. We Walk by Faith We walk by faith, and not by sight: No gracious words we hear Of him who spoke as none e'er spoke, But we believe him near. We may not touch his hands and side, Nor follow where he trod; Yet in his promise we rejoice, And cry 'My Lord and God!' Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, And may our faith abound; To call on you when you are near, And seek where you are found: That when our life of faith is done In realms of clearer light We may behold you as you are In full and endless sight. We walk by faith, and not by sight: No gracious words we hear Of him who spoke as none e'er spoke, But we believe him near. Text: Henry Alford, 1810-1871, alt.

Fly like a Bird Ken Canedo

Fly like a bird to the Lord, my soul.

I want to soar like an eagle.

Though I may journey far away from home,

I know I’ll never be alone.

1. O God, you know who I am.

You know my hopes and my dreams.

In my pondering and fears,

In my joy and in my tears,

O God, your presence is real.

2. Where can I run from your love?

Where can I hide from my God?

From the dawn of morning’s light

to the darkness of the night.

O God, your presence is real.

3. When I am down and afraid,

when I am falling away,

you extend a gentle hand,

and I know you understand.

O God, your presence is real. Text: Based on Psalm 139:1–4, 7–12, 23–24. Text and music © 1995,

Holy God, we praise thy name;

Lord of all, we bow before thee!

All on earth thy scepter claim,

All in heav’n above adore thee;

Infinite, thy vast domain,

Everlasting is thy reign.

Infinite, thy vast domain,

Everlasting is thy reign.

Hark! the loud celestial hymn

Angel choirs above are raising;

Cherubim and Seraphim,

In unceasing chorus praising;

Fill the heav’ns with sweet accord:

“Holy, holy, holy Lord!”

Fill the heav’ns with sweet accord:

“Holy, holy, holy Lord!”

Look Beyond

Look beyond the bread you eat; See your Savior and your Lord. Look beyond the cup you drink; See his love poured out as blood. 1. Give us a sign that we might believe in you. Moses had manna from the sky. 2. I am the bread which from the heavens came; Those who eat this bread will never die. 3. The bread I give you will be my very flesh; My blood will truly be your drink. Responsorial Psalm Ps 86:5–6, 9–10, 15–16

R. (5a) Lord, you are good and forgiving. You, O L , are good and forgiving, abounding in kindness to all who call upon you. Hearken, O L , to my prayer and attend to the sound of my pleading. R. Lord, you are good and forgiving. All the nations you have made shall come and worship you, O L , and glorify your name. For you are great, and you do wondrous deeds; you alone are God. R. Lord, you are good and forgiving. You, O L , are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity. Turn toward me, and have pity on me; give your strength to your servant. R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

Reading 1

Wis 12:13, 16–19

There is no god besides you who have the care of all, that you need show you have not unjustly condemned. For your might is the source of justice; your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all. For you show your might when the perfection of your power is disbelieved; and in those who know you, you rebuke temerity. But though you are master of might, you judge with clemency, and with much lenience you govern us; for power, whenever you will, attends you. And you taught your people, by these deeds, that those who are just must be kind; and you gave your children good ground for hope that you would permit repentance for their sins.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Times July 19, 2020

Reading 2

Rom 8:26–27

Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will.

Gospel

Mt 13:24–43 or Mt 13:24–30

In the shorter form of the reading, the passages in brackets are omitted.

Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ”

[ He proposed another parable to them. “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’ ”

He spoke to them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.”

All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through the prophet:

I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.

Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, “Explain to us the par-able of the weeds in the field.” He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear.” ]

Salmo Responsorial

Sal 85, 5–6. 9–10. 15–16a

Prayer For Protection in Time of Pandemic O Mary, you always brighten our path

as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,

Who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining steadfast in faith.

O loving Mother, you know what we need, And we are confident you will provide for us

As at Cana in Galilee. Intercede for us with your Son Jesus,

the Divine Physician, for those who have fallen ill, For those who are vulnerable, And for those who have died.

Intercede also for those charged with Protecting the health and safety of others And for those who are tending to the sick

And seeking a cure. Help us, O Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus,

who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross,

to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God.

In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always from all dangers,

O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen

GOOD SEEDS

Today Jesus continues to speak to his followers using parables. What a rich treasure we are given today in three parables about the kingdom of heaven! The kingdom is likened to a man sowing good seed in his field, a mustard seed, and yeast mixed with flour. As they did last week, today the disciples press Jesus for an interpretation of one of the parables—the parable of the man sowing good seed. Lest we think that these parables are simply amus-ing little anecdotes, Jesus’ interpretation should be seen for what it is—a warning. Wailing and grinding of teeth in a fiery furnace await those who are children of the evil one. This parable points to the struggle for today’s believer. Sometimes, through sin, we sow weeds and prevent the love of Christ from blossoming. Let today’s Gospel help put us back on track. Let us recommit ourselves to prepar-ing for the last days, the harvest, by blossoming as the good seeds we were created in love to be.
