“We made the decision toinvest in our son’s future with Kingswood House because we felt it was the best environment to support him through his teenage years. The balance of smaller classes, pastoral care and traditional values, including sport and academic attainment, made it the obvious choice to maximise his potential through Years 9 to 11.”

Our ApproachOur mission is to equip every boy, regardless oflearning style, with the skills he needs to fulfil his potential, academically and otherwise.

We feel passionately that every boy is entitled to a rigorous and inspiring learning environment, with teaching tailored to how he learns best. We challenge our pupils to achieve the best they can in every aspect of school life.

Educating the whole child has always been ourphilosophy and nowhere is this more evident than in our extensive Senior Years extra-curricular programme which will help to develop practical and personal skills. Talents and interests will be encouraged and there will be opportunities to obtain qualifications that are widely recognised by educational institutions and employers. Pupils will also be able to participate in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

At Kingswood House we have alwaysaimed to provide an excellent education bothwithin and outside the classroom; we see our Senior Years as a perfect opportunity

hugely if he stayed on for his GCSE years. He joined

in Year 3 and has blossomed in the nurturing, caring

emotionally.”

Access New Opportunities

Senior Years at Kingswood HouseYear 9 is an important foundation year which will help prepare our boys for GCSE and beyond. Committed staff and small class sizes allow for personalised and individual learning which continues into Years 10 and 11.

Senior boys have their own common room and dedicated classrooms. The extra-curricular activities on offer are wide ranging and give boys the opportunity to try sports and learn new skills that they may not have the chance to experience elsewhere.

Boys are given the opportunity to grow in confidence and independence, both in the classroom and through a wide range of enriching experiences.

Senior boys have many unique privileges:• A new online rewards system ‘ePraise’

where points are earned for good behaviour, good effort, good attendance, achievement, and extra-curricular activities. Points can then be traded in for prizes such as pens, cinema tickets, sports equipment and other experiences.

• An end of term social event for all Senior Years.

• A formal Headmaster’s Lunch for senior pupils only.

• Senior Lecture series with guest speakers from various industries and walks of life.

Personalised Learning

The CurriculumOur academic curriculum offers both breadth and balance, and it allows for the effective integration of knowledge, skills and understanding. Year 9 is the year in which GCSE options are chosen and boys therefore need to experience and explore a wide range of subjects. Year 9 also provides an excellent opportunity for pupils to further their independent learning skills through cross-curricular and project work.

Additionally, Year 9 pupils enjoy the challenge of planning, creating and managing a cross-curricular week for the benefit of the whole school. Pupils will have the opportunity to undertake an accredited Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This award takes the form of a largely self-directed and self-motivated project: pupils will choose, plan and research their own topic area before developing their ideas and deciding on a finished product. Extremely valuable and rewarding in its own right, this award also provides an excellent foundation for higher-level EPQ qualifications in the GCSE years and beyond.

Broadening Horizons

Individual Needs and EnrichmentWe are a leading provider of dedicated support for the individual child. We have had a Study Centre for many years with specialist tutors and Speech and Language Therapists to help meet specific learning needs and give appropriate support. Our Study Centre specialists work closely with classroom staff and parents to provide one-to-one or small group tuition. We also provide Occupational Therapy to support handwriting and co-ordination difficulties. We encourage children of all abilities to broaden their horizons. Each term a programme of extension and enrichment activities offers a diversity of experiences. Pupils are encouraged to air their views on the development of their own education, to build on their strengths and to develop areas in which they have an interest.

Further QualificationsThese qualifications will be tailored to the strengths and interests of each pupil. Within our extra-curricular and citizenship programmes, boys will be able to achieve many types of vocational qualifications which will equip them with essential life skills and a platform for further study after Kingswood House. From practical First Aid training to preparing pupils for their future careers, the school will create opportunities for every pupil to pursue his own interests and talents.

Responsible Citizens

Citizenship ProgrammeKingswood House has developed a reputation for producing boys with an excellent sense of duty and care for others. In Year 9 and beyond, they will have the opportunity to work alongside various local, national and international voluntary organisations that care for people and the environment. This will afford the boys many life changing experiences that will help them to become grounded and responsible citizens of the future. Whether the boys are helping the elderly, building new wildlife habitats or assisting charities at home or abroad, they will often work in small teams developing invaluable communication and logistical skills.

Our Citizenship Programme is an extension of our comprehensive pastoral curriculum which also includes personal finance, working with small businesses and participating in Young Enterprise to encourage entrepreneurship.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award SchemeThe Scheme was devised to develop self-reliance, independence, physical activity and service to others, and it encapsulates many key values that mirror the school’s ethos. Boys will also be able to achieve the Silver Award in Years 10 and 11.

“I am really excited to be one of the first boys to

enter Year 9 at Kingswood House. Duke of Edinburgh will be amazing; I can’t wait

for it all to begin!”

A Sense of Adventure

TripsAt Kingswood House, our comprehensive programme of trips offers exciting experiences that enrich pupils’ learning and develop a sense of adventure.

Our small class sizes enable us to offer a greater variety of trips to many exciting locations within the United Kingdom and abroad including a ‘Tour of Britain’, a groundbreaking cross-curricular tour of many of the places that have helped to shape modern Britain.

GCSE subjects will be supported with other visits, which will bring subjects to life and enable boys to investigate topics in a hands-on, practical way.

Residential trips are common at Kingswood House and these will continue to be an important aspect of the Senior Years. All boys will have the opportunity to go abroad to visit the war graves, undertake geography fieldwork or go on the annual ski trip. In addition, there is a biennial water sports trip to France and the rugby tour to Jersey.

15

“During a six day, 600 mile round journey, the boys visited

13 counties, 10 museums, 5 major towns/cities and numerous

landmarks. All aspects of modern British life were discussed and the boys were able to make many links between current issues and those

of the past. Apart from visiting urban areas, the boys hiked the route of the famous 1932 Mass Trespass around Kinder Scout

in the Peak District.”
