29th April marked the first of 10 SkillsFuture@PA Marketplace roadshows to be rolled out across the island. This gives residents access to a wider range of SkillsFuture credit approved courses offered at various Community Centres/Clubs.

Filled with booths of different interests, residents were spoilt for choice as they got to experience some of SkillsFuture@PA course offerings. These includes ‘Bridal Make-up’, ‘Entrepreneurship’, ‘Malay Wedding Favours’, and ‘Unisex Haircutting’.

These courses were co-created through partnerships with various community organisations and industry experts. This provided residents with the opportunity to learn and equip themselves with the skills necessary to enhance their employability, allowing them to embark on a new career path.

Guest speaker and serial entrepreneur Daniel Ong sharing his story.

With the introduction of the first-ever T-Connect@Geylang Serai, Professionals, Managers, and Executives (PMEs) can be part of an interest group that would allow them to share ideas as well as network.

T-Connect@Geylang Serai is a collaborative effort between Geylang Serai Community Club’s Youth Executive Committee and the Lifeskills and Lifestyle Division. It aims to better understand PMEs’ concerns/interests, while serving their needs in the ever-changing economic climate.

The inaugural session saw more than 100 participants from various disciplines coming together to hear former Radio DJ and entrepreneur Daniel Ong, share his thoughts and experience along with other industry leaders. Participants were given the opportunity to engage in focus group discussions, allowing them to exchange views and draw inspiration from one another as they deliberated over topics such as disruptive technology.

With the success of this very first session, members can look forward to greater sharing of experiences that will in the words of Daniel Ong, inspire them to “persist until something happens”.

You’re never too old to learn, and some 40 seniors from our People’s Association Senior Academy proved just that. In partnership with the College of Alice & Peter Tan, NUS (NUS-CAPT), our seniors got a taste of being an undergraduate in NUS from 12 to 14 June 2017.

The 3-day programme was co-created between the seniors and student leaders prior to the camp togive seniors a first-hand experience of being an undergraduate. Through interactive and team-bonding activities between student facilitators and the seniors, they bridged the proverbial generation gap.

One of the key highlights was the “Seniors and Junior College (JC) Students Sharing Session” where the seniors and students from Eunoia JC came together to share their personal life experiences, and the students documented them as a keepsake for the seniors.

At the end of it all, these interactive and collaborative sessions not only brought everyone closer, it also brought out the best in everyone as they developed a sense of kinship and camaraderie.

Well done to all participants!

METHODMETHOD1. Preheat oven to 180oC. In a mixing bowl, mix English mustard, salt, and black pepper. Rub mixture onto

lamb and set aside.2. Mix bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, garlic, rosemary, salt, and black pepper in a bowl, and stir well. Add

the egg. Coat bread crumbs mix evenly over lamb rack. Press coating firmly onto the lamb rack. Place lamb crust-side up in baking tray, and spray with oil. Bake for 25 mins till medium doneness.

3. Meanwhile, prepare the Trio Berries Sauce by placing butter in a medium saucepan and saute onion until soft. Stir in the berries, sugar, and seasonings (except the mint leaves). Stir over medium heat until berries are mashed, and mixture begins to bubble slightly. Set aside and cool.

4. When cooled, puree berry sauce in a blender. Add mint. Blend until evenly mixed. Set aside. Once lamb is ready, remove from oven and set onto plate to rest for 5 mins before cutting. Serve with Trio Berries Sauce.

METHODMETHOD1. Heat olive oil and fry raisins briefly. Dish up. Pour in roasted vermicelli. Fry till golden

brown. Dish up, and set aside for later use. 2. Add cardamom and fry till fragrant. Add water and bring to a boil. Stir in vermicelli and

boil till soft. Add sugar and low fat milk. Stir evenly. 3. Add saffron and sago. Stir cook till mixture thickens. 4. Garnish with raisins and cashew nuts before serving.

Weekends are the best time to get the family together to bond and have fun! On 3rd June, more than 50 pairs of parent-child took part in a fitness challenge to show that families who work out together stay stronger together!

The ‘SuperFit.Family Mega Workshop’ was an opportunity for parents to bond with their children, while adopting a healthy lifestyle. Held at Ci Yuan Community Club, parents and their kids paired up as fitness partners to overcome cross-fit inspired workouts that included circuit-training and core exercises.

At the event, residents were also able to try out some of the interesting and family-friendly courses and workshops offered under the School Holiday Series.

This workshop was just one of the 1,800 courses and workshops made available under the June School Holiday Series, where parents can spend quality time with their children and create lasting memories.

All pumped up! The residents were joined by Grassroots Advisor Darryl David in the mass workout.

Residents got to try out a variety of School Holiday Series courses.

Pair workouts are not only about building muscles but also about team building and coordination!

What got you interested in baking?I come from a family of chefs and cooks, and it was only natural that I took this path as well. I learnt to bake whenI was 12, and the very first dessert I baked was a Rock Bun. I remember it wasn’t very good, but that was my very first attempt at baking. What do you enjoy baking the most?I enjoy baking and decorating birthday cakes because of the joy it brings me knowing that it is part of a celebration. I feel really happy to be able to contribute, and be part of that happiness and celebration.

How do you engage your course participants during your classes? At the start of every class, I would encourage myparticipants to learn from one another, and this helps to create a conducive environment for learning.

During class, I try to engage all their senses. For example, when I make the dough, I'll pass a sample around so that participants can feel and smell the dough. When they familiarise themselves with the texture, smell, and consistency of the ingredients, they will be more confident to try it at home.

To help my participants further their interest in baking, I often encourage them to join me in baking for charity. This allows them to practise what they have learnt in class, and at the same time give back to the community.

We caught up with Ivy as she shares her journey as a chef and Trainer, and her love for baking.
