7` Super Bowl Party

zPresident’s MessageSean Ryan

Happy New Year! My hope is that you and your family had a wonderful holiday season! The annual holiday party at the Lodge was a great success with kids of all ages having a grand time. We have been experiencing a very moderate winter season thus far, sooner or later the cold of winter will once again have an extra tight grip on Owl Creek. When it does, we will be ready. Safety is our number one priority when it comes to snow removal and making sure our roads remain ice free.

2015 was a very good year and 2016 will be even better. I feel lucky to live in the greatest neighborhood in Louisville. Volunteers willing to help neighbors is what makes our community so special. In late January, we will celebrate our volunteers at our annual reception. It is always a fun night where the true spirit of Owl Creek shines through. Invitations will be mailed out the first week of January.

The Board will be reviewing next year’s preliminary budget which will be formally voted on at our February meeting. Your Board is charged with putting together a list of Association improvements to be considered in the coming year. The comprehensive plan contains both things which “need” to be done as well as things which would be nice to do if we can. I would ask each of you to consider recommending projects for the comprehensive list. I would love to hear your ideas. Please email me at [email protected] with any thoughts you might have. We will plan on sharing the 2016 project list with you in the March newsletter once it is approved by the Board so stay tuned.

The Owl Creek Board takes great pride in making sure our facilities are kept in great condition. We believe this is a major part of keeping property values high and inventory of homes in Owl Creek low. We continually strive to balance the needs/wants of the neighborhood while being fiscally responsible. Many initiatives whether they are major or minor are debated at great length before moving forward. We value input from all residents and would love to hear your ideas on new operations initiatives. One reason I love living in Owl Creek is because resident ideas are taken seriously by the Board of Directors.

If you cannot email me directly, it is as easy as stopping by the Lodge or coming to our monthly “resident open forum” at the Board meeting. We would love to have your input!

As always, if you have an idea or see something needing attention in the neighborhood, please let Kim or Barb at the Lodge know and we will add it to our list; call 244-2550 or email [email protected].

This year, Owl Creek replaced our 12 foot Christmas tree and the used one was donated to Maryhurst. They sent a thank you note and photo of the tree displayed in their center. We are so happy they were able to use the tree.

ATTENTION RUNNERS & JOGGERS:Please wear reflective clothing and/or a blinking light when using the streets in Owl Creek. We have received several reports of “close calls” where a driver suddenly sees a runner (wearing headphones) right in front of their vehicle. This is a dangerous situation which is worse when it is dark. Be smart, be safe.

THANK YOU from our Waste Management Workers

“Thanks for all the cards & gifts. They are greatly appreciated and it makes our job more worthwhile & enjoyable. This is one of our favorite neighborhoods.”

Matt Johnson & Alvin Hooper (trash), Jamie White & Damon Martin (recycling) and Jolly Rogers & Bradley Bischoff (yard waste).

HELPING HANDSBonnie Chiarot

Happy New Year!

As we remove our calendars for 2015 to make room for those for 2016; as we pack away our holiday decorations and lights to remain stored throughout most of the new year; I hope that we are also able to pull from our hearts and minds the thought of at least one person whose helping hands have made a difference in our lives recently. I know I can. This kind of difference was made in the lives of the family whose home across the street from the Lodge sadly caught fire last month. I am so grateful for the many, many calls offering help and the support and gifts offered to them from our Owl Creek community.

Marinela Reka said, “Helping others can be a cure; not just for those in need, but for yourself, as well”. Isn’t this so true? I was blessed to have parents who believed strongly in the importance of extending a helping hand, and I was doubly blessed to grow up in a large family where if we needed it (a meal, a bed, a car...) it was unceasingly provided by the kindness of friends or even strangers, and if we had it to spare, it was just as readily made available to those in need of it, be they friends or strangers. In this way, I was “cured” of many an illness that plagues our entitlement society!

If you are in need of a good home remedy, Helping Hands may be just the cure for what ails you. Whether you find yourself needing a helping hand or needing to offer one, please don’t hesitate to contact me, Bonnie Chiarot, at [email protected] or 693-8879, or you can call Kim at the Lodge.

In case you’re unfamiliar with Helping Hands, we provide meals temporarily for someone who is ill or injured, do our best to arrange for a ride to/from a doctor’s visit, watch a home during a funeral, and a variety of other volunteer services, all offered by your very own friends and neighbors. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2016! WELCOMING GROUP

Thank you from Neighbors after House Fire

Hello Neighbors,

First off, we are blessed. Although we had a tremendous gut punch when our house caught fire on December 3rd – we still feel blessed. We are all safe, including our dog Winston. The rest is just stuff. However, what we lost in the fire was quickly replaced with love, kindness and caring from family, friends and complete strangers. For this, my family is truly thankful and proud to call Owl Creek our home. Please accept our humble thank you and may God bless you all.

Happy New YearRodney, Lisa, Colton & Winston Thompson

Questions & Answers:

Edith Lovejoy Pierce had some great thoughts about the new year: “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” Ms. Pierce obviously was not talking about Owl Creek, but this same philosophy can have universal application.

And so, as we head into a new year of events and activities in the Creek, I would ask you to take some time for reflection. Ask yourself what events you regularly attend. Are those events great as is? Or are there certain ways they could be even better? If you have some thoughts on improving them, please consider becoming actively involved in planning and organization. Or perhaps there is a new event or activity you think would enhance our community. If so – and if you are willing to invest the time to try to make it a reality – please bring it to our attention. Keep in mind that two of our most successful social activities – Oktoberfest and Trivia Night – originated only 5 years ago but will likely still be around 25 years from now.

In other words, the new year does bring new opportunity. I firmly believe that our breadth and depth of activities really help differentiate Owl Creek from other neighborhoods. And as you consider where you might fit in those activities, we would ask you to keep in mind that they are all volunteer-dependent. For example, while Oktoberfest now draws crowds of several hundred people, it is still almost entirely reliant upon volunteers. As is the Campout. And Trivia Night. And the Halloween Party. And the Easter Egg Hunt.

So, after you recover from New Year’s Eve, take a look at the newsletter and the upcoming activities, think over the last year and which ones you attended, and give some thought as to where you might find some opportunities. I can virtually guarantee that you will have a fun time in the process and will almost certainly make new friends.

Well, that’s about it for now. Hope to see you at Comedy Night or the Super Bowl Party. In the meantime, give us a shout if you have something social on your mind and keep in mind the words of Scottish author Walter Scott: “Each age has deemed the new-born year the fittest time for festal cheer.”

Bulk Items: Do we need to call Waste Management (WM) before we set a bulk item out for pick-up? If so, what is the number?

Answer: WM will pick up a bulk item on our regular trash days – Mon & Thurs. You can call them at 966-0117 to give them advance notice; but it isn’t a requirement.

Christmas Trees: Is there a special tree pickup in the community?

Answer: Christmas trees will be picked up by WM with other yard waste on Monday mornings.

Annual Assessment: We are considering a home in Owl Creek. What are the homeowner association fees? What does the fee cover?

Thanks to our Recycling Workers for their keen observation and quick thinking. They noticed smoke coming from the corner of the Thompson’s home and immediately called 9-1-1 and notified the Lodge. It didn’t take long for flames to shoot out and heavy black smoke to fill the air. Fortunately, the firemen rescued the little dog quickly and the owners said they only lost about 5% of their personal items. However, the house had severe water damage and the family is displaced for many months during renovation. The fire investigators have determined the cause was a short in the attic fan.

Ho Ho Ho-liday at the LodgeWhat a beautiful evening we had for our family Christmas party this year. Over 150 residents and their families were in attendance. The weather was warm and made for a great evening for our carriage rides with Jim and his horse, Pee Wee. The children had fun being entertained by Santa and Mrs. Claus, receiving gifts and crafting a special holiday ornament. The holiday music was once again provided by our own resident, Marla Kay Kosnik, and was enjoyed by all. Thank you to our families for bringing your delicious cookies to share.

A very special THANK YOU to our resident volunteers/helpers for the night: Laurie Atwell, Leslie and Bradley Dearing, Julie Avery, Jennifer Nickel, John Bartholomai, Sarah Bartholomai, Katie Buckler, Callie Hamm, Rebecca Goldberg and Hannah Avery.

“Volunteers are the heart of the community”

Quote: The Christmas party was a lot of fun! Pee Wee gave us a great ride around the block. Santa & Mrs. Claus were very kind to our shy little guy. Thanks for putting on such an amazing event! (Meredith Cull, Grey Owl Ct)

SAFETY TIPSChief Jeffrey J. Riddle

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas & a Safe New Year.

The following are a few safety tips for winter.

Generators:If you use a portable generator when the electricity is out, make sure it is located at least 5 feet from the house and away from open windows. Never refuel the generator while it is running and always allow the generator to cool for at least 10 minutes before refueling.

Have a battery operated carbon monoxide detector in the house whenever the generator is in operation.

Make sure the extension cords are rated to carry what you are running. Use caution not to pinch or smash extension cords when running these cords through doors or windows.

If you are planning to store extra fuel in the garage or in a shed, make sure you have the proper approved containers. I recommend a metal can with a safety lid.

If you use candles, never leave them unattended, especially if you have pets.

Space Heaters:Do not store anything or set a space heater within 36 inches of combustibles.

Make sure the heater has a safety feature that will shut it off if it is overturned.

Never use a space heater in an area where gasoline is stored

Other tips: Never use a space heater or a droplight under the hood of a car to keep the motor warm.

Make sure you store kerosene and gasoline in the proper colored containers. Red is for Gas; Blue is for Kerosene.

Be sure to check your furnace filters at least every 30 days. The District will respond to several reports of odor of smoke over the next few months. Most of these will be caused by overheated fan motors on the furnace. Not changing or cleaning your filters can cause the fan motor to overheat and produce a smell or even some smoke in the house.

Carbon Monoxide is a toxic gas, but, being colorless, odorless, tasteless and non-irritating, it is very hard to detect. Carbon Monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion of

gasoline, natural gas and propane or improper ventilation of these gases. Symptoms may include headaches and flu like effects; larger exposures can lead to significant toxicity of the central nervous system (i.e. trouble keeping your balance or walking). Prolonged exposure can even cause death. There is only one way to detect carbon monoxide and that is with a UL listed detector. There are several of these available to choose from at your local retail stores. I personally like the electric with battery backup that has a digital read out.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please contact us at 502-245-7555

IMPORTANT REMINDERResidents are responsible for keeping the storm drain clear which are located in the street in front of their home. Please remove leaves and trash so the drainage system stays clear and flowing.

“We decided to go with Holdfast based on a friend's recommendation and our own due diligence. His quote come in thousands less than his competitors and his completion timeframe was shorter by 2+ weeks. We could not be happier with our new kitchen! His experience and work ethic kept the project on task, and we greatly relied on his professional opinion since this was our first major project. Because of how enjoyable he was to work with and how quickly he responds to our needs, I can’t wait to use his services again for our future projects!” -- L. Hughes, Owl Creek Resident
