Moving From the Infinitive Form into Present Tense

Until now we have studied the different infinitive forms of six verb

subgroups in Binyan Pa'al. Remember, although in the past tense* all of

these verbs have the same music..a..a.., the main difference between the

various subgroups is in the sound patterns of their infinitive forms.

* Note: The..a.. a.. sound refers to: Pa'al - Past tense, singular,

masculine, 3rd person.

When moving into the present tense, all six groups regain the same

characteristic sound …o..e... (singular, masculine) thus making all of

them similar again.

Hear how similar the ..o..e sounds of the following verbs are in the

present tense, in spite of the tremendous differences in how they sound in

the infinitive form:

All we need to remember is that verbs with the characteristic sound

pattern ...o..e... in the present tense belong to Pa'al – Group 1.

the present tense.

Binyan Paal, Group 1- from Infinitive to Present

Let’s now turn infinitives in the six sub-groups of Binyan Pa’al, Group 1 into present tense.

Although the infinitive forms of the verbs in the different subgroups have

different sound patterns, in the present tense all the verbs in all the subgroups

have the same sound pattern - O..E..

In most cases the vowels in the infinitive form in this Pa'al group are:

The second group is characterized by the following structure in the

I live in one room with my little

brother.

It’s fun to live with a brother, but

The vowels in this structure in the present tense are...O...E…

The difference between group 3 and group 1 is that group 3 verbs always

end with a letter ה in the present tense.

In group 3 for feminine singular we maintain the letter ה at the end of

the verb, but the vowel sound is changed to "ah" instead of "ai"

For plural we add the ending ים for masculine and ות for feminine, but

we lose the previous last letter ה because we cannot have two

consecutive vowels ה ה
