Dear Saint Edward Parish Family: Ahh, “Back to School.” Growing up, I was a good student, but I always HATED those words and that time of year. It USED to be that we knew that a new school year was upon us because we would watch the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day telethon during Labor Day weekend, and then back to school on Tuesday. Well, school schedules changed over the years and the new school year started before Labor Day. Eventually the telethon came to an end, so there went that, too. Now it seems that school just “starts” whenever the powers that be determine. So every year I find myself asking kids, “When does school start?” One of the wonderful things in life is watching young people grow up. Watching them learn. Watching them mature intellectually and spiritually. Watching them “become” adults. If only we could really, REALLY appreciate those years during the time we’re living them, because they’re years we’ll never get back again - and a time in our lives the aura of which will never be able to recover. Years ago there was a program on TV called “The Wonder Years.” The title was quite apt, for those truly were and al-ways will be years of wonder. Don’t you find that when there are young people in church - kids of whatever age - that it just feels “better?” Seeing those young faces gives us hope for the future, and lets us perhaps wax a little nostalgic about our own childhoods and the adventures and misadventures we had growing up, and the people who were in our lives then, some of whom remain now, and others who belong only to our past. As we begin another school year, let’s lift up our children in prayer. They face different kinds of challenges than we did. In some ways their lives may be easier than were ours, but in other ways, the challenges they face are much, much more difficult. And may we also remember that when we’re young, our feelings are hurt much more easily because we’re very vulnerable to what others think and feel. We don’t have to hand out gold stars for going to the bathroom, or give everybody an “A” just for trying, but lets always, ALWAYS remember to encourage and support our young people in any way that we can. They need it, and they deserve it - and it can make all the difference in
the world for them.
May God Bless & Keep You Always! Fr. Rick

East and West Window Project Malachitament, lived about four hundred years before Christ. He speaks of a time when God will be worshipped throughout the world by every race, a time when sacrifice will be made to Him everywhere and by all peoples. This sacrifice will be a “perfect” oblation, unlike those
offered by the priests in Jerusalem. “For from the rising of the sun even to the going down, my name is
great among the Gentiles, and in every place there is sacrifice, and there is offered to my name a clean oblation: for my name is great
among the Gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts.” (Malachi 1:11) The prophecy of Malachi is fulfilled in the sacrifice of holy Mass. Here we have a true sacrifice; the object is the purest possible – the Son of God, and the Offeror, the Savior through the hands of the priest. It is,
moreover, offered in all places throughout the world. Thus, in Eucharistic Prayer number three we find a palpable echo of Malachi’s
prophecy. The prayer reads, in part: “You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly gives you
praise, for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and work-ing of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and
you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of
the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.”

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. Hello Dear Friends! I wanted to give you a quick parish Synod update. Last week members of the parish Synod team, including those who have volunteered to help head some of our Synod goals, met with Bishop Hying to review our parish goals. To be honest, I was a little intimidated. The Bishop was going to sit down and talk with us specifically about our goals for St. Edward. What was he going to say? Were they achievable? Were they useful? Were they in line with the goals of the diocese? The St. Ed’s team met with our brothers and sisters at Holy Name in Cedar Lake. The bishop led us in prayer, reminding us that we were called to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28: 19). He then met with each parish individually. While he was meeting with Holy Name, our team gathered and talked about what we were excited about when it came to our goals. Most everyone around the table said that they were excited we were trying something new to help the people of St. Edward fall deeper in love with Christ. We are going to take a chance and reach out to others. We were excited that we are going to try new things to build a deeper and richer community between all who call St. Edward home. When the bishop sat down with us, he affirmed that our goals are achievable and are the work of the Holy Spirit. He reviewed every single goal with us and we were able to share a bit of background about our parish and town (and invited him to the Labor Day Parade). He was very positive and encouraging! When we gathered back together with Holy Name, we closed with final thoughts and a prayer. Before we left, Bishop Hying commented how amazing it would be if every Catholic in our parish said yes to at least one part of the Synod plan. We can’t do it all ourselves, but we all can do something. What gifts are you, dear reader, willing to share?
Peace and all goodness, Vicky Hathaway

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time—19 August 2018 - Unless you eat, unless you drink… Saint John gets to the heart of the five-week Bread of Life discourse. He gives us the intimate words of Jesus Christ that we proclaim in the heart of every Eucharistic Prayer. Eat. Drink. Do this in memory. Until I come again.
Why do I come to Sunday Mass?
Why do I join the Communion procession each Sunday?
How does this action keep me centered on Jesus Christ until he comes?
