If you are new to the neighborhood, please come to the Lodge to complete an Association Registration Card and receive your New

Resident Packet and Directory.

Wallace Stevens wrote that “the summer night is like a perfectionof thought.” And I hope our residents have been taking fulladvantage of those nights - and days - as the season winds down. There are still several opportunities to take advantage of the richpageant of summer social activities Owl Creek has to offer -including the return of Comedy Night on August 23, and Music onthe Lawn on August 24 . And of course this September will see the8th annual Oktoberfest and our first warm weather one ever onSeptember 7th. Really, though, since Oktoberfest actually, starts inBavaria in early September, we are in keeping with tradition. Weexpect a large crowd this year. Oktoberfest registration form willbe sent by email once prices for dinner and steins are confirmed.

On a not so pleasant note, to be blunt we have had far too manyincidents this year where unauthorized individuals are using thepool. We are evaluating all options - some of which wouldinevitably result in more hassle and delay in signing in at the pool.As such, we are asking that folks please review the Owl Creek guestpolicy and discuss with your family so that we can keep any futuresteps as limited as possible.

That’s about it for now. Hope to see you at Oktoberfest. Until then,O’Zapft Is!

These person-centered programs and services enable our participants to becomemore independent members of our community.

It is heartwarming to see the smiles of our participants after theyhave reached a goal, or to watch them celebrate not only personalvictories, but those of longtime friends. It's gratifying to see theirdetermination and grit to strive to be the best person they can be.

To maintain our high standard of quality, the Center relies on thegenerosity of the community, donations and the support offundraisers. Participants are never turned away because of aninability to pay.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

PREVENT VEHICLE BREAK-INS

Look Doors and WindowsThis may seem obvious, but make sure all doors and windows arelocked and up. This includes the sunroof. Break ins can happenquickly and an unlocked door or cracked open window makes yourcar an easy target.Hide or Remove ValuablesIf you have valuable items that you must leave in your vehicle suchas a laptop, briefcase or shopping bags, keep them out-of-sight.Most thieves are opportunistic, so if they see something that isvaluable, they may try to smash the window and take it. Cover upvaluables with a blanket, leave them in the trunk or place themunder the seats.

Immediately contact the police if your car if broken in to or stolenso you can file a police report.

Summer is drawing to a close, and children are headed back toschool soon. We encourage you to remember and remind familymembers to use extra caution this time of year, keeping in mindthat pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and buses as well asother vehicles are sharing the road.

Let's all work together to keep our kiddos safe!

Set up a bedtime and wake-up routine in advance. If possible, it’s best to establish bedtimes and wake-up times twoweeks in advance of the start of school. By the time the first schoolbell rings, kids will already be on the right sleeping schedule and itwill be one less worry for your family.Get to know new teachers. There will be open houses, orientations, and other meet-and-greetoptions at the beginning of the school year, but none will give youthe chance to spend some quality time getting to know your kids’teachers. Try to find a few minutes before or after school toconnect one-on-one with the teachers. At the very least, send anintroductory email that includes how you can help during theschool year, however big or small.

8 Essential Back-to-School Tips for ParentsResource: SPARK

Plan healthy lunches and snacks. The better you plan out the meals in your home, the healthierchoices you will make for your kids. When you pack protein-richsnacks and lunches, balanced with fruits, vegetables, and otherwholesome items, you ensure that your children will have theenergy and brainpower to make it through their school days.Organize clothing.Of course you will need to donate or otherwise get rid of theclothing that your kids have outgrown, but you should also take thetime to carefully organize what is left. From there, decide whatitems you may need more of before school begins.Set up a staging area.Find a central spot to store everything related to school, includingbackpacks, upcoming outfits, and a dry erase calendar with familyschedules. Try to keep this area free of clutter and other non-schoolitems so that you can find what you need, when you need it—andquickly. Have the kids help you stock it with school-related items andkeep it clean and functional. Find some inspiration here.Update medical records. Most schools will let you know if your shot records are out of date, but why not go beyond that? Make sure teachers and administratorshave a complete list of any medical concerns regarding your kids, including allergies. You will also want to be sure that all emergencycontacts are up to date.Talk to your kids about bullying.Research shows that one in three kids experience bullying at somepoint in their school career—and in the increasingly digital world, the consequences can be extreme. Make sure your kids understandthe right way to treat their peers, and when to speak up if they seesomeone else being bullied. Also make sure they know when tocome to you if they feel they are being bullied.Ask your kids about their concerns. The start of school is exciting but can also bring some anxiety—especially when it comes to the unknown. Take a few minutes to askyour kids what they are most looking forward to during the schoolyear, and what things may be worrying them. By giving them aforum to express their concerns, you can help them work throughany worries in advance of school starting and clear up any issuesthat could lead to a bumpy start to the year.
