FADE IN:

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - NIGHT

A car is driving down a isolated, winding country

road. There are three young teenage girls inside the car,

dancing in their seats to music.

EXT. OUTSIDE COUNTRY HOUSE - NIGHT

MOTHER - 40 years old, dressed in black jeans and plain

top with a cream cardigan - is leaning on the front door

of the country house, she is smoking breathing deeply in

and out. She looks out towards the darkness of the night,

emotionless. Mother then chucks the last of her cigarette

away and pulls out a pack of cigarettes from her pocket.

She opens the packet, realising there is none left, with

little effort she crunches and throws the packet onto the

floor. Mother then turns to walk back into the house but

stops and turns her head looking back into the darkness,

she hears music coming closer until she sees the light

from a car. She then fumbles at the handle on the door and

rushes into the house.

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD/ OUTSIDE COUNTRY HOUSE - NIGHT

The car continues to drive down the road, stopping at the

house entrance. LANE - 17 years old, dressed in black

jeans with a checkered shirt - gets out the car, she is

laughing. As she begins to walk away from the car she

trips over, the other girls in the car laugh. The girl

waves the car away. Lane pauses for a moment, closes her

eyes and breathes deeply in and out. Lane begins to walk

down the drive towards the house. She reaches the door and

fumbles for her keys inside her bag. Lane unlocks the door

and hesitates, she then enters the house.

INT. HALLWAY AND STAIRS - NIGHT

Lane closes the door carefully and starts to ascend the

stairs. She stops on the fourth step, and freezes when she

hears a noise. She hears the noise again and starts to

descend the stairs. Lane starts to walk down the hall way

towards the sound, she creeps towards a door way and

slowly grasps the door frame and edges her way round.

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

Lane then relaxes her posture.

Mother is sat at the kitchen table, she looks up and gives

Lane a weak smile.

Lane comfortably enters but stands behind a chair tucked

into the table, directly opposite to Mother. Nothing is

spoken and Lane starts to look around the room and focuses

her attention on a whiskey bottle.

Mother looks down at her hands, she is fidgeting and

twiddling her thumbs. She looks up at Lane.

MOTHER

I put your dinner in the fridge.

Lane looks at the clock - It is 10pm.

MOTHER

Steve had to go out for a while.

LANE

When is he going to be back?

Mother looks at the clock, she panics a little and stands

up.

MOTHER

Soon.

Mother busy’s herself in the kitchen and starts putting

dishes in the dishwasher. Mother has her back to Lane.

MOTHER

I did talk to him... I did my

best.

Lane sits down and puts her bag over the chair, she

fiddles in her bag and pulls out a bag of tobacco, filters

and papers. She starts to roll a cigarette.

Mother hears the noise of Lane rustling and turns around,

Mother looks at her astonished.

Lane meets her look.

LANE

What?

Mother pauses and looks at the clock again and then turns

back to doing the dishes.

LANE

Is everything alright?

MOTHER

I talked to him...the answer is

still the same.

Lane isn’t shocked and does not reply.

Mother turns around and looks at the clock, it is 10:50pm.

MOTHER

You’ve got to pack your things...

PAUSE... i’m talking to you.

Lane just stares at Mother blankly.

MOTHER

LANE

No, you may have given up your

rights, but i’m not giving up

mine!

MOTHER

We’ve got to pa...

The sound of the door opening and

closing.

Both Mother and Lane freeze. After a second Lane starts to

head towards the door way.

Mother grabs her arm.

MOTHER

Hide! Now quickly!

Mother hustles Lane to hide. Then rushes to switch the TV

on. Mother then resumes sorting the dishes out. She

flinches at the sounds Man produces from coming in and

walking down the hall way.

Man appears in the door way and silently enters the

kitchen. He does not say anything and slumps on the sofa.

Mother finishes the dishes and sits down at a chair at the

table facing the TV.

Man begins to give Mother menacing looks.

Mother after a while realises.

MOTHER

What?

MAN

How did your talk go?

MOTHER

I did everything you asked.

MAN

Everything?

MOTHER

Yes.

Man looks back to the TV.

MAN

Well she must be cold.

Mother looks at Man strangely.

MAN

It’s cold out tonight.

Man gets up and walks over to Mother.

Mother cringes and looks down to the floor.

Man walks past and picks up the whiskey bottle on the

table, he sees the roll up on the table and picks it up

and then begins to walk back to the sofa.

MAN

You’d have to be crazy to go out

without your coat.

Man sits down back on the sofa.

Mother begins to fidget uncontrollably.

Man stands up in front of Mother.

MAN

Why are her boots here.

Man looks towards the hallway where Lane shoes are.

Mother scared cowers back and looks away.

MAN

You’re lying to me... Where is

she?

MOTHER

She’s not here I promise!

Man pulls himself out of his chair and stands over Mother.

He puts a hand on Mothers shoulder, Mother winces but does

not look up at Man.

MOTHER

She’s... She’s gone.

Man begins to squeeze Mothers shoulder, Mother

whimpers. Lane erupts and comes out of hiding. Man lets go

of Mother.

LANE

Don’t lay one more finger on her!

MAN

You shut up!

Man pulls mother out of her chair.

You lied to me... Why do you

always lie to me.

Whilst Man is talking to Mother Lane grabs something off

the side and moves quickly and hits Man on the head. Man

collapses onto the floor. Mother screams and begins to

whimper. Lane looks down at man and then steps over him to

walk towards the table and picks up a cigarette light it

and smokes.

LANE

I rolled that for me.
