QLA’s Dissolution Baskets have been designed and fabricated to the highest standards – often exceeding those specifi ed by other manufacturers.

In addition to meeting the specifi cation in the USP, the baskets have been designed to meet the dimensional specifi cations of each individual original equipment manufacturer. This means that different dimension baskets are manufactured for different dissolution baths ensuring a seamless transition between QLA and the OEM.

Every QLA basket is manufactured using a sintered mesh. Sintering is a strengthening process that compresses and heats the mesh under high pressures and temperatures. This results in welded joints at all the wire overlaps and adds considerable strength and longevity to the basket. Baskets that are not sintered rely on the initial weaving tension of the cloth for structural strength

and this diminishes during normal use and handling. Weakened baskets will lose their shape and will often fail to comply with the

specifi cations of the USP. Baskets are available in the standard mesh sizes of 10, 20 and 40, with other mesh sizes and PTFE coating available as a custom order.

All QLA baskets are serialised with laser engraving to ensure that the same basket can be put back in the same position to ensure enhanced reproducibility. A Certifi cate of Compliance

is supplied with each basket.

Baskets are available for: VanKel, Distek, Hanson, Erweka, PharmaTest, Sotax and Caleva. Standard baskets available from stock, custom baskets can be supplied in 1 – 2 weeks.

QLA are pleased to introduce a revolutionary new type of sample cannula for dissolution testing – the Hi-Cap High Capacity Sampling Cannula. This new cannula offers the user increased capacity combined with ease of use, and can be used in all brands of dissolution bath.

The new sampling cannula offers the following benefits:

Increased capacity – The surface area of the filter is more than seven times that of the smaller filter disk that is traditionally used in these probes.

Easy to use – The filter can easily be removed by hand without any tools. This saves time and reduces frustration.

Filter and cap locked in place – The design uses a simple twist lock to ensure the cap remains in place. This is important to ensure the cannula does not come apart during backwashing.

Minimal turbulence – The thin low volume cannula can remain in the vessel during the dissolution test without affecting the dissolution result. This removes the need for an automated probe.

Sampling consistency – the Hi-Cap cannula sits in the vessel cover and samples from the same position every time. Different length cannula are available for 500, 900 and 1000ml tests.

Multi-purpose filters – The filters used in the Hi-Cap cannula are identical in size to those used with Vankel cannula. Therefore you can use the same filters for different dissolution baths.

Variety of sizes – Filters are available in 10, 35, 45 and 70µm. Filters are available in packs of 100 or cases of 1000.

Inert construction – All parts are made from non leaching Stainless steel and Kynar (flouropolymer) with a silicone rubber o-ring.

The recently introduced Moulded PTFE Paddle from QLA offers a new standard in accuracy and reproducibility for dissolution paddles and compliments the extensive range of dissolution accessories available from LabHut.com.

The paddle (Patent Pending) features a fl uoropolymer blade and single-piece stem moulded over an electropolished, 316 stainless steel shaft.

The innovative design features no paddle-to-shaft joint. This joint which is commonplace in conventional PTFE and Stainless Steel paddle designs can cause a potential cross contamination problem, as well as an additional corrosion path. Wobble is also considerably reduced in the new PTFE paddle due to it being a single piece cast.

The PTFE Dissolution Paddles are available for most brands of dissolution bath and in different lengths.

USP 724 Apparatus 5Transdermal Patch Retainer (Hanson Style)


The Transdermal Patch Retainer is a simple economic device which is used with any standard Dissolution Test station. The patch dosage form is placed against a glass disc (delivery side up) and retained with the 17 mesh PTFE screen. Four PTFE clips/feet retain the assembly and position the assembly in a standard one litre dissolution vessel.

APPFIVE-HR Transdermal Patch Retainer

The USP Monograph for Felodipine Extended-Release Tablets specifies the use of a quadrangular stationary basket. The QLA Stationary Basket fully complies with the USP Monograph and provides the highest quality Stationary Basket available. Dissolution vessel covers for positioning the Basket at the specified position are available for most Dissolution Instruments.

The QLA Felodipine basket is made from precision welded stainless steel mesh. The basket is firmly fixed to the shaft and will not come off or bend. In addition the flap inside the basket is fabricated such that it will not fall off or be lost during use.

The Stationary Basket method also offers a potential solution to problems associated with floating, sticking and swelling dosage forms.

While the use of sinkers may solve similar problems, their final position in the dissolution vessel may vary, thus contributing to variations in test results.

Suitability for these applications must be verified.

When the density of the dosage form is less than the density of the dissolution media, fl oating may occur. USP 711 states: “A small, loose piece of non-reactive material such as not more than a few turns of wire helix may be attached to dosage units that would otherwise fl oat. Other validated sinker devices may be used.”

The choice of sinker or capsule weight depends on the type and size of the dosage form. The sinker should not occlude the surface of the dosage form more than necessary because of the risk of affecting the dissolution rate.

Sinkers are available coated or uncoated. PTFE coated sinkers work well with magnetic retrievers whilst uncoated type 316 stainless steel sinkers are more durable. Care should be taken to ensure that direct contact of stainless steel with the dosage form does not cause interference with the active ingredient.
