Annual Offertory Renewal Awareness Message St. Mark Mission Statement: To invite all on our journey to L.O.V.E. - Learn, Orar (pray), GiVe, Evangelize“As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples,
if you love one another.” John 13: 34-35
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we near Thanksgiving it is time once again for our Annual Offertory Renewal which enables us to come together as a parish to prayerfully reflect on how we are living out our call to discipleship in our weekly offertory giving and to adjust accordingly for the coming year. It is also the time for presenting to the parish the Annual Financial Report which shows how our offerings are being used to live out the Mission of St. Mark and build God’s Kingdom.
The Offertory, or Collection, at Mass is an integral part of the Sunday liturgy, not just because it is the primary means by which the parish re-ceives financial support from the parishioners for its ministries, programs and maintenance, but because it is also an expression of our gratitude to God for the blessings He has given us to return a portion of them back to Him for use by His Church to further His work in the world.
By our baptism as Catholics we are called to be stewards of God’s gifts to us, to use them in ways that build up our families, our parish, our community, and our world. In that stewardship, we are encouraged to be deliberate and intentional in weighing our various obligations against our limited resources as we decide where we spend those resources of time and money and effort. When we give to our parish offertory and to the greater Church, we are witnessing to our children and to the world about our values and about what is important to us as well as express-ing our love for God and one another.
As you think about what St. Mark, its ministries and its future mean to you, the chart below is provided to help you in your discernment. If you have not been contributing to the offertory, please consider doing so this year. If you have been contributing, please consider moving up a level. The Annual Financial Report is being published in this bulletin. Father David will give his report in his homily at all Masses this weekend.
In gratitude for your generosity, we wish you Peace and Many Blessings,
Sandra SilecchiaStewardship Renewal Committee
PRAYER FOR RENEWAL
Dear Lord, You have given us life through Baptism.
You invite us to share the gift of our lives and resources in service to others.
Be with us as we choose each day to show Your Presence in our world.
Give us the courage and generosity to respond to Your call.
We pray especially for those throughout our parish who give of themselves
in ministry and their resources to serve You.
Dear Lord, keep us close to You.
Open our minds and hearts that we may always endeavor to imitate Jesus
and though our love and charity and continue to build Your Kingdom.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Growing in Faith TogetherThis week we conclude our consideration of the role of the laity within the structure of the Church. The laity shares in the three-fold office of Christ as priest, prophet, and king. Last week we considered our participation in the priestly and prophetic office of Christ. This week we turn to our participation in the kingly role of Christ.
We share in the kingly office of Christ by working for his kingdom here on earth by "Gseeking to build the common good of society on the basis of moral principles" (United States Catholic Catechism for Adults: 134). We are called to overcome sin in our own lives and in the world.
The kingly mission of Christ is "to lead others through loving service to them" (United States Catholic Catechism for Adults: 118). As a kingly people, we are called to be leaders but this is a leadership of service not domination. We follow the example of Jesus who came to serve rather than be served. As he tells us: "Gwhoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Matthew 20: 26-28). Giving ourselves in love and service can help transform our society. There are many charitable organizations where we can volunteer our time and treasure to serve others. As Jesus has taught us: "I say to you, what-ever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40).
This idea of being a servant leader is found in all those laity who generously give their gifts and talents as volunteers in the many ministries in the Church in which we can be involved. Many of the laity serve as well as paid staff in the Church when they could often have a greater income by pursuing employment outside the Church. We must always remember that involvement in ministry within the Church should be "Greflected in a greater penetration of Christian values in the social, political, and economic sectors" with "Ga real commitment to applying the Gospel to the transformation of society" (Francis, Evangelii Guadium: #102).
Pope Francis tells us: "Lay people are, put simply, the vast majority of the people of God. The minority - ordained ministers - are at their service" (Francis, Evangelii Guadium: #102). Next week we will begin an examination of the hierarchy and their role of service to the people of God.

Interesting Facts about the Catholic Church and the Bible
The Catholic Church is entirely responsible for the com-
position of the Bible, which books are included, as well
as the breakup of the chapters and verses. The original
manuscripts did not contain the chapter and verse divi-
sions in the numbered form familiar to modern readers.
These were done, at different moments, by Catholic
clergymen.
In antiquity Hebrew texts were divided into paragraphs
that were identified by two letters of the Hebrew alpha-
bet. “Pe” indicated an "open" paragraph that began on a
new line, while “Samekh” indicated a "closed" paragraph
that began on the same line after a small space. The
earliest known copies of the Book of Isaiah from
the Dead Sea Scrolls use these two Hebrew letters for
their paragraph divisions. Those copies were discovered
about 70 years ago, almost 1900 years The earliest
known copies of the Book of Isaiah from the Dead Sea
Scrolls use these two Hebrew letters for their paragraph
divisions being written.
A first attempt to create chapter divisions, with titles, are found in the 9th century Tours
manuscript, the so-called Bible of Rorigo. However, Archbishop Stephen Langton and
Cardinal Hugo de Sancto Caro developed different schemas for systematic division of
the Bible in the early 13th century. It is the system of Archbishop Langton on which the
modern chapter divisions are based.
The first person to divide New Testament chapters into verses was Italian Dominican
biblical scholar Anti Pagnini (1470–1541), but his system was never widely adopted.
Robert Estienne created an alternate numbering in his 1551 edition of the Greek New
Testament which was also used in his 1553 publication of the Bible in French. Estienne's
system of division was widely adopted, and it is this system which is found in almost all
modern Bibles.
So, the Catholic Church was responsible to collect, preserve and putting together all the
loose books and letters into a one single book, the Bible. The Catholic Church is also
responsible for creating the form all bibles are organized and printed, by chapters and
verses. On top of that, Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press, was
Catholic and the first book ever printed was the Catholic Bible.
Why are Catholic Bibles and Protestant Bibles different?
Protestants have removed some books of the Bible because some of the verses were
inconsistent with their theology. Martin Luther was a prime offender in this regard,
removing Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach and Baruch. He also made
an effort to remove from the New Testament the books of James and Revelations, but
this was rejected by his followers and those two books were kept. Catholics are often
accused of "adding" the 7 books that Protestant bibles don’t have, but despite this
common belief, it is false. Older, pre-Protestant, Catholic translations of the Bible include
them. These seven books are still in Catholic Bibles, and were in the Bible of the early
Church.
Many KJV-only preachers reject them because of their preservation by Catholic, but
they were also included in the original 1611 King James Bible.
The "Apocrypha" section of seven books were later removed by most Protestant bible
printing companies because the "extra" pages caused costs of printing and shipping to
be higher and missionary societies were looking for a way to send as many Bibles as
cheaply as possibly, so they just discarded these scriptures since their churches did not
preach from them authoritatively. In recent years, we have seen several editions of
Protestant bibles including the seven “deuterocanonical” books as a separate section.
