BS1 is a computer-based instructionalmodule that has been designed to teachthe fundamentals of hydraulic systems.

The module incorporates both hardwareand curriculum materials.

The hardware is provided in the form of abench-top hydraulics trainer.

The curriculum materials provided in the

module are divided into a series of on-screen, interactive assignments.

All assignments incorporate continuousassessment through questions. When usedin conjunction with a ClassAct networked

management system, this provides instantfeedback of student performance.

    On-screen assignments may be theory-

    based or practical-based.

    Theory-based assignments provide

    essential knowledge of fundamentalhydraulic principles.

Practical-based assignments directstudents to carry out tasks in thelaboratory using the supplied hardware.

Students are guided through theirlaboratory tasks by printable jobsheets.

    Hydraulics trainer

This module is based around a hydraulicstrainer that allows the student to

undertake a series of hands-on tasks thatrelate to hydraulic systems. The trainer is

complete with all the hydraulic devices,

connectors, mechanical and electricalcomponents needed to study the topicslisted below.

    Curriculum material topics include:

    Hydraulic accumulators.Pressure drop in a hydraulic circuit.Heat generation and dissipation.Speed control systems.Hydraulic circuits.Compression of gases.Hydraulic damping system.Pressure relief valve.Check valves.Pascal's Law.Energy flow in a hydraulic system.Hydraulic lever.Hydraulic cylinders.Defines a hydraulic system.Hydrostatic principles.Input and output.Lobe, gear and vane pumps.

    Typical practical tasks include:

Investigate the use of cylinders in theautomobile.

Test the compressibility of fluids.Identify Pascals law and its relationship to

    pressures within hydraulic circuits.

Build a hydraulic circuit that includes acontrol valve.

Simulate a hydraulic disc brake system.Calculate cylinder volume, pressure, and

    efficiency.

Control a sequence of cylinders.Investigate systems that use high pressure

    hydraulics.

Work with hydraulic systems that operateas a safety system.

    Identify how heat affects hydraulicsystems.

    Select cylinders for an industrialapplication.

Solve problems with hydraulic systems.Competence-based reporting

Each on-screen assignment is designedaround a list of performance objectives.

These include academic, technical, andoccupational objectives.

The assignments are written in such a way

as to enable a student to attain theperformance objectives, with the assessmentquestions linked to these in order to provide

    a measure of true competency.

The performance objectives are used by the

ClassAct management system to generate acomprehensive portfolio of student

    competency reports.

The module includes a default competencereport addressing the latest NATEFstandards.

    Instructor Materials

A range of instructor materials is provided, including:

An Instructor Guide, containing fullinstallation instructions, health & safetyguidance, typically completed work, and

    correct answers to all questions.

A checklist that identifies how theassignments address NATEF requirements.

Student assessment sheets (allowingstudent tasks to be assessed againstspecific NATEF statements), plus assessor

    marking sheets.

Student response sheets (allowingstudents to record their questionresponses if the ClassAct management

    system is not available)

Health and safety sheets.Chemical safety data sheets.
