They say April showers bring May Flowersand so does Spring and birds on the wing startto sing again…all old clichés, but behind themis the beautiful theme of renewal and hope fora fresh approach to life.

One new way is to create and enjoy moresmiles and laughter in your life. In fact a recent

article by Barbara Mafcia reports a science behind laughter. She notes ,“Very simply put—when you have a thoughtcoupled with an emotion or feeling, your body automaticallyproduces chemicals and hormones.” The negative onesproduce stress, that is anger, fear, hostility, etc. The positiveones provide a safety valve that shuts off the flow of stresshormones and other compounds that cause this anger andhostility. Suffice it to say the old expression rings true,“Laughter is the best medicine.” Note this: Researches estimate that laughing a hundredtimes is equal to 10 minutes on a rowing machine or 15minutes on an exercise bike. Can you believe it? Laughingcan be a total body work out! And now it’s time to enjoy another pithy selection fromthe bard of Forest Trace.

WHO AM I? Have you ever wondered How it would be If you were he or she, Those other people you see? The question I ponder might I beRed hair or blonde, green eyes, or brown, taller or round?I might have been an athletic wizOr a giant in the computer biz.But that’s not how it really is.No need to consider being another,I am who I am and I thank my motherI am who I am ‘cause God has a planEveryone’s different, each woman each man.I’m happy with me, hope you’re happy with you.Cause if you are not, there’s naught we can do. In other words, the words of Popeye the sailor man, “Iam who I am! And that’s who I am.” I am your Dear Suzy!See you next month! —Love, Suzy

Support Our Stars of the FutureSunday, May 7th • Departs 1:00 p.m.

The South Plantation High School (SPHS) Drama program is adiverse program that strives for professional theatre in a high school setting.SPHS is recognized as the only cluster school in the Broward School Districtfor the deaf and hard of hearing. Because of this unique status, the theatreprogram director, Jason Zembuch, chooses to direct all productions in a styleknown as “Theatre for the Deaf ” with all mainstage productions beingperformed in both voice and American Sign Language. Under the direction of Mr. Zembuch, the students take part in whatthey call “builds.” This is where the students build the sets, design and createthe costumes and props, design hair, make-up, lights and sound for each oftheir shows. Actors and crew members will stay until ten at night rehearsingand working on the technical aspects. They will even come in on weekends. The SPHS drama program gets no funding from the school. In betweenrehearsals and builds, they work hard to fundraise all the money they needto put on a production by selling ad spaces in their playbill, doing car washesand garage sales, setting up fundraisers with restaurants and selling tickets. This month they will be presenting the popular musical Little Shop ofHorrors. Ticket prices are usually $15 at the door but they have graciouslygiven us a special discount. If you’d like to support this wonderful theatregroup, join us on Sunday, May 7th, and for just $5 enjoy a very entertainingshow starring some very talented high schoolers. who hope to become ourstars of the future.

Older Americans MonthFriday, May 12th • Noon

Each May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation’scelebration of Older Americans Month. The group designed the 2017 OAMtheme, Age Out Loud, to give aging a new voice—one that reflects whattoday’s older adults have to say. This theme shines a light on many importanttrends. More than ever before, older Americans are working longer, tryingnew things, and engaging in their communities. They’re taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence and advocating for themselvesand others. Older Americans Month is a perfect opportunity to recognizeand celebrate what getting older looks like today. Throughout the monthyou’ll be seeing us going around with a sign that we will ask you to bephotographed with to put on our Facebook page to show the world that ageis only a number and we still have many vital, intelligent seniors who areproud to be the age they are! On Friday, May 12th, we will hold acomplimentary hot dog lunch to celebrate. What could be more Americanthan hot dogs, and we are NEVER too old to enjoy them!

THERE’S LOTS TO DO, INTERESTING PROGRAMS & MORE!

Cinco de MayoFriday, May 5thThe 5th of May is not

Mexican Independence Day,but perhaps it should be! And Cinco

de Mayo is not an American holiday, butit should be. Cinco de Mayo, commemoratesthe triumph of a small Mexican army overFrench forces in the 1862 battle, “Batallade Puebla.” The Mexicans had won a great victorythat kept Napoleon III from supplying theConfederate rebels for another year, allowingthe United States to build the greatest armythe world had ever seen. This grand armysmashed the Confederates at Gettysburgjust 14 months after the battle of Puebla, essentially ending the Civil War. It might be a historical stretch to creditthe survival of the United States to thosebrave 4,000 Mexicans who faced an armytwice as large in 1862, but who knows? This year we celebrate in the traditionalstyle by having a Mariachi Band entertainyou. On Friday, May 5th, at Happy Hourbetween 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., the CardRoom will be filled with the exciting soundsof Mariachis. Enjoy the traditional drinkof Mexico, the Margarita, along with salsaand tortilla chips. At dinner sample a littleMexican fare. Viva el Cinco de Mayo!

As the world watches, the hermit kingdomis building an increasingly sophisticated nuclearprogram, as it already possesses the world’s fourthlargest standing army.
