The completion of Hammond Hall at the end ofDecember was met with great satisfaction yet therewere many small details necessary before operation. The month of January was full of last-minute itemsand inspections ensuring the residents could safelybe transitioned to the new building. On February5th, 25 residents were moved in the first wave of thistransition. The transition was closely monitored byIDPH and the execution of the plan was seamless. This coordinated effort included participants fromresident volunteers, our nursing staff, social servic-es, activities, and truck garage. In addition, we hadsupporting teams from American Legion Post #37and Golden Bridges. We currently await theapproval from the Federal VA giving us the greenlight to continue with our second and third transi-tion of residents into Hammond Hall.

Officially kicking off phase one of the recentlycompleted Master Plan, we are in detailed discus-sions with the architectural firm Perkins Eastmanto develop the design and programming concepts forour new skilled and domiciliary buildings. PerkinsEastman brings to the table countless years of expe-rience and examples in designing long-term carefacilities across the nation. They have a 10-monthcontract with the expectation of a preliminary draftdesign of the new buildings in late April. We antic-ipate the new structure to include a centralizedkitchen and dining space, laundry facilities andplenty of multi-purpose space for large and smallercommunity events.

This quarter would not be complete withoutsharing the obvious visit from newly-electedGovernor JB Pritzker. As he entered theAdministration Building, the foyer and hallway waslined with city officials, both past and present, legis-lators, friends, and IVHQ staff. His welcomed visitbegan with a brief meeting with IVHQ and IDVAleadership in which he shared his vision for thefuture. During the meeting, new IDVA Director,Linda Chapa LaVia, commented on her mission toimprove communications by dismantling barrierswithin bureaucratic processes. The Governor indi-cated his full support of IDVA and the constructionat IVHQ. In efforts to ensure the safety of all veter-

ans and Quincy Veterans Home Governor Pritzkersaid he would like to see this entire process expedit-ed during his administration. The briefing was fol-lowed by a bus tour of the current campus with astop in Fifer and the water treatment center, andending at Hammond Hall.

From Hammond Hall to the HOK Master plan tothe Bridging Firm... The common thread is commit-ment to IVHQ and a high-quality service for our vet-erans. We saw it in the previous governor’s actionsand the follow through with Hammond Hall. We areseeing it with Governor Pritzker with the expeditionof construction of the new buildings. But it begs thequestion, have we, as staff, prepared ourselves forthe next level of service to our veterans? Are wewilling to commit to providing a high level of servicethat may change my current work flow?

As we have seen in Hammond Hall, there aremany new and different processes we have changedfrom our old way of thinking. I can’t help but thinkabout our request to American Legion Post #37 tohelp with the transition of residents to HammondHall. Without hesitation and without questioningwhat was needed, they said yes and then enthusias-tically followed through with their commitment. Arewe committed enough to withstand a little discomfortas we move forward with the many changes certainto challenge us at IVHQ? Are we willing to enthusi-astically embrace those challenges? I believe we are!

One of my favorite holidaysjust passed; St. Patrick’s Day.Patrick was a person who trulyknew what God expected of him. When it comes to St. Patrick mostof us usually think of Ireland, lep-rechauns, shamrocks, green beerand Irish whiskey. But none ofthat really has anything to dowith the real life person of St.Patrick.

Yes there really was a mannamed Patrick, but most of whatwe think we know about Patrickisn’t exactly true. To be honestwith you there’s a lot more“Legend and Myth” out thereabout him than there is truth. For example; I’m not sure Patrickis actually a Saint, not the waymost people think of Saints any-way. I couldn’t find when orwhere he was actually canonizedas a Saint by the CatholicChurch. But that’s ok I still likehim anyway. St. Patrick wasn’tactually from Ireland either. Hewas actually born in a placecalled Dumbarton which today islocated in what we know asScotland, although he did eventu-ally go to Ireland. And Legendhas it that St. Patrick drove allthe snakes out of Ireland, bysome magical power that Godgave him. Well, I’m not surethat’s really true either. So what is true about St. Patrick?Well we do know that he wasborn in what is now Scotlandsomewhere around 389 AD. Andwhen he was about 16 years oldhe was kidnapped and taken toIreland by some pagan Irish

raiders and sold into slavery, where he served as a shepherd forhis master for about 6 years. Asa young teen Patrick wasn’t par-ticularly religious, and he is saidto have even turned his back onChrist, even though his owngrandfather was a priest. Butafter he was captured he began topray – and pray hard. It is saidthat He would pray every day –all day long while he was tendinghis master’s sheep and He soonbecame a Christian and gave con-trol of his life to Jesus, eventhough almost everyone he knewin Ireland was of the Pagan Druidfalse religion.

Eventually Patrick managedto escape from Ireland. When hemade it back home, he began totrain for a lifetime of ministry. He did eventually become a priestand when Patrick was in his mid-forties God did something verystrange. God told Patrick that Hewanted him to go back to Irelandand tell the good news – theGospel of Jesus Christ - to thepeople there in Ireland.

Now keep in mind the peopleof ancient Ireland were not reallya very nice bunch of people.Remember – they had cruelly kid-napped Patrick when he was six-teen. And Druidism was themain religion of the people there.Druid’s practiced all kinds ofweird ceremonies back then, some of which may actually haveincluded human sacrifice. Wouldyou go back to people like that totell them their religion is a hoax? But Patrick did, because that’s

what God told him to do. That isa model of obedience. And Godblessed him for it. With the helpof Patrick many of the Irish peo-ple came to know Jesus, andIreland became a ChristianNation. Patrick’s influence wasso great that today almost every-one associates St. Patrick withIreland.

God was able to work inPatrick’s life and great thingshappened to many people andtheir lives were changed becausehe was obedient. And when wefinally make up our minds thatwe too will be obedient, well thenguess what, people will come toknow Jesus and many lives willbe changed as well.

At the end of the Gospel ofMatthew (28:19-20) Jesus ChristHimself told His disciples, “… goand make disciples of all thenations, baptizing them in thename of the Father and the Sonand the Holy Spirit. Teach thesenew disciples to obey all the com-mands I have given you…” Thatwas the task that Jesus Himselfset before his disciples. And real-ly that is exactly what St. Patrickdid in ancient Ireland. Now I’mnot trying to say that this so-called St. Patrick is equal to theApostles and we should look tohim the same as we would look atPeter, James, or John, or any ofthe other disciples – that’s notwhat I’m saying - but what I amsaying is this; God gave his peo-ple a commission - a task to do.And we’ve got to make up ourminds. Are we just going readthat verse and say, “oh well youknow, that was great for theApostles back then, but that’s notwhat I was called to do.” Ormaybe we might say somethinglike, “well Patrick was especiallycalled and equipped by God to bea great missionary – I’ve neverreceived such a great call like Hedid.”

And if that’s what you’rethinking, then there’s a greatIrish word that describes thosethoughts. Thinking like that iswhat the Irish would call “abunch of Blarney” – or foolish-ness. It’s just foolishness to thinkthat the Great Commission thatJesus Christ, Himself gave to Hisdisciples doesn’t apply just thesame to you and me today.

Now, is God asking you topack up all your belongings andmove to Ireland and be a mission-

ary to the pagan people there?Probably not! He’s pretty muchalready covered that one with oldPatrick. But could God be tellingyou to go next door and tell thatneighbor about Jesus Christ? YesHe is. Or maybe Jesus is tellingyou to tell that kid down thestreet that there’s something elsein life worth living for. Maybeyou’ve got an aunt or an uncle orbrother or sister or a grandchildwho doesn’t have a clue what hol-idays like Easter and Christmas

are really about? Right now isyour chance to tell them. Youknow, Easter is coming up, andmost people are a little morereceptive to spiritual talk aroundEaster and Christmas. Whoknows maybe you could even con-vince them that St. Patrick’s Dayis actually a religious holiday.God has given you a mission todo. Will you be obedient just likePatrick was obedient?

Administrator Troy Culbertson encourages residents and staff to welcome thenew IVHQ Medical Director - Mrs. Hally Anderson, MD. Dr Anderson is aQuincy Medical Group physician who is serving as our CollaborativePhysician for our Nurse Practitioners and serves as the Medical Director forall of our Veterans. New IDVA DirectorLinda Chapa LaVia

Residents and staff of the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincywelcome new IDVA Director Linda Chapa LaVia. Director ChapaLaVia was appointed by Governor JB Pritzker on February 15th.

Shortly after the appointment, Director Chapa LaVia visited theIllinois Veterans Home at Quincy. Her initial visit as IDVADirector was not, however, her first visit to the Home. Prior to herappointment, she served 17 years as a state representative fromAurora and was the chairman of the house committee on Veterans’

Affairs. She made several trips to the Home in that capacity and was instrumental in the housepassing legislation that authorized over $50 million in reconstruction efforts at the Quincy Home.

Director Chapa LaVia served in the United States Army as a commissioned officer and later theIllinois Army National Guard.

If anyone is interested involunteering, please stop in theoffice (located in the AndrewBuilding) or give me a call (217-222-8641 ext 386). There are somany different opportunities foreveryone - we want your talent!

For all of our volunteersthat donate their time to thehome, THANK YOU!

In 2018, we had over 17,000volunteer hours. From drivingthe bus, popping popcorn, escorting residents to medicalappointments, playing games, assisting at a special event, hosting bingo and other games, singing, sewing, helping withhobbies, one to one visits, visit-ing and helping with the moveto Hammond Hall. Those arejust a few of the tasks our vol-unteers do.

Volunteers are an integralpart of bringing the feeling ofhome to our Home.

As our way of saying thankyou, please save the date April17th for our VolunteerAppreciation Event. Our themewill be “Name that Show”. Staytuned for more details!
