SHARING KELLY SLATER’S WAVESSHARING KELLY SLATER’S WAVESSHARING KELLY SLATER’S WAVESSHARING KELLY SLATER’S WAVES

It is 10 am in Florida, and Cocoa Beach is deserted and peaceful. The waves are just perfect, and it seems that Kelly Slater is the only fish in the sea. We were supposed to meet at 10, but he has been here the whole morning, he has been surfing the whole morning. The nine-time ASP World Champion enjoys of a quiet July day to relax after achieving another victory at the Rip Curl Pro, Australia. OB: Nice place, I imagine you have great memories of your childhood in this beach. Certainly, it’s been a while since I came home. It reminds me of the good old days, hanging out with my friends and waiting for the perfect wave. Good memories. OB: Yes, the good old days, but what

about now? I don’t think a world champion has the right to complain… (Laughs) No, not at all. I mean, I’m getting older, but I like it. I’m growing as a surfer and also as a person. I’m improving in terms of surf, but you know, you never stop learning. OB: I agree, but at this point of your life, would it be safe to say that your childhood dreams have been answered? Yeah, even more so, because I always had the feeling inside that I could do it, I could get where I am. But to actually get there's a whole different story. To spend all that time and have everything fall into place just the right way for you, is really more than I can ask for.

“Being able to do what you love is something I have never stopped

thanking for”

OB: And of course it has been a difficult way to the top. Well I consider myself lucky, but sure surf is complicated in terms of weather and different conditions that you can’t control. If the sea is not good, then you don’t get a good result, but of course is about making the most of it. At the end

of the day, that’s all that matters, making the best of it. OB: While you’re inside one of these amazing pipelines barrels, how do you make the best of it? I don’t know, it’s beyond physical capacity, I guess it’s more like a mental state. It just looks like there’s a hole ahead of you and you’ve got to climb through it. There’s this hole and it’s trying to get away from you and you’re trying to get through it. Then the wave spits and you don’t see anything (laughs). OB: And what do you do when you’re not able to surf, due to natural or other type of conditions? Well, apart from surfing, I enjoy lots of sports too. I usually go golfing and fishing with my pals. Also I’m into jui-jitsu now. It’s a combat sport, kind of a martial art. OB: But it must be difficult to hang out with your pals while you concentrate on your surf career… Definitely, surf is my priority. It has always been. You know, being able to do what you love is something I have never stopped thanking for. OB: Are you planning to be the ten- time ASP World Champion?

Absolutely, I feel like I can do better, but it’s not about competition against other surfers, it’s a competition against myself. I always think there’s more and I think if you don’t have that, then you are not driven to better.

OB: Can you tell me about your new projects? Right now I’m working with Reef Check preserving oceans globally and protecting temperate reefs. I really want to have a positive effect on surfing. I think it’s my duty and obligation to preserve nature, especially if it’s what makes me surf.

“To spend all that time and have everything fall into place just the right way for you, is really

more than I can ask for”

OB: Well, we all should. Thank you for your time Kelly, and good luck in everything. No, no, thanks to you and to all the people of Overboard, it was a pleasure.

Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, was elected by our readers this month. In this novel Golding created a story in which he clarly shows how human sense of civilization is easily courrupted. Let’s move to where the story takes place. You’re a nine year old boy who’s plane crushed on a desert island after an attempt of escaping from war. Perfect right? No war, no adults to tell you what to do, a whole island all for yourself. Palm trees seem to grow everywhere, and the weather is perfect for a tropical summer. The descripiton that Golding gives us about this desert island makes us want to be there even more. On one end stands a calm pool that extends to a coral reef and then the sea. On the other, clifs sink and transform into crystal waves. But let’s focus on the main theme. The first days seem to be an ideal dream in which you explore the island and also discover your savage instincts. Contact with nature is no longer in your conversations, since now it has become your home. Lord of the Flies is a novel that invites us to think about the world that we live in and reconsider our behaviour. Morality and religion are some of the main themes that Golding explores in his book, and it’s basically based on this. He reflects our life in a simple story about children.
