Yes, it’s true. As many have pointed out, there are a lot of simi-larities between the Harry Potter movies and Lemony Snicket’s ASeries of Unfortunate Events. Both are based on phenomenally

popular kids’ books, both revolve around orphans fending off relatives who don’t have their best interests at heart and both takeplace in fantastical, gothic worlds.

But there are also some monumental differences, the most interesting of which is control.

Author J.K. Rowling (who last year becamericher than the Queen) presided over the HarryPotter adaptations with an inky fist. The result isthat the movies (especially the first one) becamenote-for-note copies of the books, delightingpurists but leaving others lamenting a lack ofspontaneity. In contrast, the scribe behind theLemony Snicket books, nearly anonymousDaniel Handler, was almost absent from thefilmmaking process, and quite willingly so. Ininterviews, Handler has described his astonish-ment at walking onto the film’s set and seeing

details he’d never even imagined — headlines on prop newspapers, the oh-so precise level of leaf decomposition…

But loyal readers of the Lemony Snicket series will notice biggerchanges than simply the visual details. The casting of improv kingJim Carrey as the orphans’ gold-digging uncle, Count Olaf, prettymuch ensured that the character would stray from the printed page.In “Method to his Madness,” page 34, Carrey describes how entirecharacters (Olaf is a master of transformation who appears undermany guises) changed from their book versions, simply becauseCarrey felt like a different person once he was in costume. Will thisstrategy work as well as Rowling’s? That’s to be decided by the kiddiesand all those crisp dollar bills they find under the Christmas tree.

Source material is also an interesting topic with this month’scaper sequel Ocean’s Twelve. Three years ago, Steven Soderbergh’sremake of the 1960 Rat Pack flick Ocean’s Eleven was a slicker-than-oil delight for both fans and critics. So what happens now that we’verun out of original script? There was no Rat Pack sequel, after all.Matt Damon, who resumes his role as pickpocket Linus Caldwell, talks about evolving beyond the Pack in “Reunited and it Feels soGood,” page 24.

Owen Wilson’s latest, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, is an unconventional comedy about a team of oceanographers hunting aparticularly nasty shark. The fact that it was written and directed by one of today’s cleverest filmmakers, Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums), and stars adorable curmudgeon Bill Murray, makes it little surprise that this is the film the hip kids are anxiousto see this holiday season. In our Q&A session with Wilson, “Out to Sea,” page 18,the likable Texan reveals why it seemed totake forever to get this film made.

And finally, we have an interview withKate Bosworth, who transformed herselfinto goody two-shoes Hollywood iconSandra Dee for this month’s Bobby Darinbio-pic Beyond the Sea. Read “Look at Me, I’mSandra Dee,” page 30, for the full scoop.

Of the 20 films Owen Wilson has made, it’s pretty safe tosay that the best are the ones he’s done with his friend,writer/director Wes Anderson — Bottle Rocket, Rushmore

and The Royal Tenenbaums. That bodes well for the fourthfilm from the quirky duo, this month’s The Life Aquatic withSteve Zissou.

“In the movie business, when you can find someone whoshares the same artistic sensibilities as you do and is someoneyou really, really trust, you find the time to do projects withthem,” says Wilson. The Dallas, Texas, native is looking com-fortable in jeans, a white T-shirt and a “Strickland Propane”baseball cap courtesy of having done an episode of King of theHill. The difference with this film is that, unlike the firstthree, Wilson didn’t co-write The Life Aquatic with his oldfriend from the University of Texas. This time, Anderson’swriting partner was Noah Baumbach (Kicking and Screaming).

“Doing a movie with someone who is on the same wavelength is so much more fun and exciting,” Wilson says.“And you always know they’re going to make a great film thatyou’ll always be proud to say you were a part of. That’s whywhen Wes asked me if I just wanted to act in The Life Aquatic,I was like, ‘Sure, what do I play, where do you need me andwhen?’”

Shot in Italy, the stylish comedy follows Steve Zissou (BillMurray), an eccentric oceanographer and documentary film-maker on a quest to capture the ferocious “jaguar shark” whichdevoured a member of his team. But Zissou has problemsbeyond the elusive shark. In addition to a lack of funding, hehas to fight off pirates, deal with a journalist who’s writing hisprofile (Cate Blanchett), and get to know a new member ofTeam Zissou who just might be his long-lost son (Wilson).

“It’s really outrageous, I think it’s one of the best films Weshas ever made,” says Wilson. “And Bill Murray is amazing. Heis one of the greatest actors that we have in Hollywood. Ifpeople don’t realize it by the work he’s done in the past, they’ll know it now. If Bill doesn’t get a nomination for hiswork in this then there simply is no justice in the world. There, I said it.”

Is it true the shoot went on several months longer than it was supposed to?“I’m not really sure how long we were scheduled to be thereor if we were there longer than we were supposed to be, but, personally, it did feel like we were in Italy for an eternity.Filming just went on and on and on [laughs].”

Why do you think that was?“When you’re in a foreign country, not all that familiar withthe language and not used to the daily way of life there, everyday feels like it’s 48 hours long.”

There were rumours that Bill Murray held up the shoot because hewasn’t happy with his dailies. In fact, didn’t he fire his agent duringfilming?“Oh, I don’t know anything about that, you’d have to ask Billabout that, if you’re brave enough [laughs]. Look, you haveto realize that everyone working on the film is a perfectionist.Wes has always been that way, and he surrounds himself withcrew people and actors who want things perfect. And Irespect that because it only makes the film the best it can be.Of course, perfectionism can be time-consuming. And thenthere’s Bill, who is an absolutely lovable madman, who can be

kind of unpredictable, if you know what I mean. More thananything, I think that it went on so long because we filmed allaround Rome, and with the Italian crews there’s just sort of adifferent work ethic. It’s not good or bad, it’s just differentthan what we’re used to in Hollywood.”

Wasn’t there a danger that you weren’t going to be able to make thefilm because you needed special diving certification?“I wish it was that simple, but it was more like a real pain inthe butt. It was one of those things — like in practically everymovie — where something comes up that sounds like this bigcrisis and, in actuality, it really wasn’t. Before we started filming, everyone was like, ‘Oh, you need to go over to Italy and yougotta go and do all this diving. You’re going to have to go getcertified in Italy because you can’t be certified in America —it won’t work there.’ And then you go over there, go throughall the training and you hardly do any diving. So it was almostuseless for me to go through all of it.”

Until recently, everything about the film — plot, cast, locations —was secret. Why did Wes Anderson feel the need to keep everythingunder wraps?“I wasn’t aware that it ever was. Really? I didn’t know that[pauses]…. That just sounds like another urban legend perpetuated by the internet. A lot of guys have nothing to dobut spend their days on the internet making up stories aboutfuture movies and celebrities. Sounds like an exciting life, doesn’t it?”

Did Wes Anderson write the film specifically for you and Bill Murray?“Around the time I was doing I Spy, Wes was writing some-thing with Bill Murray and I in mind. He was thinking aboutus doing a movie where it would be kind of like a father-sontype thing, and funny, of course. So, over the years, it evolvedinto The Life Aquatic. And it’s a pretty unique idea.”

Are you amazed how successful you’ve become since the 1996release of your first film, Bottle Rocket?“Yeah, it’s kind of amazing because we came out to work onBottle Rocket, which did not get a wildly enthusiastic reception

from audiences. So the idea that Luke [Owen’s brother andco-star in Bottle Rocket] and Wes and everyone have been ableto do pretty well is pretty amazing, to come off that smallmovie. What helped was that we had some supporters of Bottle Rocket in Hollywood. Martin Scorsese put it on his Top10 list, which was kind of amazing for such a small movie thatno one saw. It was embraced by some big people inHollywood, and I guess that kind of helped.”

Do you think you’ve developed an Owen Wilson screen persona — acool, but not superperfect kind of guy?“I’m not sure what my persona is. I know that I’m probablymore comfortable giving a character vulnerability or sometype of insecurity. That’s easier for me to relate to.”

You’ve done everything from comedies to action pics. What is themain thing you look for in a script?“It’s really just kind of trying to get a feel for who’s involvedand what the basic story is and if people are real open to collaborating. In the case of a movie like I Spy, I was workingin Slovakia on Behind Enemy Lines and they called to say EddieMurphy was going to do this movie. And, growing up, EddieMurphy was a huge star to me, so to be able to work withEddie was more important to me than the script. More thanthe script, the idea that I’d get a chance to work with GeneHackman in Behind Enemy Lines… That’s kind of how it goes.It may not be the smartest way to choose your projects, because some aren’t what you had hoped for, but I’m gettingto live out more of my dreams.”

Would you do a film without any comedy in it?“I think every film is a comedy in some way. I mean, RagingBull has some really funny stuff in it, between the brothers, and it comes from their insecurities. If something feels reallyreal, sometimes I think that’s actually funnier than some-thing that’s a big type of joke.”

What’s the biggest drawback of fame?“I would say, with like Eddie and Bruce Willis, that it becomesreally difficult to just walk around without it becoming a bigscene.”

Are you starting to feel that at all?“No, not really. Not where people are going crazy and there’sa swarm of people.”

Does that possibility frighten you?“Yeah, but I guess that would be frightening to anyone.Although both those guys seem pretty happy, so I guess theyfind a way to deal with it. I mean, is it the end of the world ifyou can’t walk around the Beverly Center?”

Does your family have any regular Christmas traditions?“Yeah, we do. We have a football game called ‘The SnowBowl,’ even though it never really snows in Dallas [laughs].It’s kind of family and friends playing football in the frontyard, pretending there’s snow all around. I guess my wholefamily is full of actors. At least I know where that acting genecomes from.”

After pulling off the slick, superfun Ocean’s Eleven, MATT DAMON and the rest of the cast were only toohappy to reteam for the sequel, Ocean’s Twelve. Damon discusses the joys of sharing the workload with the likesof George Clooney and Brad Pitt I BY BOB THOMPSON

If it’s true that Matt Damon hasusurped the Mr. Nice Guy crownfrom Tom Hanks, you’d never know

it by Damon’s reaction to the specula-tion. Instead of bashfully denying it, heflashes one of those gosh-darn grins, takes a drag off his American Spirit cigarette in a posh Beverly Hills hotelsuite, then addresses the subject inmock anger, complaining that he isfrustrated by this “good guy” tag, some-thing he’s had to live with first as aBoston teen, then a Harvard Universityalmost graduate, then an actor.

Truth is, Damon’s reputation on setand off has always been first-rate. “And Iam so sick of living up to me,” he sayscontinuing his joke, before adding in amore serious tone: “The fact is it takes alot less effort to be friendly and kindthan to be mean and nasty.”

A long list of actors and actressesshould make note of that assessment.

Mind you, Damon has had a greatdeal to be friendly and kind about thesedays. After a sophomore slump with astring of under-performing films in thelate 1990s, he’s back on track in 2004with the hit summer sequel The BourneSupremacy and this month’s sure-thingbox-office winner Ocean’s Twelve, thefollow up to 2001’s Ocean’s Eleven, whichearned $447-million (U.S.) worldwide.

Unlike The Bourne Supremacy, Ocean’sTwelve didn’t drive Damon crazy withthe anxiety of having to carry a film. “Itfeels good to know there is enough fire-power that you don’t have to worryabout that kind of thing,” he says, refer-ring to Ocean’s Twelve’s abundant A-listtalent led by director Steven Soderberghand producer George Clooney, whoalso plays title character Danny Ocean.“And I’m guessing here, but it must feeljust as good for Julia [Roberts] andBrad [Pitt], too. You know, all thoseactors who are accustomed to a giantworkload on a film, and the huge pres-sure of carrying it on their shoulders.”

As for Clooney and Soderbergh?“That’s their problem,” says Damon, laughing at his own joke.

Actually, Ocean’s Twelve doesn’t seemto have a problem at all. By all accountsthe movie is an even more exotic andintriguing caper flick this time aroundas the gang sets its sights on simultaneousheists in three European locations.

Set three years after Ocean’s Eleven’shigh-tech, high-stakes Las Vegas job,the second in the series (there are t t

interview |already rumours of a third) has DannyOcean organizing another big scoreand reuniting the old gang of cons andcrooks, including Damon, Roberts, Pitt,Bernie Mac and Don Cheadle, with theaddition of Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The team then jets to Amsterdam,Rome and Paris to pull off three jobs atonce. Naturally, complications developwhen the vengeful Las Vegas casinoowner (Andy Garcia) from the first filmis hot on their trail.

So let’s see; beautiful settings, a cast ofactors who like each other and a likelybig-money hit for all concerned. Not surprisingly, arm twisting was not neces-sary in re-signing the actors. “No, no, notrequired. In fact, it was similar to lasttime,” says Damon, taking another dragoff his cigarette. “Steven says ‘jump’ tome, and I just say, ‘How high?’”

Not that Damon didn’t see the down-side of doing a sequel to a heist remake. He agrees there isn’t the same sort ofanticipation there was with the first film,or, as he puts it, “will they or won’t theybe able to pull off the magic of the RatPack?,” referring to Frank Sinatra’s crewand their 1960 original. “But I think youfeel instantly secure when you’re dealingwith someone like Steven, who franklywould not get involved if he didn’t thinkhe could bring it.”

Besides, Damon has discovered thehard way that it’s always a roll of thedice. Four years ago, he was wonderingif he’d been cursed by bad luck and badtiming after Billy Bob Thornton’s All thePretty Horses and Robert Redford’s The Legend of Bagger Vance failed miser-ably with critics and at the box office.

“I hadn’t been offered a movie in ayear because Bagger Vance had come outand bombed and All The Pretty Horsesbombed, and funny enough the word onThe Bourne Identity, before its release, wasthat it was going to tank too,” he says. “SoI was all of a sudden faceless and name-less, and no one really called and gaveme any job offers for some time.”

When The Bourne Identity did well,Damon was back on track, but he nowknows that acting in the movies “is thiskind of tenuous thing.”

Sensible. Analytical. Perceptive. Andthat’s not surprising.

He was born Matthew Paige Damonon October 8, 1970, in the Cambridgearea of Boston, Mass. His dad, Kent, wasan investment banker and tax consult-ant, his mother, Nancy Carlsson-Paige,

a professor of early education at LesleyCollege. When he was two, his parentsdivorced and he moved, with Nancy, tonearby Cambridge.

Along with pal Ben Affleck, Damondecided to pursue acting, although heseemed to make his mark as the moreserious of the two, initially scoring aone-line role in 1988’s Mystic Pizza withJulia Roberts. He didn’t commandmuch attention, however, until hiscameo in 1996’s Courage Under Fireopposite Denzel Washington. By thenboth Affleck and Damon were frustratedwith their lack of work, and, in the oft-told tale, wrote a script for themselveswith Damon in the lead and Afflecksupporting in 1997’s Good Will Hunting. The film earned the pair an AcademyAward for Best Original Screenplay andDamon a Best Actor nomination.

But it wasn’t until The Bourne Identitythat Damon started living up to hisnext-big-thing billing.

“It’s basically three things that I lookfor; a good script, a good director and agood role,” he says, then smiles and takesa pull on a newly lit cigarette. “Usually,I’ll settle for any two of those, and the combination of all three is really hard to come by. So my philosophy hasn’tchanged. Whatever success or failuresthat I’ve had, I’m really happy and reallyproud of what I’ve done.”

On the other hand, Damon doeshave some regrets. For instance, datingother actors — although he seems tohave learned his lesson and has swornoff colleagues after dating MinnieDriver, his Good Will Hunting co-star,then Winona Ryder for nearly threeyears. He’s now dating civillian LucianaBarroso, an interior designer and singlemother of a young daughter.

Next up for Damon is Syriana, a filmby Steve Gaghan, who wrote Traffic forSoderbergh. “It’s similar to Traffic in itsstructure, like four or five intersectingstories that revolve around a topic,” saysDamon.

The film is currently shooting in theUnited Arab Emirates, which meansDamon is on the road again.

“That is really the biggest sacrifice,”he says. “Maintaining relationships andfriendships can be done, but it justtakes a lot of work, almost as much asmaking a movie.”

Bob Thompson is a movie writer with theNational Post.

WHAT COULD HAVE BEENFOR MATT DAMON…

• Auditioned for, but didn’t get, therole of the infatuated, murderousteen in Nicole Kidman’s 1995breakthrough To Die For. The partwent to Joaquin Phoenix instead, who turned in one of his finestcreepy performances.

• Turned down Leonardo DiCaprio’srole in the 1995 Sharon Stonestinker The Quick and the Dead. AllDiCaprio got out of the film was areputation as a bad kisser, courtesyof Stone who shared an on-screensnog with the heartthrob.

• Auditioned for, but didn’t get, therole of altar-boy-turned-murdererAaron Stampler in 1996’s PrimalFear. Edward Norton got the part, and an Oscar nomination.

• Turned down Jim Carrey’s role in2001’s The Majestic. Hard to saywhether this was a good move. Thesappy nostalgia piece didn’t domuch for critics, but it would havegiven Damon the most screen-timehe’d had to date.

• Stole the role of pickpocket LinusCaldwell in Ocean’s Eleven(2001) from Mark Wahlberg whenWahlberg dropped out to do The Planet of the Apes. Definitelyone the best bits of luck inDamon’s career, and worst movesfor Wahlberg.

The first thing you notice when youmeet Kate Bosworth is her eyes. It’s not that they’re especially

beautiful — they are quite nice, butthat’s besides the point. It’s that they’retwo different colours. The left one isblue, and the right one hazel.

It’s also something you notice in hernew movie Beyond the Sea, the BobbyDarin bio-pic in which Bosworth playsDarin’s wife, Sandra Dee. Not only doyou notice her eyes because they’re sounusual, but also because they’re sounlike Dee’s, which are dark brown.

That fickle relationship to reality typifies the approach both Bosworthand Kevin Spacey — who plays Darin, directed and spent years getting the filmproduced — took to making the movie.

“I asked Kevin, ‘Should I wear darkcontacts?’ He’s like, ‘Then it’s going tolook like you’re trying to play SandraDee….’ So we left enough of ourselvesin so that people aren’t ‘Oh, that’s KateBosworth trying to play Sandra Dee.She’s wearing contacts and a wig,’”explains Bosworth in an interview during the Toronto International FilmFestival. The teeny-tiny 21-year-old starof Blue Crush and Win a Date with TadHamilton is looking positively demurein a gauzy white dress.

“You know, I started watching someof her films, and I started getting sofreaked out that I was going to mimicher, impersonation versus perform-ance. She always speaks like this, veryclipped,” continues the Los Angelesnative, putting a point at the end ofeach word. “But then I was getting socaught up in it that I started losing theimportance of it.”

And truth be told, Bosworth’s histori-cally incorrect eye colour pales in comparison to the liberties Spacey tookwith his character. For those who don’tknow Darin’s story, the crooner bestknown for his late 1950s, early 1960srenditions of “Mack the Knife,” “SplishSplash” and “Beyond the Sea” died ofheart failure when he was just 37.Spacey, who plays Darin from his early20s on, turned 45 this past July.

But the issue of Spacey’s age is quicklydealt with in the film.

As Beyond the Sea opens, Bobby Darinis making a movie about his own life. However, we don’t know this until thefilming comes to a sudden halt as Darinis, yet again, not satisfied with his ownperformance while filming a concert

scene. As the singer rushes off the stagehe’s followed by his brother-in-law (BobHoskins) and a reporter, the latter ofwhom starts barking questions in thatway reporters only do in movies thattake place decades ago.

“Do you really think he can be objec-tive about his own life? He’s too old toplay the part,” balks the journalist, as ifspeaking for everyone who has qualmsabout Spacey playing the role, even ifhe does look a lot like Darin, and doesa fine job of singing his own songs.

“He was born to play the part and youknow it,” barks Hoskins’ character, andthe case is closed. For Spacey, anyway.

The film jumps back and forththrough Darin’s life, the first key plotpoint comes when, as a young boy,Bobby contracts rheumatic fever whichseverely scars his heart. His doctor sayshe won’t live past 15, a prognosis thatjust makes Bobby more determined topack as much life as possible in while hecan. By his mid-20s Darin is a star, bothon the charts and the big screen, and at24 he meets virginal, 16-year-old SandraDee on the Rome set of their 1961 movieCome September. They’re married thatsame year.

One of the funniest, and most touch-ing, moments in the film comes ontheir wedding night when Dee breaksdown in tears at the thought of havingsex. Darin charges into the matrimonialbedroom wielding a sword which he

then lays down between them on thebed explaining that he will never crossit until she does. It’s one of those pointsin the movie where you wonder, “Okay, how much of this really happened?”

“Oh, it totally happened,” insistsBosworth, explaining that many of themore personal moments were takenfrom the book Dream Lovers, written byDarin and Dee’s son, Dodd. “She mayhave been more open with him thanwith anyone else,” muses Bosworth.

There was also a lot of informationBosworth got from doing research thatnever made it into the film, like the reason why Dee may have been so

uncomfortable on her wedding night.“There had been a question of sexual

abuse earlier in her life and that’swhere I took [my performance] from. Imean, it would be such a shock to awoman, she was so blocked off, every-thing in her shut down. And also shewas naive to the point where when shewas pregnant with Dodd she was in thedoctor’s office and she was like, ‘So,what happens?’ And the doctor’s like,‘What do you mean?’ And she’s like,‘What’s giving birth?’ Things like that, repeated examples where it’s shocking.”

Although, to this day, Sandra Dee stillrepresents the iconic Hollywood imageof a 1950s goody-goody, her career wasactually quite short-lived. Perhaps bestknown for playing a young surfer-girl in the 1959 comedy Gidget, Dee’s style

quickly went out of style as the 1960sopened audiences up to sexier andmore experimental performances. Shedid some TV work in the ’70s includinga spot on Fantasy Island, virtually gaveup acting in the early ’80s, and now livesa relatively quiet life in Beverly Hills.

And if Beyond the Sea is to be believed, even Darin resented being shackled toDee’s saccharine image — repeatedlyinferring that being married to Gidgetwasn’t helping his career. Eventually, the competition between these two veryyoung, very famous people was one ofthe things that broke them apart. Theydivorced in 1967, six years beforeDarin’s death.

By the time Bosworth started filmingBeyond the Sea in Germany last winter(it’s a Germany/U.K. co-production asSpacey couldn’t raise the funds in theU.S.), Bosworth had already been dating 27-year-old Lord of the Rings starOrlando Bloom for several months.

The parallels seem obvious — bothcouples involve two young actors withskyrocketing careers and a noticeableage difference between them. ButBosworth, who doesn’t particularly liketalking to the press about her beau, saysshe did not draw on her own relation-ship one little bit. “I mean, playing acharacter is, like, so different than anything in my own life,” she says.

Nor did she learn anything about theperils of jealousy from Darin and Dee’srelationship that she could apply to herown. “It’s just, like, I was already so crystal clear on how I wanted to dealwith anything that’s important to me inmy own life,” she insists.

Bosworth is currently trying to decidewhether her “own life” will include adegree from Princeton. That’s right, despite all the “likes” and “totallys” thatBosworth manages to squeeze into conversation, this young actor is nodummy. She was accepted at the IvyLeague university several years ago butdeferred enrolment twice while her acting career took off.

And she’s still not sure Princeton isfor her. “I really struggled with itbecause I love to learn, but I just couldn’t see myself sitting in a class-room full-time at this point in my life.”

Even the ivory tower officials in theadmissions office apparently can’t blameher. “They said, ‘Well, whenever youthink you might want to come, just giveus a call.’”

If the Harry Potter movies taughtHollywood producers anything, it’sthe lucrative lesson that if children

like to read, they like to see theirfavourite literary characters brought tolife on the big screen even more.

So it’s not at all surprising that LemonySnicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events —the series that finally booted Harry Potterfrom the New York Times children’s best-seller list — lands in theatres just in timefor Christmas break.

For the parents in the crowd, a handful

of Hollywood’s finest have been cast inthe adult roles — Meryl Streep as AuntJosephine, Jude Law as narratorLemony Snicket and Canadian-bornJim Carrey as Count Olaf, the villainousuncle of 14-year-old Violet, 12-year-oldKlaus and toddler Sunny, also known as the Baudelaire orphans. After the children’s parents die in a terrible fire,Count Olaf, a failed actor, tries to scamthe kids out of their considerable inher-itance by creating bizarre alter-egos and using elaborate disguises. Carrey,

the father of a 17-year-old daughter, says he took the role because he likedthe way the script entertained youngsterswithout being preachy.

“It was such a different way to tell achildren’s story, it didn’t talk down tothem or treat them as if they didn’t havea brain — it’s very original,” Carrey sayswhile sipping hot tea in his hotel roomon a chilly New York morning. The 42-year-old is dressed to keep warm in abig sweater, jeans and boots. “It’s a reallyintelligent and irreverent movie, and I

cover | story |knew I would have so much fun doingit…. It was an opportunity for me toshow up as this crazed thespian. He’s anevil thespian, which is redundant, if youthink about it.”

Law, who has three kids of his own,has a firm grasp on why book-to-screentransformations work so well for thepeanut butter sandwich demographic.

“To kids, there’s something magicalabout being able to go to a movie theatre to see and hear a part of theirimagination jump off the page and startto walk and talk,” Law said at the New York junket for Sky Captain and theWorld of Tomorrow. “In a lot of ways, it’slike some of their dreams have cometrue, especially if they’re big fans of thebooks or they are stories which theirmom or dad read to them at night. Itmakes them feel really special.”

The screenplay penned by RobertGordon (Men in Black II) uses storylinesfrom the first three books (there arenow 11) — The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room and The Wide Window, all of which were written by the mysteri-ous Lemony Snicket, a.k.a. writer DanielHandler. Brad Silberling (MoonlightMile, Casper) directed the film.

By the time shooting began, Carreywas well-versed in everything Snicket.“Brad asked me to read all the booksand I did, and I thought it was going tobe a real opportunity to experiment, improvise and have fun just throwingon disguises and going, ‘Who are thesecharacters,’” recalls Carrey.

“We just had fun and played aroundwith the Count’s own characters. Forinstance, there was a character namedStephano who was supposed to have anItalian accent and act a certain way. Butwhen they put this different-lookingwig on me in the makeup chair, like fiveminutes before they were going to testthis character, I said, ‘It’s not that guyanymore,’” Carrey explains. “Then theyput this mustache on, but it had beenaltered in a way, and I said, ‘It’s not theguy anymore.’ So Brad Silberling cameinto the trailer said, ‘Well, what do youmean? Who is it? Where’s Stephano?’And I just started speaking like the guythat belonged to the hair and that’swhere the character came from.Literally five minutes before we wentout to start filming, the character justkind of blossomed.”

As co-star Streep will attest, the rolewas perfectly suited to Carrey’s uncanny

powers of transformation. “Jim wasdivine, he’s such an incredible actor,”said Streep while out promoting The Manchurian Candidate earlier thisyear. “It was really fun working withhim. I had a couple of scenes with Jim,and we have a full-blown romantic relationship. Working with Jim was likewatching a chameleon. He could turninto any kind of character at amoment’s notice.”

Born in Newmarket, Ontario, theyoungest of Percy and KathleenCarrey’s four children, Jim’s own child-hood memories are of spending longwinter days playing hockey in the middle of the street with other kidsfrom the neighbourhood.

“Like every young Canadian boy, wehad fantasies of either wanting to be arock star, a hockey idol or on TV. Sincewe thought the Americans had theupper hand with movies, I don’t thinkany of us ever thought about becomingmovie stars,” Carrey recalls with alaugh. “I loved playing hockey. It’s sucha great game. But as I got older, I real-ized I was too tall [6’2”] and lanky forit. I simply didn’t have the big, hunkyhockey player body that I would needto make it into the pros. So I kind ofmarked ‘hockey idol’ off my list. Andsince I sounded like [Rush singer]Geddy Lee with his vocal cords tornout, I figured becoming a rock star wasout of the question too.”

Instead, Carrey concentrated onmaking people laugh. And by the timehis family moved to the Toronto suburbof Scarborough, it was obvious to every-one, including his junior high teacherswho let him do standup routines at theend of class, that he was a natural-borncomedian.

But his dream to become a profes-sional funnyman was put on hold whenhis family hit hard times and Jim wasforced to drop out of high school, work in a tire factory and, for a stretchof time, live with his family in aVolkswagen van.

“We might have been poor, but myfamily and I were always there for eachother,” he recalls. “And my family wasalways behind my desire to become acomic. They were my biggest cheer-leaders. So I had to work hard to makeit happen.”

After years of practice, Jim perfectedhis standup skills, bid farewell to hisfamily and moved to Los Angeles. Fate

STILL OUR JIM?Americans can’t eat ketchup chips andcan’t order a double-double from TimHortons, but they can now call Jim Carreyone of their own. On October 7th Carreyofficially became a U.S citizen, completinga process he began in December of 2001.

“This country has helped define me andmake my dreams come true,” he said ofthe U.S. in an official statement. But fearnot, the hockey-loving lad from Scarborough,Ont., is keeping his Canuck status, therebygiving him dual Canadian/American citizenship.

“I have no intention of giving up myCanadian heritage, and all those wholoved and supported me,” said Carrey.“My upbringing in Canada made me theperson I am. I will always be proud to bea Canadian.”

cover | story |would lend a hand in Carrey’s risewhen the late Rodney Dangerfieldcaught his act at the famous WestHollywood club The Comedy Store.Dangerfield was so impressed with theyoung Canadian, he asked him to be theopening act on his upcoming U.S. tour.

Once back in L.A., Carrey landedstints on the sitcom The Duck Factory and, more importantly, the groundbreakingvariety show In Living Color. The silly, butvery funny, 1994 comedy Ace Ventura: PetDetective made Carrey an A-list star, andin 1996 he became the first actor to earn$20-million for a single film when he did so for the dark Ben Stiller-directed comedy The Cable Guy.

In 1998 Carrey branched out with alight-but-dramatic role in The TrumanShow, a clever film about a guy who, unbeknownst to him, has been the star ofa top-rated TV show since birth. Manythought Carrey was cheated when hedidn’t get an Oscar nomination for hisperformance, and Carrey himself saidthat Academy members were too narrow-minded for not giving comedicroles the same weight as dramatic ones.So when his next role saw him virtuallytransform into troubled performance

artist Andy Kaufman for 1999’s Man onthe Moon, it was widely believed this wasCarrey’s stab at that elusive nomination.Once again, he was ignored by theAcademy.

“I certainly don’t think there’s somekind of organized conspiracy againstme,” Carrey says with a laugh. “TheAcademy votes on what they see.Whatever is more publicized are themovies they watch. I don’t think there’san accumulation of Academy voterswho sit around and talk about whatthey are going to do with Jim Carrey. They’re not going, ‘Well, maybe 10years down the road we will give it tohim, but not now.’

“I’ll win when it’s time. Sure, I’d liketo get it for the comedies just as muchas I did for The Truman Show and Manon the Moon. And maybe I will. But I’mnot going to lose any sleep over it. I’mjust going to keep doing what I do —making people laugh. And I’m going tokeep smiling every time they call myname for the nomination and clapwhen it goes to the other guy.”

Don't you hate those womenwho add just one carefully cho-sen accessory to their workday

outfit and are magically transformedinto party-ready glamourpusses? Notthat we want to begin a Christmascolumn with the theme of “hate,” but really.

You don't need the fashion savvy ofa Hollywood stylist to dress yourselffor the holidays. The fastest way toadd festive gleam is through someminimal, non-invasive tinkering andthe judicious use of accessories.

Having the right party add-ons canprovide the glamour equivalent of aClark Kent to Superman transforma-tion. Indulge yourself with colourand girly sparkle, even if you shyaway from such attention-getters therest of the year. Besides, now that it'sdark before 6 p.m., we could all reallyuse the colour.

The other route to party pre-paredness is that one killer dress— the showstopper. Our choice, from Tristan & America, hasboth holiday colour and a verymodern silhouette, which meansyou can look Christmassy with-out seeming like you belong on the tree with the other ornaments.

During the holiday season, red is not a cliché, it's a tradi-tion. And thank heavens it'sback after some wrongheadedattempts to make the holidaysdubiously trendy (baby blueChristmas trees?). Irony hasno place in this most festiveof seasons.

Before we launch into our list ofmust-haves, don't forget to spreadthe holiday cheer to those less fortu-nate. You can write a cheque to acharitable organization, or, if shop-ping is more your thing, buy sometoys for a local toy drive or be aSecret Santa for someone in need. This is, after all, the season of giving.

HappyHolidays!

Now that Arnold Schwartzenegger’s Jingle All the Way andBob “Porky’s” Clark’s Black Christmas are out on DVD, it’s

easy to name a sackful of classic Christmas movies worth seeingthis holiday season — in fact, even celebrities seem able to doit (see page 54).

But what about December’s other big holiday? Despite itsfocus on drama-ready, adult topics like parties and romance —not to mention free-flowing champagne — the list of memorableNew Year’s Eve movies is surprisingly short and comprised ofmovies that might not immediately spring to mind. So, we offeryou these suggestions for a New Year’s Eve movie marathon.

If you want that sweet feeling without the extra helping ofsyrup that comes with most Yuletide talesyou can’t do much better than 1989’sWhen Harry Met Sally. Meg Ryan was nevercuter and Billy Crystal was actually sort ofappealing in this pitch-perfect romanticcomedy that tracks a star-crossed pair whofall madly, deeply, passionately into friend-ship…then finally more, after Crystal’s maddash across Manhattan one New Year’s Eve.

In Peter’s Friends (1992) a group of college pals who’ve beenseparated for 10 years meet for a New Year’s Eve reunion atPeter’s English countryside estate. This ensemble dramedy,co-starring Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh, is oftencalled an English version of The Big Chill — which is hardlyfair, considering how much funnier, dramatic and less whinythis gang is. This one’s not out on DVD yet, so you’ll have totrack down a VHS copy.

For something equally talky but decidedly hipper, there’salways 1999’s 200 Cigarettes. Set in Manhattan on New Year’sEve 1981, this comedy features a revolving cast of charactersfumbling around the East Village on their way to and from var-ious parties. It’s got a great punk/new wave time-capsulesoundtrack, and how’s this for a cast: Christina Ricci, KateHudson, Janeane Garofalo, Ben Affleck, Courtney Love, DaveChappelle and Elvis Costello as himself.

Need even more edge, not to mention some graphic violence, sex and nudity? Check out 1995’s Strange Days, a near-futureaction thriller set in the 48 hours before Y2K and written byJames Cameron. Ralph Fiennes is a sleazy virtual reality pornking, Angela Bassett is his bodyguard and Juliette Lewis, um,plays against type as a drugged-out wannabe rocker. Worth alook just for the explosive finale at a wild New Year’s Eve streetparty that ushers in the new millennium.

GEORGE CLOONEY “White Christmas…because of my aunt Rosemary Clooney. She sang those wonderful Irving Berlinsongs with Bing Crosby. It’s a looseremake of Holiday Inn. My aunt sang‘Count Your Blessings [Instead of Sheep]’and ‘Sisters’ — the latter with Vera-Ellen.”

SANDRA BULLOCK “How the GrinchStole Christmas, the animated cartoonnarrated by Boris Karloff. I have this thingfor Dr. Seuss. I just love him, especiallyaround the holidays. He perks up the spirit.”

TOBEY MAGUIRE “A Charlie BrownChristmas because it’s a genuine classic. All the Peanuts characters put on aChristmas pageant and poor Charlie gets alittle — really little — tree. Linus andSnoopy are there, the whole gang. VinceGuaraldi’s jazz score is cool, particularly‘Christmas Time is Here.’”

ROB LOWE “National Lampoon’sChristmas Vacation because it remindsme of when I rented an RV and my wifeand I packed up our two sons and our dogand went on a camping trip. It was great, but it had its moments.”

JOHN TRAVOLTA “Holiday Inn withBing Crosby and Fred Astaire. It’s abouttwo song-and-dance men seeking to helpout an old Army buddy at Christmas —and it’s the movie in which Crosby originallysang ‘White Christmas,’ which thenbecame a standard.”

CHRIS O’DONNELL “It’s a WonderfulLife with Jimmy Stewart. Every year Iwatch it, sometimes four or five times. It’smy favourite film of all time. When it getsto the part where the guy goes, ‘GeorgeBailey…he’s my brother,’ I tear up. It getsto me every single time.”

JIM CARREY “The Grinch, not onlybecause I played him, but because itshows how Christmas tends to bring outthe worst in people as well as the best. Ifyou dig deep enough, everyone has a reason to be miserable at Christmas. Iremember my father used to tie sleighbells under our beds on Christmas Eveand totally freak us out. I was terrorized.”

WHOOPI GOLDBERG “A ChristmasCarol with Alastair Sim because he’s the quintessential Scrooge to me, a real curmudgeon. I think it’s one of the bestChristmas holiday films ever made.”

LIZA MINNELLI “Meet Me in St. Louisbecause my father [Vincent Minnelli]directed it and my mother [Judy Garland]sang the incomparable Ralph Blane/HughMartin song ‘Have Yourself a Merry LittleChristmas.’”
