Overview of the Swedish Upper Secondary School – With focus on
Gothenburg and ICT

Schoolsystem
• Preschool age 1 – 6
• Compulsory school 9 years
• Upper secondary school 3 years
From 1 of July 2011
• 18 national programmes
• 12 vocational programmes
• 6 programmes preparing for higher education
Introductory programmes
• 5 introductory programmes for students not eligible for the national programmes
• Preparatory education• Programme oriented individual options• Vocational introduction• Individual alternative• Language introduction
Requirements
• Different requirements to upper secondary education
• Vocational programmes, at least 8 subjects passed
• Preparing for higher education, at least 12 subjects passed
Courses and subjects
• Based on courses
• One or more courses in different subjects
• Most of the courses cover 100 credits (app 4 weeks fulltime studies)
City of Gothenburg
• 10 district councils
• 1 special council for the upper secondary schools, app 2100 employees (most of them teachers)
• App 30 independent upper secondary schools in Gothenburg
Organisation
• Director of Education, Sven Höper• Staff (economy, planning and developing,
human resources, it and quality) and a Guidance Center
• 5 districts and a Head of School District for each
• 1 – 6 principals in each upper secondary school (13 different schools)
DIGG – Program for digital competencies in the upper secondary schools and adult
education - Gothenburg
• A five year ICT-development program 2009 – 2014
• Contains a wide range of goals such as wireless networks in all schools, computers for all teachers and also education, LMS.

• Situated at the section for IT and Quality
• Five education areas shared between us• Skånegatan, Centrum, Lindholmen, Adult education
and schools for the intellektually challanged
• Focus areas depending of special skills
• Apple, PC, LMS, Google, Distance learning
• Monitoring school development in the ICT area
• Support the headmasters in strategic planning• Take part in the implementation of digital devices• Serve as a link between the schools and other parts of
Gothenburg• Take part of central development projects and local
school projects• Measure the ICT-skills once a year.
