The Sixth Sunday of Easter May 17, 2020
Dear Friends,I continue to pray that you and your family members are staying safe and healthy during these very challenging days, weeks and now months. The Covid-19 Virus continues to change every aspect of our daily lives. So many of our families have had to say goodbye to a loved one with only a few family members standing at a distance at the cemetery. No wake and no funeral liturgy allowed to offer them comfort and support. Many of our families are struggling to make ends meet financially after so many have lost their jobs. For so many reasons and on so many levels the past 8 weeks have changed the way we live.
The question on most peoples minds is when will some normalcy return. I have received many calls and emails asking me when will the Archdiocese allow us to reopen our churches. When will our weekend liturgies return? At this point no decisions have been made and no timeline has been set for this to happen. I have been a part of many Zoom and webinars on the diocesan level during the past two weeks to begin to formulate a plan when this does happen. What is very obvious already in this discussion is that things will be different and new ways of operation will be mandated. A whole new set of challenges await us for how and when liturgies are celebrated.
I am scheduled to meet this week with both the Parish Council and Finance Council members of
Most Blessed Sacrament to begin the discussion of what the future may hold for the parish. I will also be scheduling a similar meeting very soon with the members of both councils from Incarnation to do the same. The financial impact on both parishes is significant and some necessary changes will need to be made going forward. These initial discussions will greatly benefit any future decisions that will need to be made. I am optimistic that working together with open minds and hearts that our future will be positive and affirming but also realizing that it will be different for sure.Have a good week.
FR STEVE

FOOD RESOURCES FOR VETERANSThe Melrose Veterans Services Office would like to share a couple of opportunities for food assistance to Veterans and surviving spouses. First, the Melrose Veterans Services Office partners with the Greater Boston Food Bank to provide food to Veterans and their surviving spouses the third Wednesday of the month. Currently they offer a drive-thru food pantry. If you are unable to pick up, they will deliver to you. Please call 781-979-4186 to register. This offering is year round. In addition, there is now another offering for food assistance in the North Shore. Many of you may have heard about the food distribution for Veterans that was held at Gillette Stadium. In order to make this more accessible to Veterans on the North Shore, the Veterans Northeast Outreach Center and Massachusetts Military Support Foundation Food4Vets is bringing the food drive to the North Shore and Merrimack Valley! They have partnered together with local VSOs to offer assistance to Massachusetts Veterans experiencing limited access to food due to COVID 19. They will be holding drive-through food distribution events on Wednesdays from April 22nd through May 13. Distributions will be held on alternate weeks at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill and North Shore Community College in Danvers. Veterans will need to pre-register. If you are a Melrose, Wakefield or Saugus Veteran and are unable to pick up your food, please register and then contact Melrose VSO Karen Burke at [email protected] or [email protected] to arrange delivery
assistance. At this time they are able to offer delivery assistance for the Danvers distribution.
CATHOLIC APPEALThe launch of the Catholic Appeal will be postponed until May or another weekend that would be well suited for the parish. For those who wish to make a contribution currently can do so online (www.bostoncatholicappeal.org) or through the request you may have received in the mail.

THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTERMAY 17, 2020
Remembering the TruthIt is a human thing to remember the past. We do it in part to understand better who we are now and how we got that way.
That is why remembering is one definition of liturgy. Under God’s impetus we remember what it means to be a follower of Christ today. Especially in this Easter season, the Church is recalling its experience in the weeks after Jesus died and rose again.
Let us pretend that we are the historical disciples of Jesus, calling to mind what happened. It is as if we sit around a memory campfire, telling stories.
Remember when Philip said to Jesus, ‘Just show us the Father and that will be enough for us?’ Of course he was at that very moment seeing Jesus and therefore seeing the Father, but did not know it!
Maybe someone moves closer to the fire and says,Do you remember the words he said just before his passion and death? That he would send the Spirit of Truth into our hearts! And that we would not be left orphans!
“Go over it one more time,” Someone else whispers. Bravely, one of them tries to.
“God the Abba is so much within Jesus that every time we see him we are seeing God.”
Philip nods, reluctantly.
“Then Jesus said”:
I will be so much within you—yes, you normal people—that when anyone sees you it will be the same thing as seeing me! And of course, since the Father is in me, they will know the Father too!
5
Incarnation Parish Bulletin Philip gulped. “I … I almost have it … maybe … or maybe not. … Please say it another way.”
“Ok. If I boil it down, this is what I understood of what I remember. Jesus said,
I am going back to the Father, back to the one who sent me. The world will not see me any more. But that doesn’t make me absent from you. I and the Abba will be within you so that your very insides will be at one with my Spirit and the Father’s Spirit.
“Then he put it very simply:
Who sees mesees the Father.
Who sees yousees me.
Philip somehow caught a glimpse of daylight.
At least, we find him in the First Reading running from place to place doing miracles and preaching about the Messiah! As scripture puts it,
With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip, when they heard it, and saw the signs he was doing:
Unclean spirits, crying out in a loud voice, came out of many possessed people, and many paralyzed or crippled people were cured.
There was great joy in that city.
Do you also see daylight, at least on some days?
Do you remember to say yes to Christ’s presence within you? Do you touch and receive communion at Mass and let yourself evolve into Christ, in the world today? Is your life an increasing process of saying “yes,” or is there too much “no”? If the latter, read Sunday’s readings again.
Simple? Not really.
Well, maybe it is simple. Just receive and love.

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICE
God With UsIn today’s Gospel Jesus promises us that “I will not leave you orphaned; I will come back to you and you will have life.” Our faith, nurtured in this great paschal season, tells us that God-made-flesh is God-with-us, never abandoning us and always filling us with life.
It should be a great comfort to all of us, who share in the pain and suffering of ordinary life, to know that the Spirit of Jesus is with us always. It should be especially comforting to know that Jesus will not leave orphaned all those whom the world casts aside: the poor and homeless, the racial and ethnic minorities, the sick and dying, the prisoner and the refugee.
“Christ died for sins once for all, a just man for the sake of the unjust.” He rescued us from our attachment to injustice, and then he sent his Spirit to remain with us and within us. Our prayer is one
6
Incarnation Parish Bulletin of gratitude for such a gift and hope that “we feel its saving power in our daily life.”
Jesus loves us so much that, even after his death, resurrection, and ascension, he remains with us. He is, after all, Emanuel, ‘God with us,’ but now through his living, sanctifying Spirit.
We now encounter him in new ways: in other human beings; in any place where people gather in his name; in the inspired words of Holy Scripture; in his Church, particularly her liturgical celebrations; in the person of his minister; and especially in the sacraments.

WORKING WITH THE WORD
Focusing the GospelKey words and phrases: keep my commandments, Spirit of truth, world … neither sees nor knows, you will see me, you will live, one who loves me, loved by my Father
To the point: In John’s gospel, “world” refers to everything opposed to God and being obedient to Jesus’ commandments. The world sees neither Jesus nor the “Spirit of truth”; faithful disciples do. The world does not love; faithful dis- ciples do. The world does not have life; faithful disciples do. Faithful disciples see, love, and live because of the Father’s gift of the Spirit dwelling within them. This divine indwelling is God’s very love. We are to be God’s love made visible, that the world may see Jesus, come to the truth, and choose to live in faithful love.
Connecting the Gospel …… to the Second Reading: Peter is writing to a community who has welcomed “Christ as Lord in [their] hearts” and has remained faithful by their “good conduct in Christ.” These disciples have heeded what Jesus asks in the Gospel: to keep his commandments. Through their faithfulness, the world that conducts itself with evil is “put to shame.”
… to experience: The world and its trappings are attractive. The “Spirit of truth” poured into our hearts by the Father leads us to discern where true satisfaction lies: in Jesus himself and being faithful to love as he has loved us.
