BlogsBlogs

What is it? Blogs, short for Web Logs, are personal online journals that people use to post their

thoughts and comments about a topic of their interest. These comments are seen by anyone that accesses that website. Others have the chance to read and respond to these comments.

Who uses it? Teachers students politicians

Actors, etc. Anyone who has internet access and wants to post their thoughts and feelings about anything they choose.

How is it used?Example: A fourth grade teacher posts questions online regarding a book they read in class. The students are to respond to each question and to their classmates comments.

Listserv

• What is it? A program that allows

people to create, manage, and control an

electronic mailing list.• Who uses it? Anyone who would like to

send a message to more than one person

without having to manually type out email

addresses.

• Why is it used?Allows a person to quickly send a message to a group of email addresses.

• How is it used?- Teachers create a list of students with their email addresses. This list can be used to send classroom news.

- Students can create their own list of their peers’ email address to send out group information.

Virtual ClassroomWhat is it?

An online learning environment that allows students, teachers, and others to interact with each other.

Who uses it?

- Students

- Teachers

- Corporate members

Why is it used it?•Students interact with the teacher without having to physically be in a classroom •Teachers can show students materials without the need for the students to be physically present.•Students can talk to each other without having to be in the same physical room.•provide training for new employees.

Virtual Classroom

How is it used?

• In many areas such as distance learning the teacher uses a virtual classroom to meet with students to either teach a lesson or enter into a live discussion.

Fourth Grade Math LessonFourth Grade Math Lesson

Problem Solving

Objective:• Students will use problem solving strategies to demonstrate

solutions to various math problems.

• Students will use listserv to communicate with classmates in their assigned groups, blogs to post their problem for Miller Elementary fourth graders to solve, and a virtual classroom to share their problem, strategy, and final solution with their classmates and fourth grade students at Miller Elementary who will be participating in the same project.

Materials: Pencils, paper, white boards, markers, calculators and manipulatives.

Procedure: 1. This will be a cooperation between two fourth grade

teachers who teach in different buildings in the same district.

2. Brown Elementary students will be assigned to groups of four and given a multi-step problem to solve. Each group will be given a different problem to solve. Students will use email (listserv) which has been set up by the teacher to communicate with their group to solve the problem. Students will be provided materials such as pencils, paper, white boards, markers, calculators and manipulatives to aid in the solution of the problem.

3. Once the group has found the solution to their problem the group will post the problem to a blog where fourth grade students from Miller Elementary will attempt to solve the problem. Each member of the group will be responsible to post at least two questions or comments to aid in the solution of the problem for one week.

4. After one week, each group from both elementary buildings will present their problem to each other and their classmates using virtual classroom. Students will tell what strategy they used, the steps used to solve the problem and the final solution to the problem. They will then participate in a question-answer session with classmates and students from the other building.

Expected Benefits:

• Students will learn to work cooperatively through the use of technology.

• Through the use of listserv students will learn to communicate electronically. They will learn to maneuver an email site and use the tools to effectively communicate their ideas.

• Through the use of a blog students will learn to how to post their ideas and then provide reflective, thoughtful correspondence with others.

• Through the use of a virtual classroom students will interact with other students from the district whom they would otherwise not have contact with while sharing problem solving strategies.

• Students will research and develop a presentation of one planet from our Solar System.

• Students will use listserv to communicate in their assigned groups, blogs to post their rough draft of their research paper for the project/presentation and virtual classroom for sharing their presentations with their classmates.

Procedure:

1. Students will be assigned to a group, which will research and develop a presentation of a planet from our solar system. Students will use the internet to research their planet and then share their findings with others in their group. Using listserv members in each group will share links to websites to help each other research their area of the planet assigned to their group. Areas of research will include: Size, distance from the Earth, climate, gravitational pull, life on the planet, surface characteristics and any other special features.

2. Students will create a rough draft of the information they are responsible for in their group and then post it on a blog where group members will peer edit their rough draft and make suggestions for improvement.

3. Using a virtual classroom, students will share their group presentations with classmates.

3. Through the use of a virtual classroom students will present their research project to their classmates. Through these presentations all students will learn about the solar system in which we live.

• By using the virtual classroom to exchange ideas with classmates, each student has the opportunity to share his/her ideas and at the same time learn from each other.

• This also helps those students who aren’t fans of face-to-face conversations.

• In a regular class each student would have had to pass their poem around class for editing. Listserv eliminates that hassle.

1. Students will be able to create a math newsletter containing, three paragraphs about a mathematician chosen from a list, provided by the teacher; two math story problems with the solutions, and one math brain teaser.

Procedure:• Teacher will provide a list of mathematicians to students

using the listserv.• Teacher will take students on a virtual fieldtrip using the

virtual classroom. Teacher will take students through 4 websites to learn how to research mathematicians.

• Websites will include how to create story problems and brain teasers with a few examples.

• Students will research a mathematician they have chosen and write a three paragraph paper.

• Using the listserv, students will email three to their classmates, five facts about their mathematician.

6. Each student will pretend to be a mathematician and come up with two math story problems & the solutions.

7. One brain teaser is to be created by each student. Teacher will provide support when needed..

8. Students will post their brain teaser and math problems to the classroom blog.

9. Each student is to try to solve three of their classmates math problems. Students must show their work when solving the story problems.

Expected Benefits1. In this lesson, the virtual classroom provides the

students with the opportunity to communicate with each other. Also, the virtual fieldtrip teaches the student how easy it is to bring the outside world to the classroom without having to leave!

2. The listserv allows the students to email their papers for editing instead of making copies of their paper and passing it out to their classmates. This motivates them to write more to each other and not worry about the disadvantages that come with physically writing things out.

3. The blog eliminates the process of having to share their math problems with each individual, instead, using the blog, one post is all that’s needed. Also, everyone could see what each person posted. They could all see the brain teasers that each one came up with and even get ideas from each other.

and look at the other observations of their classmates to compare what they did.

• The virtual classroom allows the students to receive and download graphics for manipulation and see their directions visually and auditory as well if the presentation is in video format.
