General Maintenance

Your ThyssenKrupp Elevator is the finest piece of equipmentof its type on the market today. It is designed, manufacturedand installed to minimize maintenance. However, maintenance must be provided to prolong the life of your equipmentand protect your investment.

A planned sequential procedure, regularly performed, willkeep your maintenance cost to an absolute minimum andensure realization of the long trouble free service theequipment was designed to deliver. The procedure shouldbegin the day the elevator goes into service. Cleanliness ofthe elevator's components, machine room and hoistwaycannot be overstressed.

Every precaution should be takenwhen servicing any elevator,

whether specifically mentioned here or not. Commonsense precautions should be followed making sure lifeand limb of the person servicing the elevator and the publie is not endangered.

Procedures listed in this manual that involve entering thehoistway or machine room should only be carried out byatrained elevator professional. Electrical and mechanicalhazards exist for untrained service personnel who are unfamiliar with this type of equipment.

Make certain ALL voltage is removed before touching anyparts of the electric controller or its peripherals. Due tothe nature of some internal controller power supplies,voltage may be present on some components after the input power source has been removed. Always check forvoltage with a meter before servicing any component.

When access to the pit or hoistway is necessary, see thatsafety measures are used to protect the public as well asthe servicing personnel.

Sliding Guides

1. Check Guide Shoes at regular intervals for condition andadjustment. Check the clearance between guide shoesand the guide rails. Sliding shoes should be fitted to therail with approximately 1/32 " clearance. All bolts holdingthe shoes in place should be tight. Check that the boltedconnections on the guide rail and brackets are securelyfastened.

2. For sliding guide shoes, check that guide rails are coatedwith a film of approved lubricant (nameplate specified) toensure smooth operation. Guide rail lubricators, whenused, are located either at the top of the guide rails or onthe top guide shoes. The level of lubricant should bechecked regularly and refilled when low.

Cabs

1. Visually inspect the cab for burned out lamps, damagedflooring or carpeting and damage to cab fixtures.

2. Check that all bolted connections on the cab are tightened securely.

3. Ensure that the car sill is clean at all times as trash in thesill grooves can affect proper door operation.

4. Keep the car push button station clean and dry, as dirt ormoisture can cause electrical problems.

1. Check the car and hoistway doors and the door operatorfor ease of operation. Any binding or dragging of thedoors indicates a need for alignment or adjustment.

2. Ensure that the doors are plumb and close completely.Excessive looseness may constitute a safety hazard.

3. The guide grooves in the hoistway sills should always bekept clean. NEVER sweep dirt or trash into the hoistway.

4. An experienced ThyssenKrupp serviceman should checkthe power door operation, linkage and door hardwareregularly.

Checklist

• Ensure that all pivots in the linkage mechanism on thedoors have free operation and are lubricated sparingly.

• Inspect brushes regularly on DC motors and replace whenworn excessively.

• Check for proper operation of the switches and sensorswhich governs acceleration and deceleration of the dooroperator motor.

• Check that the pick-up rollers and clutch operate smoothly.

• Check the vee belts on the drive wheel and motor for tension, fraying or splitting.

Failure to provide this regular maintenance, beginning whenthe equipment is new, will eventually result in prematurefailure of components with consequent equipment breakdowns. ThyssenKrupp Elevator strongly recommends thatmaintenance be carried out by a member of their nationalqualified service organization. There is no substitute for thetrained eye and hand of an experienced elevator serviceman.

Rotating electrical equipment.Use strict safety precautions

when performing these tasks. Do not wear loose clothing,jewelry or other items that can become entangled in themoving parts of the machine or belts. Never place yourself physically in a position where unexpected motion ofthe machine could be harmful.

1. Prevent dust accumulation by keeping the machine roomand hoistway clean. Dust or dirt accumulated in the windings will reduce the ability of the unit to dissipate heat andimpair efficiency.

• Should dust collect, blow it out, taking precautions to guardagainst personal injury as well as to avoid damage to theequipment.

2. Check the brushes of DC motors for wear and replacewhere necessary, using only genuine ThyssenKruppbrushes.

NOTE: Use of the wrong brushes may seriously damage thecommutator and/or interfere with the operation land adjustment of electrical components.

3. The spring tension ofThyssenKrupp brush holders is automatically maintained and never needs adjustment.

• Check to be sure the brush is free in its holder and thespring is applying even pressure. ThyssenKrupp recommends that brush replacement be done by a qualified serviceman.

1. Check the following:

a. The machine room is well ventilated and proper clearance is provided around the Power Unit per local coderequirement.

b. Oil level is within the safe limits as shown on theindicator. Only use hydraulic fluid that meetsThyssenKrupp specifications. Contact your localThyssenKrupp Office for the fluid recommended foryour area.

c. Check that all belts, if used, are properly tensioned.

d. Ensure that any fluid leakage is cleaned and that allcovers are in place on the Power Unit.

Controller

All maintenance and adjustment of the controller should bedone by qualified ThyssenKrupp personnel as they are bestqualified to safely and correctly perform the necessary steps.

Jacks

Jack inspection should only be made by qualifiedThyssenKrupp personnel.

1. Inspect jack head for cleanliness and leakage. Removeany debris or oil that has accumulated.

I Care and Cleaning of Architectural Metals

Listed below are suggested care and cleaning instructionsand typical products for use by building owners. Any cleaning

or refinishing, other than routine, should be handled byqualified professions.

#4 Brushed and #7 or #8 Mirror Finished Stainless Steel

The use of chloride-containing cleaners must be avoided.Surfae damage will occur from the use of such cleaners.Routine cleaning with a mild dishwasher liquid will removefingerprints, smears and everyday liquids such as soda,coffee and other beverages. Consumer type glass cleaners

are also effective on fingerprints and beverage spills and agood stainless steel cleaner can also be used. Do not useabrasives such as scouring powders. Always finish with a lightrinse of warm clean water.

#4 Brushed and #7 or #8 Mirror Finished Muntz (Bronze)

Only routine care and cleaning is recommended. The surfaceshould be waxed weekly with paste wax (or more oftendepending on building traffic). This puts a protective coatingof wax over the lacquer and reduces scuffing. Do not use anyabrasives or chemical cleaners. This type of product will

cause damage. Recommended cleaning is to remove spills,smears and fingerprints with a soft cloth dampened with plaintap water. If this recommendation is not followed, early failureof the coating will occur.

ThyssenKrupp Baked Enamel Finishes

Routine cleaning with a mild detergent, soap and water willremove fingerprints, smears and everyday type liquid spills

such as coffee or soda. Do not use any abrasive powders orharsh chemicals.

.. Owner's ManualThe following is a list of the major components of a Door Operator. See Figure 1. (It includes adescription of their functions, overviewof some of the critical adjustments and maintenance information. See Installation and Maintenance for details.)

• Adjustable Arm - The arm mounted to the drive wheel.Used to change the amount of linear door movement orstroke.

• Connecting Arm - Connects the drive arm to the door panel.

• Door Operator Support - A metal plate welded to theheader. The Door Operator is mounted to the Door Operator Support with (4) four bolts through the (4) mountingslots of the Door Operator.

• Drive Arm - The linkage connected between the drive armsupport and the connecting arm.

• Drive Arm Support - The bracket on top of the door operator containing two holes. The drive arm should be connected to the right hand hole, as you look from the hatch,at the front of the door operator.

• Drive Wheel - A metal sheave containing a slotted camsurface. The adjustable arm mounts to the drive wheel andis adjusted in the slotted cam surface. The drive wheel isdriven by the jack shaft sheave using 3 Vbelts. Adjustmentof the linear door travel or stroke is accomplished by moving the adjustable arm. Moving the adjustable arm closerto the center of the drive wheel results in less door travel forthe same amount of wheel rotation. Moving the adjustablearm toward the outside of the drive wheel results in moredoor travel for the same amount of wheel rotation.

• Idler Arm - An adjustable arm mounted to the front of thedoor operator which controls the tension of the 3Vbelts between the jack shaft sheave and the drive wheel.

• Intermediate Arm - Adjustable linkage connected between the drive wheel adjustable arm and the pivot arm.The connection at the pivot arm is adjustable to control thelength of the intermediate arm.

• Mechanical Stops - Metal Lbrackets mounted to the frontof the door operator. The stops have slots to adjust theamount of drive wheel rotation. Once positioned they limitthe physical rotation of the drive wheel.

• Motor - 115V or 230V DC Motor

• Pivot Arm - Connects the drive arm to the intermediatearm. Provides an adjustment for the length of the intermediate arm.

• Sheave, Jack Shaft - Aspoked sheave driven by the dooroperator motor with a single V belt. The motor sheavedrives the jack shaft sheave which drives the drive wheel.

• Sheave, Motor - A sheave attached directly to the dooroperator motor shaft.

• Support Strut - Unistrut legs on the rear of the door operator. Used to secure the rear of the operator to the car topand to plumb the face of the drive wheel.

1. Check that the motor mounting bolts are tight. • If belts are replaced on mUlti-groove sheaves, theyshould be changed as a matched set.

•

2. Remove the brush covers (where applicable), blowoutthe brush holders, check the brushes for wear, and reinstall the covers.

3. Inspect the operator belts for cracks or glazing, even wear(on both sides), that the belts are not bottomed out in thegrooves and for proper tension (belt slippage).

NOTE: The following guidelines apply when testing, adjusting, or replacing belts:

• Ideal tension is the lowest tension at which the belt willnot slip at peak load.

• All belts in the set should be tested for equal tensionby pushing each belt down at the midpoint betweenthe pulleys. (Typical deflection is 3/8" with 10 Ibf applied.)

• If belts require tensioning, sheave alignment shouldbe checked with a straight edge.

4. Check that all linkage bolts are tight.

5. Remove the door operator cover and rotate the door operator by hand and check the operation of DOL and DClsensors.

6. Check the operation of the gate switch and that it is adjusted per code.

7. Using a burnishing tool or clean rough paper, clean thegate switch contacts if necessary. Replace the door operator cover.

8. Check for excessive bearing wear.

Changing The Door Operator Belt(Single Speed)NOTE: Refer to Figure 3 for this procedure.

1. Loosen the 3/8 " Adjustment Screw located between theIdler Base and the Push Bar by turning it Clockwise intothe Idler Base.

6. Measure and cut new belt to proper length, if required.

OPENING TYPE OPENING WIDTH BELT LENGTH

Single Speed 36 Inches 98 Inches

Single Speed 42 Inches 110 Inches

7. Using the Top Belt Clamp as a template, match drill two3/16 " holes, one in each end of the belt.

2. Loosen the Idler Base by loosening the two 3/8 " bolts oneither end of the Idler Base. 8. Place the belt in position and reinstall the Top Belt Clamp

with the two #10 Hex Socket Cap Screws.

3. Push the Idler Base toward the Push Bar.

4. Remove the two #10 Hex Socket Cap Screws in the TopBelt Clamp and remove the Top Belt Clamp.

9. Tighten the belt for acceptable belt tension by turning theAdjustment Screw Counterclockwise from the Idler Base.

10. Tighten the two 3/8 " bolts on either end of the Idler Base.

5. Remove the Door Operator Belt.

Center Opening 42 Inches 151 Inches

1. Loosen the 3/8 /1 Adjustment Screw located between theIdler Base and the Push Bar by turning it Clockwise intothe Idler Base.

8. Using the Top Belt Clamp as a template, match drill two3/16 /1 holes, one in each end of the belt.

2. Loosen the Idler Base by loosening the two 3/8 /1 bolts oneither end of the Idler Base.

9. Place the belt in position and reinstall the Top Belt Clampwith two #10 Hex Socket Cap Screws.

,.3. Push the Idler Base toward the Push Bar.

4. Remove the two #10 Hex Socket Cap Screws in the TopBelt Clamp and remove the Top Belt Clamp.

5. Remove the four #10 Hex Socket Cap Screws CenterOpening Belt Clamp and the Belt Brace Clamp together.

10. Reinstall the Center Opening Belt Clamp on the Belt BraceClamp with four #10 Hex Socket Cap Screws.

11. Tighten the belt for acceptable belt tension by turning theAdjustment Screw Counterclockwise from the Idler Base.

12. Tighten the two 3fa /I bolts on either end of the Idler Base.

6. Remove the Door Operator Belt.

Introduction

The Memco elite Model 640 safety system provides alight-curtain of infra-red beams operating between the lift cardoors. Any person or object breaking the beams will triggerthe system and re-open the doors. The dense beam patternwill pick up even very small objects between the car doors.

The 640 safety system consists of atransmitter detector (TX)and a receiver detector (RX) mounted on the car doors. The

system will automatically sense the door separation andadjust itself for optimum performance. No setting up isrequired.

In many installations aseparate controller is unnecessary andthe detectors can be connected direct to the lift controller ordoor operator.

Operation

The 640 light curtain uses 32 transmit diodes in the TXdetector and 32 receive diodes in the RX detector. The lightcurtain uses a 154-beam pattern when the doors are fullyopen (Fig 1). The pattern changes to 94 beams as the doorsclose to approximately 600mm and maintains 72 beams rightup to closure.

Surface mount technology has led to a great improvement inthe optics allowing diagonal beams to function to doorclosure. The diodes are manufactured using a techniquewhich improves both consistency and reliability. The speciallens is used in conjunction with the surface mount diodes tooptimise the system performance.

Installation

Owner's ManualSoftware Features

The Model 640 can be installed on center-opening (Fig 2) orside-opening (Fig 3) doors. The unit is normally configured forcentreopening but using the Quick Fix strike post moulding,the 640 can be converted in seconds.

The QuickFix mouldings allow fast installation to the elevatordoor in any position along the 2050mm long fixing flange.

Power Reduction Function

This software feature prolongs the life-span of the detectorsby putting them into a less active state when the lift is not inuse. It automatically activates when the detectors are stoppedvery close together for more than 10 seconds. In this mode,scanning is reduced to once every 2 seconds. If the doorsstart to open, or an obstruction is detected, then the normalscanning and trigger mode is resumed.

SYSTEM CONNECTION

For trouble-free installation we recommend installing the 640system with a Memco 280 power supply. However in manysituations the 640 can be directly connected to the liftcontroller or door operator.

Using a Memco Power Supply

A Memco power supply eliminates concern about theelectrical environment into which the 640 is being installedand simplifies wiring. (See Figure 8.)

Owner's Manual.. The detectors have AMP connectors preinstalled which fitonto the pin headers provided in the 280.

The Memco power supply provides:

• a regulated DC supply for the 640 detectors

• a relay output for connection to the door re-open circuit

• an audible tone when the light-curtain is broken (Note - thiscan be disabled)

• Model 280 is powered from an AC supply (115V)

The Model 280 is factory-set for "fail-safe" operation usingstandard PNP-N/C 640 detectors. However switches areprovided to allow detectors with other transistor configurations to be used.

Direct Connection

The connectors are keyed and can only be installed in thecorrect position. If forced incorrectly by the installer thelocking tab will be broken and can cause possible damage tothe detectors.

The 640 can be connected directly to the lift-controller ordoor-operator if it has a suitable power supply and "doorreopen" circuit. A special adaptor cable is required forThyssen lifts. The power supply must be regulated DC(11-30V) with no transients. The door reopen circuit mustaccept a transistor drive and the current must never exceedlOOmA.

Changes in oil temperature will cause changes in valvebehavior. Adjust the valve when the oil is at its operatingtemperature of 80 0 F to 110° F. belts.

Be EXTREM ELY careful when making adjustments near moving

Up side adjustments do not affect down side adjustments nordo down side adjustments affect up side adjustments.

The power unit should be located in a room that is ventilatedand heated between 50°F and 80°F.

The procedures contained in thismanual are intended for the use of

qualified elevator personnel. In the interest of your personal safety and the safety of others, do NOT attemptANY procedure that you are NOT qualified to perform.

Preliminary Settings

NOTE: If the valve is assembled on a power unit shipped fromthe Factory, begin with FinalAdjustments.

Ensure ALL safety precautions arefollowed when operating the ele

vator from the controller.

Low Pressure Adjustment

1. Turn the LOW PRESSURE adjustment screw OUT (ccw)13//' (45 mm) beyond the cover plate. See Figure 2.

2. Turn IN (cw) by hand until it touches the regulator piston.

Up Section

Preparation

1. Ensure car is empty before making settings.

2. Turn OFF mainline power.

3. Lower the car onto the buffers by opening the MANUALLOWERING valve. See Figure 1.

4. Close the MANUAL LOWERING valve.

5. Install apressure gauge on the quick connector providedon far side of valve. See Figure 1.

Relief Pressure Adjustment

1. Turn the RELIEF PRESSURE adjustment screw OUT (ccw)until %" (15 mm) extends beyond the relief assemblyhousing and tighten locknut. See Figure 1.

Down StartAdjustment

Up Leveling Speed Adjustment

1. Turn the UP LEVELING adjustment screw OUT (ccw) untilit stops. See Figure 1 and Figure 2.

2. Turn IN (cw) 4 turns.

To avoid damage to the pistonface and seat, never turn the

Lowering and Leveling Speed Adjustment unless the caris resting on the buffers or the car isin motion.

Adjustment Needles

NOTE: Do not loosen the nuts on the adjustment needlestems to make adjustments. They should be snug against thevalve body at all times.

1. Turn the UP START, UP STOP, and UP SLOWDOWN adjustment needles In (cw) to fully closed position. SeeFigure 2.

2. Turn the UP START needle OUT (ccw) 9 turns.

3. Turn the UP STOP needle OUT (ccw) 3 turns.

4. The UP SLOWDOWN needle should remain closed at thistime.

Down Section

Lowering and Leveling Speed Adjustment

1. With the car set on the buffers adjust the LOWERING andLEVELING screw so that 3/4 " (20 mm) extends beyondthe valve body. See Figure 3.

3. Tighten locknut.

Adjustment Needles

Flat Side

1. Turn the DOWN START, DOWN STOP, and the DOWNSLOWDOWN adjustment In (cw) to the fUlly closed. SeeFigure 2.

2. Turn the DOWN START adjustment OUT (ccw) 9 turns.

3. Turn the DOWN STOP adjustment OUT (ccw) 10 turns.

4. The DOWN SLOWDOWN adjustment must remain closedat this time.

Up Section



Preparation

1. Ensure the car is empty and the MANUAL LOWERINGvalve is closed before setting. See Figure 5.

2. Turn Off mainline power.

Up Section - Low Pressure Adjustment

1. Disable the up slow solenoid by disconnecting the solenoid wire from the controller. (Refer to the appropriatecontroller diagrams.)

2. Disable the up fast solenoid by placing the controller onINSPECTION. (The type of controller will determine howINSPECTION operation is accomplished.)

3. Turn power On and start motor.(Refer to the appropriatecontroller diagrams to start pump motor.)

4. Turn the LOW PRESSURE adjustment IN (cw) until the carjust starts to move. See Figure 6.

5. Turn the LOW PRESSURE adjustment OUT (ccw) until thecar movement stops.

6. After the car stops, turn the LOW PRESSURE adjustmentOUT (CCW) an additional 1/2 turn.

NOTE: On valves marked with SP on the cover plate or thevalve nameplate, use the instructions for the special regulatorpiston as follows:

- Turn the LOW PRESSURE adjustment OUT (ccw) 3turns. Check for too much time delay upon motorstarting and car movement. Turn the adjustment In(cw) until excessive delay is eliminated. Car must bestopped and started to check setting.

2. With the controller on inspection turn the power on, startthe motor and read the pressure

Stop power unit IMMEDIATELY ifpressure exceeds 625 P.S.1.

3. Adjust the RELIEF VALVE to relieve at the pressure indicated on the power unit nameplate. See Figure 6.

4. Tighten the locknut and turn Off Power.

5. Relieve the jack pressure by opening the MANUAL LOWERING valve. See Figure 7.

6. Close the MANUAL LOWERING valve .

7. Turn On Power and recheck relief pressure.

8. Turn Off power and repeat steps 5 and 6.

9. Open LINE SHUT-OFF valve.

Up Slowdown and Up Leveling Speed Adjustment

1. Turn the UP SLOWDOWN adjustment OUT (ccw) 10 turns.(This ensures that the car does not initially start up.) SeeFigure 6.

2. With the car on INSPECTION, start the car up. Slowly turnthe UP SLOWDOWN adjustment screw in (cw) until the carmoves at 10 to 12 fpm. (3 to 3.7 M/min.)

7. Tighten the locknut.

8. Stop motor and turn the power Off.

9. Remove any jumpers that may have been used.

10. Reconnect the up slow solenoid wire to the controller.

Relief Pressure Adjustment

1. Close the line SHUT-OFF valve and install a pressuregauge.

3. Recheck UP LEVELING speed.

1. Ensure that the DOWN STOPadjustment screw has beenturned OUT (ccw) 10 turns. (See Figure 6) (This ensuresthe car does not initially start down.)

2. Place the car on INSPECTION and start the car down.Slowly turn the DOWN STOP adjustment In (cw) until thecar runs down at 15-20 fpm. (4.5 to 6 M/min)

3. Turn the LOWERING and LEVELING speed adjustment byless than 1/4 turn increments, to adjust leveling speed to10-12 fpm. (3 to 3.5 M/min.) Pause between eachchange. See Figure 7.

NOTE: If the LOWERING and LEVELING speed adjustment isturned too far (more than 1/4 turn) the car will lock up in thedown direction. If this happens, run the car up on inspectionwhile an assistant in the machine room turns the LOWERINGand LEVELING speed adjustment a small amount out (CCW).

4. Tighten Locknut.

5. If the car does not stop, turn the DOWN STOP adjustmentOUT (ccw) until the stop is positive. See Figure 6.

6. Recheck the down leveling speed.

7. Repeat step 3, if necessary.

Final Adjustments

Up Section

• The Valve Adjustment Factory Presets are attached to theinside of the controller. These values ensure movement ofthe car and reduce Final Adjustment time.

Preparation

NOTE: Ensure the car is empty. Adjustments must be performed in the order given. These adjustments affect each other.

1. Place the controller on AUTOMATIC and send the car tothe lowest landing.

2. Run the car to the floor above and observe the levelinglone.

Start Adjustment

1. Adjust the UP START for a smooth but positive start. SeeFigure 8.

3. Adjust the up-slowdown for 3 to 4 inches (75 to 100mm) of leveling. See Figure 8.

Each time the up-slowdown is adjusted, you must recheck the

up-leveling speed.

4. Run the car on INSPECTION and adjust the UP LEVELINGspeed adjuster. Leveling speed should be 10-12 fpm. (3to 3.5 M/min) See Figure 8.

2. Check to be certain full up speed is reached on a onefloor-run. This may require you to make the up-start morepositive.

3. Slightly alter the SLOWDOWN ADJUSTMENT to achieveoptimum performance, if necessary.

Down Sections

Lowering Speed Adjustments

1. Place the car on AUTOMATIC.

-Up-Slowdown Softer2. Set the lowering speed with an empty car by turning the

LOWERING SPEED adjustment in 1/2 turn increments.Leave the flat end of the screw pointed 45 0 to the TankReturn Line after each adjustment. See NO TAG.

6. Check the leveling zone, (3 to 4 inches) (75 to 100 mm)and leveling speed, (10 to 12 fpm) (3 to 3.5 M/min).

7. Continue to adjustthe UP SLOWDOWN needle and the UPLEVELING adjuster until the desired performance isachieved.

Up Stop Adjustment

1. Adjust the UP STOP for a soft but positive stop. SeeFigure 8.

NOTE: The UP-STOP adjustment affects the UP-START andMUST be adjusted FIRST.
