We welcome you as a new member of the large family of customers who, formany years, have used our outboard motors; we hope that you will enjoy manypleasant boat trips with your new TOMOS 4.This manual is compiled to give the requisite information on the handling andmaintenance of the motor. Please read through the instructions carefully and followwhen mounting the TOMOS 4 on the boat.The manual also includes lnstructions for making less complicated repairs. Unlessyou are fully familiar with the functioning of the motor you should ngt attemptany repairs not described in the manual. our very extensive network of serviceshops is at your disposal and you will certainly profit by utilizing them whenin doubt.At the close of the boating season we suggest that you hand in your TOMOS 4to one of our service shops for winter storage.The experlence and technical knowledge of our specially trained service person-nel and mechanics is a guarantee that your ToMos 4 witl be inspected and storedin the best manner.And when you then launch your boat agaln you will be assured that your ToMos 4is in top condition.

USE

Mounting the motor on the boat

Secure the motor to the transom ofthe boat with two clamps screws,Fig. 5/1. Ful ly t ighten the clamp screwsby hand. Do not use any tool, forclamp screws may bendWhen transom is not fitted with a cap-ping, the motor should be securedwith two screws as indicated in Fig.5A, into the corresponding recessesat the stern brackets.

lf the transom is too thin 'and theclamp screws do not grip f i rmly, analuminiurn plate or an extra piece ofwood (49 x 90 mm, 5 mm thick) maybe screwed to the transom. lf thetransom is thicker than 58 rnm, it isnecessary to reduce i ts thickness.The reduced parts of the transomshould be precisely cut out as largeas the interspace between the twobrackets, Fig. 5/8. To obviate the riskof losing the motor overboard, secure

it by attaching a steel wire or a nylonrope through the eyelet , Fig. S/g.Themotor should be al igned so that i twi l l hang as near vert ical as possible,when under way, Fig. 6.

running, the propeller should l ie sodeep, that it cannot draw air and causethe motor to race. With the boat un-loaded, the distance between the wa-ter line and the anticavitation plate

should be at least 100 mm.lf the motor should race or the pro-pel ler grip unevenly durlng running, thepropeller should be lowered, either bycutting down the transom or, if thisis not practicable, by using a longshaft motor or, by having separateparts f rom the long shaft executionbuilt-in by an authorized service shop.When the motor is properly mounted,place the fuel tank in a suitable posi-

coupling of the fuel l ine to the nippleas indicated by the arrow, Fig. 7. Theair vent, Fig. 1 /14, on the fuel tankfi l ler cap should be opened severalturns when the motor is in use.

The motor may be locked to the boatby a padlock. Turn the screw clampsso that the holes in the levers arefacing one another in l ine. Pass thepadlock hasp through the holes, as inFig. 8.

$tarting

Before starting make certain that:

- the motor is properly mounted onthe boat

- there is a sufficient quantity offuet in the fuel tank

- the air vent on the fuel tank fi l lercap is properly open

- the water is deep enough for unres-tricted rotation of the propeller

- there are no obstacles in the dire-ct ion of running. As the motor isnot equipped with neutral gear, boatwill start to move immediately.

Pump fuel to the carburettor by sque-ezing the hand pump, Fig. 1/11, a fewtimes until resistance is felt. The floatchamber of the carburettor now con-tains the r ight amount of fuel. Whenthe engine is cold, push the chokelever, Fig. 717 downwards, which re-duces the quantity of air in the car-burettor and eases starting. Whenwarn engine is started, the choke leverremains in posit ion O open. Turnthe twist grip in a clockwise direction,Fig. 1/4, for a third of a turn, pul l thestarter handle slowly, Fig. 1/6, withright hand, unti l the mechanism enga-

ges with the f lywheel. When pul l ingthe starter, take care the motor doesnot ti lt. Never let go of the starterhandle when the cord is pul led out.Let the cord return and be rewoundslowly, for it may damage the starterdevice. As the motor warms up movethe choke lever upwards. When themotor is warm, the choke lever shouldbe in posit ion O open, otherwisethe engine is supplied by too r ich amixture of fuel, which causes loss ofengine power.

RUNNING AHEAD AND ASTERN

The motor is del ivered in non-run-incondit ion and should not be put intoservice immediately without specialprecautions, such as the use of r icheroi l mixture or speed l imitat ion. l t isassumed, however, that the motor isto be used on normal boats and undernormal condit ions.Therefore - operate your new motorat medium speed for the f irst 15-20working hours. In this period the throt-t le can be opened in ful l from t imeto t ime or even for some minuteswhich enables a quicker running- in.Manoeuvring the boat: the motor isdesigned to turn round through 3600.This ability of the motor to pivot thro-ugh a ful l circle makes your boat veryeasy to manoeuvre. When the motoris turned througli 600 to 900 in relationto the steer ing angle, as wel l as inmotion astern, i t is recommended toclose the throt t le a l i t t le. Changingfrom normal running to moving astern:The control handle must be turnedfrom horizontal - over vertical - intoopposite direct ion again towards theboat. Grip the rear handle with f reeha,n'd, arh'd fi;n,ieh,the tu,nn,i,ng. A'fterwhich the thrott le may be opened.

While driving forward a submergedobstruction may be hit by the propel-ler front edge, which causes the motorto ti lt into the boat. A safety devicedoes not exist for reverse direct ion,therefore particular attention mus_t bepaid in observing the depth of waterwhen running astern.Steering resistance may be increasedor decreased by t ightening or loose-ning the adjustment screw, Fig. I /17 .Clockwise turning of the screw givesheavier steering and anti-clockwiseturning gives l ighter steering. l t isadvisable from t ime to t ime to checkthe clamping screws, Fig. 5/1 to ensu-re they are properly tightened.When the fuel tank is in horizontalposit ion, i t cannot be emptied comple-tely. The remains of the fuel (approx.0,5 litre), is intended as a reserve andcan be used only when the fuel tankis placed on the corner (at the sidewhere the suction pipe connector iss ituated, Fig . 1 / 13') .

Stopping the motor

Close the throttle and depress theshort circuit ing button, Fig. 7 /8. l f youwish to take the motor off the boatafter running, or, i f you wish to f ixi t in t i l t posi t ion, i t is advisable to di-sconnect the fuel l ine, Fig. 1 /10, fromthe engine and wait unt i l a l l fuel incarburettor is used up, which preventsflooding of the carburettor when themotor is carr ied or laid down.The motor is t i l table. When runningahead into severe shallows, the motorautomatically ti lts upwards and thusserious damage is general ly avoided.Ti l t ing is also useful when beaching.The motor is f itted with a ti lt rest,Fig. 9, which is intended for holdingthe motor in a f ixed posit ion. When

the motor is t i l ted suff iciently highthe shackle A comes into position mar-ked by B. This posit ion of the motor' faci l i tates the cleaning of the motoror manoeuvring by means of oars inshal low water.When preparing to t i l t the motor tothe position C, it is necessary to take'the

fuel l ine off the engine. Then turnthe motor round through 900. Now thethrottle twist grip is turned upwardsand the t i l t rest A comes into posit ionC. By means of steering resistancescrew, Fig. I /17 , you can prevent themotor turning.

To return the motor to its working po-si t ion, t i l t the motor s l ight ly higher ' ,and push the protruding tongue of theti l t rest as indicated by the arrow,Fig,9, at the same t ime holding thernotor with left hand. By unscrewingthe steering resistance screw, Fig.I /17 , you can turn the motor through900, Reconnrbct the fuel l ine to themotor.

Carrying and laying-up the motor.

NOTE _ IMPORTANT!

When l i f t ing the motor off the boat,and before i ts laying-up, hold i t uprightunti l al l the water has run out of thelower unit . l f this is not done, watercould f ind i ts way into cyl inder whichcan damage its interior.The best *uV to lay-up the motor isto mount it on the wooden stand whichis supplied as part of the packing. l flaid-up in this way, i t is impossible tooi l up the sparking plug which mayrender starting more difficult.

Lighting the boat

On the front side of the power headcover the l ighting connection 6 V, 17 W,Fig. 7/9, is to be found which provesvery useful ' when running at night. Inthe tool accessories bag there is aplastic l ighting plug which can be wi-red to a bulb to provide a cabin l ight.With a suitable rect i f ier the currentcan be used to trickle charge a 6 voltbattery.

MAINTENANGE

General remarks

Regular and careful maintenance isessential to obtain troublef ree opera-t ion of the TOMOS 4. Al l maintenancework described under the fol lowingchapters could be done by the ownerhimself by means of the standardtools. Unless you are an expert your-self you will not be able to detect cer-tain defects at once. But the trainedmechanic wil l save you unnecessaryexpense so take your outboard to ouroff icial agents.

Cleaning and lubrication, dry test (te-

sting out of water) and all other workon maintenance can best be done i fthe motor is mounted on the woodensupport supplied. l t is advisable to sawoff the two vertical parts of woodjust above the transverse board whichis intended for fixing the motor tothe support. Gleani,ng the motor

Clean all outer parts with a soft ragor a sponge and water. Though the en-gine itseef is sufficiently protected, itis advisable to remove the ffiotor coverfrom t ime to t ime and clean the uppersurface of the engine f irst by meansof a wet and then by meqns of a dryFog, especial ly after use in salt water.For cleaning the enamelled surfaces,normal car pol ish should be used,lf you want to remove the engine co-ver, unbuckle the engine cover releaseand push the engine cover s l ight lyupwards. The starter rubber handlewi l l then sl ip through the opening inthe engine cover. The engine coveris in this way removed from the motor.When you want to assemble the engi-

ne cover with the motor upper part, itshould be assembled in reverse orderof removal. First ly place the enginecover into the groove on the f rontpart of the engine below the starterhandle which should be placed in theopening in the cover, Fig. 10. The rearpart of the engine cover should thenbe pushed downwards.

Lubrication

We strongty advise to lubricate the va-rious parts of the TOMOS 4 with themotor oi l SAE 20 and medium grease.Beside the regular changing of the oi lin the propeller housing and lubrica-tion of the starter device, it is neces-sary to lubricate f rom time to timethe clarnping screws, os well as thethrottle twist grip and throttle,controlcable. Threads of clamping screwsshould be lubricated from time to timewith oil or with a thin coat of grease.lf it is obvious that the motor cannotbe pivoted easily, it is necessary tolubricate pivot support. Pour somedrops of oil into the recess, shownby arrow, Fig. 11, even when the ste-ering resistance screw is unscrewedto the en,d.

ENGINE

Combustion of petrol and oi l in two-stroke engines causes a deposit ofcarbon in the interior of the cyl inderhead, in the exhaust bend as well asin the exhaust tube. The formation ofthe carbon depends on the quality ofOil ,U,S€ld (,the,re,f,Ore ,U,S,e the SpeCialoils for two-stroke e,ngines),When the carbon in the combustionchamber is too thick i t is l ikely tocause pre-ignit ion, and also to causebridging of the spark plug gap. Thiswill lead to bad starting and erraticrunning which indicates that the motorrequires decarbonising.To clean the cyl inder head and thetop of the piston remove the blowerhood from the cyl inder head, Fig. 12.In case i t is necessary to clean theexhaust bend, Fig. 13 / A, the intakesi lencer, Fig. 16/A, and engine covercarr ier inset piece, Fig. 1S/8, shouldbe removed. Before this operation,unscrew three screws, Fig. 18/D, andremove the fuel l ine from fuel pump,Fig. 18/C and let i t hang on the lowerpart of the housing, Fig. 13/8. Theearbon can be removed by means ofa steel scratcher or a screwdriver.When cleaning, greatest care must betaken not to damage the piston orcyl inder. No part icle of carbon shouldenter the cyl inder!After the cylinder has been decarboni-sed, the cyl inder head should be re-fitted by crosswise tightening the nuts.

The greatest care should be taken thatexhaust bend cool ing tube, Fig . 13 /D,locates properly in the rubber insetpiece, Fig, 13/E.After use in dirty waters, it is advi-sable from t ime to t ime to check thefunctioning of the cool ing system. So-metimes during operation the vert icaltube becomes overheated (especial ly

the upper part where exhaust gasesenter); so hot that it is impossibleto touch it. This means that dirt and

foreign matter are blocking the pathof the exhaust gases and the watercannot c i rculate. General ly, ' the dir taccumulates at , the water cool inginlet , Fig. 2/20, which can easi ly becleaned. l f the cool ing system is clog-ged by foreign matter, they should beremoved by means of a strong jet ofwater as described under the chapter>gf9y6'g,e of ,Motor<<r

lgn,ition System

For checking and adjust ing the igni t ionsystem, it is necessary to removefirst the complete starting device,Fig.20, and then the fan wheel, Fig.201E. To remove the starter device,i t is necessary to part ial ly unscrewthe two screws which hold the blowerhood. Through the opening of themagneto f lywheel, Fig. 14, i t is pos-qible to adjust the contact breakerpoints, which should be from 0,35 to0,45 mm. Timing advance should beadjusted by rotating the magneto untilthe contact breakers are in the po-si t ion at 1,5 mm before T. D. C. Toadjust the t iming advance i t is neces-sary to use special tools, this shouldtherefore be done by our off icialagents.The correct sparking plug electrodegap is 0,5 0,6 mm, Fig. 15. Adjusti t by means of the adjusting gaugesuppl ied in the tool bag. The r ightchoice of sparking plug is of f unda-mental importance for undisturbedrunning of the motor. The motor isdel ivered with the sparking plugBOSNA F 80 which thermal value cor-responds to a normal loaded motor(runing at ful l thrott le). l f you intendusing your motor for f ishing, i t wi l lwork on minimal thrott le opening.

Therefore a sparking plug with lesserthermal value i . e. BOSNA F 50 shouldbe used.Here are the recommended types ofsparking plug

Fuel System

Maintenance of the fuet system de-mands cleaning not only the carburet-tor but also the diaphragm purnp andthe fuel tank. lf you wish to clean thecarburettor remove the intake si lencer.Unscrew the two screws in the ope-ning of the air intake, Fig, 16 / A. Byl i f t ing, the intake si lencer can beremoved completely. When you wantto rermoun,t 'it, p,laice the ,o,ri'fii,ce of theintake si lencer into the rubber unionsleeve on the carburettor, Fig. 16/8.Then push the intake si lencer intoplace and fix it by means of twoscrews,

lf you want to remove the carburettor,slacken the screw, Fig. 16/D. Removethe carburettor from the inlet bendtaking care not to bend the chokewire, Fig. 17 /A. The choke wire ishooked on the choke and can be veryeasily unhooked by means of a screw-driver. When the carburettor has beenremoved, the f loat chamber can beunscrewed and cleaned.The carburettor must be ref itted ina vert ical posit ion.The slow running speed should beadjusted by loosening the screw, Fig.161E, for 3/4 or of a turn

Then, by t ightening or loosening thescrew, Fig. 16' lC, adjust to the mostconvenient number' of revolut ions for.sf ow running speed. ( 1 s00 1 G00rev/min).The adjustment is correct when themotor 'runs as slow as possible wit-hout stopping. l t ' f f lust then blso im-mediately respond to a fast openingof the throttle.When necessary, the thrott le twistgrip should be dismantled as fol lows:

Release the thrott le control cablef rom the carburettor.Hemove the metal r ing at the endof the rubber grip.

Turn the rubber gr ip in the di-rection of the arrow on the metalr ing and pul l the rubber grip offthe t i l ler handle, by help of ascrewdriver.

Take the greatest care tof i l l the fuel tank with proper andclean fuel mixture and, i f necess ary,pass the fuel mixture through a funnelequipped with a f ine mesh gauze. l fthe motor is to be stored for a lengthyperiod it is recommended to clean thecomplete fuel supply system.

Starting device

To prevent corrosion of the starterdevice i t is necessary to lubricate,from time to time, the parts made ofsteel :

I t is advisable to use the lubr icants:SAE 20 or medium grease. When lu-bricating the recoi l spring and supportit is necessary to remove the star-t ing device cover, Fig. 19 /C, f ixed bythree screws. The cover should bel i f ted very careful ly, for the recoi lspring, when treated carelessly, mayspring out of its support. The starterdevice support should be lubricatedthrough the hole B, Fig. 19. l f otherparts of the starter device are to belubricated, the complete starter deviceshould be removed, (the device isf ixed to the engine by four scr"ewsand two bolts). When the starter de-vice is being removed from the engine

A fine mesh gauze filter is fitted tothe motor fuel d iaphragm pump, Fig.18/ A, in order to prevent the entryof'foreign matter into the carburettor.Ther pump should be detached f romthe motor for cleaning after removingthe engine carr ier inset piece, Fig.18/B (unscrew four screws and remo.ve without detaching the cables). Re-move the screw, Fig. 18/C, removethe cover of the diaphragm pump, whe-reby the mesh gauze f i l ter is nowcompletely accessible. Clean the f i l terin petrol and blow it dry.When reassembling be very carefulnot to damage the seal ing edge of thef i l ter by faul ty posi t ioning. Also, donot t ighten up the screws, which holdthe cover, more than is necessary togive sat isfactory seal ing.A secondf ilter is f itted to the lower part ofthe suction pipe connector in the fueltank, Fig. I /13. This f i l ter wi l l beaccessible for cleaning i f the suctionpipe connector together with the

upper part, the recoi l spring shouldbe covered with the starter devicecover.

I t ' is advisable to lubricate the recoi lspring and starter device support everytwo months during seasonal use. Whenthe season is over, we recommendyou protect the complete starting de-vice against rust.

The starter is designed to last forthe life of the motor, but after Seve-ral year's use the nylon rope maybegin to show signs of wear andshould be replaced. I f i t is obviousthat the nylon rope is worn out, i tshould be replaced by a new one, i fthis is not done the rope may breakat a less opportune moment. Althoughi t is ,not d i f f icul t to do this, the jobshould be done by someone who isfamil iar with the mechanism and wesuggest you take the starter unit toyour TOMOS dealer for this job.

Pr,opeller housing

lf the propeller hits a submergedobstacle, the shear pin wi l l break. l tis then necessary to immediately stopthe motor lest the propeller, hub wearsout too much, especial ly i f i t is notlubricated with water-resistante grease.To replace the broken shear 'pin witha new one, unwind the propeller pla-stic nut (ATTENTION - LEFT HANDTH READ ! ) and remove the propeller.Then f i t the new shear pin, lubricatethe shaft and remount the propeller(spare shear pins are to be found inthe Accessories and tool bug).The quanti ty of. oi l in the propellerhousing should be examined as oftenas possible to ensure that water hasnot penetrated the housing. This check

should be done with the motor in thevertical position.Unscrew the drain screw, Fig. 22, bYmeans of a screwdriver (it is notnecessary to remove it completely). lf

the oil starts to flow past the drainscrew, it means that there is no water

the drain screw and immediately afterthem the oil itself, it means that theseal r ing is st i l l in good condit ion butit should be checked more often. lfplenty of water and emulsion (oil andwater together) f lows past the drainscrew the propeller housing should beemptied completely. Ascertain the de-fect and let the repair be done by aservice workshop. At least every twgmonths during the season and at theend of the season the oil in the pro-pel ler housing should be replaced. Be-fore ref i l l ing, the interior of the pro-pel ler housing should be washed outwith special oi l and not with petrol.

When ref i l l ing the propeller housingwith fresh oi l (approx 100 ccm), ' i t isadvisable to ti lt the motor, togetherwith the wooden support, so that theoi l (SAE 20) can be poured in easi ly.

WHICH PROPELLER TO GHOOSE?

TOMOS 4 is designed to operate effi-ciently at or close to a certain rpm.Each new TOMOS 4 is equipped witha standard propeller (white colour)designed to give good performance onthe average type of craft with whichthe motor wi l l be used. As a rule i t isseldom necessary to change the pro-pel ler on motors up to 10 h. P., sincethe boats on which such motors areused are suff iciently similar in designand weight to permit the propeller tooperate eff iciently.

To protect all moving parts of the mo-tor against rust, i f the motor is tobe stored for a long period, clean al louter parts and surf aces especial ly i fthe motor had been used in salt water.Use a soft yag, or sponge and water.Remains of salt water within the mo-tor should be removed by means ofrunning water. Inner walls of motorleg should be washed out. For thispurpose put the motor, with i ts lowerunit into a fresh water tank and runmotor for 5-1 0 minutes under f ul lthrott le. You can also f lush out themotor leg by means of water circu-lation. Water is directed into the motorleg by means of a hose connected toa tap and itXed to the water inlet si-tuated under the anticavitation wing,Fig.2/20. l t is most important thatduring the f lushing out by means of ahose the motor stands in a vert icalposit ion, so that the water can f indits way out through the exhaust outlet.After f lushing the interior let the engi-ne run out of water for 3-4 rninutesat quarter th rottle to dry.

bles with start ing the motor may also

be caused by small quanti t ies of waterin the carburettor f loat chamber (clean

the carburettor), or else by moist or

salt deposits accumulated on the igni-

t ion cable and igni t ion cable plug (wipe

dry with a rag).

lf your motor has a poor performance

check the fol lowing points:

1. Choke closed or hal f c losed.

2. Carburettor loose on inlet pipe.

3. Intake silencer damaged or obstruc-ted.

4. Rubber washer in fuel connectordamaged or worn.
