Canteen News for Term 2 Below are some expectations to help ensure that our students are showing CARE in the canteen.

Children are to please write their lunch orders on a bag at home and drop the order off in the box on the canteen door (orders close at 9.00 am). We are hoping to have online ordering available soon. Please do not phone or text Lexi your order as you can appreciate the mornings are a very busy time for her. Don’t forget to say “Please” and “Thank You”. Familiarise yourself with the menu to ensure special items are available on the day of your order.

OUR STUDENTS EXCEL School Champion – Teila Bulmer Our 2016 School Champion – Teila Bulmer ‐ attended our recent assembly to speak to our students about her swimming success at the recent Special Olympic World Summer Games. Teila claimed four medals from four events at the games in Abu Dhabi, including a silver in the 100m backstroke, a bronze in the 200m freestyle, a silver in the 4 x 100m freestyle, and most impressive of all, a gold in the 100m freestyle. Teila also smashed a number of personal best times on her way to the podium. Congratulations Teila we are so proud of your achievements.

The Special Olympics World Summer Games was held in Abu Dhabi, from 8‐21 March 2019, with 7,000 athletes with an intellectual disability from 170 nations competing across 24 sports in front of half a million spectators. Australia was represented by 105 athletes who competed across 11 sports.

OUR STUDENTS EXCEL PSSA Hunter Girls Football (Soccer) Congratulations to Marissa and Aaris who were both selected for the PSSA Hunter Girls Football (Soccer) team at the recent trials. Marissa and Aaris will compete in the primary girls Hunter soccer team at the 3 day NSWPSSA Primary Football (Soccer) Girls Championship which will be held from 21 May to 23 May 2019 in East Lismore. We look forward to hearing all about the championship results and wish Marissa and Aaris and their Hunter team good luck.

Assembly Award Winners Congratulations to our award recipients who were presented with their awards at our recent Assembly last Thursday. A special mention to Jefferson and Lindsay Nercession who were presented with the Super Awesome Awards from Mrs Merchant. What an amazing achievement.

OUR STUDENTS EXCEL School Cross Country Our annual Cross Country was held on Wednesday, 3 April. Congratulations to all of our students who ran the course and finished – what an achievement! Thank you also to all our parents, grandparents and visitors who came along to cheer the children on as they completed the course. Congratulations to the top four place getters from each age group who will now represent our school at the Manning Zone Cross Country at Wingham on Friday, 3 May 2019.

OUR STUDENTS EXCEL PSSA Manning Zone Touch Trials On Tuesday our boys and girls touch football teams travelled to Taree to trial for the PSSA Manning Zone Touch Football teams. Our boys and girls touch teams played numerous games against many different schools during the day. After the round of games were completed, selectors choose players from all the schools present for the final “possible & probable” games. Congratulations to Evie and Emma who were selected into the Manning Zone Touch Football team and will now attend the Hunter Trial next term.

SCHOOL HAPPENINGS Great Lakes College ANZAC Day Assembly Yesterday Mrs Merchant and our School Captains, Nate and Aaris, attended the Great Lakes College ANZAC Day assembly. Thank you to Great Lakes College for including our school in your ANZAC Day assembly. It was a wonderful opportunity for our school learning community to share this important occasion with other students from different schools.

REMINDER: Our local ANZAC Day Dawn Service will be held at Pacific Palms Community Centre on Thursday, 25 April 2019 commencing at 6.00 am sharp. Our Leadership Team will lay a wreath. Aaris will read the poem, Flanders Field.

SCHOOL HAPPENINGS Pacific Palms Surf Life Saving Club – Helping Our Garden Grow We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Pacific Palms Surf Life Saving Club who donated funds from the Return and Earn Program this term. PPSLSC members gave their time to collect, sort and return eligible drink containers from various events (like Battle of the Boats and Branch

Carnivals) held at the club. This wonderful support has allowed the Green Team to purchase seedlings, gardening equipment and a new worm farm. And it has also saved 1000s of drink containers ending up in landfill. The seedlings were planted in the canteen garden and yielded a bumper crop of lettuces, cucumbers, parsley and tomatoes. This produce has been used in the canteen to help make our yummy salads and wraps. Our carefully cared for worms have been working hard recycling the food scraps and providing us with castings and worm wee to help our garden grow. Worms really are the best recyclers in the world! The members of the Green Team have shown great commitment in their roles and responsibilities for Term 1. They are looking forward to their new roles and planting the Autumn garden beds when we return to school next term.

A Special Visitor for Kindergarten As part of our literacy unit on the book “Dear Zoo” the Kindergarten children sent a letter to the Zoo to ask for a pet. Yesterday a special parcel arrived “Express Post” and we have enjoyed meeting Daisy the rabbit. Daisy will be

leaving school today as she has a very important job next week.

SCHOOL HAPPENINGS Easter Hat Parade This afternoon children from Kindergarten to Year 2 participated in our Egg‐cellent Easter Hat Parade wearing beautifully decorated Easter hats. The children were very excited when a surprise special guest arrived to lead the parade. Our special guest led our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students around the COLA so they could parade around in their fabulous Easter hats. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and visitors who came to watch the parade. It was a lot of fun and thank you for the fabulous support we had for our P&C Easter raffle.

INFORMATION FOR OUR PARENTS Voluntary Contribution Fee and Resource Levy After consultation with the P & C, the following fees have been set for 2019. The school Voluntary Contribution Fee for 2019 has been set at $35 per child, capped at $70 per family. The Resource Levy has been set at $50 per student. Statements to families were sent home recently. Payment can be made at the front office by cash or EFTPOS. Online POP payments can be made on the school website www.pacificpal‐p.schools.nsw.edu.au click on the tab.

Anzac Day Our school Anzac Day assembly will be held on Wednesday, 1 May at 9.15 am in the school hall. All parents, carers, grandparents and friends are invited to attend this special assembly.

Adventureland Excursion – Year 3 and Year 4 Thank you to the parents who have paid their child’s deposit for our exciting Stage 2 excursion to Adventureland. Parents can continue to make regular payments at any time. Students are getting very excited and are looking forward to our Adventureland excursion in Term 4 from Wednesday 30 October to Friday 1 November 2019. The camp aims to provide our students with an opportunity to interact with their friends outside of school, participate in team building activities, challenge themselves, develop self‐confidence and have some fun! Some of the camp activities include sailing, rock climbing, waterslides as well as a multitude of high ropes, tree top courses, giant swings and flying foxes and so much more. More information will be given out to students as the camp gets closer.

Individually printed school photo envelopes will be handed out to students next term. Please return the envelopes to school prior to photo day. Photo envelopes not returned to the office should be given to the photographer directly on photo day. (Envelopes will

not be received at the office on photo day.) IMPORTANT – please ensure all students are dressed in full school uniform on photo day.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It’s hard to believe that we have come to the end of an extremely busy first term. We have participated in some exciting experiences including welcoming new Kindergarten students, beach clean‐up, ANZAC assembly, touch football, Harmony Day, musical tryouts, Easter hat parade, cross country and swimming carnivals. Students have also been busy in the classrooms learning new skills and completing stimulating units of work.

Excellent results The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has identified Pacific Palms Public School, one of 60 NSW schools, as having demonstrated substantially above average gain in reading and/or numeracy achievement, as measured by NAPLAN. I would like to extend my congratulations to our staff, students and school community on this achievement. Improvement in student literacy and/or numeracy of this magnitude, as measured by NAPLAN, is significant and worthy of highlighting and acknowledging. I am incredibly proud of the innovative teaching and learning that occurs in our school to ensure that every student can perform to their full potential. We want every child in our schools to be known, valued and cared for. Site Maintenance We will have quite a few maintenance projects being completed around the school during the school holidays. This includes the replacement and painting of some doors, repair of stairs and repair and restoration of the hall COLA frame. There will be workers on site throughout the holidays. A reminder that school grounds are out of bounds during the holiday period. If you see anything unsafe or suspicious, please call the School Safety and Security 24 hour hotline 1300 88 00 21. Permanent Staff update After a highly competitive and comprehensive process, we are thrilled to announce AMY DORFLING as the successful applicant for the permanent Classroom Teacher position. Mrs Dorfling will start this role in 2020 and continue with her Early Literacy Support for the remainder of the year. We are also excited to announce that Crystal Giardina will continue teaching 3/4C for the rest of 2019. Retirement I would like to take this opportunity to thank Linda Davis for her hard work and commitment to the MUSIC programs across K‐6 over 16 years with our school. Linda has decided to start her retirement plans and we will be holding a special farewell assembly for her next term. She has been instrumental in choir, recorder, percussion and whole school performances.
