Gracious God, You offered the world a powerful
example of Christian love in action through
the words and deeds of BLESSED MOTHER
TERESA of Calcutta.
She taught us how to faithfully serve Jesus by
loving and caring for the least of our brothers and sisters. She devotedly fed the
hungry, gently cared for those who were sick and dying, provided shelter for the homeless, and
embraced needy children who were unwanted and forgotten.
Help me, O GOD, to imitate her love and compassion for others. Give me a charitable heart
that I may generously share your blessings, and care for Jesus today in the poor and less fortunate
as MOTHER TERESA did.
Amen

This week we wish Mrs Jane James safe travels as she heads to Europe for 3 weeks to spend time
with her family. Mrs Ali Sandy will be teaching PE for the last two weeks of the school term.
Finally, it is uplifting to receive positive feedback from visitors to our school, especially when they
are talking about their experience of teaching our beautiful students. I recently received this email
from one of our Emergency Teachers;
“I am just sending this email to let you know how much I enjoy teaching at Our Lady's Surrey Hills. I have been a CRT for many years and have taught at many schools. There is a real caring and nurturing atmosphere at Our Lady's which culminates in the Year 5/6 class I taught yesterday being such a pleasure to teach.” Kind regards, Vicki Atkinson

October – Walk to School
Month
Our school is joining hundreds of schools across Victoria and has signed up to do 'Walk to School Month' it is in October and it begins first week back
in Term 4. It seems like a fabulous idea as essentially the school receives some wonderful sports equipment in return for encouraging our students to walk to school all or some of the way during the month of October, which is a healthy habit to build and a fun thing to do! Sports leaders will give out raffle tickets at the two entrances to the school every day to students arriving who have walked to school and a weekly raffle will be held with a prize. The four Tuesdays of October (9th 16th 23rd 30th) will begin at 9:00am with whole school aerobics or boot camp or exercises (depending on what the pair of year 6 Sports Leaders rostered on that day choose) in the playground. Parents and younger siblings are invited to don their runners and join in the fun. All students who participate will be given a Certificate of participation for walking, riding or scooting to school. Keep an eye out for the fact sheet your child will be bringing home about this activity. We are looking forward to lots fun and exercise as we all join in to walk to school this October.
We congratulate Mia, Bella, Eden,
Zoe, Zara, Tess, Gracie, Aarya, Siena
and Emma on becoming the Premiers
of the district netball competition
recently.
Learning and Teaching: To improve student learning outcomes through personalised, effective and
stimulating teaching that builds student engagement and success in all areas of the curriculum.

Christian Meditation On Monday, we began whole school Christian Meditation which was led by Gracie and Charlie in
Year Six. As a school, we have decided to meditate together on both a Monday and Wednesday
straight after play. Each class will have a turn at leading our meditation for the week.
“Be still and Know that I am God”
Meditation is found in all religious traditions. In
Christianity it is the heart of the contemplative
teaching of Jesus on prayer.
It’s about going from the “head to heart”. In the
Christian Tradition we believe that the ‘Holy Spirit’
dwells in our centre. By spending regular time in our
centre, we are building up a ‘contemplative reserve’, in
which we can call upon in our daily interactions. In
times of stress, sadness, frustration or anger we can
learn to respond from this place of calm within. We believe that meditation can;
• nurture a relationship with God
• nurture positive interpersonal relationships
• calm the mind and relax
• develop mindfulness and concentration
Meditation is a wonderful gift, particularly in this fast paced world that we live in. We need
to allow the time for us to discover our “peaceful worthwhileness”. That we are wonderful,
just as we are!
Learning to pray is learning to live as fully as possible in the present moment.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day We warmly welcome you to join us as we celebrate and give thanks for some very important people. On Wednesday, September 19th Our Lady’s School will host Grandparents and Special Friends Morning. We will commence at 9:15am in the Our Lady’s Church for a special prayer service that will be led by our students. Following the liturgy, students will return to their classrooms and Grandparents and Special Friends will share morning tea in the Multi-Purpose Room over at the school. There will be an opportunity for our special visitors to join the students in their classrooms following the morning tea. This will be a wonderful chance to see the great learning that is happening and to join in some fun activities together. We hope you can join us.

Scripture Assemblies/ Liturgies The purpose of these assemblies is for our students to share in their learning of Religious
Education. It is through reading, speaking and listening and the study of history and geography
that students develop an historical understanding of our Catholic identity. It is through prayer
that students develop a personal relationship with God.
