HAYDN,JOSEPH - Die Schopfung (The Creation)

Following Mahler’s Ninth and Bruckner’s Fifth, this live recording of Joseph Haydn’s «The Creation» is already the third CD recording to feature the masterly Bernard Haitink at the helm of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Haitink has been a guest conductor of the orchestra for over 50 years now. Haydn’s oratorio «The Creation», first performed in 1798, instantly became an established part of the repertoire and the greatest success the composer had ever experienced. Today, it still ranks as an important test for any ensemble of soloists, choir and orchestra. The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and its Choir joined forces for this recording, together with a team of renowned soloists. The solo parts of the three archangels are sung by renowned soprano Camilla Til-ling, Mark Padmore, who can also be heard in the BR-KLASSIK recording of Britten’s «War Requiem», and bass-baritone Hanno Müller-Brachmann who, as a representative of the younger generation, is enjoying a remarkable operatic, lieder and concert career.

LANG,DAVID - Love Fail

Composed by David Lang, love fail is a meditation on the timelessness of love that weaves together details from the story of Tristan and Isolde with more modern sources. The re-cording also spotlights the singular and magical sound of the vocal quartet Anonymous 4, whose longstanding commitment to medieval music and historical scholarship has been acclaimed worldwide. The music and libretto pull together narratives of love from such sources as Lydia Davis, Marie de France, Gottfried von Strassburg, Béroul, Thomas of Britain and Richard Wagner. love fail was commissioned by The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 2012 Next Wave Festival, The International Festival of Arts & Ideas, The John F. Kennedy Center Abe Fortas Memorial Fund, The Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, The Wake Forest University/Secrest Artists Series, and Hancher Performances at the University of Iowa.

CHAUSSON/ BRAHMS/HINDEMITH/… - Melancholy

Melancholy, that wavering mood Heinrich Heine aptly captured in the line ‘I don’t know what it means that I am so sad’ in his poem Lorelei, has inspired countless artists, especially poets and musicians. Above all in the genre of song. this recital now presents a splendid selection, and the program offers many a find that is rather on the periphery of the cus-tomary song repertoire. Moreover, the palette of colour is expanded by the fact that the accompaniment is not only entrusted to the piano, but is also in a chamber music version. Mezzo-soprano Lucia Duchoňová hails from Trnava in western Slovakia. Her first solo CD featuring compositions by Joaquin Turina was nominated for a Grammy Award in the cate-gory ‘The Best Vocal Performance’ in 2010.

Sambala

Whoever watches the Samba Schools parading in Rio de Janeiro nowadays many times does not perceive the Samba’s musical richness both as a musical and literary genre. This is due to the Samba Schools percussions rhythmic power that “submerges” the harmonic accom-paniment and also the grandiose visual appeal. The Samba is, however, in its origins a very sophisticated musical form from a poetic, instrumental and harmonic viewpoint. A typi-cal expression of urban popular culture whose origins go back to the most popular styles among Rio de Janeiro’s inhabitants, then the country’s capital city. Born in Blumenau, Brazil, Cristiane Roncaglio studied Classical Voice and also Photography. German as well as Italian opera, oratorios, and lieder belong to the wide scope of Cristiane Roncaglio´s repertoire. And yet, she is enthusiastic about Brazilian music, Bossa Nova as well as Música Popular Brasileira.

BACH,CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL - Rondos & Fantasias

Christine Schornsheim about her recording:“I found it more exciting to concentrate only on a larger number of the Rondos and Fanta-sias, as the imaginative and improvisatory component interests me particularly. Moreover, every individual piece is a valuable and unique specimen…… I opted for a Tangentenflügel because Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s music is decidedly diverse in character. It is difficult to present it on only one of the possible instruments harpsichord, fortepiano or clavichord. In my view, what characterizes a Tangentenflügel is that it unites all the timbres of stringed period keyboard instruments, so to speak. It can sound as gentle as a clavichord, even the harpsichord can almost be imitated, and the sound of an early fortepiano can similarly be produced.”

MENDELSSOHN,FELIX - Schauspielmusiken : Incidental Music

Apart from his ingenious music for Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Felix Mendelssohn’s incidental music for plays is still overshadowed by his symphonies and vocal works. With his hallmark recording of the complete oratorios and choral works, Frie-der Bernius has long ago proved that should be considered one of the world’s Mendelssohn experts. Bernius has recorded three of the composer’s incidental music compositions in the past years, demonstrating the extraordinary quality of this far too little-known music. These highly praised recordings are now published for the first time in an attractive box.

LAHUSEN/BANZER/KREISLER/… - Nachtgedanken : Nocturnal Thoughts

The Calmus Ensemble and Elke Heidenreich became acquainted during an engagement on a cruise ship, and the idea of collaborating on a musical-literary project was born. The “Nach-tgedanken” (Nocturnal Thoughts) deal with the thoughts that – sometimes unbidden – take possession of our minds during the night, be they more or less beautiful, stimulating or frightening, funny or sad. Music alternates with the spoken word. In addition to her own writings, Elke Heidenreich reads texts by Erich Kästner, Ludwig Tieck, Marcel Proust and others. The musical contributions consist almost entirely of music that was composed or ar-ranged for the Calmus Ensemble: Harald Banter composed jazz ballads on poems by Charles Baudelaire and set Christian Morgenstern’s Galgenlieder to music. Sebastian Krause, who sings altus in the Calmus Ensemble, arranged several well-known chansons by Georg Kreis-ler for the ensemble. The result is a wonderful production, suitable for reveries and plea-sure, pondering over and hearing again and again – not only on mellow summer evenings.

VIVALDI/AKHUNOV - The Seasons

The theme of the seasons remains topical for composers of any period, although the concertos by Antonio Vivaldi are still the most popular works on the subject. On this album they are complemented with an original reflection of the contemporary Russian composer Sergey Akhunov. Composed in the genre of violin concerto, The Seasons in five movements by Akhunov differs from Vivaldi’s work in terms of form and mood, and most probably refers to Kim Ki-duk’s motion picture of the same name. The Seasons of the 18th and 21st centuries are performed by Julia Igonina and Partita.Julia Igonina, one of the best representatives of the young generation of violinists, graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, continued her studies as a trainee and assistant under professor Eduard Grach (she is currently his assistant) and also attended Shlomo Mintz’s master classes in Israel. Igo-nina is a prize winner of several international competitions and a soloist of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. She combines her solo concert career with the participation in the New Russian Quartet and actively collaborates with contemporary composers.Partita, the Ensemble of Soloists, includes young talented musicians who despite their relatively short artistic careers have played at some of the best venues of Russia and Europe to much critical acclaim and premiered a number of works composed specially for them by today’s composers.

CHOPIN/SCHUBERT/LISZT/SCRIABIN

“Piano poet” was the name given to Vladimir Sofronitsky by Heinrich Neuhaus, outstanding pianist and teacher. “You can ‘disagree’ with him, … however, you cannot but listen to him, – he wrote, – and when listening, you cannot help feeling and realising that this kind of art is extraordinary and unique, that it possesses traits of supreme beauty”…Vladimir Sofronitsky’s mastery is a comprehensive phenomenon of the 20th-century Rus-sian music, which is difficult to fit into the Procrustean bed of “pianism”. Many perfor-mances by Sofronitsky (particularly those in the Scriabin museum and other small halls) were beyond ordinary “concerts” for the audience: listeners had a feeling of complete unity with the work, with the spiritual world of its author, embodiment of Music and Beauty…Being an unchallenged interpreter of works by Alexander Scriabin, seeming to hold the keyto all secrets of his music, Sofronitsky was no less profound in embodying the worlds of the musical Romanticism, conceived the dramatic power of Beethoven`s sonatas, was a remarkable and ingenious interpreter of music by Sergei Prokofiev and other contemporary composers.

Beethoven/Scriabin/Arapov

This musician’s performance is notable for particular concentration and complete immersion in the musical element. His manner amazes with perfection of technique in the absence of external effects of any kind. Grigory Sokolov is one of the few contemporary pianists who always include intellectual piano masterpieces in their programmes, which requires a special mood from both the performer and the audience – Beethoven’s sonatas of the latter period, J.S. Bach’s The Art of Fugue, Brahms’s last pieces. Most of Sokolov’s recordings were made from live broadcasts in Leningrad/St. Petersburg and Mos-cow – he prefers concert performances to studio work. This set combines the large-scale dramatic canvases of Beethoven’s sonatas with the restless roman-tic heroics of Scriabin’s Third Sonata where Sokolov emphasizes the Promethean spirit without era-sing the individuality of the Russian genius of the 20th century. However, what makes this set particularly interesting is Grigory Sokolov’s recordings of the works by his contemporary, Leningrad composer Boris Arapov. The piano sonata and concerto for violin, piano, percussion and chamber orchestra recorded by the pianist are released on Melodiya for the first time.

TCHAIKOWSKY,PIOTR ILLITCH - Sleeping Beauty

This ballet was finished in 1889 and has been one of the greatest masterpieces of musical and ballet art for more than a hundred years now. Tchaikovsky created the ballet in association with the outs-tanding ballet master Marius Petipa who later worked on The Nutcracker as well.“The matter is not only about slapping up some commonplace ballet music. I have the impudenceto conceive a genre masterpiece”, Tchaikovsky wrote. The Sleeping Beauty stands out not onlyfor its perfect synthesis of music and choreography inspired by the plot of Charles Perrot’s fairy tale. Tchaikovsky created a new type of “symphonized ballet” where the images evolve and the main idea of the victory of good over evil is realized through musical means. This is what makes The Sleeping Beauty so popular in concerts too, where it, as a rule, sounds as a symphonic suite. This recording made in 1980 by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conductedby Evgeny Svetlanov as part of the Anthologyof Russian Symphonic Music presents a complete score of Tchaikovsky’ ballet, including the numbers usually omitted in the choreographic productions. You have a chance to hear a truly remarkable per-formance of The Sleeping Beauty as it was conceived by the composer.

MOLCHANOV,KIRILL - Dawns here are quiet

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Kirill Molchanov’s opera The Dawns Here Are Quiet. The composer of the opera attained his nationwide fame thanks to, first of all, his lyrical songs, which are now considered a golden repertoire for academic and popular singers alike (There Are So Many Golden Lights, No Hiding from People in the Village, Here Come the Soldiers, Heart, Be Quiet and many others). Meanwhile, Kirill Molchanov wrote eight operas to his own librettos, ballets Macbeth and Three Cards, and music for theatre productions and motion pictures, including true gems of the domestic cinematograph (It Happened in Penkovo, On Seven Winds, We’ll Live Till Monday). The opera is based on Boris Vasiliev’s short novel of the same name. It is a stirring story of a tragic demise of young female anti-aircraft gunners first published in 1969, which is still one of the most widely read books about the Great Patriotic War. In 1972, Stanislav Rostotsky’s famous film with music by Kirill Molchanov premiered in cinemas across the country. The opera is composed in a simple and accessible language. However, Zhenya’s romance to the poem Wait for Me by Konstantin Simonov is the most popular piece from the opera – without any direct link to the plot, this fragment is a generalized symbol of millions of people whose lives and feelings were cut short by the war.

SPOHR,LOUIS - Die letzten Dinge: Oratorium nach worten der HL. Schrift

The Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra dedicates itself here to a “forgotten master”. In drastic, enigmatic images of the Apocalypse of St. John, Louis Spohr’s oratorio The Last Judgement deals with the fundamental questions of humanity: justice, responsibility and redemption.Shortly after its world premiere, one could say that this work was an international success. Since the Spohr Year of 2009 it has returned to concert stages all over the world and was performed brilliantly in Salzburg on 6 June 2013. OehmsClassics presents a live recording here of this concert from the Mozarteum.

BRUCKNER,ANTON - Studien-Symphony

The Study Symphony is a summing-up of the craftsmanship acquired by Anton Bruckner – it did not particularly serve the development of his own artistic profile.“It is”, evaluates his biographer Matthias Hansen, “as if Bruckner – one last time – wanted to play through what he had learned, taking great trouble and care not to forget the slightest detail”. Here, Bruckner tested the limits of the classical-romantic models, accordingto Hansen, “with a ‘borrowed’ looseness and flexibility, even with elegance” that he then dropped with the Symphony No.0.

RACHMANINOV,SERGUEI - Monna Vanna, Act 1.; Songs

Ondine releases a new recording of Sergei Rachmaninov’s (1873-1943) rarely heard unfinished opera Monna Vanna. In this recording the opera is performed on a newer edition by Gennadi Belov and conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy, an iconic artist for many decades and an expert in Russian music.• Second part of this disc consists of seven songs by Rachmaninov (including the hauntingly beautiful Vocalise), featuring, as Ashkenazy’s personal wish, the Finnish soprano Soile Isokoski accompanied on the piano by Vladimir Ashkenazy.• Rachmaninov wrote the 1st Act of his Monna Vanna opera in 1907 while writing some of his major works: the Symphony No. 2 and Piano Sonata No. 1. It was the only major score that the composer took with him into his exile in the USA after the 1917 revolution. However, Rachmaninov never completed the work and upon his death the opera fragment fell into oblivion. The work was finally premiered in New York in 1984.• The opera, based upon a play by Maurice Maeterlinck, is performed in the recording by the Mos-cow Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, Students Choir and Opera Soloists. This is a premiere recor-ding of the opera sung in Russian, the language in which Rachmaninov intended it to be performed.

Johann Strauss

The Viennese Waltz, the oldest of the ballroom society dances, emerged from the „German Dance“ and – possibly – also from the „Landler“ during the second half of the 18th century. In the numerous establishments of the Viennese suburbs, the ensembles of rivaling bandmasters Joseph Lanner (1801 – 1843) and Johann Strauss I (1804 – 1849) publicly played dance music and hence they may be considered as the actual „inventors“ of the Viennese Waltz as it is commonly understood and loved all over the world today. After the early death of Johann Strauss Sr., his oldest son Johann (1825 – 1899), the „Waltz King“, assumed leadership of the orchestra and diversified the area of activity significantly. The youngest of the sons of Strauss Sr., Eduard (1835 – 1916), also trained as a musician and joined his brother‘s ensemble at the age of 20. The middle son, Josef (1827 – 1870), had different plans for his life and became a technician. However, when in 1852 his brother returned from a concert tour completely exhausted, Josef needed to step in as conductor of the Strauss orchestra the following year. He composed his first waltz, believing it would be his last. Nevertheless, as his brother Johann travelled abroad more and more frequently, Josef needed to substitute for him in Vienna. At the same time, he took violin lessons, learned to compose properly and thus became a musician as well. As a composer he was certainly on par with his older brother. His dances often display a certain wistfulness and sometimes seem to come straight from Schubert.

Roy Nathanson’s Sotto Voce : Complicated Day

Traditional song structures never defined Nathanson’s free and post-bop jazz repertoire, but with Complicated Day, the inimitable artist breaks into new territory. Only in the fas-cinating musical mind of Nathanson could such an innovative compositional mix of songs be conjured up. Sotto Voce reaches beyond the cosmos to an enigmatic world where free jazz meets the far stretches of the human voice, yet resides within classic songwriting ar-rangements that emulate stories of romance, reflection, and hope. The band’s idiosyncra-tic sound is masterfully realized by Nathanson on alto, soprano and baritone saxophones; Curtis Fowlkes on trombone; Tim Kiah playing bass; Jerome Harris on guitar and banjolin; Napoleon Maddox handling the beatbox; and Sam Bardfeld on violin. Each member contri-butes background vocals and nearly all sing lead on at least one track on Complicated Day.

Elliott Sharp’s Terraplane

A central figure in the avant-garde and experimental music scene in New York City for over 30 years, Elliott Sharp has released over eighty-five recordings ranging from orchestral music to blues, jazz, noise, no wave rock, and techno music. Elliott Sharp’s TERRAPLANE synthesizes the intersection of country and urban blues with Mississippi fife & drum bands, post-Mingus/Ayler jazz and the rhythmic force of the groove, from the shuffle to contem-porary dance music. Up until I heard Sharp’s original Terraplane, I had no clue that he could also play the blues. With his electric power trio, the original Terraplane incarnation, he blew through the gene-rations, sliding like Robert Johnson in his kitchen, doing the Texas blues shuffle a la Stevie Ray Vaughan, and so forth. Sharp has an encyclopedic understanding of the blues guitar, including its voice-like phrasing, its elastic intonation, its tension and release, and the all important «»cry»». He approaches improvisation from a jazz perspective without making the exercise the least bit academic.

MOZART/VERDI/BELLINI/ROSSINI - Hibla Gerzmava: soprano

A strong voice, a bright dramatic gift, a passionate temperament, creative courage and a precise sense of a role – all these virtues are combined by the name of the unique opera singer Hibla Gerz-mava, a People’s Artist of Russia and People’s Artist of the Republic of Abkhazia.Hibla Gerzmava is an opera singer of a world scale, a remarkable actress and versatile musician. In 1994, she graduated from the Moscow Conservatory where she majored in solo singing under pro-fessors Irina Maslennikova and Evgenia Arefieva, and completed her post-graduate course under Maslennikova in 1996.Since 1995 Hibla has been a soloist of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre in Moscow debuting as Musetta in Puccini’s La bohème. The singer’s comingto the theatre signified the first stellar round of her singing career in many ways thanks to a fruitful creative tandem with director Alexander Titel. That rare creative union gave the stage of the theatre bright operatic roles such as Adina in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Musetta and Mimi and Puccini’s La bohème, Louisa in Prokofiev’s Bethrotal in a Monastery, Rosina in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Lyudmila in Glinka’s Rusland and Lyudmila and, of course, a poignant and passionate Violetta in Verdi’s La traviata. The singer has toured with the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre in Korea, the United States and other countries. Today, the Russian prima donna is a guest starof the state opera houses of Vienna, Paris, Rome and Bavaria, Metropolitan Opera and Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.Hibla has collaborated with Moscow Virtuosi led by Vladimir Spivakov, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia and pianist Daniil Kramer’s jazz trio, performed with such prominent Russian and foreign musicians and conductors as Lorin Maazel, Antonio Pappano, Marco Armiliato, Ádám Fischer, Vladimir Spivakov, Valery Gergiev, Alexander Rudin, Mikhail Pletnyov, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Vasily Sinaisky and others.
