Steve Daggitt is an Oxford artist who paints the architecture, people and streets of Oxford. The well-known buildings and sights of the city appear in his work but so do out-of-the way spots and residential streets. “The city of Oxford is an endless source of inspiration,” he explains. “So many things come together to create a special atmosphere: the range of architectural styles from medieval to modern; the population mix of permanent residents, students and tourists, the combination of strong cultural, commercial and industrial sectors and the green spaces in the heart of the city.

In each drawing Steve aims to convey the sense of excitement and dynamism that these things give to the city, whether the ow of a crowd in the street, the seemingly chaotic movement at a junction, gures dissolved in the light of a midday sun or low winter light glowing on the upper stories of buildings. He records the essence of a scene in fast drawings, black and white, that take between ten minutes and half an hour. In this way he records the strongest forms and the movement and light of the scene, taking photographs for additional information about colour and detail, and returning to the same spot at different times of day and in different weathers. Back in the studio he then develops these into more nished works in oil, acrylic and other media.

Katherine Shock is another Oxford artist who has painted many of the city’s sights, recently offering a visual tribute to the city with a series of pictures to illustrate a sequence of poems by award-winning poet John Elinger, the nom

Oxford Preservation Trust set up in 1927 to protect the views of Oxford and its striking skyline, painted by Turner and many other famous artists. Today the architecture and the vibrancy of the city continue to inspire artists and so, to celebrate the city for both ‘town’ and ‘gown’, new views of old views have been painted by a variety of artists from near and far all competing to win the new Oxford Art Prize.

de plume of Sir Christopher Ball, sometime Warden of Keble College. These were presented in a book That Sweet City, a phrase coined by Oxford’s Victorian poet Matthew Arnold. Designed in the form of seven walks across and around Oxford, and radiating out into the surrounding countryside, the book maps Katherine’s travels as she sketched the buildings and landscapes, both famous and less well-known, that have witnessed and shaped the city’s history.

Katherine describes the pleasure of discovering spots around Oxford in which to capture its immensely beautiful cityscape, odd corners crammed with character or characters and the gentle light on its mellow stonework. ‘But perhaps above all,’ she continues, ‘I most enjoy the people passing and stopping to watch me draw and have a chat. It is one of those few times in life when the great barriers of reserve simply disappear and everyone feels comfortable to pause and talk. Bring seen with the early stages of a painting could embarrass me but the enjoyment of sharing my pleasure with so many varied people overrides it.’

Over the years spent painting outside, she thinks that nothing works as well as time spent in the fresh air contemplating a subject. ‘That’s when I notice elements that simply would not have occurred to me from painting a photo’ she explains, and ‘I nd that even being aware of the changing light, the temperature or the breeze when it isn’t too erce, helps add vitality to the painting.

And as you look up and look down, or glimpse something through a doorways,

In June, artists fl ocked to the city with their stools and sketchpads, palettes and easels to capture en-plein-air what they saw. Two months later, they are returning the pictures that resulted from their days on location to hang in an exhibition in Oxford’s Town Hall and the O3 Gallery in the historic Oxford Castle Quarter.

that’s when you discover new angles on what you see, the present and the past too.

One of the poems in That Sweet City describes the War Memorial Garden in Christ Church, laid out in 1926 to commemorate college members who fell in the First World War, just one layer of history in the grounds of the college traditionally considered the most aristocratic of all those in the university, which once housed the parliament of King Charles I during the English Civil War. And it was here that Lewis Carroll rst espied Alice Liddell, the namesake of Alice in Wonderland, and here that he wrote the classic children’s story, published 150 years ago, beneath the Cheshire cat tree.

Take a journey to the O3 Gallery in Oxford Castle Quarter with its Norman Tower, ancient crypts and chequered history as a gaol, and to Oxford’s grand Town Hall with its dancehall, panelling, replaces and chandeliers, to be look again at a city you thought you knew, and be delighted by fresh and interesting perspectives.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 29th August until Sunday 13th September. For further details see www.oxfordartprize.co.uk. And on that last weekend you’ll also have a chance to inside scores of interesting spaces within the city that are usually closed to the public for Oxford Open Doors (www.oxfordopendoors.org.uk).

through industrial areas, cityscape to seaside, and from the earliest of civilisation until the present day, and shows this with her representations of London Bridge and Abingdon Bridge once an important river crossing. On this major thoroughfare and trade route, now a modest waterway largely given over to leisure activities. Yumiko Reynolds has created townscapes of Abingdon, and St Helen’s Wharf, while Julia Straiton’s view of today’s tranquil river and the weathered structures along it includes a World War II pillbox, a glimpse of another chapter in the Thames’ past.‘And the backdrop of the Thames changes constantly’, continues artist Gill Banks. ‘Clutches of ever larger cranes give rise to ever more buildings, in the lower reaches in particular, and how the new arrivals, some amazing, some frightful, have to jostle for attention with the old familiar landmarks.

‘I’m intrigued by the juxtaposition of industry and wild life on the waterway,’ remarks fellow artist Shireen Bricknell, ‘how they sit side by side comfortably going about their business without seeking to encroach on each other. It’s mostly in harmony!’ and she shows the dunlin, a small wading bird, and the water vole using paint and stitch into linen and silk, working directly from sketches drawn at the riverside. ‘The variety of wildlife now visible along the Thames is the result of concerted efforts to

make the river cleaner’ adds Mary Brodrick who is also inspired by the riverside.Walking the Thames towpath locally through the four seasons of the year, has inspired the textile art of Caroline Benge who captures glimpses of nature beside the river like ‘little jewels’. ‘A favourite walk of mine is along the River Thames at Lower Radley,’ adds Abingdon artist Ticia Lever. ‘I am always fascinated by the majestic sweep and power of the river here and also the peace and beauty of the surrounding landscape. The colour of the water reflects the changing light and the skies above and it is the altering colours and moods of the Thames that has inspired this body of work’

Ticia captures the different aspects and mystery of the River Thames, so her piece ‘Swirling Waters’ in blues and purples was created from thick curly wool that conveys the power and dynamic force of the torrents of the River Thames, and contrasts with both ‘Green Depths’ that illustrates the sweep of the water’s current on a sunny day and the possibility of teeming life beneath, and the delicate ‘Golden fish’, who swim on background waters of thread and beads. Ticia has also created bowls from fabric, where the threads, beads and hand-stitching suggest the motion of water with glints of light, and the blues swirls of the water and as the river reflects the sky on a clear winter’s day, harnessing the cool peace and rhythm of the River Thames.

The River Thames, the longest river to weave its way from source to sea entirely within England, flows through Oxfordshire and Berkshire to west London where it becomes tidal, through Oxford, Abingdon, Wallingford, Henley, Reading and Windsor. Changing slowly over time, the river played its part in the development of the people in the Thames Valley, and steeped in their traditions, is at the heart of their heritage and the history of England. Monarchs including Henry VIII used it to travel between the palaces that line the Thames: Windsor Castle, Hampton Court Westminster Palace and the Tower of London too, and it has hosted Royal Pageants for centuries.Swan Upping is another ceremonial activity that takes place only on the Thames, during which swans, traditionally owned by the monarch, are rounded up annually to be counted, a tradition dating from the twelfth century and formalised with a Royal Charter by Edward IV in 1482.It is no wonder, therefore that in 2012, Abingdon chose to revert to its former name, Abingdon-on-Thames, formalising, like Dorchester-on-Thames and Henley-on-Thames, the importance of the river to the town through the ages: a thousand years ago, for example, a cutting was made by Benedictine monks to provide a waterway to the old abbey from the position where Abingdon lock stands today.Captivated by the idea that the Thames is ‘liquid history’, that the tales of time are carried on its tide and that the river presents an ever changing, sometimes unexpected but always intriguing picture; Haptic Art, a group of nine ‘stitched textile’ artists are gathering the waters of the Thames from beneath Abingdon’s iconic bridge, in a variety of fabric formats including sketching with stitches and collage, to flood Abingdon county hall and museum with the threads of their ideas and creative talent.

The Thames in Textiles

Words by Esther Lafferty, Festival Director of Oxfordshire Artweeks

The word ‘Haptic’ comes from the Greek ‘haptikos’ relating to the sense of touch. For all these textile and mixed media artists the physical feel of a creation is an important element of their art. However, each is inspired by the Thames in a different way and the variety on show reflects, like ever changing views on the surface of the water, their individual journeys as they each approach the Thames from different perspective, whether rooted in the natural or the social worlds through which it glides. Jane O’Brien is an Oxford artist who, with a background in interior design, finds much of her inspiration in textiles themselves and the messages that they convey through their construction, colours and the patterns within them. She uses fabrics and thread to create a visual response about social culture and the world around us. For this exhibition, because of the importance of the Thames as a source of livelihood down the centuries which made London a world famous port and trade centre, Jane has chosen the theme of tea to illustrate just one of these trades. The British population are one of the world’s thirstiest tea-drinking nations so the arrival of tea on the Thames was very important. It first arrived at the docks with the English East India Company in the Seventeenth Century. In the 1860’s new fast clipper ships were built to race the tea to London. These included the famous Cutty Sark, now in its resting place alongside the Thames at Greenwich World Heritage Site. It wasn’t until 1953, however, that Tetley’s put tea into teabags, and now Jane’s Thames tea creations in Abingdon Museum represent that journey from a London of yesteryear to afternoon tea in Oxford today while her ‘curiosity boxes’ tell tales of the tidal strength of the river, its history, ships and bridges.Sue Crook has considered the landscape and the way it changes, from rural idylls,

The eighteenth and nineteenth century

saw a huge expansion in the use of and

demand for natural dyes in parallel with the

considerable technological developments

in the textile industry. In response synthetic

processes were developed, producing dyes

far more permanent than ‘fugitive’ dyes from

flowers and plants that fade in the light.

Over in Wytham Woods, an area of ancient

semi-natural woodland to the west of Oxford,

which is used for environmental research and

can be enjoyed by all of us, you’ll find an

exceptionally rich flora and fauna including

a variety of habitats including ancient semi-

natural woodland and a variety of ponds and

800 species of butterflies and moths!

Here, harking back to the earliest inks,

you’ll find artists Robin Wilson and Rosie

Cholmeley-Fairfax in their woodland studio

making their own ink from oak galls. These

grow when a gall wasp lays its eggs onto the

punctured underside of an oak leaf. As the

larva develops, the tree secretes gallic and

tannic acids, creating the oak gall, a spherical

shape clearly distinct from acorns. The oak

galls are dried and then crushed with a pestle

and mortar, soaked in water and strained –

then a dash of a ferrous sulphate is added

to create a permanent ink. Ink made this way

has been found, possibly as early as 588BCE,

in a series of letters written in Ancient Hebrew

on clay ostraca and discovered in 1935 in

Lachish, a city dating back to ancient Judah,

seventeen of which are currently in the British

Museum, although the use of ferrous sulphate

was used in the manufacture inks became far

more commonplace in the middle ages.

Flowers and trees have long provided

and you’ll find the magic of the cricket green

and the village fete, the gardening show,

and England’s green and pleasant land all

depicted in today’s art.

And as summer blooms, look out for art in

gardens whether nature’s own as seen at the

Blenheim’s Annual Flower; sculpture which,

says Garford sculptor Beatrice Hoffman,

‘can enhance a garden and give emphasis to

design and plantings throughout the year.’; or

‘pop-up exhibitions’ at Open Gardens events

– in Berrick Salome on 20th and 21st June,

for example, discover an art-in-the-garden

trail leading to St Helen’s, a quirky church

that’s interesting architecturally and hosting

Mary Moser Award Winner 2016Introducing Caroline Chappell

Caroline trained as a potter originally, a craft where she literally took the land in her hand, digging the clay out and creating with earth itself. Interested in the landscape and the way human generations have left their mark upon it, she enrolled on an Oxford University course ‘Walking the Past’, a fascinating introduction into our local landscape, and Oxfordshire’s hill forts, henges and standing stones.

Now, working in the heart of a con-temporary home/studio/gallery that she designed herself, and using paints that include a pigment ground from Oxfordshire stone, Caroline records the intangible ‘sense of place’ that springs from the prehistoric land beneath our feet, inspired by the ancient landscapes and the hidden traces of our past.‘The surface of the land provides the clues to what has gone before,’ Caroline explains. ‘You can see, for example, the ridges of ancient ridge and furrow agriculture picked out in stark contrast

as the sun sets and shadows lengthen. Standing alone, hearing the landscape as I sketch, I feel tiny in comparison to the grandeur and enormity of these timeless views.’

During April, Caroline’s paintings will be on show in the Heseltine Gallery at Chenderit School, Middleton Cheney, nr Banbury. OX17 2QR.

You can also see her art at Burford Affordable Art Gallery, Burford (venue 351); Hamptons International - Banbury (venue 369) or visit her in her studio dur-ing Artweeks in North Oxfordshire from 21-30th May (venue 383).

This annual award was established to honour Mary Moser’s commitment to Artweeks and to help develop the career of a professional artist who has taken up art as a second career later in life.

Introducing some of Oxfordshire’s best emerging artists Artweeks at The Ashmolean

Children are invited to come and help create a ‘noisy collage’ of the High Street ‘Then and Now’ in response to JMW Turner’s famous painting, working with local artist Francesca Shakespeare. Visit again during Artweeks to see the finished art piece - an interactive screen installation with interactive audio elements (venue 97).Supported by Hamptons International and others.

Edouard Manet’s ‘Portrait of Mademoiselle Claus’ was acquired by the Ashmolean Museum in 2012 following a successful fundraising campaign. With Heritage Lottery Fund support, artists brook & black have made new work, while exploring and reinterpreting Manet’s painting with two local community groups, MIND and Young Dementia UK. brook & black’s work is exhibited during Artweeks and the community work is displayed downstairs in the Education Centre.

Andrew Manson is a talented painter who depicts people and places with flair, colour and bold brush-strokes, a distinctive style influenced by the impressionists movement. During April until 20th May, The Cornerstone (Station Road, Didcot OX11 7NE) presents a new series of his large paintings on Oxford Industries: from from Didcot’s railway history and posters in GWR style to Morris Motors, Frank Coopers Marmalade, and Oxford Ales. You can also see his art at The Chequers Pub, Oxford (venue 83); Hamptons International - Headington (venue 8) during Artweeks.

Samantha Wadham is a multidisciplinary artist whose contemporary twist on floral imagery and the humble wallpaper pattern inspires and intrigue (venue 285). She is interested in the metaphors and meanings of flowers and interprets textiles

through different materials and media, including paper, painting, film and 3D metalwork wallcoverings and sculptural lamps.

Joe Davis is an artist-illustrator who takes inspiration from the places he visits regularly, capturing them and giving them a new identity in black pen coloured digitally, with markers or sometimes watercolour (venue 75).

Klick: Oxford-Leiden (venue 24) is an international project involving eight young artists, four from Oxford (Emma Mayoux-Andrews, Samuel Harriman, Tamsin Corrigan and Lauren Baldwin) and four from Leiden who collaborating artistically in a wide range of media to celebrate the twinning of the two cities.
