CABERFIX X-TREME TAPE is a tape designed for use with CaberDekchipboard flooring in cold and wintry conditions.

X-Treme tape can be applied inthe same way as CaberFix Tape —applying it over the joints ofCaberDek film and over the

boards’ exposed edges on the perimeter to create a waterproof chip-board floor deck.

The standard cloth tape, CaberFix Tape, is made with an adhesive thathas reduced performance at temperatures below 8° C. CaberFix X-TremeTape should be used as an alternative in colder conditions for optimumperformance. CaberFix X-Treme Tape contains a super strong acrylic ad-

hesive that has a high initial tack and will notcrack in extreme weather conditions, keepingthe board waterproof. CaberFix X-Treme Tapeworks in extreme temperatures as low as –21° C.Though it does not bond to ice, X-Treme Tapebonds well in damp conditions, displacing water, and its scruff resistant properties means it won’tlift with foot traffic. X-Treme Tape has been testedon-site by house builders during extreme frostand ponded boards. It has also been tested atBBA for long-term immersion.

X-Treme Tape is covered by, and has beentested by, the BBA. When installing CaberDekchipboard flooring the tape must be used in con-junction with CaberFix D3 glue in the T&G joints, and CaberFix Joint&Joist glue to bond the boardto joists to receive the BBA certification. Correctinstallation ensures CaberDek will be protectedfrom weather, moisture and construction messfor up to 42 days whilst retaining its BBA guar-antee, after which the film can be peeled awayleaving a clean chipboard floor ready for carpetsor laminate.NorbordTel 01786 812921 l www.norbord.co.uk

Lamont matrix table & Woodwelder for Shaker 2 GoSHAKER 2 GO is a specialist manufacturer ofShaker doors, specialising in doors for wardrobesand kitchens. Based in a medium sized workshopin Kent and working with Medite moisture-resis-tant MDF, the company offers Shaker doors in anysize up to a maximum of 2,430 mm x 800 mm andhas, through liaising with the client, been able tomanufacture doors up to 10 ft high.

Managing director, Phil Temple, invested in amatrix table and Woodwelder from Lamont, to speedup production and to further improve the quality ofthe product.

“We manufacture doors in batches, and we used touse 30 minute polyurethane glue with sash clamps, stacking them while they dried. We were running outof space and clamps, and the process was a bit long,”Phil told Panel, Wood & Solid Surface.

When asked “Why Lamont?” Phil replied, “Therewasn't really any other choice for us. Lamont kept popping up on the sec-ond hand market so I thought I would take a look. I didn't want a secondhand machine and there was also the question of the Woodwelder, whichall came as part of one solution for us.

“Now, we have no need to stack clamps and there is no need to tidy upclamps after use. It has sped up our production probably I would say 10-15 fold and, in combination with the Woodwelder, has made us a moreprofessional workshop. We can turn orders around much more quicklyand the quality of the work is much better. We know the doors arestraight when they are clamped, equal pressure is applied to all sides andevery single joint is solid. We use the matrix table and Woodwelder onevery single door that we do: it is a tremendous time saver.”

Asked if he would recommend the matrix table and Woodwelder, Philreplied, “Yes, I would definitely recommend it. When we first took it on I

was a little sceptical as I looked at the machine and thought about howmuch we had spent on it, but within a week I knew it was a right choice. We had never used a Woodwelder before, but it worked perfectly.

“Alan [Lamont] has been really good from start to finish, guiding howthings work without being a salesman, giving us a very honest insightinto it. We knew we needed it, and he was happy we had done our re-search. It has been a great help to us in moving forward and has enabledus to move into other areas. If we were to expand further, perhaps takeon contract work, we would probably take on another matrix table andWoodwelder as if you have two joiners doing the work, you need twomachines.

RH WILSON (Lakes) Ltd, situated as the name suggests in the LakeDistrict, is an independent privately owned timber importing com-pany, run by joint owners Ann and Rodney Dalton. When they tookover the business in 2013, one of Rodney’s priorities was to improvethe efficiency of storage, handling and stock location procedures. Thanks to a combination of Combilift multidirectional forklifts andracking in the 40,000 ft2 warehousing areas, some startling resultshave been achieved.

The company specialises in grading timber for specific end use, whether it be redwood and hardwood for joineries making doors andwindows, or whitewood for pallet and packaging manufacturers. It de-livers its wide range of products “from Guernsey to Glasgow” from its basein Kirby Stephen and also offers bespoke sawing, x-cutting, grading, planing and moulding facilities.

Packs of products were previously block stacked and moved aroundwith two-directional sideloaders or counterbalance trucks. “We did a de-tailed study of how long it was taking us to retrieve a specific pack andwere alarmed at the figures,” said Rodney. “We were spending a substan-tial amount of time a day moving packs around and needed at least twoemployees to do this so it really added up in terms of hours and man-power. My first thought was out with free stacking, in with as much rack-ing as possible and then find a manoeuvrable forklift capable of workingin tight spaces.” Following advice from Steve Tomlinson of Combilift andracking specialists, the new system was installed in October 2018.

“The time saving has been enormous,” said Rodney. “We are down to

five minutes per pack — or four minutes 23 seconds to be precise! —which makes a huge difference when dealing with the four to sevenartics a day that we typically load or unload. Quick stock location enablesus to adhere to just in time delivery schedules. A knock-on bonus is thatwe now only need 30 minutes for the monthly stocktake compared toaround two and a half hours previously.”

The new racking enabled three extra working aisles to be created, withwidths of 2,370 mm — down from over 3,000 mm needed with the oldsystem — and going to a height of 5.5 m also created more vertical stor-age. Three hundred packs of timber with lengths ranging from just over2 m to almost 6 m can now be accommodated. The 4 t capacity of thenewest of the two Combilifts on site, a C4000 diesel powered model, copeseasily when the heaviest 3.5 t loads need to be lifted to the top bays. It isfitted with guide rollers for guided aisle operation, making it quick andeasy for drivers to access and travel down the aisles. This system also en-hances safety procedures a swell as reducing the risk of product damage.

Rodney was familiar with the Combilift brand as he had a C3000 modelat a previous business and was impressed with its reliability as well as theengineering, quality and the general ethos of the Irish manufacturer: “Ilike the relative simplicity of Combilift’s products — more hi tech can justmean more problems in my experience — and our local service engineerfinds the truck straightforward to maintain. The racking and the Combiliftwere not the cheapest options on the market, but as I have found outover many years it can cost money trying to save it, so we are extremelyhappy with the way this has worked out. So much so that we are lookingat another Combilift when we embark on the next phase of our plannedexpansion.”RH Wilson (Lakes) Ltd l https://rhwilsontimber.co.uk

THE “On the Leading EDGE-Banding” event organised bySCM at its production site inThiene (Vicenza) from 7 to 9November came to a close on ahigh note with a significantturnout from all over the world(Europe, China, the Far East andSouth America) and key large-scale furniture producers of in-ternational renown who cameto see for themselves the newSCM “batch 1” and Industry 4.0flexible industrial edgebandingsystems, which held centrestage during the event.

Flexibility, integration and au-tomation: these are the corner-stones of the new “Stefani Cell”range, designed and developed tofully interpret and meet the de-mands for efficiency, high produc-tion and customisation fromtoday’s market.

The edgebander or squaringedgebander machine is integratedinto cells and plants fitted withrollers, panel return devices, auto-matic loading and unloading sys-tems, assisted by robots and fittedwith IoT sensors to guarantee im-mediate digital services in supportof an optimal functioning of themachine.

Industry visitors showed con-siderable interest in the high inno-vative level of these new solutions. They also appreciated the widerobjective of this event: to offer ageneral overview of key furnitureand design trends for which theindustrial edgebanding process is

increasingly more decisive, withdemonstrations and detailedexplanations.

“Today’s edgebanding is aprocess which can make a gen-uine difference to the aestheticvalue of an end product” explainsFabio Cernoia, business managerfor SCM Edgebanding.

“This is why we focus on alwaysgiving greater added value to ourclients in the furniture industrywith applications which not onlyguarantee high productivity andflexibility for a simple, rapid ma-chining of increasingly smaller

batches, but can also ensure thata quality finishing and a great lookis achieved on all kinds of panels,”he continues.

This is the new SCM solutions’aim as well as the vast programmeof workshops organised in collab-oration with industry techno-logical partners. Four topics werecovered:l Threespine Click FurnitureTechnology, the furniture with ex-cellent results, which can easily beassembled in one click. SCM hasdesigned new customised tech-nological solutions for this new

market trend, based on the client’sspecific needs;l Eco-friendly furniture, withdemonstrations and detailed ex-planations of edgebanding withveneered edges, 100% recycledpanels, SCM Slimline systems for azero glue line and Stefani ShapeTechnology softforming applica-tions for timber shaped profiles;l The future of polyurethaneglues with a study of less harmfulPU glues which are longer lastingand reduce emissions and waste;l New trends on edges, with thepresentation of SCM solutions fordecorative edgebanding withattractive results on the panel.Crystal Decor is a clear example, for an exclusive glass effectlaminate.

prestigious Red Dot Award 2019(Brands & Communication Design2019 category). Of fundamentalimportance is also the integrationwith Maestro connect, the systemfor collecting and analysing thedata from SCM technologieswhich, thanks to the constantanalysis of the data being pro-duced by the machines, grants in-stant access to a wide range ofservices such as remote technicalsupport with augmented realityglasses, the purchase of spareparts on-line, predictive mainte-nance and numerous other ser-vices to considerably increase theeffectiveness and efficiency of itsproduction plant.

Stefani Cell E is the entry levelcell in the range, for edgebandingpreviously squared panels. It com-bines the advantages of a cus-tomised production and largevolumes with a compact overalldesign and, above all, with an ac-cessible investment even for SMEs.The multiple configurations avail-able allow for each specific needto be covered in terms of produc-tivity and machining. Feeder,Robot or additional movementscan be combined to offer maxi-mum flexibility and customisation.

In particular, in the RobotLoopversion, the Stefani Cell E is con-figured with the anthropomorphicrobot for a complete automaticmanagement of the panel load-ing/unloading work.l Fast axis high technology inline with future market scenarios.

Type, colour, edge thickness, posi-tion and mortise depth, handlingof the protective film and panel di-mensions: the highly versatileStefani Cell E allows you to contin-ually feed-in and change all theseparameters as part of the pro-duction flow without it beinginterrupted.l Simple, integrated and versa-tile: the multiple configurationsavailable (reloop with robot orreloop with motorised belts) meanall specific needs in terms of pro-duction and machining are met.Feeder, robot or additional move-ments can be combined to offermaximum flexibility.l Whether it be in self-learningmode, with Bar Code/QR code orwith supervisor, “Stefani Cell E” isprogrammed to be set at any levelof logical and physical integration.l New automation to acceleratebusiness: with the new fast, reli-able “pickback bridge system” forthe automatic return of panels, thepanel is automatically rotated tospeed up the next in-feed. It willalso be possible to unload at theend of the cycle in masked timewith the next loop load.l No errors and a guarantee of al-ways feeding in the panels in theright direction, thanks to the SideFinder technology, which showshow to position the panel from adisplay in the operator’s area, sothat it can be correctly machined.

Stefani Cell S is the “all-in-one”square-edging cell designed formid-range investments with the

aid of a single operator to provideclear business advantages fromthe outset, especially companiesfocusing on a semi-intensiveproduction and/or with varyingproduction batches.l Compact and efficient: with asingle operator and a cell of just85 m2 in its basic configuration, itallows for work to be done onparts coming both from the pre-measured and squared nestingcycle and from the sheet cutting, and which therefore require theparallelism/squaring to be reset. This occurs thanks ot the innova-tive semi-automatic feeder devicewith panel squaring that facilitatesand allows for the longitudinaland transversal feeding even oflarge sized panels.l Modular and efficient: StefaniCell S is designed to be easily inte-grated into different operating sit-uations thanks in addition to itsintegration with the new pickbackbridge system that automaticallyunloads the machined panels intoa stack. This brings with it consid-erable advantages in logisticsterms and overall machining timeswith full automation for the returnof the panel as far as the operatorloading area.l Exact and dynamic: the specifictechnical solutions provided guar-antee maximum quality whenmaking the final assembly of allthe furniture parts, even thelargest pieces like the sides andcupboard doors. Repeatability andmachining accuracy become a

safe added value for each compo-nent in the piece of furniture.

Stefani Cell H and Stefani CellH+ offer maximum customisation, high productivity levels and excel-lent machining quality. Stefani CellH and Stefani Cell H+ are the newedgebanding and squaring-edge-banding cells capable of bringingtogether all these advantagesunder one solution. The cells canbe configured with different kindsof panel feeder systems — semi-automatic or fully automatic —and are structured according totechnical solutions, level of invest-ment and efficiency and are de-signed to guarantee bothindustrial level production vol-umes as well as maximum diversi-fication of the production batch.

Stefall Cell H and H+ ensure100% efficient machining of com-ponents for furniture items forevery part of the home (kitchens, living rooms, sleeping areas, bath-rooms, wardrobes and studies)with considerable advantages.l Instant production and finan-cially advantageous both forbatches with single panels as wellas for average standard stacks, without the need to stop produc-tion for a change of format, thick-ness, edge type and gluing qualitythat occur on a regular basis dur-ing a machining shift.l Instant availability, even onmobile devices, of the machininginformation relating to each singlepanel, wherever it is in the cycle, thanks to the continuous trackingprovided by the supervision soft-ware.l Panel flow and movement op-timisation handled and synchro-nised with company network data.

“These new SCM flexible ‘batch1’ edgebanding systems prove ourability to generate sustainable, quality innovation for all com-panies seeking advanced and flex-ible solutions for their productionprocess,” comments Luigi De Vito,SCM division director. “We haveshared the latest technological so-lutions for the industry with clientsand partners right where they takeshape, at the heart of the SCM pro-duction site in Thiene. SOFTWARE FOR DESIGN & MANUFACTURE

STAGE 1: Designing a 20-unit kitchen for a developertook a matter of minutes with Cabinet Vision. Stage2: The material was ordered at 4.55 pm the same day.Stage 3: The following day it was cut, drilled, edged, assembled and delivered by 12.30 pm.

“I did that simply to prove a point,” says PaulKettleborough, managing director and owner of ChrisSharp Cabinets Ltd. “I wanted to know just howquickly we could produce a kitchen. Although we hadto machine multiple panels, our CNC machine wasrunning at up to 80 metres a minute.”

Employing a dozen people at the 15,000 ft2 work-shop and showroom in Lincolnshire, the companygenerally produces two kitchens a week for end-userconsumers, with a number of others for property de-velopers. Having recently invested in Cabinet Visionsoftware to complement the Alphacam package, thecompany has capacity for designing and manufac-turing around 20 a week.

With a long-standing history of making both softwood and hardwoodfurniture, the company decided it needed to diversify, as cheap importsbegan to have an effect on business, and the company moved into thepurely bespoke kitchen market. Three years ago, Paul bought the com-pany from Chris Sharp, having worked there for over 20 years, and de-cided to concentrate just on kitchens.

Alphacam had been the main software for furniture production formany years, and the company continued to use it to design and manu-facture the cabinetry components for its kitchens, which Paul admittedwas not the optimum tool for casework assemblies. “It was taking a longtime to program our three-axis SCM Ergon machine tool.

“We’d have a standard 600 mm base unit with the holes and toolpaths— but if a customer wanted a 550 mm unit, for example, I’d have to takeit down by 50 mm. So in time, my Alphacam program had up to 150 dif-ferent units. And if a kitchen contained 600, 500 and 400 mm units, I’dput them on a separate sheet and nest them through Alphacam, whichwas a long winded process when compared to Cabinet Vision, because it’snot optimised for that type of work.”

So, the natural progression was to invest in Cabinet Vision for carcasework. Design manager James Graves now receives customers’ orders asan ArtiCAD drawing from the external designer, and imports it into Cab-inet Vision. “As I’ve got a library of the 60 or so cabinets that we use reg-ularly, I create the rooms by dragging and dropping the units into theproject, and then editing them. The ArtiCAD file is often just a plan withdimensions on, usually in increments of 50, but with Cabinet Vision’s para-metric capability and the parameters already set up, if I drop a 600 mmunit in and change it to 587 mm, all the relevant sizes and joins are allchanged accordingly. Each one literally takes just seconds, and I can com-plete a full kitchen plan in around 20 minutes.”

Being able to customise each unit is particularly valuable when he isworking with the handle-less cabinets. “We prefer to have these carcase-pressed, so we can choose that the jointing technique is all dowelled ratherthan KD-fitted. However, I can have KD fittings if required and I have fullcontrol over their location and orientation. I can make all fittings on shelves

up to a certain height face down, and the ones above it face up, so whenthe customer looks at it they don’t see where the fixing joints are.”

Cabinet Vision’s powerful communication tool with the CNC nestingmachine, S2M (Screen-To-Machine), sends the NC code to the Ergon, which includes all the cutting and drilling instructions for the machine.

Alphacam comes into play with the handle-less units, notching out theareas on the side of the panels for the profile to fit into, by sending ma-chining code to the Homag Weeke CNC. Paul Kettleborough explains thatoperation can’t be performed on the Ergon. “As it’s notched out, wewouldn’t be able to put the panel through the linear movement on anedge bander … it just wouldn’t accept it. So we put it through as a rec-tangular piece which gets edge banded on one edge, and as it’s neatlynotched out for the profile on the Homag, the edge band stays intact.Alphacam is also used to produce any curved, complex shape and hard-wood doors. All these programs are done solely with it.”

And Alphacam also indirectly drives a Koch machine tool, by workingin tandem with Cabinet Vision. “As the Cabinet Vision files go to Screen-To-Machine it stores the programs in Alphacam, along with the positionof the holes that need to be drilled horizontally. All holes, both on themain faces of the panels and the edges, are designed and placed there byCabinet Vision. I pull up the nested program in Alphacam, and those onthe face are drilled by the Ergon. But I can also get the same file in a dif-ferent format, which gives the hole sequence for that individual panel, and the horizontal holes are drilled on the Koch.”

Concluding, James Graves says another advantage of using CabinetVision is that it means the company can give an accurate price for the job.“All materials and their price are in the system, so I can see at a glancehow much each unit costs, and the price for the whole kitchen, rightdown to the screws. We can come in with a bottom-line figure to staycompetitive. It’s a bespoke kitchen, but not a bespoke price.”Alphacam l Tel 0118 922 6677 l www.alphacam.comCabinet Vision l Tel 0118 922 6644 l www.cabinetvision.com

The issue with desktop softwareis that it is only available on thecomputer where the software isinstalled. However, in this modernday and age users require infor-mation 24/7 on all the devicesthey have. Joinerysoft is proudtherefore to introduce JMS Cloud. At Joinerysoft, the company hasdesigned a private and securestorage area for all your manage-ment information that you can ac-cess remotely via the internet onmany devices. This removes limitsof where and when you can accessyour data, allowing you to bemore flexible, utilise resources bet-ter and provide a better service toyour customers. The key feature ofJMS Cloud is that it links seam-lessly with Joinerysoft’s desktopsoftware, JMSv2 and JMS3D, soyou only need to input data once(even historical data can beimported).

Security of customer data isvital and therefore JMS Cloud usesthe latest web technology, incor-porating a tenanted environmentunique to each customer.

In layman terms, this meansthat customer data is secure andcan never be contaminated orleaked outside of your ownunique area.

AS PART of Hexagon’s philosophyof supporting data-driven Smartfactories, the latest release ofAlphacam CAD/CAM softwarespeeds up how jobs which requireseveral processes are managed.

A new job type has been intro-duced in Alphacam 2020.1. TheMultiple Process Jobs functional-ity makes it simpler to create jobsand orders in Automation Man-ager, which need to be outputtedto more than one machine or re-quire any secondary processing atthe same machine.

“In the past, users had to createmultple jobs to process complexoperations in Automation Man-ager,” says product manager ChipMartin. “But now, a single job can

be created, containing all the dif-ferent machines and manufactur-ing processes that the part goesthrough.”

He highlights an example ofmachining the top and back of apart. In the latest version of thesoftware, those two processes caneasily be worked as a single job.“NC code will simply be created forboth of them automatically, whichis also the case for additionalmachines and other processes.”

This improvement streamlineshow complex manufacturingprocesses are handled in Auto-mation Manager. “Once the pro-cess is defined, and the MultipleProcess Job is created, the opera-tor can easily repeat the same

complex job many times for differ-ent parts. Also, the user interfacewill help show exactly whichprocesses and machines the partwill go through.”

Several enhancements havebeen made to Automation Man-ager’s output file options. Firstly, the new File Name Configurationdialogue creates names from jobinformation, job files, or any cus-tom text. Secondly, a number ofimprovements to Report Creationinclude the ability to generate upto four different layouts, which canalso be printed. All the materialsbeing used can be included in onereport; and a report can be pro-duced for each material and eachnested sheet.

“This fine-tune control meansusers can tailor Automation Man-ager output entirely to their spe-cific requirements.”

The Rough/Finish of solid faceswith Tool Side function now sup-ports cylindrical faces to be ma-chined. Planar and cylindricalfaces can be combined in a singleselection. For solid faces that areperpendicular or undercuts, an ac-tive work plane can be used to de-fine the preferred approach angle(scanning direction).

“In the previous release weintroduced the ability to machinesolid faces directly for rough/finishand sawing,” says Chip Martin.“This has now been enhanced toallow simple planar faces to bemachined without creating newgeometry.”

Cylindrical faces as well asplanar faces can now be selected, and Alphacam automatically findsthe best angle for machiningthem. This calculation is carriedout while keeping a fixed angle forthe tool in a work plane, guaran-teeing that most controllers willbe able to support compensation(G41/G42), and Lead-in/Out gen-erated by Alphacam.

“Before this improvement, usershad to carry out several steps tomachine a selection of faces usingthe tool side. Now, instead of cre-ating workplanes and extractinggeometries, they simply select thefaces for machining, and Alpha-cam calculates the required toolangle and workplane to machinea selection of faces.

“This is a real time saver.”AlphacamTel 0118 922 6677www.alphacam.com

TO SAY THAT Alan Ruddock, worksdirector of Daw Green Contracts Ltd, ispassionate about the woodworkingindustry, would be an understate-ment.

He built his own workshop in a shedwhen he was 14, and had woodwork-ing tools for Christmas as a child, takinghis own full set of tools into his ‘O’ levelwoodworking exam. And he fully ad-mits that if you cut him, he’d bleed saw-dust. “It was just born within me,” hesays. “When I started working in the in-dustry, I couldn’t believe I was gettingpaid to do something I loved so much.”

And now, he’s equally as passionateabout Alphacam software which pro-grams the company’s three-axis SCMRecord 125 router. As well as currentlyusing Alphacam on every project the high-end shopfitting companyworks on, he is also expanding the use of Cabinet Vision, which also drivesthe Record, through its Screen-To-Machine module.

Manufacturing everything from counters to displays, stands, wallpanelling, ceiling features, desks and storage units, anything with acurved shape goes through Alphacam. “We’ve also had Cabinet Vision fora few years, but only recently started to really exploit it for carcases andpure cabinetry components.”

Amongst the prestigious clients: the Trailfinders travel agency chain;Royalty, including Buckingham Palace, Holyrood Palace, Windsor Castleand Clarence House; and the Houses of Parliament.

“Because we only work at the real top end of the market, precision andquality is paramount for us. Our biggest challenge is the complexity ofwhat we do, and with time being one of the major drivers of the indus-try, we are always looking to save time, while still ensuring consistentlyhigh quality, particularly in the process of converting the original draw-ings into NC code for the machine tool. This is where Cabinet Vision isstarting to play an increasingly important role.”

When the company first invested in Cabinet Vision it was part of a pe-riod of considerable change, and the software was underutilised. Now,while Alphacam will continue to program complex components, he saysa lot of the case work is better suited to Cabinet Vision.

“The difference is, once we import our CAD drawings into Alphacamwe have to break down the individual components and redraw them inAlphacam, then insert all the holes and fixings. But Cabinet Vision pro-duces the panels for us from the CAD drawings, and this will save us atremendous amount of time, while reducing the risk of human error. Those drawings show the entire shop, including all the other trades — airconditioning, electrical, and flooring — and we extrapolate the cabinets, and treat them as individuals.”

He says further time savings come from Cabinet Vision’s parametric

function. “Basically we make boxes — a counter with cupboards anddrawers is simply a box with other boxes inside, and as we’ve already in-vested time upfront with building up libraries and construction meth-ods, we simply drag and drop a cabinet into the job, and when we editone length, it automatically changes the other dimensions.

“Sometimes those boxes have complex shaped components, and we’llneed Alphacam to program those toolpaths, but the majority are nowput directly through Cabinet Vision now.”

As well as accuracy and time savings, he says Cabinet Vision offers an-other huge benefit for the workshop: labelling. As well as the softwareproducing drawings showing all the panels coming off the router,Label-IT enables the operator to clearly visualise the panels, print labelsat the machine, and then simply place them on the parts as they arenested out.

The screen is updated automatically to show which parts and panelshave been completed. Information on the labels includes the client name, job number, description and edge banding details.

“This is particularly important for the shopfloor to take a pallet of partsand know which ones need to go to the edge bander, or directly to thebench for assembly as a finished counter or desk. It’s like putting a jig-saw puzzle together with the box lid picture, as opposed to doing it with-out the lid.”

In conclusion, Alan Ruddock says Alphacam has been valuable and in-tegral to the company’s processes for many years, and Cabinet Vision isset to become of equal importance as the company fully implements it.“The software turns designs into reality for our high-end customers. With-out it, our production would simply stop.”Alphacam l Tel 0118 922 6677 l www.alphacam.com

SOFTWARE FOR DESIGN & MANUFACTURE

THE LATEST VERSION of the Cabinet Vision design-to-manufacturingsolution for woodworkers delivers greater control and flexibility forthe machining of part connections, empowering users to betterautomate and manage every aspect of production.

Released by the Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence Production Soft-ware business, Cabinet Vision Version 12 features an all-new connectionmanager that delivers complete control over the machining that occurswhere two parts meet by enabling users to easily define and automatethose connections.

For instance, if a dado with pre-drills or fixed position-dowels with RTAfittings are needed, the connection manager provides the tools neededto define those specific operations, and many more.

“When developing Cabinet Vision Version 12, we were focused on giv-ing our users more control over how their cabinets are constructed,” saidCabinet Vision product manager, Chip Martin. “The new connection ma-chining in Version 12 is a game-changer for automating how our cus-tomers connect their parts together, whether for cabinets or closets.”

This latest versionalso features a com-pletely redesignedCabinet Vision Assem-bly Manager, whcih isutilised by engineersto specify construc-tion methods andstandardise the pro-duction of their prod-ucts. In Version 12, theassembly manager of-fers increased flexibil-ity, including theability to select con-nections per part, andan enhanced, user-friendly interface.

The new connec-tion manager, alongwith the ability to as-sign connections inthe Cabinet Vision as-sembly manager, de-livers what is believedto be unparalleledflexibility for defining

and automating con-struction methods. The development of-fers greater controlover every aspect ofconnection machin-ing while maintainingboth ease of use andpart quality.

Improved ease ofuse in Cabinet VisionVersion 12 includesthe simplification ofdefining part differ-ences based uponcabinet class “break-outs” — such as base, upper, tail, and others. While these breakoutshave been a signifi-cant feature since thesoftware’s inception,it required that theuser define breakoutsfor all questionsabout the part. En-hanced in Version 12,

breakouts can now be limited to a specific question for the part, signifi-cantly reducing the complexity of defining construction methods.

Among this latest version’s interface enhancements is the option todisplay all contextual, or right-click, menus as radial menus. Radial menusoffer a number of key advantages — most notably speed and ease of use.

An additional upgrade to ease of use and efficiency offered with Cab-inet Vision Version 12 is the all-new ability to view and move to differentrooms while working in elevation view. The room selection option beingaccessible via the elevation view significantly reduces the number ofmouse clicks required to work through a multi-room project. Prior to Ver-sion 12, users were required to exit the system’s elevation view and enterplan view to move to a different room. Cabinet Vision Version 12 offers adirect link to the Leica Geosystems 3D DISTO™ measurement tool, whichaccurately captures 3D coordinates with the precision needed for projectplanning. Designed to eliminate unwelcome surprises due to measure-ment inaccuracies, this direct link with Cabinet Vision enables users todrive the layout of jobs directly on the job site.Cabinet Vision l Tel 0118 922 6644 l www.cabinetvision.com

Creative uses of SterlingOSB ZeroTHE BOX, located at FarGo Vil-lage in Coventry (right), has un-dergone several phases ofregeneration to create what isclaimed to be the perfect per-forming arts venue with Nor-bord’s SterlingOSB Zero at itscore.

The creative hub started life asa carpet warehouse in part of anindustrial estate, before beingturned into a gallery and latertransformed into a performingarts facility. BPN Architects speci-fied SterlingOSB Zero for the pro-ject as it would give the venuecharacter while principally con-taining noise and offering a strongsurface for objects or artwork tobe attached to.

The Box, aptly named as it hasessentially been built as a boxwithin a box, houses a 500-personcapacity multi-purpose perform-ance facility, a foyer with a mezza-nine level, meeting rooms and abreakout space — all of whichfeature SterlingOSB Zero.

Larry Priest, a partner at BPNArchitects, commented, “It is anengineered board that gives theinterior a really nice orange qual-ity; it’s sustainable, decorative, hasa low surface spread of flame andworked acoustically.”

The SterlingOSB Zero panelswere fitted together in what AdamMottershead, acoustic advisor to

FarGo Village, describes as an “OSBsandwich”. An 18 mm panel ofSterlingOSB Zero OSB 3 Tongue &Groove provided the thick outerlayer while a 15 mm panel of Ster-lingOSB Zero OSB 3 was used forthe inner layer. A 12.5 mm thickplasterboard filling was fitted inbetween the two panels to createthe “OSB sandwich”. Mr Motters -

head continued, “The SterlingOSBZero sandwich is a cost-effectiveway to squeeze as much acousticperformance as possible out ofthe construction of both the ceil-ing and walls.”

BPN Architects, the design teamand contractor agreed that Nor-bord’s SterlingOSB Zero was a dy-namic solution which enabled

them to create a special perform-ing arts place.l Luke O’Neil, contractor atBlandford-based Dorset Wood-works, used SterlingOSB Zero in abarn conversion to create a won-derful interior space (left). Theconverted area now features amezzanine storey which leads tothe lower level of the barn via astaircase.

SterlingOSB Zero has been fea-tured throughout the conversion;it has been used on every studwall to add strength and stabilitywhich will be invaluable in thenext stage of the project whereplasterboard, kitchen cabinetryand electricals will all be fitted. Thepanels were easily cut to meet thedesign requests of the clientwhich included lining staircasesand creating in a timber framestructure.

Luke commented, “I used Ster-lingOSB Zero in this barn conver-sion as it gives some stability tothe stud work and enabled myclient to make a considerable sav-ing compared to using similarboards, like plywood.

“I always use SterlingOSB Zerowhere I can as it is strong and aes-thetically-pleasing when used asthe finished product.”NorbordTel 01786 812921www.norbord.co.uk

“The best investment we have made”A MANUFACTURING company in Stafford-shire has purchased a wood waste heaterfrom Wood Waste Technology to savemoney on its operating costs.

Stoke Fire Doors Ltd offers a complete rangeof fire door services, including manufacture, supply and fit BM TRADA accredited internalfire doors, fire exit doors, fire rated doors, tim-ber fire doorsets and glazed fire doors.

The company operates from a 10,000 ft2

unit in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, although withits mezzanine floor and roof height the vol-ume of space is probably more like 18,000 ft2.The existing mains gas heating was provingexpensive to run, costing between £6,000-£7,000 per year, and the company was hiringskips each week to take away manufacturingwaste, so the management team decided toinvest in a new wood waste heater.

Director of Stoke Fire Doors, Mark Danielslooked on the internet for recommendationsand discovered Wood Waste Technology, based in Stafford just down the road fromthem, came highly recommended for itsBritish-made wood waste heaters.

Mark was impressed with the range of heatersmanufactured by Wood Waste Technology andespecially liked the ability to add a summer heatdump, to allow waste wood to continue to beburnt throughout the hotter months, by send-ing the heat direct to atmosphere.

After a quote and site survey, Stoke FireDoors ordered a WT15 heater, which was in-stalled by Wood Waste Technology’s experi-

enced engineers into a dedicated unit outsidewith the heat piped into the main building.

Mark says: “This is by far the best invest-ment we have made in our business to date! The team at Wood Waste Technology is ex-tremely knowledgeable, providing us withmuch needed guidance and advice. Our unitis placed near a residential estate, but be-cause Wood Waste Technology is a CarbonTrust Accredited Supplier, they checked outthat there would be no problem having onefitted. We have definitely made the right de-cision for our business buying the WT15. It isgreat that we can burn all our waste woodand other suitable rubbish, so need to sendless waste to landfill. Our waste disposal billshave reduced tremendously, saving usaround £5,500 a year, plus we no longer haveany heating costs. Would highly recommendthat any wood-related manufacturing busi-nesses investigate the benefits of investingin a wood waste heater.”

Managing director of Wood Waste Tech-nology, Kurt Cockroft, says: “We are de-lighted to have helped Stoke Fire Doors savemoney on heating and waste disposal. STAIRS: DESIGN & MANUFACTURE

MASTERWOOD has over 130 customersin the UK and Ireland who are using oneof their stair software packages withtheir Masterwood CNC machines. Thisclient base has grown over the past 22years, and keeps on growing.

Here are just a handful of Masterwood’scustomers to show the variations in thecompanies, their requirements and theirCNC machines.

The first staircase software package wasdesigned in 1996 to run with CNC machin-ing centres. The first customer in the UK wasSandiford, Son & Bannister.

Once the new Masterwood Teknomat4000 and stair software was installed fulltraining was provided and the whole stairproduction procedure changed for thecompany. Now the company has a newstate of the art factory in Caterham and theTeknomat is still in use alongside a Project500L with automatic bed positioning thatwas added in 2009. The picture shows theoriginal Teknomat from 1997.

Stairways was an early customer forMasterwood, installing two CNC machinesat its Cannock factory for stair and door setproduction in the late 1990s. The companyhas continued to grow and now has a rangeof Masterwood CNCs operating at its three UK based factories. Five new Masterwood CNCmachines have been installed over the last two years to help speed up production.Managing director, Neil Stevens, says “this will help us maintain our 250 plus stairs per week”.

Stairways used the original Masterwood Stair software and moved over to the currentMasterwood/StairBiz package in 2012 to help run the whole stair business.

The latest customer to join the Masterwood stair group, Swan Joinery, is a bespoke join-ery company based in Guernsey, which has taken delivery of a Masterwood Project 470L andhas already had the Masterwood Stair package set up. “This is going to make a massivechange to our business and production ability,” said owner Keith Quartier.

Company owner of RMJM Joinery, Robert Morris, used the MasterStair software in an-other joinery firm before setting up his own company. In 2016 the company got hold of a sec-ond hand Masterwood Project 330 T. This enabled them to increase production and thenmove to bigger premises in 2017. Production has increased further at the new works and al-lowed Robert to add another second hand Masterwood CNC plus upgrade to the currentMasterwood/StairBiz stair software. The pictured Project 330T is now over 22 years old andhas been producing around 25 staircases per week. Not bad for an olden.

Another of Masterwood’s bespoke customers, producing a wide variety of staircases for itscustomers, is Shaw Stairs. Owner Chris Shaw put the Masterwood Winner 3.2 into his factoryback in 2002 along with the MasterStair software and the “company has never looked back,it has made our production so much easier, especially on difficult designs,” said Chris.

This is just a small mixture of Masterwood customers producing stairs with the company’ssoftware and CNC machines, a complete package which has been going for over 20 years.

Masterwood looks forward to more companiesjoining as it continues to develop the software sidewith its connection with StairBiz and also to developmachines that can help speed up production, and insome cases automation can be added.Masterwood GBwww.masterwood.com
