The four Rs Activity

Shred or rip the newspaper intobits and soak it in warm water(overnight if possible - thelonger the better)

When the soaked paper is soft, mash with a potato masheruntil it's really mushy.

Put the paper pulp into theshallow tray and add morewater. The tray should be halffull of water.

Mix the pulp so that it's evenlyspread

Spread the pulp evenly overthe mesh using your hands

Carefully lift out the mesh andplace on some spare newspaperto drain.

Place another piece ofnewspaper on top of the pulp, and carefully turn the wholething over so that the mesh isnow on top of the pulp andfacing you. Leave both sectionsof newspaper in place.

Now place your piece of woodor book onto the newspaperand push it down to squeezeout the water.

Leave to dry for a least 3 hoursor longer, depending on thethickness of the paper.

Making recycled paper (You may need anadult to help with this activity)

You will need: 1. Newspaper 2. Bucket of water 3. Potato masher 4. Tray or flat baking pan5. Mesh (chicken wire or netting) 6. Large book or piece of wood

Recycle Not surprisingly, the main material thrown away by

schools is paper, which makes up at least a quarter

of the waste produced by schools. Contact the

recycling officer at your local council to see if they

can provide your school with a paper recycling bin.

Then, set up a system of paper collection from each

classroom which can be taken to the main recycling

bin at the end of each day or week. Set up a composting scheme or a worm composter

for food & green waste, including all the teachers’

tea bags and your own fruit scraps. Again your local

council's recycling officer may be able to help here.

In some cases, compost bins can be provided to

schools free of charge. Encourage your school to buy and use recycled

paper and other recycled things.

Place the piece of mesh in thetray. The paper pulp shouldfloat up above the mesh.
