Choosing a beneficiary for retirement benefits can affect distribution process
Three students honored with 2015 Project Future Scholarships
Taylor Suntken, pictured with Greater Iowa Business Development Specialist Linda Gibbs, is currently a freshman at DMACC in Ankeny. She is enrolled in the RN program and hopes to eventually earn a bachelors degree in nursing. Her hometown is Ames, Iowa.
ProjectFutureisascholarshipofferedbyGreaterIowa,whichawardsthree,$1,000scholarshipseachyeartoamemberoranimmedi-atefamilymember.Thisscholarshipisnamedinmemoryof RoxannHarmon,aformerGreaterIowabranchmanager,whowascommit-tedtothecreditunionmovement.Thisyear,threestudentswereawardedthescholarship.

Selectingbeneficiariesforretirementbenefitsisdifferentfromchoosingbeneficiariesforotherassetssuchaslifeinsurance.Withretirementbenefits,youneedtoknowtheimpactofincometaxandestatetaxlawsinordertoselecttherightbeneficiaries.Althoughtaxesshouldn’tbethesoledeterminingfactorinnamingyourbeneficiaries,ignoringtheimpactoftaxescouldleadyoutomakeanincorrectchoice. Inaddition,ifyou’remarried,beneficiarydesignationsmayaffectthesizeofminimumrequireddistributionstoyoufromyourIRAsandretirementplanswhileyou’realive.
Paying income tax on most retirement distributions Mostinheritedassetssuchasbankaccounts,stocks,andrealestatepasstoyourbeneficiarieswithoutincometaxbeingdue.How-ever,that’snotusuallythecasewith401(k)plansandIRAs. Beneficiariespayordinaryincometaxondistributionsfrompretax401(k)accountsandtraditionalIRAs.WithRothIRAsandRoth401(k)accounts,however,yourbeneficiariescanreceivethebenefitsfreefromincometaxifallofthetaxrequirementsaremet.Thatmeansyouneedtoconsidertheimpactofincometaxeswhendesignatingbeneficiariesforyour401(k)andIRAassets.
Naming or changing beneficiaries WhenyouopenupanIRAorbeginparticipatingina401(k),youaregivenaformtocompleteinordertonameyourbeneficiaries.Changesaremadeinthesameway--youcompleteanewbeneficiarydesignationform.Awillortrustdoesnotoverrideyourbeneficiarydesignationform.However,spousesmayhavespecialrightsunderfederalorstatelaw.

Carefully consider how much money you need. *3.04% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) paid on balances up to $20,000 with 0.15% APY paid on all amounts above $20,000 each cycle requirements are met. If requirements not met, 0.01% APY earned on total balance. APY subject to change; accurate as of 09/01/2015. Requirements: open and maintain a share (membership) account of $5, have at least 20 debit card purchases as well as one direct deposit of at least $100 or one bill pay transaction posted within one business calendar month and enrollment in eStatements.
