the first time this year.
altimore School for the Arts, whose student dancerswill once again share the stage with the BSO. Founded
in 1979, the BSA has been recognized as one of the top five
public arts schools in the United States. It’s also the alma mater
of BSO principal oboist Katherine Needleman.
apitol Quartet, the vibrant saxophone ensemble and BSO special guest who will perform such classic holiday tunes as
“Winter Wonderland” and “Here Comes Santa Claus.” “The
saxophone was originally intended as a classical instrument, but it
came to be used in America as a jazz instrument as well,” says
tenor saxophonist David Stambler. “This gives us a nice opportunity
to put a jazzy spin on some Christmas favorites.”

We’ve made our list, we’ve checked it twice and it has nothing
to do with who’s been naughty or nice. It’s not one of those tiresome
to-do lists so ubiquitous at this time of year; the holiday season already
has too many of those.
The list you’ll find here is an A to Z inventory of the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra’s Holiday Spectacular, the annual fiesta of seasonal
festiveness that blends music, dance, song and stories into one neat
little present. Unlike that hideous sweater that Great Aunt Gertrude gave
you, this holiday gift won’t need to be returned.
aniel Okulitch, the award-winning Canadian-bornopera singer who joins the show this year as a special
guest soloist. Okulitch, who recently played the role of Sparrow
in Washington National Opera’s production of Peter Grimes,
first attracted national attention in 2002 on Broadway as
Schaunard in Baz Luhrmann’s production of La Bohème.
Reviews of his performances rarely fail to mention his sensitive
bass-baritone voice and commanding stage presence.

od Bless My Family,” Ann Hampton Callaway’s originalChristmas song from her CD This Christmas that she will
perform with the BSO and dedicate to her father John Callaway,
who died unexpectedly in June. “The holidays are about family
and about celebration of the spiritual part of our lives,” she says.
ours, as in many, many, many of them. BSO musicians andthe Holiday Spectacular cast and crew members spend 10
to 12 hours per day in rehearsals during the week leading up to
the show’s premiere.

the United States last year.

it-up lobby. It takes an average of seven people some 40 hours of work to bedeck the Meyerhoff lobby with thousands
of tiny white lights for the Holiday Spectacular, including the
240 strands of lights which hang from the ceiling and give the
appearance of indoor icicles.
arvelous Santatizing Machine, which you’ll see in actionnear the end of Act I. Elves go in one door and poof!—they are
magically transformed into tap-dancing Santas. How does it work?
Designer Gregory Hill is mum on the details but we did get him to
’fess up to how many Santas fit in the 40-foot-wide Santatizer. “It
houses at least 20 slim Santas or about 10 bowl-filled-with-jelly
Santas,” he says.
utcrackers that guard the stage. Crafted of Styrofoam, the stately 30-foot-tall soldier sculptures are comprised
of nine separate pieces and require a minimum of six crew
members to assemble. Do they actually work? We’ll let you

Symphony Associates. The $10 fee for each photo goes to fund
the BSO’s educational programs and you can pick up your print,
which comes framed in a large holiday card after the show.

ery tight space. Once you pack 100 musicians and performers, eight not-so-tiny reindeer, a bunch of Santas and
the rest of the production on the Meyerhoff stage, there’s no extra
room. At all. “The stage is wider than it is deep,” says Norma Pera,
head of the BSA’s dance department. “The single most important
thing we tell our dancers is to stay away from the bows of the
string section.”

uartet. That means four, although the Capitol Quartetactually has one more. There are five members in the
ensemble, but one chair changes depending on whether the
group is playing jazz and symphonic pops or classical and
chamber music. For Holiday Spectacular, you’ll see alto saxo-
phonist Marty Nau onstage but not alto saxophonist Joe Lulloff.
Q
eindeer puppets leaping through the audience and ontothe stage. Artist Barbara Thompson says when she made
the puppets featured in the “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”
number, she was going for a “soft and huggable” look and a
cartoon style. The puppets are made out of yarn, cardboard,
foam and wood and are surprisingly heavy. So to make sure
the pairs of reindeer sail 10 to 12 feet overhead, their handlers
balance them on a wooden rod that rests in a belt they wear
around their waists.
R
pectacular. adj. 1. Of, or like a spectacle; impressive.
2. Dramatically daring or thrilling.—n. 3. An impressive,

S
resent. Callaway has a gift for Holiday Spectacular
audiences: an original song they’ll help her create about
what makes the holidays in Baltimore special. These impro-
vised songs are a signature part of her live shows and she’s
looking forward to hearing what the crowd comes up with
and performing it with the BSO. “The humor that’s in the
song is usually pretty outrageous,” she says. Now then,
what rhymes with “sauerkraut?”
P
was the Night before Christmas, the first line of the poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” which has been
performed as part of the Holiday Spectacular since the show’s
premiere. Published anonymously in 1823 and later credited to
Clement Clarke Moore, the popular poem has been parodied
by heavy metal band Korn, referenced in the movie Die Hard
and performed by the Muppets.

Marin Alsop, Music Director
Hailed as one of the world’s leading
conductors for her artistic vision and
commitment to accessibility in classical
music, Marin Alsop made history with
her appointment as the 12th music
director of the Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra. With her inaugural concerts
in September 2007, she became the
first woman to head a major American
orchestra. She also holds the title of
conductor emeritus at the Bournemouth
Symphony in the United Kingdom,
where she served as the principal
conductor from 2002 to 2008, and is
music director of the Cabrillo Festival
of Contemporary Music in California.
In 2005, Ms. Alsop was named a
MacArthur Fellow, the first conductor
ever to receive this prestigious award. In
2007, she was honored with a European
Women of Achievement Award, in 2008
she was inducted as a fellow into the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences
and in 2009 Musical America named her“Conductor of the Year.”
A regular guest conductor with the
New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia
Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra
and Los Angeles Philharmonic, Ms. Alsop
also appears frequently as a guest
conductor with some of the most distin-
guished orchestras around the world. In
addition to her performance activities,
she is also an active recording artist with
award-winning cycles of Brahms and
Barber orchestral works.
Ms. Alsop attended Yale University
and received her master’s degree
from The Juilliard School. In 1989, her
conducting career was launched when
she won the Koussevitzky Conducting
Prize at Tanglewood, where she studied
with Leonard Bernstein.

share more than just a first name. They’reboth military veterans, they both like torun and they both have a lifelong love of music.
But the biggest thing Patey andHoffman have in common is their friendship. Violinist Patey (right) andtrumpeter Hoffman (left) have played inthe Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for acombined 69 years. Patey, 69, joined theBSO in 1968 after spending three yearsplaying piccolo in the U.S. Army.Hoffman, 65, came to the BSO from theNorth Carolina Symphony in 1981. Forthe last few decades, they’ve shared thestage and a locker room, toured theworld with the BSO and made each otherlaugh. (Their well-oiled comedy stylingsgo something like this: Asked aboutwhen their friendship started, Hoffmandeadpans, “We’ve never been friends.”Patey, ever the straight man, agrees. “Nonever,” he says, shaking his head.)
Given the fact that Ed and Ed haveshared so much over the years, it seemssomehow fitting that they are retiringtogether, too. Holiday Spectacular will be their last concert with the BSO.
The parting is bittersweet. “I’ll missthe camaraderie of playing in the BSO,”Patey says. “I’ve really enjoyed makinggreat music here.” Hoffman agrees. “I’vebeen happy here. Playing in a greatorchestra with excellent musicians hasbeen the treat of a lifetime.”
Yet they’re also looking forward tothe opportunities that retirement brings.Patey, who has completed a dozenmarathons, hopes to devote more time torunning. In addition, he’s thinking aboutwriting a book about his experiences withthe BSO. “I’ve collected a lot of interest-ing anecdotes over the years,” he says.Hoffman plans to continue teaching atthe Peabody Conservatory and travelingto Hong Kong in the summer to coachtrumpet students who play with theAsian Youth Orchestra. He also wants to spend more time painting, taking photographs and fly fishing. “My fishingfriends can’t wait for me to retire,”Hoffman says. He pauses. “Neither canmy colleagues.”
He looks over at Patey and they sharea laugh. —Maria Blackburn
