KIDS' TRIATHLON on April 1, the Joplin family YmCA held its first Kids' triathlon. this event consisted of a five-minute swim, followed by a 15-minute bike ride, and ended with a 10-minute run. seventeen kids rose to the challenge. each received a finisher's medal, certificate and t-shirt. In march, the Y held a kids' triathlon clinic to help prepare the kids for the April triathlon. this was a very successful event and a great way to expose kids to the challenge and variety of skills involved in competing in a triathlon. At one point or another, we all have heard how unique the tornado recovery in the Joplin area has been. the positive light that makes this community one of a kind reflects on the people who live here. they are people who personify the love, resilience and strength for which this area is known, and they exude that special feeling many of us have for this area we call home. emerging from this characteristic of compassion was a concept which, until now, has never been instituted in the u.s.—a recovery-oriented human services Campus (hsC). the hsC was established by community leaders and collaborative agencies to assist all survivors affected by the may 22, 2011, storm. local agencies joined together and developed the idea to offer an array of their services under one roof to promote a whole-community-recovery concept for their neighbors. one identified community-recovery issue was overwhelming—the lack of transportation. we were able to successfully merge more than 40 collaborating groups to address problems such as this. that success, in addition to each agency's unique expertise, has allowed us to assist survivors with a multitude of short- and long-term recovery needs. each community defines a successful recovery outcome differently, based on challenges, priorities and long-term visions. one method this community has used to achieve a successful recovery outcome is to bring together surrounding local governments, local schools and colleges, foundations, faith-based groups, nonprofit organizations and various entities from the private sector to ensure a rapid, whole-community recovery. we as a community realized the importance of focusing on the complete well-being and recovery of our families/neighbors, rather than just looking at numbers and data. one focus of the hsC is to ensure that survivors are offered the skills training and assistance they need to return their lives to a stronger, safer and healthier state. ZUMBA MASTER CLASS on march 16, the Joplin family YmCA held a Zumba master Class to support habitat for humanity's efforts to rebuild Joplin homes destroyed by last year's tornado. Zumba International Presenter and Zumba education specialist tony witt and the Y's very own nikki Phillips led this hour and a half of Zumba-tastic fun. more than 100 Zumba enthusiasts helped the Y raise more than $2,000! STAY HEALTHY THISSUMMER

GINNY JONESaCSm-CpT (american College of Sports medicine), ymCa Group Exercise instructorsummertime means a lot of barbecues. here are a few tips to make yourbarbecues healthier. opt for grilled chicken breast when possible. forhamburgers, choose the leanest ground beef (or turkey) you can find, such as93/7 (only 7% fat) as opposed to 80/20 (20% fat). Consume hot dogs sparingly,

but go with lower fat or lower sodium varieties when you have them—or try a turkey dog!save some calories by using lower-calorie buns, such as the 80-calorie wheat buns bywonder bread. finally, make a fruit salad or veggie tray as a healthy side in place of chips, potato salad or baked beans.

JANE SCHIEFELBEINaCSm-CpT (american College of Sports medicine), aFaa Group instructorJust get out and play! swimming, biking, taking a walk or even a trip to thepark—it's all exercise and good for your body. enjoy the weather and fresh airwhenever you can.

KIPP KOILEymCa Certified personal Trainerdrink lots of water! during the hot, sunny summer, it's even more crucial to keepyourself properly hydrated. It helps your body tolerate the heat and avoid heat-related illnesses. Aim for at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water everyday...and more when you spend a lot of time out in the heat.

NIKKI PHILLIPSymCa of the USa Certified Trainer for: ymCa Group Exercise instructor, ymCa Cardioand Step instructor, ymCa pilates instructor; ymCa Certified personal Trainer; ymCaCertified Core muscle instructor; Licensed Zumba Fitness instructor. aFaa GroupExercise instructorGod wants us to connect with each other...so find a workout buddy! If you find

someone who can work out with you and hold you accountable, you'll have better success inachieving your goals. having a friend to uphold you and build you up can make or break yoursuccess in reaching your weight-loss goals. And when you reach those goals, you'll havesomeone to share the joy with—someone who understands and can share in the reward, too.so invite someone to work out with you, make that person feel loved, and he or she will keepcoming with you!

Tips from our personalTrainers

TRAVIS RENFROymCa Certified personal Trainer, ymCa Group Exercise instructorduring summer, when the weather is nice and the sun is shining, we want to getup later and stay awake longer, enjoying every minute of the nice, sunny days.right? but it’s important that we still keep a normal sleep schedule. rest iscrucial to a healthy mind, good metabolism and overall well-being. If it’s not in

your routine to stay up late and take naps in the middle of the day normally, don’t change forthe summer days now.

JENNIFER JAMESONymCa personal Trainer, ymCa personal Trainer instructor, aFaa Group Exerciseinstructortry to maintain a healthy, well-balanced eating routine. with longer summer daysand with kids out of school, we tend to get busier and don't make the time to dowhat it takes to stay on a good nutrition schedule. try not to overeat or eat too

late into the evening during the longer summer days. As we become less active into theevening, we expend fewer calories. remember portion control when you head out forbarbecues and summer events. Any excess calories that your body doesn't use for energy willbe stored as body fat, making weight gain inevitable.

it feels so wonderful to be partof an organization that is socommitted to communityrevitalization, building healthyfamilies and social responsibility.
