Walking away from this year’s High Holy Days, I was truly inspired by the array of our communal experiences reaching high spiritual levels. The most breathtaking moment was the opportunity to have a Brit Milah (Bris) performed at the end of services on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. Halachically, we are obligated to perform a Bris as part of our services even if the “eighth day” falls on Rosh Hashanah. This was the first time for most of us, including me, to experience a Bris as part of Rosh Hashanah. While they are never routine, at times we do not give a Bris or a Baby Naming for a girl anything more than a basic understanding in our prayers. Our tradition shares a blessing for all newborn children. Together, we state at each Bris or Baby Naming, “We wish him/her a life full of Torah, Huppah, and Maasim Tovim (Good Deeds).” On the surface it seems obvious: we want our children to learn Torah, we want them to some day get married, and we want them to be “good.” However, I believe that this phrase of Torah, Huppah, and Maasim Tovim has a profound connotation. Torah: It is not just that we want our children to sit and study our Jewish texts, but, more importantly, we should study AND live by the Torah, meaning we take the values and ethics that we learn from the weekly parshiot (sections of the Torah read each week) and put them into practice. Huppah: Why would the rabbis want each child to eventually get married? One obvious answer is because marriage leads to more children, which guarantees the continuation of Judaism. Today, when we think of huppah, it does not have to literally mean marriage but, instead, the ensured

evolution of our religion. Moreover, this blessing of chuppah is also about companionship. In our world today, our hope and blessing is that we each find someone to share our lives with, whether this is in the realm of marriage or simply a good friendship. Companionship is more than just marriage today; we must be there for each other as a community. Maasim Tovim: With regard to doing good deeds, this may still seem apparent, but I would like to suggest that we need to be thinking about our actions every day and how we treat one another. Again, it is important to do Tikkun Olam and help to repair the world, and we have many opportunities to do so within our synagogue and even when going the extra mile in our everyday lives. It is also how we act in our hearts and toward each other on a daily basis. Are we kind to our children, our parents, our spouse? Are we treating those who work for us with the proper kavod (respect)?

As we move into this new year together, I hope we can all think about the potential that remains in each of us, no matter how far we are past our own births. It is not too late to take our “birth blessing” of Torah, Huppah, and Maasim Tovim. We should remind ourselves, our children, our grandchildren, and even our parents of the hope implored in us, and how we can fulfill it.

Kol Shira: The Voice of Song

………………………………

By Hazzan Jeremy Lipton

This month I will begin teaching a brand new adult education class, “Heart and Soul: A Practical Guide to Lev Shalem, our new Shabbat siddur.” The class, which meets on Sunday mornings from 11:00 a.m .- 12:00 noon, is offered in recognition of several of our members’ desire to become more familiar and comfortable with our outstanding, recently published Conservative movement prayer book, Siddur Lev Shalem. I am extremely proud that we at Congregation Agudas Achim are among the first congregations in the country to have acquired and wholeheartedly embraced this new publication, which is modeled after the movement’s well received Machzor Lev Shalem, the High Holiday prayer book that we have come to know and love these past five years during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Those of you who are “regulars” at either our Shabbat morning or Friday evening services have already experienced some of the remarkable differences between this new siddur and our previous one, Siddur Hadash. The first thing that may strike you is the visual layout: the four columns across two open pages allow for much more than simply Hebrew text on the left and translation on the right side of the pages. Rather, Lev Shalem offers clear instructions, fresh and inspirational translations, English transliterations of many of the Hebrew texts, classic and contemporary commentary, as well as variant readings that include creative prayers, poetry and philosophical reflections.

The Hebrew in this siddur is both traditional and inclusive of our varying prayer

customs within the Conservative movement. In addition, the presence of certain optional prayers and piyutiim (liturgical poetry) from Sephardic practice have added yet another cultural dimension to our prayer services. The cumulative effect of all of these features in the new siddur is perhaps transformational in our approach to prayer, which before may have become rote like, but which is now a unique experience every time we open the book. It fulfills that which we fervently express in our Torah Service’s closing words—“Etz chayim hi” (“It is a Tree of Life”), “…Chadesh yameinu k’kedem,”—“…Make our days fresh, as they once were!”

Arnold Eisen, the Chancellor of The Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York City, shared his praise of our new siddur when he said, “I am proud to introduce you to the many pleasures of this remarkable prayer book, which—like Conservative Judaism as a whole—takes tradition forward in a way at once faithful, learned, loving and bold. Siddur Lev Shalem invites us to ‘dream the dream of God,’ as Abraham Joshua Heschel put it, in words that join our hearts and minds to those of our ancestors.”

“Lev shalem” means “with a full heart.” I hope you will whole-heartedly join with me in a deep and practical exploration of this, our newest resource, as we study together on Sunday mornings over the course of the next six months. Perhaps we will find new ways to “dream the dream of God” together?! B’shalom, Hazzan Jeremy Lipton

Since we will be spending the next 24 hours confessing and repenting for our sins, I have a confession to make. I love this machzor! Why? Because I'm reading not only the translation of our prayers but the wonderful quotes on the left hand side of the pages. Now, you know the truth. I'm not following the service. Please don't tell Rabbi and Hazzan. I've noticed a recurring theme in our prayers, in the commentary and in these quotes. I'd like to share what I have found with you. There is a paragraph in the Silent Amidah that I was encouraged to read during my presidency – and I find that I read it every time I'm here. It doesn't matter what prayer book I'm using, there is always some derivation of the paragraph: My God, keep my tongue from evil, my lips from lies. Help me ignore those who would slander me. Let me be humble before all. Open my heart to your Torah, that I may pursue your mitzvot. (Remember humble and pursuing mitzvot.) In one of the machzor quotes, Max Routtenberg said that if he had “to reduce the essential meaning of the vast religious panorama of the High Holy Days to one word” it would be “responsibility.” This is the one central, basic teaching of Judaism. We are responsible for ourselves and we are responsible for our neighbors – whether next door or a continent away. Routtenberg concludes that you are responsible for the well-being of your fel-low Jews. He says, on Yom Kippur, we are judged on how we have cared for ourselves and cared for our fellow Jews. I really think that Elisabeth Kubler-Ross said it best – “It is the denial of death that is partially responsible for people living empty purposeless lives; for when you live as if you'll live forever, it becomes too easy to post-pone the things you know you must do. In contrast, when you fully understand that each day you awaken could be the last you have, you take the time that day to grow, to become more of who you really are, to reach out to other human beings.” As we stand before God and seek atonement this Yom Kippur, we find ourselves looking at the past year. Have we been responsible for ourselves and others? Have we been humble? Did we follow the mitzvot? We consider the choices we have made. Some were good, others were better. We look forward to this new year with hope and inspiration to be better people, better Jews. You don't realize it, but you've been reminded daily over the past year, often several times in a day, how sim-ple our choices can be. You have been receiving advice from the great sage, Tim McGraw. If I remember cor-rectly, he said: Go to synagogue 'cause your mamma says to Visit grandpa every chance that you can It won't be wasted time Always stay humble and kind Hold the door, say “please”, say “thank you” Don't steal, don't cheat and don't lie (doesn't this sound familiar?) I know you got mountains to climb, But always stay humble and kind When the dreams you're dreamin' come to you When the work you put in is realized Let yourself feel the pride But always stay humble and kind

How fitting that we heeded Tim's words and formed the Caring and Kindness Network. Co-chaired by Esther Lasky-Mata, Tevia Friedman and Octavio Viramontes, and enhanced by dedicated mensches Jean Schlesinger, Daphna Holzman Haas, Lauren Abraham, Lisa Edelman, Denise Horowitz, Sherri Traktenbroit, Jody Reddy, Barb Bikoff, Pearl Gossen, Shelly Berens and Sharon Stern, the Network supports congregants who are undergoing significant life events by making bereavement calls, visiting members in need of companionship – at home and at the hospital, joining in shiva minyans, preparing and delivering meals to new mothers and their families, reaching out to families who are celebrating a bris, baby naming or wedding, delivering Shabbat bags to military families, and baking challah. The IPRS Sunday school art class has joined in this mitzvah by creating Get Well cards. The dreams of many have been realized by the creation of this Network. Its members enjoy the satisfaction of supporting our congregational family. You won't hear them boast about their work but they would love to have you join them and will welcome you with open arms. It's a great way to meet the members of your congregational family and a simple way to be a better Jew. Rebbe Nachman of Breslov opined, “If you are not a better person tomorrow than you are today, what need have you for a tomorrow? Tomorrow is very important to us as individuals and collectively as a congregation. Tomorrow is our next generation. It is sustaining Judaism. It is the continuation of Agudas Achim through its next 100 years. You may not realize it, but each of you had a hand in sustaining Judaism and Agudas Achim. Each Agudas Achim family contributed $18 to the Torah Restoration Fund. As a result of this new fund, we were able to bring in a sofer and restore two of our Torahs. In order to keep our congregation and Judaism alive, we must maintain not only the building where we pray but the foundational elements of our religion. It's just like being a homeowner, except on a bigger scale. On behalf of the administration of Agudas Achim, those who use the torahs regularly and the next generations to receive that opportunity – I thank you for helping us realize that dream. I do believe that Tim McGraw was channeling Rebbe Nachman with the following advice: When you get where you're going don't forget to turn back around and help the next one in line Always stay humble and kind I'm helping the next one in line by looking forward. United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism approved our application and we are one of a dozen conservative synagogues from across the nation who are receiving guidance from United Synagogue as we strategically plan for Agudas Achim. Linda Moad and I are co-chairing our strategic planning committee. Our committee includes Rabbi Abraham, Hazzan Lipton, Rachel Stern, Rhonda Gurinsky, Mindy Spigel, Mike Peck, Renee Glazier and Jon Gordon. Our goal is to present a plan for our congregation as it moves forward over the next 3 – 5 years. This plan is not a summary of our opinions. It will be the culmination of a year and a half of collecting data from you and our community. You had an initial taste when we launched our survey over the summer. Later this month, the committee and the board will be working with our United Synagogue Transformation Specialist, Nadine Kochavi, to review and revise our Vision. As we focus on our successes and opportunities, think of what you envision for Agudas and be prepared to share your thoughts. On a recent shopping trip, I ran into a fellow congregant. She said I appreciate everything you do because I know I couldn't do your job. I can honestly say that there are days I wouldn't wish my role on my worst enemy. That being said – you do not have to be president to make a difference in this synagogue. There are so many opportunities – small jobs, big jobs and every size in between. Any one can be involved. If you don't feel the urge to be hands on, no one will ever turn away enhanced dues and gifts to the shul. Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me; and if I am (only) for myself, what am I. And if not now, when?” We were each created for a specific purpose, to care for each other and make a difference in the world – which need not be the vast reaches of our universe but within the confines of your congregational world. And as Rabbi Hillel said – if not now, when? There is no time like the present. Wishing each of you the opportunity to make better choices this year. Gmar Chatimah tovah.
