Holy Weekat HomeTuesday, April 25:30 - 7:30 pm, Serra CenterFor families with children in Spark! Grades 1 - 5.Siblings are welcome; the workshop is geared to elementary age children and their families.

Go through the 7 stations where children (with parent assistance) will make a craft representing each day of Holy Week. Follow along, and honor Jesus’ last week on earth. Third Sunday of Lent Page 7

Being In the Tribe Isn’t Enough. God Says We Must Bear Fruit!

Dear Friends,

Today’s scripture readings (Exodus 3:181, 13;15; 1 Corinthians 10:16, 1012; Luke 13:19 and Psalm 103: 12, 34, 67, 8,11) are full of messages from God to his people. Moses’ message to the Israelites is one of deliverance from slavery in Egypt.

Paul’s message to the Corinthians, and Jesus’ to his disciples is one of repentance and accountability. “Whoever thinks he isstanding secure should take care not to fall.” Paul looks back at the followers of Moses who were struck down in the desertbecause God was not pleased with “most of them.”

Jesus cautions his disciples not to think that victims of tragedies (Galileans whose blood Pilate mixed with their sacrifices andeighteen people killed by a falling tower in Siloam) are somehow guiltier than everybody else: “By no means! But if you donot repent, you will all perish as they did.” Jesus continues by telling of a gardener who pleads with an orchard owner to sparea nonproducing fig tree: “Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bearfruit in the future. If not, you can cut it down.”

Who is the orchard owner? Who is the gardener? Could both be Jesus? One the King of the universe who comes to judge theliving and the dead and the other the loving, patient, pleading Savior and advocate, who sends the Spirit to make us fruitful?

Inevitably, we will fail. Repeatedly. But Psalm 103 reassures us: The Lord is kind and merciful. He pardons all our iniquities, heals all our ills, redeems our life from destruction, and crowns us with kindness and compassion. I read this crowning withkindness and compassion two ways: 1. The Lord’s kindness and compassion to us, redeeming us from destruction and 2. TheSpirit working within us to make us ever more kind and more compassionate.

The scriptures are clear. It isn’t enough just to be members of the tribe, or of the “club.” We are accountable to God for beingfruitful where we are planted. Here are two ways you could be fruitful.

Men for the Choir: We are looking for basses and baritones to join our wonderful choir. Right now we’ve got about 20sopranos and 20 altos, 12 tenors and only about 7 basses / baritones. We’d love to double that! Here are the requirements tosing in the choir:

• Pleasant voice (doesn’t have to be fantastic) that can match pitch and carry a tune• Good attitude, willingness to be of service• Availability to be present for at least 80% of all rehearsals / services• A good ear – the ability to sing back a passage that you hear. Music reading is not required, but it is certainly welcome. • Experience singing in a choir (or playing an instrument in band) is also a plus, but not required.• Interested? Contact [email protected] for a quick, private, “vocal checkup” or call 805.482.6417 ext. 327

Audio/Visual Ministry: This is a fairly new ministry at Padre Serra, but one that will inevitably grow and deepen. At themoment we are looking for people to help “mix” sound at mass and at some Serra Center events, but this will likely expand to other responsibilities sooner rather than later. If you’re interested, please contact Bill Giles [email protected] who is coordinating this exciting ministry.Training will be provided.

Siempre Adelante,

Dominic MacAllerWorship Minister

Lent's Connection to Baptism The liturgical season we now call Lent began in the early centuriesof the Church as the period when the Elect (those chosen to beinitiated at the Easter Vigil) completed their preparation for thesacraments. In more recent times all of us fast, pray and performworks of mercy along with the Elect in anticipation of the great feastof Easter when they will be baptized, confirmed and receiveEucharist for the first time and we will renew our own baptismalpromises. This year Padre Serra Parish has five Elect. Their picturesare displayed near the baptism pool. Please pray for them as theyapproach the waters of baptism.
