Contemporary education based on faith and tradition
AKAL ACADEMYB A R U S A H I B
OUR MISSIONThe world today needs people who are honest, virtuous,
selfless and compassionate and can show restraint
despite extreme provocation; also who can show path of love
and can have the capacity to give without yearning for returns.
To fulfill this acute need of developing human beings with such
sterling qualities and lofty ideals our founding Father Sant Attar
Singh Ji declared our Mission Statement in 1906, almost eight
decades before the first Akal Academy was established. This reads,
“To establish permanent peace in the world through value based
scientific education and spiritual upliftment and provide solace and
succor to the downtrodden and the deprived.”
The basic tenets of spirituality teach us to share, to do 'sewa'
(selfless service) and meditation, and to dedicate our life to
'Parupkar' (philanthropy). It advocates dismantling of all barriers
and boundaries, embracing humanity and wanting 'Sarbat Da
Bhala' (Universal Brotherhood). These are the principles which
Guru Nanak Dev Ji enunciated five centuries ago and they are as
relevant in the strife ridden world of today as in the past - albeit even
more so.
T
THE BACKGROUND
S ant Attar Singh Ji, spent his initial years in deep
meditation and sewa. Developing and nurturing minds in
pursuit of Truth and through them bringing about lasting
peace in the world was his life's objective. To achieve this, he
strongly advocated growth of educational institutions which
had a spiritual base and promoted ancient Indian culture,
values, morals and humility. He first set up a school for girls in
1906 and thereafter a school for boys and then the Akal Degree
College at Mastuana in Punjab. Himself a Brahamgiani (an
enlightened soul), he presided over several annual sessions of
Spiritual Educational Conferences and gave divine guidance to
all. On request by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, a great social
reformer of his time, Sant Ji laid the foundation stone of the
first college at Banaras Hindu University at Varanasi in India.Sant Attar Singh Ji inspired Sant Teja Singh Ji MA, LLB, (Punjab)
AM (Harvard), Principal of Khalsa College, Amritsar to promote this
unique mission. He sent Sant Teja Singh Ji to the US to get
advanced training in the field of education from Columbia
University at New York and later master's degree in education from
the Harvard University at Boston in USA (1904-06). On his return
from the US, Sant Teja Singh Ji pioneered several High Schools and
Colleges and worked as Principal of many renowned educational
institutions. In deference to the wishes of Sant Attar Singh Ji, he
identified Baru Sahib, as 'Tapo Bhoomi' (secret & divine place) of
saints & sages, who meditated here in the past and laid the
foundation of the 'Guru Nanak International Institute of Spirituality
and Education' in 1956.Later,he also established Kalghidhar
Trust/Society to actually work upon and achieve the objectives laid
down in the Mission Statement
THE PRESENT
R esponding to the clarion call of Sant
Attar Singh Ji and Sant Teja Singh Ji,
who envisioned to rebuild the nation on
laudable values of self realization, discipline,
service to the mankind and social harmony,
Akal Academy, Baru Sahib was established
by Rev. Baba Iqbal Singh ji (Retd. Director
Agriculture, HP) and Padma Bhushan Dr.
Khem Singh ji (Ex. Vice Chancellor Punjab
Agriculture University, Ludhiana) in 1986. It
is a unique academic centre, having
comprehensive arrangements for imparting
wor ldly sc ient i f ic educat ion in an
environment conducive for spiritual
evolution. This Co- educational English
Medium Residential Senior Secondary School
is affiliated to the Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.
Ensconced in beautiful sylvan surroundings,
amidst lush green meadows and fresh water
springs and located far from the maddening
crowd in a distant and remote corner of
Himachal Pradesh, Akal Academy, Baru
Sahib, is the divine prediction of one of the
greatest saints of this era, Sant Attar Singh Ji,
who had envisioned in the early twenties of the
last century that children endowed with
s p i r i t u a l w i s d o m w o u l d
disseminate from this place and
spread the message of universal
brotherhood. This would go a
long way in establ ishing
permanent peace in the world,
which today is full of malice,
jealously, frustration, anger and
greed.
Initially a mirage for many, it has
now emerged to be a source of
inspiration and guiding spirit for
many an educational institution.
It has caught imagination of the
masses, who wish their children
to become not only trained
professionals but good human
beings as well. The legacy of
'Guru' and 'Shishya' in the
Gurukul traditions, that has been
bequeathed upon us, is not only
being maintained and nurtured
but redefined as well, to suit the
changing times.
OBJECTIVES
T oday's youth stands on crossroads. Students have an easy access to the media which
exposes them to the materialistic glare. Children are thus getting divorced from the ancient culture, as also their glorious heritage. Required today are schools which can offer the children latest technological developments in a pure, stimulating and spiritual environment away from the destabilizing influence of the media.
We need Gurukuls which can strengthen the roots of our children, expose them to the spiritual realm, teach them to have respect for values and morals and develop in them the uncanny ability to discern right from wrong. Keeping the above in view, Akal Academy, Baru Sahib has been established to achieve the following objectives:-
To develop in the students a trained intellect to enable them to adjust themselves in the fast changing world.
To create among the students a strong sense of duty and discipline.
To inculcate in students a love for nature and respect for all forms of life.
To help students to become better human beings through process of self-realization and service to the mankind.
To cultivate in the students a mind which is aware and awake.
To instill in the students a global outlook and sense of belongingness to the whole humanity.
To have zeal to do the best in all domains of life.
To motivate the students to achieve excellence in whatever field they participate.
And above all, to equip them to tread the path of sewa and simran and through it to be one with Almighty.

STUDENTS CODE OF CONDUCT RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE SCHOOL
Every student who is granted admission in the school pledges to observe willingly all the Rules and Regulations of the School and to uphold and respect the principles on which the institute is founded. It is also to be understood that on breaking this solemn pledge, the student forfeits his/her membership of the school. It is the duty of each student to perform all tasks assigned to him / her in connection with the functioning of the school to the best of his / her ability. Parents/Guardians are expected to reinforce this in the child's mind and guide their ward accordingly. Some of the salient points in this regard are given below:
1. All Sikh students are required to follow the Sikh spiritual and religious way of life (including partaking of AMRIT through the Sikh way of baptism) being taught in the school and practice the Tenets of Sikhism in letter and spirit. They have to keep their hair intact and are not allowed to cut them from any part of their body. Any deviation from the Sikh religious principles, especially of cutting of hair will lead to strict action that may lead to expulsion of the child from the School.
2. All Non- Sikh students, while remaining in their own religion, shall follow the spiritual cum moral studies and programmes being carried out in the Academy during their stay in the School. They shall strictly adhere to the School uniform (dress code) of the Academy mentioned in the School Prospectus.
