We are Jesus’ sheep, and he is our Good Shepherd. He leads us to true happiness that will last.

True happiness comes from following Jesus and doing his will. Jesus teaches us the Beatitudes. These are the attitudes of Jesus’ followers that will give us real happiness.

Go to page 44 of your Catechism handbook to learn more about

the Beatitudes.

Tess got a call from her cousin Josie.

“Will you take care of my hamster for me?” asked Josie.

“We are going to visit Grandma and Grandpa for the weekend.”

“I would love to,” said Tess. “He can sleep in my room.”

On Thursday, Josie brought Teddy in his hamster cage.

“Teddy is so cute,” Tess said, petting him though the cage wires. “He’s like a little ball of fur.” Josie unpacked Teddy’s food and toys.

On Friday, Tess fed, watered, and petted Teddy.

On Saturday morning, Teddy was not in his cage! “Did you take Teddy out of his cage?” Tess asked her little brother. “The door is open.”

“Josie told me I couldn’t even touch Teddy because I have a cough,” Luke said. “She said that I might make him sick.”

Tess and Luke looked everywhere for Teddy. They looked in the closets, the basement, the family room, and the kitchen cupboards. No Teddy.

Tess made a plan. She left the door to Teddy’s cage open. She put a dish of food just inside the door. She put water next to the food.

On Sunday, Teddy was still gone. “What should I do now?” Tess wondered. “Josie will be here soon to get Teddy.”

How did Teddy get out of his cage? What should Tess do?

Narrator: Jesus was talking with some Pharisees:

Jesus 1: Only robbers climb over the fence into a sheep pen.

Jesus 2: The one who comes in through the gate is the shepherd. The gatekeeper opens the gate for the shepherd. The sheep hear the shepherd’s voice. He calls them by name and leads them out.

Jesus 3: He walks in front of them. The sheep know his voice and follow him.

Jesus 1: The sheep will not follow a stranger. They do not know the stranger’s voice. They will run away from a stranger.

Narrator: The Pharisees did not understand what Jesus was trying to tell them. He tried again.

Jesus 2: I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me were robbers. The sheep did not listen to them.

Jesus 3: I am the gate. All the sheep who come in through me will be saved.

Jesus 1: The robber comes to rob, kill, and destroy. I came so that my sheep might have full life.
