This booklet contains a full set of photocopiable test material for use with Oxford Exchange 3. ● one diagnostic test ● ten end-of-unit tests ● three end-of-term tests ● one end-of-year test

Higher-level tests The higher-level tests evaluate your students' command of the language covered in Oxford Exchange through more challenging exercises than those contained in the Test booklet. You can use them with a whole class where most students are coping well with the Oxford Exchange coursework, or to cater for more able students in mixed-ability groups.

CD-ROM The higher-level tests are also available on CD-ROM so that you can copy the files onto your computer and adapt them to suit the needs of your students.

Diagnostic test The diagnostic test can be used at the beginning of the school year. It is designed to cover language which students have already learnt, and it will give a good indication of the level at which your students are entering 2nd cycle ESO. The test should take about 40 minutes and is marked out of a total of 60. For the Writing section, students will need to use a separate sheet of paper.

End-of-unit tests There are ten end-of-unit tests designed to follow the Student’s Book units, and each of them should take 40 minutes to complete. The tests all contain a Vocabulary section (10 marks), and a Grammar section (20 marks), followed by Reading and Writing (5 marks each).

End-of-term and End-of-year tests The end-of-term and end-of-year tests should take about one hour and should be administered at the end of each term. They are divided into four sections: Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading and Writing, and are marked out of a total of 50. End-of-term test 1 is designed to be used after Unit 3, End-of-term test 2 after Unit 7, and End-of-term test 3 after Unit 10. The end-of-term tests are cumulative – that is, End-of-term test 2 covers language from terms 1 and 2, while End-of-term test 3 covers language from all three terms. You may want to use End-of-term test 3 as a practice test in preparation for the final End-of-year test.

Test summary sheet There is a test summary sheet on page 5 of this booklet, which can be used to keep a record of students’ test results during the year.

Suggestions for using the tests ● Warn students in advance that they will be

having a test and tell them what the test will be covering.

● Students need to develop procedures for revision, so encourage them to look back through their notebooks and to use the Grammar and Vocabulary pages at the back of the Student’s Book. You might also want to discuss the amount of time students should spend revising.

● Before students begin a test, spend a few minutes looking through it with the class and make sure that everyone understands how to do each type of activity.

● Students may need extra paper to carry out the Writing tasks.

Dear Jim,

How are you? It was great to get your last letter and hear all your news. I wanted to write back to you last week, but I was very busy. Last weekend was my grandparents’ 50thwedding anniversary so we organized a surprise party for them. We invited everyone in the family and all my grandparents’ friends. About 200 people came – my aunt and uncle and cousins even travelled all the way from Canada! The party was great. We had music from the 1950s and 60s and everyone danced for hours. At midnight we watched some fireworks. I really enjoyed them. My grandparents are going on holiday next week because we bought them a special present from all of us – it’s a cruise around the Mediterranean. My grandma was so happy she cried!

My cousins are staying for a month so last week we visited some of the famous sights in London. They liked the British Museum, but their favourite was the London Eye – it’s the big wheel near the River Thames which was built for the millennium.

Write soon!

Lots of love

M ost people think that Hollywood is an exciting and glamorous place, but not many

people know the story of its origins. Hollywood was born from violence and crime. When the film industry started in the early twentieth century, most directors made films on the east coast of America, in New York and Chicago. However, the inventor Thomas Edison had the patents for almost all the sound equipment, electric lights and techniques that were necessary to make films. Film makers had to pay Edison a lot of money to use them. A lot of film makers stole equipment or copied Edison’s inventions and techniques illegally because they couldn’t pay these expensive costs. Edison was furious so he paid some criminals to attack actors in these films. They even tried to murder at least one of the directors. The situation became very violent and many film makers left to escape from Edison and his criminals. They looked for an area that was cheap, had a lot of light and a good climate all year. They found the ideal place in California – Los Angeles. Los Angeles had a fantastic climate, it wasn’t expensive and it was only 150 kilometres from Mexico, so it was easy for the film makers to escape if there were any problems with illegal equipment. A few years later Edison lost his monopoly and the crime and violence ended, but Hollywood remained.

B onnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were members of a gang that was famous in the early 1930s.

They robbed a series of banks in the southern states of America and escaped from the police every time because they had a new Ford car. This car was very popular with criminals because it was very fast. In fact, it was much better and more modern than the cars the police had, so the Barrow gang knew they could escape without any problems. They often took terrible risks, but in a few years they stole a lot of money. In 1934 they went to Louisiana. They knew the police were looking for them so they decided to go there and find a safe place to hide. However, they didn’t know that the Texas Rangers also wanted to capture them. The Rangers worked with the police and they specialized in catching dangerous criminals. Parker and Barrow were driving to a friend’s house when the Rangers attacked their car. The Rangers wanted to arrest them, but they tried to escape so the Rangers shot them. According to legend, Parker and Barrow were eating at the time. Many years later, a Hollywood director made a film about them called Bonnie and Clyde. It was very successful and became the model for many gangster films.

SHOPPING FOR LIFE

The food you buy in the supermarket says a lot about you and your lifestyle. Mark Willis, an expert in consumer habits, analyzes two people’s shopping:

CASE 1 (SIMON AND JENNY)

Well, there’s a chicken and some red meat. There isn’t any fish, except tinned tuna. There are three kilos of potatoes and some onions. There aren’t many other fresh vegetables, but there are a lot of frozen vegetables. They’ve also got some frozen burgers, a pizza and some other pre-prepared food. I’d say this is for a couple with young children. Probably both parents work and they don’t have much time to prepare meals during the week. It’s all basic food and there isn’t any wine or beer, just fruit juice and milk.

CASE 2 (JUSTIN)

Let’s see. There’s a bottle of white wine, some salmon and cream, a selection of different types of cheese and a loaf of freshly baked bread. There are some olives and some fresh fruit, mixed vegetables and a big box of chocolates. I think that this is a special meal, probably for two people or a few friends. This person probably doesn’t cook very often and he or she is buying just enough food for this meal, not for the whole week. It’s probably a younger person who likes good food – and sweets!

RECENT INVENTIONS

● A British company has invented a mobile lie detector – it looks almost exactly like a mobile phone, but it can immediately detect if a person is telling the truth or not! The police could use them soon to help catch criminals.

● Tiger has started selling a robot dog. The cyberpet can walk, sit down and stand up. It has got an intelligent sensor that can detect walls and borders and react to different sounds. It has even got a voice-recognition system so it knows who is speaking.

● For only twelve euros you can buy a mini-telescope. It’s fifteen centimetres long so you can carry it in your pocket. It looks like a silver pen, but scientists have perfected the lens so you can see a distance of up to eleven kilometres with absolute clarity. Nature-lovers use the mini-telescopes to observe animals and birds in their natural habitat.

● Creative Laboratories have designed the ideal present for music lovers. It’s a digital sound reproducer. This small, portable machine can record about 100 hours of music from your computer (that’s about 150 CDs!). You can programme it to play the songs in the order you choose. It costs around 510 euros.

He’s into computers and computer games and he thinks that I am too. Now he wants me to send him a photo of myself by e-mail – how do you do that? It turns out he lives in Liverpool too and he wants to meet me at a cybercafé he knows. And he thinks I’m seventeen and I’ve got blonde hair. I don’t know what to do. You know that I don’t know anything about computers and I’ve never played one of those games in my life! I’m sure if I tell him the truth, he’ll be furious – or he’ll think I’m really silly. If I send him my photo, he’ll find out that I’m not blonde, but if I don’t send him my photo, he might think I’m not interested. The thing is, I really want to meet him because he sounds lovely and he hasn’t got a girlfriend! He likes canoeing and skiing and they’re my favourite sports. What do you think? MANY PEOPLE ARE ENVIOUS of Jennifer Aniston – some because she’s got beautiful long, straight, blonde hair, some because she’s a successful actress and some because they like her husband, Brad Pitt! She was born in 1969 and she became famous when she played the part of Rachel in the TV series Friends. Jennifer is still acting in the series, although she decided that she wanted to diversify her career and act in films. Rock Star has, of course, been a huge success. It’s a comedy about rock music in the 1980s. ‘It was great fun to make, although some of the scenes were very difficult to do, especially the dance scenes,’ says Jennifer. When we buy clothes there are a lot of complex decisions to make. Is fashion, comfort or price the most important thing to consider? Does it matter if you wear different clothes from all your friends? We asked two young people what they think:

DAMIAN ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● Well, I suppose fashion is important to me, but I like to be comfortable too. I do a lot of sport so I like more casual clothes – but I prefer to buy smarter tracksuits and trainers. My friends all wear them, although they don’t all do sports! I don’t think the clothes you wear are the most important thing about you. Some of the boys in my class wear quite old-fashioned clothes, but they’ve got girlfriends – it doesn’t make any difference. The most important thing is to be yourself.

SALLY ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● I like designer clothes because I think the quality is better. Of course, they’re more expensive and I haven’t got much money so I buy other clothes too. I think most designer clothes are too expensive – they should be cheaper. I never buy things that are on special offer – they’re usually the clothes that the shop can’t sell and they’re always horrible. I think being comfortable is as important as looking good. Most of my friends are interested in fashion too.

Birmingham is a large city in central England. In the past the police have had a lot of problems with gangs of young people and so they’ve started a controversial new project. Detective Inspector Davis is in charge of the project. Can you explain what the project is about?

Well, we had problems because a lot of the young people in Birmingham don’t have jobs, so they don’t have much money and they have a lot of free time. We often arrested them for drinking alcohol or for painting graffiti on public property. These aren’t serious crimes, but these young people could become criminals. The project offers a lot of opportunities. People who become part of it are allowed to choose different training programmes, from karate and judo to using a computer database. Young people who havecompleted more than two years on the programme can also decide to join the police or become instructors on one of the courses.

It sounds great. So, why do some people think the project is dangerous?

They don’t like the fact that we train these young people in martial arts. They think it makes them more violent.

You obviously don’t agree. No. After three years, we’ve found these courses help young people to increase their confidence and they don’t spend all their free time on the streets. Of course, not all the young people stay, but it’s a start and we plan to continue it.

C Reading 6 Read the text and answer the questions.

The PESETA became part of history at the start of 2002 when the euro was introduced. The peseta was 134 years old when it finally disappeared. It became the official currency in Spain at the end of the 1860s, but at first there were only coins. The first banknotes were printed in 1874. Curiously, the peseta was invented for the same reasons as the euro – for commercial purposes. Before that, there were a lot of different currencies in Spain and it was difficult to do business with other European countries. In 1865 a monetary union was founded by France, Switzerland, Italy and Belgium. They wanted to establish an exchange rate, so Spain needed a unique currency and the peseta was born.

CURIOUS FACTS

● The Bank of Spain was given the monopoly for printing banknotes in 1874. The Casa de la Moneda in Madrid has produced all the coins in Spain since 1881.

● The most valuable coin is a one hundred peseta coin which was produced in 1870. Only thirty of these coins exist in the world. A collector paid forty million pesetas for the last one that was sold.

● Old coins are usually more valuable than banknotes because they are in better condition.

● The most valuable old banknote from the twentieth century is a five hundred peseta banknote which was printed in 1903. The paper that was used was very bad quality, so not many of the notes have survived.

1 According to the writer, do people still shop in the traditional way?

S ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●

hopping habits have changed over the years. It’s true that a lot of people still shop in the

traditional way – by going to the shops, looking at the different designs and prices and then choosing the one they want to buy. But this is no longer the only option. What other possibilities are there?

If you haven’t got enough time to go shopping, you can order a catalogue and look at it in the comfort of your own home. You’re allowed to take as long as you want to decide and then you simply order by phone and your shopping is delivered to your door. Alternatively, you can search for special offers on the Internet and buy what you want with a click of the mouse.

Another recent phenomenon is shopping through magazine auctions. All you need is a credit card and a copy of the auction magazine. This has adverts and photos of all the products that they are selling. These might be anything from dishwashers and irons to the most modern computers or perhaps cars and motorbikes. If you want to buy a new bike, for example, you look at the adverts. They show the usual prices of the bikes in the shops, a minimum price for each one and how many there are for sale. You phone with your offer and then wait. The auction company collects all the offers and accepts the highest offers. If you are successful, your bike will be delivered to you. Perhaps in the future we’ll do all our shopping by phone or on the Internet!

1 How long did Susan live in Africa? ...............................……………………… 2 What problems were there in Kenya?

Personality of the month: TENNIS STAR

SUSAN JORDAN What can you tell us about your childhood?

Well, I was born in Kenya in January 1979 and I lived there until I was six.

Was that an amazing experience? Yes, I can remember seeing elephants and giraffes. Of course, there was a lot of poverty and sickness, although I don’t remember much about it. Then we moved back to New Zealand and everything was totally different. I found it all very strange at first. Luckily, I made some good friends at school.

Was last year a good year for you? Yes, it was. I married John and I won the New Zealand Tennis Championship Cup! I also learned to dive and we had an amazing holiday in Australia diving on the coral reefs. We saw hundreds of different kinds of fish, and one time I was swimming behind John when we saw a shark!

And what are your plans for the future? I’ve lived in Christchurch since 1997. We both love it, but there are more opportunities in a bigger place so we might move to Australia. If we do, we’ll go to Sydney because my sister lives there. I’m going to continue playing tennis and I want to compete in America and Britain. John’s planning to have an exhibition of his photos and paintings in March, so we’ll be busy. We’ve also bought a boat, so we can go sailing and diving which will be great.

One last question. What’s been your best experience ever?

Climbing to the summit of Mount Cook, the highest mountain in the Southern Alps. We camped there and watched the sunset over the island. John took lots of photos, but it’s really too beautiful to capture on film. We didn’t stay long enough for me – it was wonderful!
