Piper hopped off the bus and took her first step onto the lush green grass. She looked around as unfamiliar faces ran toward each other, embracing, wearing the biggest smiles she had ever seen. She was nervous, scared, and a little confused. An older girl in a light blue tee shirt and white shorts approached her, holding a clipboard. "Hi there! You look a little lost." The older girl waved one of the boys over to take Piper's bags. "My name is Rosie. I'll help you find your cabin. What's your name, sweetheart?" Piper stared up at Rosie with her big green eyes in her opposite apparel of a white shirt and light blue shorts her mom had laid out on the floor of her bedroom the night before. "Piper Marshall", she managed to squeak out. At that very moment, Piper was whisked away by Rosie's hand, leading her to two new girls holding a giant white sign with the number 10 painted on it rather sloppily. The girls looked around the same age as Rosie, maybe a little younger. Rosie left, and Piper found herself standing next to two strangers. She continued to observe all of the boys and girls around her as they began to walk across the field toward a row of cabins. She stood for a few minutes before the two older girls made an awkward attempt at an introduction. "Hey, your name is Piper, right?" "Yeah," Piper responded. "Who are you guys?" The girl holding the sign spoke first, "I'm Tate. I'm your counselor for the summer!" "And I'm Jane. I'm also your counselor, and we're really excited to have you in our cabin!" All of the remaining buses rolled away from the grassy area. "I guess that's our cue to head back to the bunk. Everyone must be waiting back there." Piper followed Tate and Jane back to the cabin where she had seen all of the other campers running toward earlier. Piper stood outside of the cabin on the black pavement. She admired the light brown wood that held the small building together. She read the blue sign with white numbers and letters carved into the rectangular plank. "Cabin 10". This would be her new home for the next two weeks. The boy who had taken her bag earlier had dropped it off right in front of the door to the cabin. It stared at her, begging her to pick it up and bring it inside. This was it. It was time for Piper to go into the cabin and meet the girls she'd be spending the next fourteen days with. She grabbed the bag and stepped up onto the porch. Girls were screaming with joy on the other side of the door. Piper winced with fear of what was about to occur. She felt everyone's eyes glare for a quick moment as she creaked the screen door open, but the girls almost immediately returned to what they were doing prior to Piper's arrival. Piper scanned the room, anxiously awaiting the moment she would see her name written on a name tag taped to either a top or bottom bunk bed. She prayed it would be a bottom bunk. Her friends from home had told her about sleeping on a top bunk. She could hear the voices in her head saying things like, "Make sure you don't get a top bunk because it's so much harder to make your bed" and "If you get a bottom bunk, it's so much better because you don't have to worry

"Hey, your name is Piper, right?"

"Yeah," Piper responded. "Who are you guys?"

The girl holding the sign spoke first, "I'm Tate. I'm your counselor for the summer!"

"And I'm Jane. I'm also your counselor, and we're really excited to have you in our cabin!" Allof the remaining buses rolled away from the grassy area. "I guess that's our cue to head back to thebunk. Everyone must be waiting back there." Piper followed Tate and Jane back to the cabin whereshe had seen all of the other campers running toward earlier.

Piper stood outside of the cabin on the black pavement. She admired the light brown woodthat held the small building together. She read the blue sign with white numbers and letters carved intothe rectangular plank. "Cabin 10". This would be her new home for the next two weeks. The boywho had taken her bag earlier had dropped it off right in front of the door to the cabin. It stared ather, begging her to pick it up and bring it inside. This was it. It was time for Piper to go into the cabinand meet the girls she'd be spending the next fourteen days with.  She grabbed the bag and steppedup onto the porch. Girls were screaming with joy on the other side of the door. Piper winced withfear of what was about to occur.  She felt everyone's eyes glare for a quick moment as she creakedthe screen door open, but the girls almost immediately returned to what they were doing prior toPiper's arrival. Piper scanned the room, anxiously awaiting the moment she would see her namewritten on a name tag taped to either a top or bottom bunk bed. She prayed it would be a bottombunk. Her friends from home had told her about sleeping on a top bunk. She could hear the voices inher head saying things like, "Make sure you don't get a top bunk because it's so much harder tomake your bed" and "If you get a bottom bunk, it's so much better because you don't have to worry

about dropping things from the top bunk!"

Phew, Piper thought to herself. Bottom bunk.

***MOLLY: My story is kind of straying away from a "fairy tale", but I think that it'llserve its purpose as a story with a moral value pertaining to gossip and gender by the timethe final draft is submitted. I've never really written anything in a narrative sense for anactual paper. Most of the writing I've done is coming from me in the first person. I like towrite about what I know. I went to a summer camp in Pennsylvania every summer since Iwas 8 years old, so this story is more familiar to me than making up a story off the top ofmy head. Piper is new at a camp where most campers return every summer. I want thisstory to be about Piper feeling left out and starting a rumor about another girl in her cabinto try and fit in, attempting to turn the other girls against the one girl the rumors are beingspread about. I'm not quite sure how to condense 2 weeks into this paper or if I even needto condense the two weeks, but I'm having a little bit of trouble figuring out the rightamount of dialogue and the over pace of the paper. I tend to be more descriptive than Iprobably should be, rather than carrying on with the plot. I'm also not sure what I want therumor to be yet, so I'm stumped regarding where to move on from here. The last flaw is thatI'm not sure how old I should make Piper. Maybe 11 or 12?

Potential timeline from this point forward:

Bunkmate approaches her (bunkmate might be the victim to the gossip crime)

Time for first meal, no one talks to Piper

Piper later catches bunkmate doing something a little strange, but bunkmate isn't aware Pipersaw

Other girls start being gossipy and sort of cold toward Piper

Piper lets out bunkmate's strange habit to one of the other girls in the cabin

Rumor spreads

*maybe something with the boys' side of camp will come into play… maybe not.

Piper gets in trouble with counselors, feels super guilty

Camp is over

Piper's mom and her have a conversation about what happened with the gossiping at camp

Story ends with Piper writing in her diary about what she learned from the experience.
