hope that the employees’ behavior inside and outside the work environment become of the same level. One of the things I’ve always dreamed of is for the work environment to become completely accident-free. I want it to be zero-accident. Unfortunately, we still suffer from some minor injuries, some of which are of course serious injuries that cause problems for the employee or the company. My dream is for the refinery to be operated completely free from injuries.I hope for the environmental awareness to be taken seriously by employees the same way they deal with health and safety, whether outside or inside the company. Unfortunately, today there are too many environmental issues we suffer from inside and outside the company, such as the use of paper and plastic on a daily basis, that are i n c o m p a t i b l e with the re q u i re m e n t s of the environment.

Message from ITD Management Digital Transformation to Meet Bapco’s Vision

With the rapid growth of online and mobile communications and use of social media throughout the “customers journey,” customers increasingly want businesses to respond to them whenever, wherever and however they want to initiate contact. This rapidly changing environment is forcing ITD to evolve their customer experience management processes in general, IT infrastructure and Team Engagement capabilities specifically. Not only do ITD feel that they need to aggressively adopt new channels, they also recognise the need to adopt solutions that help them anticipate customer needs and situations, then respond as accurately and consistently as possible. In such an environment, more than new technology is required and ITD’s strategy is to ease this burden.Exceptional customer experience starts with knowing your customers and delivering a highly personalised experience with every interaction. By monitoring and understanding each user’s unique needs and preferences, we can dynamically manage their experience and bring the right resources to each interaction. As ITD is always looking for digital transformation to meet Bapco’s vision and objectives of innovation, we have successfully migrated the network infrastructure to Software Defined Networking (SDN) putting Bapco on the global map of technology by being the first Oil and Gas Company to adopt SDN in MENA, an award winning project of Network Innovation in Oil and Gas and Public Sector. This has made our infrastructure ready to support multiple critical applications such as IP Telephony where recently we have added more resiliency and redundancy for our existing PABX to ensure business continuity

without any disruption to this critical service; and to allow users to benefit from team engagement applications such as Video Conferencing, video point to point through BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) on their mobile phones, tablets, PCs and even on their deskphone. ITD opened a business led project “Visual MESA” Energy Real Time Optimization (ERTO) Model under the direction of our DCE Mr. Ebrahim Talib, GM Refining Mr. Hafedh Al Qassab, Manager P&U Mr. Abdul Qader Jaffer and Manager IT Mr. Daij Khalifa on May, 2016.Visual MESA (ERTO) Model, developed by EBS-Soteica, was handed over to Bapco last April 2017 after an extensive review with the VMESA-Bapco Project Team. ITD being the model administrator ensured that all the software requirements for the smooth execution of the model under Software Maintenance Services (SMS) have been covered in the agreement signed with EBS.Visual MESA ERTO is a real-time considers plant control strategies and system reaction to changes in the utilities. ERTO gives operators actionable advice on how best to operate complex,

interactive utility systems to minimise utility cost. The anticipated improvement in Energy Intensity Index (EII) performance is about 2 units or energy savings of up to $2 MM per year. VMESA ERTO Model has undergone several reviews and fine tunings to keep it well representing current Refinery Utilities System. Optimization suggestions generated by the model have been discussed with the concerned parties for operational viability and easiness of their implementations. There have been “temporary constraints” from the area owners that Visual MESA Team need to reassess. A work flow proposal has been brought to the respective Area Managers for their acceptance to ensure the recommended “Optimization Suggestions” are implemented in a timely fashion. There were trial runs conducted by area owners to test the workability of the recommendations. Heater specialist was also consulted on the perceived negative impact to the operations. The acceptance of ERTO model custodian (P&U) from

the Refining Division on the soundness of the model prompted ITD to declare the model “Live” and accessible to all on the 31st May 2017.DCE, Ebrahim Talib’s e-response, “Well done for your great effort, it is greatly appreciated. The challenge is to start its optimum utilization and spreading awareness”, was very encouraging. It intensified the team to ensure sustainability of the model. Further, the positive outlook on the subscription of EBS Sustainability Performance Program (SPP) will lead Bapco on having EBS “evergreen” assistance through regular review and reporting of ERTO model “health” in reaping up the potential benefits from the system.ITD as a focal point, who serves as an interface between EBS and Bapco’s end users (Bapco P&U Model Owner) aims for a smooth and organised business deal under the ITD security standard.

Bapco E-Forms, introduced in 2015, revolutionized the way people work and do their day-to-day activities by enabling automated electronic forms and workflow based actions.Bapco E-Forms continues its excellence in delivering business transformation solutions. Year to date the Bapco E-Forms platform has saved the company 2.4 million hours of potential business process delays with 23,010 E-Forms submitted in 18 workflow implementations. Below are some details of the most successful workflows:

Bapco E-Forms’ success comes not only in potential delays saved. The larger portion of success comes from un-measurable values such as:• Tracking: All E-Forms can be tracked, and all E-Forms have a definitive route of approvals. This has been demonstrated as extremely valuable especially in cases

where the original (paper-based) business process had a non-definitive route of approvals.• Smart routing: All approvals are automatically routed to the acting supervisor or manager, for both new AND pending E-Forms.• Integrity: Business processes have become streamlined and automatically validated because all E-Forms are powered by the Bapco Workflow engine.

The Bapco E-Forms team originally consisted of 3 members and has now grown to 6 members. We’re continuously developing new Bapco E-Forms and workflows on a daily basis to improve Bapco’s business processes. If you are interested in implementing Bapco E-Forms to help your department, then please contact IT Service Desk on 5911, or raise a new E-Service request online in the ITD Portal under the category “Software à Bapco Portal”.

• There were 9 road traffic accidents during May 2017, 4 involving Bapco and 5 contractor drivers. In addition, there were 21 road safety violations mainly relating to failures to observe “No Entry Signs” and minor accidents. Everyone need to continue with the efforts through defensive driving training and awareness to reduce these types of violations. The 5 Healthiest Summer FruitsNot all fruits are created equal. Harvest and enjoy these five flavorful nutritional powerhouses during the long hot days of summer! With summer in full swing, more people are looking for ways to tame the heat. Instead of making a beeline for the ice cream parlor or guzzling sugary iced lattes, why not feast on Mother Nature’s gift of refreshing summer fruit? Do so and you’ll reap the benefits of their health-hiking, physique-chiseling powers. Tart Cherries

While you can find dried tart cherries and tart cherry juice year-round, be especially sure to grab them when they’re available fresh during their fleeting summer season. Tart cherries are rich in antioxidants that have been shown to help improve recovery from training by limiting training-induced inflammation and muscular damage. What’s more, tart cherries contain melatonin, a compound that can improve sleep quality—an important benefit considering that a good night’s rest is essential for optimal recovery from hard training.

NectarinesWhile peaches may make the pie, sun-kissed nectarines are also a worthy addition to your summer menu. The easiest way to identify the difference between these two stone fruits is the absence of fuzz on the nectarine. Their yellow-tinged flesh is a good source of vitamin C, which can have an impact on fat oxidation during exercise, making it a potential ally in the battle of the bulge.

CantaloupeConsisting of about 90 percent water, this ultrare freshing fruit is filled to its dimpled skin with liquid to help keep you hydrated when temps begin to soar. Cantaloupe’s impressive nutritional resume includes plenty of vitamin C and beta-carotene. In the body, beta-carotene can be converted to vitamin A, which helps regulate the growth of new skin cells to assure you’re flaunting the best beach body possible. On its own, beta-carotene may have a protective effect against certain forms of cancer and cardiovascular disease. As a bonus, cantaloupe supplies healthy amounts of core-carving fiber.

WatermelonIt is made up of more than 90 percent water. Proper hydration is important to keep your joints well-lubricated and your metabolism humming along. Watermelon is so much more than H2O. A recent study discovered that the amino acid L-citrulline, which is abundant in watermelon, can dampen muscle soreness in athletes. The fewer muscle injuries you experience, the quicker you’ll be able to once again show some feats of strength in the gym. This picnic fave is also loaded with lycopene, an antioxidant compound that gives watermelon its signature blush and may help improve blood pressure numbers. It may also work to reduce sun damage your skin.

BlueberriesThey might be blue, but when it comes to nutrition, there’s nothing sad about these health bombs. For a mere 84 calories per cup, blueberries deliver 4 grams of belly-flattening fiber and a huge payload of anthocyanin antioxidants, chemicals responsible for the deep purple hue of the fruit. Blueberries may help reduce muscle-cell damage brought about by oxidative stress. A separate animal study reported that an antioxidant in blueberries called pterostilbene may help your six-pack pursuit by limiting fat storage and increasing fat burning.

When you are exercising or playing in the summer heat there are some things you need to watch out for to avoid serious physical consequences. First let’s simplify the factors that affect heat stress on your body during exercise: Air Temperature; Humidity; Wind Velocity; Thermal Radiation. You must look at all four of the above factors to determine your level of risk for complications from heat. For example:Exercising on a sunny day with no wind creates more stress on your body than a cloudy day with a 15mph wind.Humidity has much greater risk level than another day at the same air temperature with less humidity. Humidity impairs your body’s ability to sweat and cool itself.Watch out for high temperatures with high humidity, if you add a sunny day to that combination and no wind you are really looking for trouble.Problems caused by exertion in the heat:Heat Cramps – Heat cramps are muscle spasms. These cramps result from dehydration and mineral losses during heavy sweating.Heat Exhaustion – Your muscles during exercise are in competition with your skin for your limited blood supply. Heat exhaustion occurs when blood volume decreases due to fluid

loss and when blood volume is diverted to your muscles so that they can continue to function which does not allow for your cardio vascular system to distribute an adequate supply of blood to the skin for cooling. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting, cold and clammy skin, hot and dry skin, rapid pulse.Request Data Response Data Heat Stroke – Heat stroke is a total collapse of the body’s ability to dissipate heat, and can be life threatening. Symptoms include rapid pulse, confusion, hot and dry skin, and unconsciousness. Your best course of action is to cool the person as rapidly as possible. Place in a bath of cold water and contact medical personnel.

Japan to raise crude storage capacity for Saudi Aramco in Okinawa

Japan said last Friday that it was preparing to raise the crude oil storage capacity that it lends for free to Saudi Aramco by 30% from this summer. Dr. Syed Raza, Consultant Cardiologist & Physician at Awali Hospital was recently invited as a speaker in one of the international conferences held in Barcelona, Spain from 21st to 23rd May 2017. He spoke on Syncope (fainting related to cardiac causes). Dr. Raza shared the platform with other speakers from USA, Canada, UK and Argentina along with others. “Dizziness, vertigo and syncope (fainting) are common symptoms that patients seek medical attention”, said Dr. Raza. “It accounts for at least 5 percent cause for hospital visits and 2 percent cause for all hospital admissions. One has 40 percent chance of fainting at least once in his or her life time. They also incur a significant stress on healthcare manpower, spending and budget”, he added. While most of the above presentations are not of serious nature

and do not lead to any major harm, some of the causes that are particularly related to heart can be potentially serious and even fatal. If a cardiac cause is suspected, it warrants a thorough investigation”, he further said. “Unfortunately, proportions of patients are either misdiagnosed or are never diagnosed at all. Patients may be referred or transferred from one specialty to another while they undergo a battery of investigations some of which may even be unnecessary and costly but without reaching any conclusion. This can be a major cause for distress for patients and relatives”, he continued. “Much of the diagnosis, however, lies in the history from the patient or from an eye witness if it is fainting attack. So a detailed history of the account is vital”, Dr. Raza concluded.
