PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITIONS 1985
James and Daniel Abrahams’ 1978 by Judy Goldhill
A BRITISH PORTRAIT: JUDY GOLDHILLPhotographs of the Anglo-Jewish Community
28 A P R IL - 19 M AY
Judy Goldhill needs no introduction as a photographer. This exhibition, which was shown in New York at the Jewish Museum, is evidence enough of her outstanding ability.
PICTURES OF AN ERA MAURICE ANTONY1 M A Y - 19 M AY (1 8 8 3 - 1 9 6 3 )This is the first exhibition in this country of Maurice Antony’s work, and will show a group of photographs of James Ensor, born 125 years ago. There are also photographs of pre-1914 Ypres, wartime shots which were used by the International Press, and studies of the fisher- folk of Ostend. These photographs are of great historical interest, and have a freshness, vitality and experimental quality which places him among the foremost photographers of his time.
FLOWER SERIES CAY LANG23 M AY - 12 JU N E
Cay Lang is well-known in her native California. She is one of a number of the younger artists who use ‘Image as Meaning’.
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITIONS 1985
'Two Children’ by Derek Brooke-Wavell
INSIDE CHINA DEREK BROOKE-WAVELL23 M AY - 12 JU N E
Derek Brooke-Wavell writes that: — “For the British, China has been seen as the land of the exotic - slant eyes and pagodas, and, more recently, a particularly visionary form of Communism. These things are bound to attract the photographer - but equally interesting is the ordinary Chinese person, living his life in what may seem to him to be a very humdrum way, yet this is a totally different world from our own.”
CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY ZHONG MING23 M A Y - 12.JUNE
It is unusual for the British to have an opportunity of seeing the work of an artist who is a citizen of the People’s Republic of China and a Member of the Chinese Association of Artists in Beijing. Calligraphy is only one aspect of this artist’s work - he has shown his paintings in China, Japan and Sweden. This will be his first major exhibition in London. During the exhibition, there will be a number of calligraphic workshops.

Unfortunately it seems to me that in our western society today the a rtist is too much divorced from everyday life. A rt is too often something only to be seen in galleries and exhibitions; a luxury or a status symbol but not fo r the general public. This is both the fau lt of the a rtist himself, who tends too often to keep himself apart, and o f the general pub lic who value their surroundings fo r the most part normally fo r physical com fort and the objects they use fo r the ir usefulness. It is sad that plaster flying ducks on a wall are so often the expression o f the ir a rtistic taste. This is not an age that values the artist fo r his contribution to society and alas, the artist as a result opts out of society.
In earlier days the leisured classes had tim e and money to develop the ir artistic sensibilities and fe lt the need and had the education to make beautiful their homes and places o f worship. Today th is leisured class has practically disappeared and corporations w ith a notable few exceptions, both private and public, either see no need or are afraid to spend money on making their surroundings anything but functional. It is, therefore, all the more im portant that artists should not be afraid to take the ir wares to the market place and this is w hat the Hampstead A rtis ts ' Council has so successfully done in the past 27 years. It is right tha t artists themselves should put the ir own w ork before the ir public as an expression o f their own wish to be considered part o f the main stream of life. It enables the public to make its own judgem ent of the w o rk of artists, knowing tha t they are not being promoted fo r any particular reason by any particular gallery or group. For this reason it is more interesting and exciting to buy at such an exhibition as I have done often in the past and hope to do in the future. Unless industry takes on the patronage of the arts, which in form er days was so successfully done by the aristocracy, then our life in general w ill suffer from the w ithering o f artistic talent. A gallery such as th is does, therefore, provide industrialists w ith the opportun ity o f helping young artists at the start o f the ir career w itho u t risking large sums of money.
This kind o f patronage is also w ith in the pockets o f the general public, who one hopes can be persuaded that art is not something apart but should be an integral part of their lives. It should also encourage artists to w ant to be a greater influence by being w illing to interest themselves more than some do at present in every-day life. A rtis ts have a responsibility to help us all to improve the quality o f our surroundings and w e have a responsibility to encourage them to do so.

JACK YATES
Jack Yates is one o f the original outsiders looking in. He loves best that which in some way excludes him. He could never be a hippy, a jet-setter or one o f the so-called Beautiful People. Nor find much in common w ith the glossy super-race of modern media.Yet they all fascinate him. And exclude him w ith a feeling sim ilar to that o f the immigrant who can more easily adopt a new nationality than find a sense o f belonging. In some ways a foreigner in his own country. Jack Yates brings to his art the clarity and precision o f a foreigner's observation. The w orld o f his w ork is that same w orld we clamber through in daily myopia. If you prefer fantasy or some other form of escapism, try somebody else.
Yates is very much an a rtist of our time.peter cundall
