CE1.6: In order to know about electrical installation, I collected some previous electrical installation report from my office. For rules and regulations I studied BNBC2006, BER-1937 and NFPA 70. I also searched in various websites in the internet such as www.powerelectronical.com, http://en.wikipedia.org etc regarding this subject. I prepared a schedule of tests and measures to be done. CE1.7: In the second week of September, 2009, I joined a meeting, with my controlling officer Engr. Md. Ibrahim Khalil Ullah, Director (Technical) and the other members of the installation committee. I submitted the list of tests and measures to be performed to my controlling officer for his approval. He agreed to my proposal. He also told me to complete the task as early as possible. So I prepared a program schedule where seven days for site work and another four days for report preparation. CE1.8: During the second week of September, I studied some books regarding electrical installation. These are Electrical Wiring, Estimating & Costing by S.L Uppal; Electrical and Electronic Measurement and Instrumentation by Swheny; Switchgear Protection and Power Systems by Sunil S. Rao. I also checked the tool box and the testing equipments and found that everything was alright. The specifications of the testing equipments were as follows:

Insulation Resistance Test Equipment:

Specification: MIT410-TC2, 100 G-ohms Meggar applying 0.5 KV or 1 KV (according to

the voltage rating of equipment).

Contact Resistance Testing Equipment:

Specification: MIT430-TC2, 200 G-ohms

Digital Earth Resistance Tester:

Specification: MODEL 4105A, KYORITSU ELECTRICAL INSTRUMENTS WORKS LTD.

CE1.9: In the second week of September, I joined a meeting with the technical staffs. They were Mr. Ariful Islam, Sumon Sharkar, Johirul Islam, Afzal Hossain, Atiqur Rahman. I explained them technical details of the job. CE1.10: In the third week of September, I started to work to complete my tasks. There were two electricity sources for the factory, 1 MVA 440V Gas generator and REB with two 500 KVA transformers. They are alternately use. These transformers were 3phase, 11/.440KV, OLTC type transformer. I visually checked both the transformers to make sure whether:

All radiator valves are open.

All radiators are properly vented.

All valves properly open and close.

Silica gel breather plugs are removed and reservoir is filled with oil.

Pressure relief diaphragm is intact.

Oil level is alright.

Earth Connection is satisfactory.

There is no oil leak.

All trip and alarm signal work properly. I found both the transformer satisfactory regarding the visual check. I performed the insulation resistance check using the 5 KV and 2.5 KV insulation resistance testing equipment. I connected the low voltage (LV) winding to the earth. Then I applied 5 KV DC voltages to the high voltage (HV) winding and measured the insulation resistance at 15 sec and 60 sec respectively. I also measured the insulation resistance between the core and earth. I again connected the HV winding to earth and applied 5 KV DC to LV winding and measured the insulation resistance. I found satisfactory result regarding the Insulation Resistance check of both the power transformers. As an example I have given the result of the insulation resistance check for one transformer which was as follows:

Insulation Resistance Check- Transformer-1

Winding 15 sec 60 sec DC Voltage

Core to earth 1250 MΩ 1100 MΩ 2.5 KV

HV to LV earthed 1200MΩ 1600 MΩ 5 KV

LV to HV earthed 8500 MΩ 1000 MΩ 5 KV

I performed the Di- electric test of transformer oil. I measured the breakdown voltage using the oil tester. I found that the breakdown voltage of the main tank sample was around 46 KV and that of the tap changer tank sample was around 69.2 KV. I was ready to employ centrifuge machine for centrifuging the transformer oil in case of any unsatisfactory result of the breakdown voltage test. However, I did not need to employ the centrifuge machine because the breakdown voltage was satisfactory. I performed the short circuit test of both transformers. In order to do so I disconnected the neutral phase from earth and short the LV phases. Then I energized HV side by 400 volt 3 phase supply and measured the HV winding currents. I found zero ampere current in neutral phase for both transformers. Here I have shown the results obtained in the following table for one transformer in highest, lowest and rated tap position.

The connection diagram was as follows:

I also check the generator visually as the followings:

CE1.11: I finished my assigned tasks on 21st October. The other members of the committee also completed their respective tasks. I prepared test report using MS Word and submitted it to my controlling officer. I also took part in preparing a power point presentation and presented it to the client at office. CE1.12: On the 22nd October, 2009, in the presence of the installation committee, and the client Mr. Kazi Abu Zafor, General Manager, Ducati Apparels Ltd., I energized the substation. All the transformers and the breakers were switched on and the system was normal. My controlling officer was satisfied at my performance and congratulated me. I asked the substation operators to inform me instantly of any unwanted condition such as sound, smoke, malfunction of electrical and manual closing/opening operation of breakers etc. After 22nd October, I used to take information from the operators for the next one week about the condition of the substation equipments. CE1.13: I was very careful while performing the tests. I used the testing equipments carefully and measured the test results without any error. If the test results were not accurate, the transformers, breakers and other high voltage equipments would not work properly in energized state and there might be fire hazard, cable fault etc. CE1.14: I used to inform my controlling officer time to time about the progress of the project. I had to consider the matter of time because it had to be completed before 22nd October, 2009. CE1.15: I could complete the project in time because my technical staffs were sound and sincere in their respective duties. Besides, the other engineers of the installation committee of client performed their respective tasks such as construction, structure work, digging for earthing pit etc. efficiently. There I maintained a good understanding among all of us. As a result of our collective effort we could finish the task in time. CE1.16: I made sure that all the firing extinguishers, artificial respiration and the first aid box in the substation were alright. I used caution and danger tags where applicable. I also checked whether all the technical staffs had followed the following safety standards or not:

To wear helmet.

To wear rubber shoes.

To use high voltage tester before touching high voltage equipment.

To wear proper uniform.

CE1.17: I kept all the documents of the project in a systemic way. After the completion of the project I presented that to my management. I kept all the expenditure papers for future check by audit department. I always maintained documents in files and also maintained the different measurement records and test results in different files, which helped me to organize my work. CE3.18: My controlling officer was pleased at my performance and he appreciated me verbally. In the month of January I also attended a seminar organized by Energypac Bangladesh Limited, Bangladesh( a transformer and switchgear manufacturing company) where I could know about different products such as protection systems, latest switchgear and breaker features, fire proof paint, automatic moisture absorption system for keeping the transformer oil moisture free etc. However, I prepared an upgrading report using MS Word and submitted it to my controlling officer at the end of October, 2009. In my report I suggested some future plan. In the recent year many incidents of earthing problem in electricity distribution system is occurring which responsible for many unwanted occurrences in distribution system such as transformer explosion due to surge voltage, inadequate voltage level in load sides, electric shock etc. I suggested to research on earthing system improvement and selecting earthing system depending on earth characteristics of different areas. Summary: CE1.19: This project was very important to me. In this project, I realized the importance of being accurate in engineering practice. The testing procedure, the measurements of the test result, the analysis and explanation of the result and finally the decision making-all these must be very accurate in order to handle the safe and sound operation of high voltage transformers, breakers etc. I accomplished all of my tasks properly. So the successful operation of Electrical installation could have been possible. Besides engineering practice, I also learned the art of motivating the client as well as the technical stuffs. I inspired them to work fast to complete the task as soon as possible. I consider this project as a breakthrough in my career.
