DescriptionDemonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Incorporating color into a poster layout with original photo.
ProgramAdobe Photoshop Olympus Camera
Date Completed2/8/14
CourseCOMM130 Section 5 Visual MediaCory Kerr
ObjectivesLearn basic photography skills and photoship skills. Size and crop the image. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.
ProcessI first formulated my plan by choosing a color scheme from the Visual FOCUS book for my layout. My color scheme was Primary Colors. I went and captured a quality photo with good light, sharp focus, and nice composition with my Olympus camera. I then brought the photo into Photoshop and used these specific editing techniques: levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. I designed an 8.5×11 layout which included my photo, text, and repeating design elements. I incorporated my color scheme title, color swatches, and color names into my design. I loved the curved lines that I created using the ellipse tool so I made a couple more and change the colors so they could be my swatch. Now my whole picture has the flow and rhythm that I envisioned.

ObjectivesSet up and align a two-sided, folded document. Learn how to wrap text around an image. Use paragraph styles in InDesign
ProcessI set up the gateway fold in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into six sections with the concept that the two outer sections would be the flaps of the brochure and the three middle sections would be the ‘body’ of the brochure. I used black color as a background throughout the brochure to create repetition and flow. I deliberately chose jewelry photos that showed what type of jewelry the shop deals with. For the image of the ring, I used the mask tool to cut out black back ground in Photoshop. I also used text wrap tool to give a flow in the text. The logo represents the name of the shop in Korean, which makes itself more unique and creative. I created the logo in Illustrator using the pathfinder tool and then I placed it into InDesign, where I used the scissors tool to cut the logo. I placed the left half on the right flap and the right half on the left flap so that when the brochure is folded the logo would come together nicely.

ObjectivesCreate a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.Use the basic tools of Illustrator.
ProcessI used the ellipse tool to create the basic shape of the top logo. Then I made rectangles with the ellipse tool again. This created a piano shape one the bottom of the circle. Most of the other elements are just typography. I made sure to choose fonts from contrasting categories to capitalize on the contrast. I also tried getting some more contrast by changing the font size of the words and the background color.

ObjectivesFind, scan, and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Use text boxes for layout in MS Word. Insert and edit images in MS Word.
ProcessI scanned the flower image, and bring it to a new word document. I chose a similar teal color as background color because it gives uniformity in this ad. Colors that I used are pink, teal, and orange since the combination of these three colors is one of color wheels. And, I tried to align the body copy and have repetition with the dots. I also designed it as a wrapped present.

ObjectivesCreate a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustratorand InDesign.
ProcessI created the logo using simple shapes in Adobe Illustrator. By using the pen tool, I created a skate shoe shape and made it more like a logo. Once the logo was created, I opened a new two page InDesign document and placed my logo .AI file into this document. I decided to make my first page a letterhead. I positioned the placed logo in the top left corner of my letterhead. I made sure to keep it at least .5” away from the edges. I then typed the name, the contact information into a text box on a path.

ObjectivesCreate a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustratorand InDesign.
ProcessI used the same logo for this letterhead as the one in the business card. I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline of my business card. I made two staight lines near the top and bottom that connect the flow from the curve. I make it more unique by align the name and the information along the curve. I made sure that no important information came any closer than .5” from the edges.

FlierDescriptionA black and white, clear, and informative flier for the leadership conference for
graduating students.
ProgramInDesign
Date Completed1/24/14
CourseCOMM130 Section 5 Visual MediaCory Kerr
ObjectivesApply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Learn how to keep links intact.
ProcessI made about eight sketches with pencils and pens before I actually got the layout of this flier that I wanted. Then, I began creating a draft using Adobe InDesign. I used some contrast for the title and the date because I thought those were the most important parts. Also, I used a picture with a woman, pointing at a direction with her hand. it draws the audience’s attention and makes a flow throughout the content. I was given the logo, image, and text for this flier.

ObjectivesSize and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to descrtibe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Identify hex colors for web design.
ProcessI created this web page using only TextWrangler. It was also interesting to use the http://www.W3.org HTML validator. After I marked up all my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I then used Photoshop by using the eyedropper too to extract the color hex from my logo as the colors for my web page. I also changed my fonts to Times New Roman and Tahoma. I declared some backup fonts just in case the viewer’s browser didn’t have these fonts. I also used padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page.
MontageDescriptionAn inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography.
ProgramPhotoshop
Date Completed2/15/14
CourseCOMM130 Section 5 Visual MediaCory Kerr
ObjectivesLearn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.
ProcessI cropped the background image to 8.5×11 and then, I dragged the image of the kids to the background image, then I added a mask. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges. With a larger black brush at 20% opacity and 25% flow, I blended the image into the background, so it looks like they are melting into the scene. I repeated the process with the airplane ticket, and I also dragged the entire image to the background image and started masking it until it was a gradual blend. I added some type with two contrasting fonts and I added a layer style, Inner shadow and inner glow, to make the text more legible.
