FEED QUALITY CONFERENCE

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

Integrating gilt and sow nutrition “The aim of this presentation is to integrate the knowledge we have on gilt and sow nutrition into one definitive programme. One of the problems at the present time is that there is a huge diversity in recommendations around the world because each research group focussed on a different specific area and forgot the big picture. My 20 point plan therefore aims to integrate all of our knowledge from the very early pre pubertal phase through to culling at parity 6. The plan covers basic guidelines for management and feeding recommendations and aims to maximise the lifetime performance of the sow and not just for one but up to parity 6 when culling takes place. The plan is based on all available academic research work but also on years of experience in commercial nutrition and consultancy” – Prof Mike Varley, Honorary Professor, University of Nottingham and Director, The Pig Technology Company, United Kingdom

Nutrition of the sow: feeding her, feeding them“The two sides of the same coin that nutritionists need to integrate are the nutrition of the sow and the nutrition of the developing piglets. One of the critical steps relates to the manipulation of “in utero” nutrition. While dietary energy in gestating sows does not seem to influence the variation in birthweight, the supplementation with some dietary amino acids seems to have an impact on piglet development and born alive. However, amino acid requirements may differ relative to the physiological function targeted such as the immune development. In addition, other nutritional

supplements in sows have generated significant interest such as plant extracts, flavours and enzymes, which will be discussed” – Prof Eugeni Roura, Associate Professor, University of Queensland, Australia

Feeding and nutrition for better pig performance in hot climates“Practically, the dietary micro-nutrients managements in feed or supplementing micronutrients such as vitamins and organic acids, in feed or via the drinking water can be an effective alternative to provide the pigs extra nutrients to maintain good performance especially during unusual conditions. This presentation will be conducted with the main objective of evaluating the effects of dietary manipulations in order to alleviate the impact of high environmental temperature on the performance, carcass yield and meat quality of pigs raised under tropical conditions” – Dr Theerawit Poeikhampha, Lecturer, Department of Animal Science, Kasetsart University, Thailand

Using alternative raw materials“There are important limiting factors in the use of alternatives. These include knowledge of and variability in nutritional value (alternative ingredients are often products of another primary process and subject to various procedures). Then there is the problem of availability (is there seasonality in supply?). There are major problems relating to the high fibre content of many alternative raw materials including reduced digestibility and higher gut fill leading to a possible reduced dressing %. This presentation will review these problems but also provide nutritional information on

some alternative feed ingredients: palm kernel meal, copra meal and canola meal” – Prof Julian Wiseman, University of Nottingham, UK
