Our Lives...Our Stories 2008

Students at Greenwood Lakes Middle School may have been preschoolers on September 11, 2001, but that didn’t stop them from taking part in the recent America Supports You Freedom Walk – an event dedicated to commemorating the lives lost on that day and to honor veterans and current troops. The walk has become a national tradition; it was started by Pentagon employees seeking a way to honor the victims of the attack. This year 345 communities, representing all 50 states, and 23 nations participated in the event.

Cable in the Classroom...eLECTIONS

Cable in the Classroom invited our students to embark on a high-speed journey to become the next President of the United States through a free online 3-D game called eLECTIONS: Your Adventure in Politics. Choose your platform, raise funds, handle the media – and learn more with multimedia content from CNN Student News, C-SPAN and HistoryTM.

Inspired by the classic board game “The Game of Life,” learners role-play their own virtual candidates running for president. The one or two-player game is both genuinely entertaining and genuinely educational.

eLECTIONS supports meaningful, memorable learning by providing: • A Teacher’s Guide on how to use eLECTIONS in the classroom and match

curriculum; • Mapped connections to state teaching standards for Social Studies; • A Save the Game Feature – players are now able to save a game in progress

and come back to play at another time; • Video and online content from CNN Student News, C-SPAN, and HistoryTM

bring topics to life; • Feedback on player decisions. A George Washington avatar appears at key

Trip to Colombia

If you had to leave to another country, which country would you choose? Well, I chose Colombia because my second family lives there.

The plane trip to Colombia was boring, mostly because I was sleeping. Our first stop was to Panama. We had to wait two hours. Then our final destination was Bogota, Colombia. When we arrived, only my cousin, my aunt and my mom’s friend were there. We said hello and hugged each of them. Then my other cousins showed up, and we gave hugged and kissed them too. After that we waited for a cab and went to my aunt’s house. They showed us our rooms, and we started unpacking a few things. We ate dinner and then went to sleep. The next four days we visited our families. We went to explore the city. We even went to church.

Then we packed up again and went on a bus to the mountains. That’s where my mom’s side of the family lived. My cousins Viviana and Steven tagged along too. We stayed in the mountains for ten days and during some of those ten days we stayed at my Aunt Marta’s and Uncle Benjamin’s house. They have a daughter who was seventeen, a son who was twelve, a son who was ten, a son who was seven and a son who was four. I mostly played with the boys because the daughter was quite. The mosquitoes there were huge. They were about the size of your palm! They bit me on my legs, arms and my face when I was sleeping. My sister, my mom, Viviana and Steven got bitten too. They didn’t bite my cousins because they were used to them.

We visited my mom’s parents and went to the pool with them and my cousins. It was fun because I got to spend time with the family. Next thing you know we had to leave. It was a teary goodbye. Everyone said good-bye, then started talking and then said good-bye again. My uncle took us to a bus station and we were off. The bus ride to the city wasn’t a pretty picture. My cousin and sister threw up because the road was so rocky. I almost threw up too because of the smell. When we got back to my aunt’s house, we threw a farewell party and we went home. It’s a trip I will never forget.
