PRESTIGE AND PERFORMANCE. Each inspired by its own“winged B” symbol, Breitling and Bentley share the same concernfor perfection. The same extreme standards of reliability, precisionand authenticity. The same unique blend of prestige and performance.Whether in the Breitling workshops or in the Bentley factory inCrewe, cutting-edge technology is placed in the service of nobletraditions. Symbolising this communion of ideals, Breitling participatedin styling the instrumentation of the Bentley Continental models, the most powerful ever built by Bentley.

EXCLUSIVITY AND TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE. For devoteesof fine mechanisms, Breitling has created a line of exceptionalchronographs named “Breitling for Bentley”. Representing the culmination of sophisticated aesthetic research, these wrist instruments mirror the signature features of the famous Britishcar manufacturer. Dedicated to the automobile world, theyincorporate several exclusive technical characteristics, including avariable tachometer, and are propelled by high-performance“motors” patiently assembled by watchmakers at the peak oftheir art.Time is the ultimate luxury.

Last December, two daysbefore opening night of theBSO’s Holiday Spectacular, apackage was delivered to

executive producer Dori Armor andcostume designer David Burdick: 10pairs of gold leather elf shoes.“Theywere all handmade for each elf. It tooka month to make them,”Armor recalls. The team soon discovered, however, that the shoes for the largest elf—“hewas the size of a football player,”Armor says—were much too small.

It was down-to-the-wire decisiontime for Armor: Should the largest elfjust wear a different pair?

December 2007 1110 Overture

The show must go on.And with thisyear’s Holiday Spectacular set for two acts, hundreds of costumes, 200 lighting cues a cast of more than 75 singers and dancersand 65 orchestral musicians, last-minute production surprises are inevitable.

But surprises are in store, too, for the audience members—even those who sawthe show in 2005 and 2006.They can lookforward to a couple of perennial favorites, like the reindeer flying overhead during“Twas the Night Before Christmas,” and thetap-dancing Santas that close the first act.But the rest of the show is brand new.“People might assume that since the showhas the same name, that they’re going to seethe same thing every year,” says choreogra-pher Jennifer Ladner.“But every time yousee it, the show will surprise you. It’s likeopening a little Christmas present—actually,a very, very big Christmas present.”

months of planningFirst performed in Baltimore in 2005,Holiday Spectacular is based on a similarproduction: the Indianapolis SymphonyYuletide Celebration. BSO Holiday Spectaculardirector David Levy, a playwright and theatrical lyricist based in NewYork City, has directed Yuletide Celebration for the past14 years, as well as many other holidaypops shows across the country. Levy saysthe Baltimore audience took to the showlike none other.“From the very first year,Holiday Spectacular snowballed in popularity,”he says, leading many to joke that it was“a miracle on Cathedral Street.” Due to its popularity, 12 performances are sched-uled this year, up from last year’s nine,Levy says,“because we knew we could fill up the hall. It’s really becoming aBaltimore tradition.”

Pre-production for this year’s showbegan in May, when Levy started mappingout the acts with Armor, music directorJack Everly and lighting designer StuartDuke. In August, they held local auditionsto fill out the cast of singers. Levy says wellover 100 local performers auditioned, ofwhich 15 were chosen. He estimates that75 percent of the cast is from theBaltimore area.

By early autumn, Levy and choreographer

Jennifer Ladner had determined the stepsthat she would eventually teach the twodozen student dancers from the BaltimoreSchool for the Arts (BSA).“It’s a verydance-oriented show this year,” says Ladner, who’s long been involved in the IndianapolisYuletide show and has choreographed theBSO Holiday Spectacular since its inception.

In addition to the Dancing Santas numberand “The Twelve Days of Christmas”—anepic piece that includes the entire cast onstage at once—the BSA dancers will per-form some of their own choreography fromThe Nutcracker. The BSA dancers startedrehearsals in October.

Those in the audience who saw lastyear’s show will recognize the DancingSantas number just before intermission. Buteven this favorite’s choreography is differentthan last year, Ladner says. For one thing, theDancing Santas will be on stage for theentire piece, instead of just capping thebeginning and end.“It’s carried completelyby the Santas this year, which makes itmuch harder for the dancers because theydon’t get a break,” Ladner says.

For Levy, one of the most satisfyingaspects of working with this group ofBaltimore’s young talent is giving them theopportunity to work with New York profes-sionals. Last year, he was surprised to see thatthe student dancers always stuck around the

studio after rehearsal to watch the profes-sionals.“It was really great to see themobserve and appreciate the work ethic,”he says.

one week and countingThe most difficult part about putting onthe BSO’s Holiday Spectacular, Levy says, isthe timing: Such a technically sophisticatedshow normally demands much more timefor on-stage preparation. But since theMeyerhoff is booked solid in the weeks preceding Holiday Spectacular,“you just don’thave the luxury of that much time,” heexplains. The entire production is staged in a little more than one week. So the performers, who must learn so much so quickly,“have got to be up to snuff.”Rehearsals begin just a couple of weeksbefore the first performance in a studio

on the lower level of the Meyerhoff. Inthose final days, it’s not unusual for the castto rehearse for 10 or 12 hours a day.

The cast’s exuberance is evident in Levy’s favorite story from last year’s show, concerning the chorus line of high-kickingSantas.The Santas had been told to kickwith as much energy as possible until thecurtain came down to cover their legs. Onopening night, the curtain got stuck. But the Santas just kept on kicking.“I’m sittingthere in the audience with my mouth open, thinking ‘please, someone stop themalready,’” Levy says, laughing. When the curtain did finally come down—“with a big boom”—the audience understood whathad happened and gave the indomitabledancers a rousing ovation.“It was like theywere clapping for soldiers marching intobattle,” he recalls.

like broadway theaterEven before the curtain rises, the HolidaySpectacular audience will swoon over thephysical transformation of the Meyerhoff, predicts executive producer Armor:“By thetime we’re done with the set, people thinkthey’re walking into a Broadway theater.”

Armor likens BSO Holiday Spectacular to“Radio City meets a symphony orchestra.”And the big-budget talent requires, well, abig budget: just shy of $1 million.

After such a successful first season in2005, last year the BSO made a valuableinvestment in a brand-new HolidaySpectacular set for the Meyerhoff, includingnew draperies, a new lighting design and, perhaps most obviously, the two 30-footNutcracker statues that flank the stage.(See “One on One,” page 14)

one of the most underappreciated elementsof Holiday Spectacular. Success, for Duke,is often understated: “The show needs tocome together in a seamless way. The lighting makes the scenery look terrific, but it should never distract from the performance.”

something for everybodyAnd the result of all this intense preparation?“Truly something for everybody,” Levy says,“from young children, to teens, to adults.”

“ ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” aretelling of Clement Clarke Moore’s classictale, has been a crowd favorite since BSOHoliday Spectacular’s premiere. Puppeteersapproach the stage from the back of the theater, with their puppets propped on verylong poles, so that the audience can lookover their heads to see reindeer pullingSanta’s sleigh.

In addition to the orchestral music arranged by Jack Everly, the audience willhear a broad variety of music throughoutthe night. This year’s BSO HolidaySpectacular host is Broadway tenor Mike Eldred, who has also performed inconcert with symphonies throughout theworld and is perhaps most famous for

playing the starring role of Jean Valjean inLes Misérables on Broadway. The show also features soprano opera singer N’KengeSimpson-Hoffman.

Another new segment features familiarFrankie Valli and the Four Seasons songmelodies paired with new holiday lyrics.“So ‘Sherry, baby’ becomes ‘Santa, baby,’”Levy says.

The dancing styles, too, change through-out the night.“You’ll see ballet, includingpointe work, you’ll see jazz, tap dancing andeven Irish clogging!” Ladner says. The six-member O’Hare Irish dance troupe fromChicago will perform with a local Celticdance ensemble in “I Saw Three ShipsCome Sailing In.”

“The Twelve Days of Christmas” beginswith a ballerina and ends with more than 40 performers joining the orchestra onstage.“The piece is really fun, really playful, and takes the audience by surprise because... well, I don’t want to give it away,”Ladner says.

Ladner wasn’t surprised at howquickly BSO Holiday Spectacular becamepopular.“Baltimore was hungry for aholiday show like this,” she says.“Last year, I saw people coming away really feeling that they’d seen something special. It’s a world-class show, right here in theBaltimore community.”

Says Levy,“The gratification for me isbeing in the audience every night and seeing their response.Audiences don’t lie—and from the minute the curtain goes up,the excitement is really palpable.”

Armor says that the show has alreadybecome a tradition for many families, including her own.“I’m proud to say that I was involved in getting it off its feet. It’sthe kind of production I take my childrento see. I hope it’s a tradition they will con-tinue when they have families of their ownone day.”

Putting up the lighting might be themost frenzied job of all, according to light-ing designer Stuart Duke, who’s worked onthe Baltimore show all three years and onthe Indianapolis Yuletide show for 20.“If youwere doing a production of this kind inNew York, you’d be in rehearsals and techproductions for weeks,” he says.“We do it allin about three days.”

This extremely tight timetable is onlypossible because the crew comes in prepared. Duke has already determined the 200-plus different lighting cues the audi-ence will see throughout the night. And theteam has already ordered the necessaryequipment, and laid out exactly where thelights will go. Duke’s lighting team of threedesigners and about six electricians work on two basic kinds of lighting systems:“intelligent” lights and conventional lights.Intelligent lights are computerized and, once programmed,“can execute intricately choreographed moves,” Duke says, includingzooming in and out and changing colors.Conventional lights are preset by the technicians.

With all of the eye-popping sets and costumes, familiar holiday melodies and fantastic performances, the lighting might be

Q. Where did you get so muchStyrofoam?A. There’s a foam factory nearby that pro-duces all of this wonderful uncut Styrofoam. You get huge blocks of it, much like whenyou’re working with stone.

Q. Just how big are these blocks? A. They vary. The sculpture designs calledfor a top torso nearly six feet tall, and thefactory couldn’t produce the whole thing inone piece, so we had to break down thedrawings into smaller pieces. For the torsoalone we ended up getting two huge blocksthat were about five feet high, three feetwide and three-and-a-half feet deep.

Q. How did you get so much detailfrom such big pieces? A. It’s difficult. Essentially it’s like any sculp-ture:You block it in first with loose cuts.Weworked on it first with a chainsaw and thenwith a smaller Japanese saw, which is a kindof two-sided saw that’s used quite often intraditional Japanese house construction.Andthen you make tighter cuts with heavy filesand sandpaper.

After the first big cuts, we coated theStyrofoam with a mixture that reinforced itso the nutcrackers could be handled withoutflaking apart. The material is often used intheatrical productions. It’s a fiber that getsbrushed or troweled on, about 1/8 of aninch, and then becomes very hard—you can knock on it. So once coated, you have a crisp, hard surface great for rounding out imperfections.

After the big pieces are carved, we decorate them with more bits of foam tocreate the details in the clothing, so thatfrom a distance it will look like cording, for

Barbara ThompsonBarbara Thompson, a commercial artist from Baltimore, led last year’s creative team that brought to life the two, 30-foot foam nutcracker sculptures flanking the stage of Holiday Spectacular. The team, whichincluded local sculptor Chris Southwick and a painting crew of six, fabri-cated the sculptures in about two weeks in the warehouse of theBaltimore Opera. Thompson talked to Overture about cutting foam, working under a deadline and why she never saw the show.

instance. So we’d glue that on and then coverit with the hardening coating, then go backover it and paint the details on and finallyseal it.We sealed it with a very reflectivematerial, which really came alive on stage.

Q. How do you connect all of the pieces? A. Well, it’s interesting because they’re sobig. Just the legs with boots alone were over10 feet tall. So in the warehouse we’d setsections up and look at them—the head ontop of the upper torso, and then that on topof the lower torso. As far as the engineeringof the whole thing, there was a carpenter,Cal O’Campa, who worked with us. He haddone a lot of boat building, and so hedesigned a strong wooden truss system forthe inside of the body.

Q. What’d you think of the show? A. We were really busy until the last minute,so I didn’t get a chance to actually see theshow! We went in for the rehearsals, and sawit when they were working on the lighting.

Q. Will you go this year? A. I’m dying to see it.

Q. How did you first get involved with BSO Holiday Spectacular?

A. Word of mouth, basically.Annie Applegarth, theshow’s production manager, said “We need these bignutcrackers!” She was working with a scenic designer,Gregory Hill, who was designing the BSO HolidaySpectacular set and had envisioned two big nutcrackersand a gold medallion hanging from the center. It’s afairly tight community [of prop designers], so we allknow each other and I think a lot of jobs travel byword of mouth.

The BSO is a priceless part of Baltimore’s cultural infrastructure and we ought to assure its continued excellence no less than we maintain our schools and parks. IF YOU’RE ROAMING THE BUSTLING MEYERHOFF LOBBY in thehour before the curtain rises for Holiday Spectacular, there’s a goodchance you’ll be approached by a smiling volunteer of the Baltimore

Symphony Associates (BSA), digital camera in hand. For just $10, all ofwhich goes to fund the symphony’s educational programs, you and yourfamily can be photographed against a backdrop of beautiful holidaydecorations. And, by the time those Santas are done tap dancing at theend of Act I, your 4x6 photo, framed in a large holiday card, will beready for pick-up.

This fundraising idea was developed by two past BSA presidents—Maurice R. Feldman and Evart F. “Bud” Cornell—for the first HolidaySpectacular in 2005. “They tested it at just a couple of performancesthen, not exactly sure of how it would go over,” remembers Feldman’swife, Sandy Feldman, who led the project in 2006 and has returned this

year. That first year the BSA raised a little more than $1,000. Last year, they formed a larger committee and brought in just under $4,000. This year, with 12 performances scheduled and about 50 volunteersenlisted, “we’re hoping to raise $10,000,” Sandy Feldman says.

The cameras belong to the volunteers, and the cards are donated bya local printer, leaving as expenses just the cost of the printers, ink andphoto paper.

The photographs tell wonderful holiday stories, Feldman says. “Oncewe had four generations—a baby, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother—in one picture. Sometimes it’s people celebrating anniver-saries. It’s a truly memorable experience for everybody.”

And do the Feldmans pose for a shot, too? “Of course!” — Virginia Hughes
