40th AKBC-KABC Joint Meeting

Closing cocktail reception

The Australia-Korea bilateral relationship has a rich and robust history. The strategic importance of the relationship continues to grow. Korea is Australia's third largest export market and fourth largest trading partner. Korea has also been a longstanding investor in Australia and has helped build the economic capacity of Australia.

Australian resources and agricultural products fuel the Korean economy, while Korean electronics, cars, cosmetics and equipment have become household names in Australia. The two countries are linked by a wide-ranging free trade agreement (KAFTA), offering preferential access. The diverse and innovative economics of both countries are creating new exciting opportunities for collaboration. Now is a great time to take a first or fresh look at these opportunities.

The Australia-Korea Business Council (AKBC) and Korea-Australia Business Council (KABC) exist to develop understanding of these opportunities, build linkages between companies and work with business leaders and government to widen and strengthen the dynamic economic relationship.

The flagship event each year is the Joint Meeting between the two business councils, the AKBC and KABC, which this year will be held on 12 - 13 November in Sydney, Australia. The annual Joint Meeting has a proud 39-year history and is the premier Australia-Korea business event. The Joint Meeting is widely regarded by senior decision makers and key influencers from industry, government and academia involved in Australia-Korea business as the one event in the year not to be missed.

The program will extend over two-days and include site visits, a welcome dinner hosted by the NSW Government, future leaders program, Australian delegation breakfast and the Joint Meeting.

This year, AKBC will host the 40th Joint Meeting under the theme of ‘Celebrating 40 years: charting a new course in the bilateral relationship’. We expect the conversation to focus on the future of energy, including renewables and hydrogen, biotechnology, financial services, infrastructure and innovation.

The Joint Meeting attracts a senior delegation from Korea, led by the Korea Australia Business Council Chairman and CEO of POSCO, Mr. Jeong Woo Choi. The Australian delegation will be led by the recently appointed chair of the AKBC, the Hon Simon Crean.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The Joint Meeting is targeted at senior business executives and key decision makers seeking to get informed, be heard and do deals.

At the Joint Meeting last year, 61% of Australian delegates held the title of Chairman, CEO or Director and 76% of Korean delegates held the tile of Chairman, CEO, President or Director.

REASONS TO ATTEND OUTCOMES SINCE 2018

Activity between Australia and Korea since the AKBC Joint Meeting in October 2018 demonstrates the changing nature of the relationship. Highlights and landmark deals of note include:• Hanwha Corp acquired a $25m mixed use

agricultural property in Mudgee with the prospect of showcasing their remote renewable energy systems.

• Hanwha Defence opened their office in Sydney as they pursue the Land 400 Defence contract and have plans to establish a manufacturing site in Geelong.

• Lotte International purchased the Sandalwood feedlot near Dalby on Queensland’s Darling Downs. The deal represents one of the biggest Australian feedlot sales in recent years.

• Lotte Duty Free entered the Australian duty free market through acquisition of JR/Duty Free in late 2018 .

The Joint Meeting is the most efficient and effective platform to understand the latest trends in the Australia-Korea corridor, learn about evolving and emerging business opportunities, build and strengthen your networks and identify, initiate and advance deals.

By participating in the 2019 Joint Meeting you will gain access to decision-makers of large multinational corporations active in the Australia-Korea relationship and key policy makers.
