Letter From the Director

Dear Students, Parents, Guardians and the Columbus Community, We are one of 12 schools nominated by Ohio Department of Education(ODE) for the National Blue Ribbon School Award. Our nomination is based on our academic performance over recent years. Thank you to parents, students, and members of the community for your tireless work to achieve such a great nomination.

We will be offering classes from Kenyon College starting next school year. Our teachers will be teaching Calculus and Biology and our students will receive Kenyon transcript and college credit at the end of the class. Thanks to Kenyon College and their Kenyon Academic Partnership Program (KAP).

We already received quite a lot of college acceptances, some of which you can find in this newsletter. We are committed to getting every one of our seniors to a college program. Please feel free to email us your comments and testimonials, send it to school in writing or simply find our school on GreatSchools.org by searching for “Horizon Science Academy Columbus High School” and submit your comments and testimonials. Please check our website regularly for the updates about our school.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Health Services Notification and Information About Bed Bugs

Columbus, Ohio has been identified as one of the top locations for bed bugs in the nation. As a pre-caution, we want all of our staff, students and par-ents to be alerted to these creatures and be knowledgeable of what to do should you find them. While there are no known diseases associated with bed bug bites, they are a nuisance and are difficult to exterminate. The source of the bedbugs are of-ten hard to identify and they are by no means asso-ciated with uncleanliness. They can be found in public restrooms, airplanes and taxicabs. Should you discover them in your home or on clothing, please contact a trained exterminator. The administration recommends going to www.centralohiobedbugs.org to learn about bed bugs and how to prevent them.

can send the form along with a check for $15 by mail or your child can bring it to the front |office. Please note, if you have more than one child attending HSA high school, you must send in a separate form. If you need a copy of a re-enrollment form, see page 7 of this newsletter.

Welcome to second semester!

Mid-Term exams are behind us with the promise of a fresh start and a new semester ahead of us. Now is the time to make resolutions and set goals to raise a grade, have better attendance and punctuality, get involved in a new activity, and live a healthier life.

Communicating with your student’s teachers, counselors, and administrators is key in helping your son or daughter achieve academic success. We encourage you to ask questions, express your concerns, and communicate details that you believe would help us teach your students.

Here are some methods to communicate with teachers, counselors and administrators:

• Phone calls

The number to the school is 614 846-7616. HSA staff will return your call ASAP if a message is left.

E-mail

The school’s website is hs.horizoncolumbus.org. After entering the website, click on High School. You will find your student’s teachers listed under the Staff Directory with their e-mail addresses. It is very convenient and sometimes faster to email staff for information than to try to call them.

• Online grades

On the school website, hs.horizoncolumbus.org, is a link to the Online Database. Click on Grades Online on the right side of the HSA home page. You will find your student’s teachers listed that currently post their grades and assignments, at-tendance, activities, and report card online. All HSA students have usernames and passwords.

Parent/Teacher Conference is Saturday, February 25, 2012.

Mr. Kellum’s Corner I trust everyone had a great break and got some much needed rest. The weather has been kind to us so far so lets start thinking Spring ! Just a reminder to check the local TV stations for school closings. We will follow Columbus City Schools for closings due to weather. We still require school uniforms during colder weather. Students can wear "civilian" clothing underneath the school uniforms to keep warm, but the uniform must be the top layer. We have plenty of sweat shirts for sale in the front office. Black high top boots are acceptable when there is snow on the ground. Second semester is upon us. This means that you need to be checking your child's grades, contacting teachers through email, and if necessary setting up parent conferences. Monitor, check and verify what your child tells you about their grades, assignments and projects due. Hair picks and electronic devices are not permitted here at school. We ask that they remain at home. Starting second semester, parents will be required to come to school for these items if students are found breaking the rules. Study time in a quiet part of the home is very important. Try to help by turning off or down music/TV. No phone calls and checking their work is a must. The difference between an F and an A is about one hour of controlled study time each night. Seniors, don't forget your Senior dues need to be paid to Mrs. Barnett. Now is the time colleges and universities look really hard at grades, attendance and behavior records. Are yours worth looking at ? Remember my saying: "do what you been doing and you'll get what you been getting" Change and you will succeed !

Race to the Top Update

November 2011 Mr. Hawley shared his impressions from the State RttT Conference. He talked about Maysville High School’s presentation and how they turned around their school by increasing OGT scores and ACT scores and changing their overall school climate by emphasizing ACT Quality Core in their core classes. Also he shared his impressions from the new state teacher and principal evaluation system/drafts. We decided to visit Maysville High School with Mr. Sechen, Mr. Hawley and Mr. Kapki.

December 2011 We had a short meeting and decided to defer the discussion about the Maysville visit to the next meet-ing. We decided to create the RttT website by the next meeting.
