What is matter?
anything that has mass and
occupies space.
Three states of matter
• SOLIDS
• LIQUIDS
• GASES
SOLID
A solid has a definite or fixed shape.
• When a solid is placed into a container, it does not take up the shape of the container.
• If you want to change its shape, you have to knock, press or stretch it.
A solid has a definite or fixed volume.
It cannot be compressed easily
What about sponge and cotton wool?
They can be squeezed easily into the hole because they are soft and contain lots of air pockets.
Can a plastic box be squeezedinto a small hole?
It has a definite shape and volume and cannot be squeezed to fit into the small hole.
LIQUID
A Liquid has no definite shape
• When a liquid is poured into a container, it takes the shape of the container.
A Liquid has a fixed or definite volume
A liquid occupies a fixed amount of space.
A liquid cannot be compressed
GAS
A gas has no definite shape
A gas takes up the shape of the container that holds it.
A gas has no definite volume
• Gas can be easily compressed
