Yamaha’s outboards are constantly evolving. Growing more powerful yet increasingly fuel-efficient. As horsepower and resulting internal engine pressures increase, proper lubrication becomes even more critical for reliability and long life. Count on Yamalube, Yamaha’s line of high-quality oils, to keep pace with advancing outboard technology. That’s exactly why we’ve recently reformulated our popular Yamalube Four Stroke FC-W®. This formulation is built to handle the unique demands of today’s four-stroke outboards. Available in 10W-30 (all-purpose) and 20W-40 (warm-climate) weights, Yamalube 4M’s low- phosphorous formulation is fortified with molybdenum compounds. These compounds help reduce the wear caused by sudden changes in engine speed and sustained high-rpm operation, common in four strokes. In fact, this formula has been shown to reduce wear by 85% over the previous formulation. It also features a proprietary blend of corrosion-inhibitors, shear-stable polymers, anti-foaming agents, detergents and dispersants, to maintain the proper lubricity and start-up protection that four-stroke outboards demand.

Yamalube Four Stroke FC-W is engineered to provide dependable, long-life protection while enabling your engine to deliver easier starts and high performance.

4

Better Marine ProtectionWhile many outboards have the displacement of high-performance automotive engines, the marine environment offers special challenges. Premium lubricity is critical when you’re operating under high loads, extended full-throttle operation, and salt air. Yamalube Four Stroke is FC-W certified, the NMMA® (National Marine Manufacturers Association) performance standard created especially for four-stroke marine engines.

Better LubricationYou need it. And you get it with Yamalube Four Stroke FC-W. More anti-wear additives than passenger car motor oils, for better bearing protection. Polymers that resist breaking down even under the severe conditions outboards face every day. Superior rust and corrosion inhibitors. The highest amount of detergents and dispersants, to keep your engine clean inside. Superior lubrication even in cold water under low-speed trolling conditions. Yamalube Four Stroke FC-W is simply better all-around.

Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT™) – the actuator rotates to advance and retard intake camshaft timing to dramatically increase low end and mid-range torque.

VTS® Switch – Variable Trolling rpm Switch on the Multi-function Tiller Handle or Command Link / Command Link Plus tachometer allows the operator to adjust trolling rpm in 50 rpm increments. The engine must be equipped with a tiller handle, Command Link or Command Link gauges to adjust the engine’s rpm.

The following chart lists current models that are VTS compatible and the RPM range that it functions.

GlossaryYamaha Marine Waist Driveshaft – a specially designed driveshaft that is narrower

in the centre section and thicker on each end. This helps the driveshaft to temporarily bend when the propeller strikes a hard object and return to its proper shape, rather than breaking.

Warning System – monitors for engine overheat, low oil pressure and over-rev, automatically reducing maximum rpm to 2,000, illuminating a warning, and sounding an audible horn (depending on model).

Water-cooled Rectifier/Regulator – reduces the generated heat with water cooling helps keep the electrical/battery charging system reliable and durable.

Water-sealed Outer Wall – reduces exhaust noise and enhances cooling which protects the exhaust system against corrosion.

Water Separator – separating water from fuel helps prevent water intrusion into the engine to increase outboard reliability and durability.

Wet Sump – a pressurized oil delivery system using an oil pump. Its compact design is very reliable and durable.

Yamaha Diagnostic System – a laptop computer is connected to the Engine Control Module for easier diagnosis and accurate outboard serviceability.

Y-COP® (Immobilizer) – disables the ignition system via an operator-controlled key fob. A simple command via the wireless key fob enables the ignition system.

YDC 30 Aluminum Alloy – (Yamaha Die Cast) a proprietary blend of aluminum and other alloys that provides great strength and corrosion resistance.

1-piece Lightweight Cowl Design with Ram Air – provides aggressive styling with a functional performance air intake system.

3-Star C.A.R.B. (Ultra low emissions) – meets the California Air and Resources Board requirements for the year 2008. Only applies to the state of California. All Yamaha outboards are 3-Star C.A.R.B. rated.

• The 2.8-litre four-cylinder powerhead employs double-overhead cams, four valves per cylinder and counterbalance shafts for extra smooth performance.

• These four-stroke outboards offer fuel consumption that is 30 to 40 percent better than that of traditional carbureted two-strokes.

• Because it’s a four-stroke, there’s no need for an external oil tank. That’s a huge weight savings, which means less weight and more storage room in the boat for tackle and other items.

• These outboards have mechanical control for easy, convenient rigging with most bass, bay and flats boats; with a choice of analog, 6Y5 digital or Command Link® gauges.

Rigging Kit Order Guide

150

The Yamaha Rigging Kit Order Guide is designed to help you select the rigging kits needed to install a new remote control outboard motor(s) and estimate the cost of the components. The content relates to Analog, Conventional LCD, Command Link and Command Link Plus systems and the information provided represents the most common applications found in the Canadian market. For further options and rigging parts availability, contact Yamaha.

How to choose rigging kits:

First – Determine the type of remote control required for the application (side mount, binnacle etc.) and in case of Command Link, whether the engine shift and throttle system is Mechanical or Electronic (DEC). In case of Mechanical, you need to consider the shift/throttle cable length, and for DEC, whether the application requires a second station or not.

Second – What type of instrument does the customer prefer: Analog or Digital Multi-Function. In case of Command Link, multiple styles are available to suit a wide array of boat designs. Available options such as round or new 6YC designs, additionally a multi-function colour display is exclusively available for Command Link Plus compatible engine(s).

Third – Select the applicable rigging kits for the engine(s) and the desired system. Refer to the diagram on the opposite page to find the applicable page from this Rigging Kit Order Guide and follow the easy steps. Applications are provided for current models and first divided into two: single or twin engine application, then broken down by systems.

Propellers

Shift Dampener System (SDS™)Yamaha’s patent-pending Shift Dampener System uses a unique, splined rubber hub and special aft washer (cam) to distribute and absorb the forces and the resulting sounds and vibrations that are normally associated with shifting an outboard into gear. The result: far quieter and smoother, ‘clunk free’ shifting.

Currently available on the following propeller families: • Talon SS Series F70 to F115, T50/T60 • Talon Series (aluminum) F70 to F115, T50/T60 • Reliance Series F150 to F200 • Saltwater Series II 200 hp V6 and up • Saltwater Series HS4 200 hp V6 and up • Saltwater Series XL 5.3 L V8 F350/F300 • Saltwater Series XL4 5.3 L V8 F350/F300 • Saltwater Series XL4-HP 5.3 L V8 F350/F300

All of these propellers are renowned for their durability and superior mid-range fuel efficiency on larger offshore boats, along with excellent anti-ventilation characteristics for better handling in rough seas. Now they’re known for being super-quiet, too.

How to Pick a Prop

173172

PropellersYamaha Marine

How to Pick a PropWhen it comes to ‘proper propping’, there’s no magic bullet or one particular prop that is perfect for all boat types and applications. This is due primarily to a long list of variables, but there are ways to ‘hone in’ on what you need.

As a general rule, the correct propeller will allow your engine to reach the upper portion of the WOT (wide open throttle) range specified by the manufacturer without exceeding it, with a normal-to-heavy load. For example, if your outboard says WOT is 5,000-6,000 rpm, you need a prop that will allow your engine to turn between approximately 5,700 and 6,000 rpm with your average load in the boat. Be sure to account for things such as fuel, full bait and/or live wells, batteries, passengers and all gear, including safety gear (anchors, ropes, fire extinguishers, etc.)

1 | To begin, check Yamaha’s Performance Bulletins at yamaha-motor.ca. Choose the type of boat most similar to yours (or the one you want), and note what propeller is listed.

2 | Next, check out the applicable propeller solutions for your outboard in the propeller charts located at the bottom of the website’s landing

page (there’s other great propeller information in here, too). Look for the same series name and pitch of propeller as the Performance Bulletin, then adjust the pitch depending on weight and altitude (heavier weight or higher altitude, pitch down… light or low, pitch even or slightly up). Each inch of propeller pitch is equal to approximately 100 +/- 50 rpm.

4 | It goes without saying that on-water testing is always best, as each application is different. That’s where your Yamaha dealer comes in. They’ll be able to help you determine the prop that’s right for you, and may even have the means necessary to test a few. You can find Yamaha Marine dealers on our website. Give them a call to discuss your particular situation. If you can, make sure to have handy any of the above information you’ve recorded, such as:

• Boat make, model and year

• Engine model and Primary Identification Number

• Current prop size and style

• Current maximum rpm at wide open throttle

• Typical and maximum loads (weights) carried

3 | Don’t see a Performance Bulletin for your type of boat? Look on the outside barrel for the pitch or remove the prop and look on the inside of the hub for the propeller size, then consult the charts and adjust the pitch accordingly.

Propeller Terminology

175

PropellersYamaha Marine

Propeller TerminologyDiameterDiameter means the total width of the “circle” at the blade tips as the propeller spins. A larger diameter pushes more water and reaches deeper into the water, so they’re typically used on large, heavy boats or ones with high engine-mounting heights. A smaller diameter is usually used on lighter-weight boats, where the prop operates lower in the water or when a gain in engine RPM is desired. Proper diameter for each prop model is determined by the propeller’s design and intended application.

PitchPitch is the distance (in inches) a particular prop would theoretically travel in one full revolution, as if traveling through a solid. A lower pitch will have greater acceleration and “pushing power” but a lower top speed, while a higher pitch prop will provide less acceleration, but a greater potential for higher top speeds. The correct propeller will allow your engine to reach the upper portion of the WOT range specified by the manufacturer with a normal-to-heavy load (without exceeding it). Each inch of pitch is equal to approximately 150 +/- 50 rpm.

RakeRake is the angle of the blades in relation to the propeller’s barrel, or center, and is expressed in degrees. A high- rake propeller is best-suited for high engine-mount applications by helping reduce ventilation and increasing bow lift. Too much rake, however, strains the engine, decreases hole shot and can produce negative performance and handling results.A propeller with a low rake angle will cause less strain on the engine, resulting in potentially better hole shot and higher WOT operating RPM.

SizePropeller size is characteristically expressed in two numbers: diameter and pitch (expressed in inches). The diameter is the first number. The second number is the pitch. So a 14" x 17" prop would measure 14" in diameter with 17" of pitch. This same propeller may be expressed as 14" x 17"x 3, which would indicate a three-blade design.

CupCup is the small curved lip on the blade tip and/or trailing edge. Used in proper amounts, cup helps reduce ventilation and propeller slippage, allowing for higher mounting heights and greater bow lift. Too much cup, however, will cause excessive steering torque and bow lift and limit the engine’s ability to develop and maintain proper RPM.

Blade GeometryBlade geometry refers to the actual shape of the blade or “ear.” By manipulating the blade’s shape, diameter and pitch progression, different performance characteristics are created for each different type and style of propeller.

Blade Surface AreaBlade surface area refers to the total surface of the blades. The more blade surface area a prop has, the more water it pushes for better hole shot and more efficient planing. Having too much blade surface area for the application can create significantly more drag, however, potentially restricting engine RPM and causing negative boat-handling issues.

Propeller Terminology

177176

PropellersYamaha Marine

CavitationCavitation occurs when pressure on the water across the blade’s surface is reduced to the point of becoming water vapor, forming bubbles. If these bubbles burst, they can cause a “cavitation burn” which can deteriorate the propeller’s surface and cause negative performance issues. As this condition can cause an increase in engine RPM, it’s often confused with ventilation.

SlipSlip is the amount of “wasted” energy a particular prop generates, meaning that the actual distance traveled in one full propeller revolution is less than its pitch measurement. It is normally expressed as a “percentage of inefficiency.” A certain amount of slip is engineered into each line of propellers to create different performance characteristics.

Hole Shot“Hole shot” refers to rapid acceleration of the boat, from a standing rest or very slow speed until just on-plane. This is when the engine and the propeller work their hardest.

Gear RatioGear ratio on a marine engine refers to the gears used in the lower unit, much like an automobile’s transmission. The higher the ratio, the more pushing power the engine will produce. The lower the ratio, the more top speed the engine can potentially generate. It is important to choose a propeller that allows the engine to operate near the upper end of the manufacturer’s recommended wide-open throttle (WOT) RPM under normal loads and conditions.

Propeller Terminology (continued)

Number of BladesThree-bladed propellers are the most common, offering good overall performance, top speed and efficiency for most applications. Four blades characteristically provide increased acceleration, enhanced bow- and stern-lift and reduced ventilation. However, four blades typically mean more drag on the engine, resulting in lower top speeds and different handling characteristics.

Three-blade Four-blade

Ventilation Ventilation occurs when air is drawn in around the propeller blades. Normally, this causes a gain in RPM, but a loss of speed since the propeller blades are not biting “clean” water. This most usually occurs during hard cornering or in certain water conditions, such as following seas.

Controlled ventilation can be beneficial, though, in helping the engine gain RPM during hard acceleration. This is engineered into certain propellers only. An example of this is the small holes in the side of the propeller barrel which allow exhaust to intentionally be drawn in around the blades at hole shot. This helps these specific engines generate the higher RPMs they need for proper hole shot performance. Four-stroke engines typically don’t need them.
