General description of the course:

This course is an introduction to the study of philosophical ethics, understood as both a subject for

theoretical reflection and a practical guide for how to live. We will explore the views of the West’s

greatest ethical thinkers, both past and present, and we will use narratives from literature and film to

illuminate the ethical issues they raise.

Course objectives:

Students will appreciate the importance of theoretical ethical reflection in the effective

resolution of practical ethical problems.

Students will acquire the tools needed to locate and articulate the important points of

disagreement between people on opposing sides of controversial issues.

Students will cultivate the skill of critically evaluating ethical views and arguments.

Students will learn how to construct philosophically sound ethical arguments of their own.

Students will improve their ability to engage in respectful discussion of divisive moral issues

Students will gain new insights into ethical problems arising in their daily lives.

3. Nonconsequentialist (Deontological) Theories of Morality

4. Virtue Ethics

7. Justice: Reward and Punishment

8. The Taking of Human Life

9. Allowing Someone to Die, Mercy Death, and Mercy Killing

10. Abortion

11. Environmental Ethics

Final exam date:

There is no final exam. You will write an essay in lieu of exam.
