DECLARACIÓN DE MISIÓN DE OLQP La parroquia de la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz se dedica a dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo, especialmente el Evan-gelio de San Mateo, Capítulo 25:21-46. Nuestra mis-ión es nutrir el espíritu y alentar el potencial de aquellos a quienes servimos a través de la cele-bración litúrgica, labores educativas y ministerios sociales. La parroquia continuará identificándose con su origen como una comunidad afro-americana, pero reflejando una congregación multi-étnica y continuará promoviendo la armonía racial y la justi-cia social. Si bien es cierto que nuestro enfoque principal es la vecindad comunitaria, continuaremos trabajando para proveer por el bienestar de los más necesitados en general. Es así como nos esforzamos para hacer de nuestra comunidad parroquial una familia que comparte y se preocupa por sus miem-bros.
OLQP MISSION STATEMENT
Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedicat-ed to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, espe-cially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to en-courage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identify with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial harmo-ny and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the downtrodden everywhere. In this we strive for our parish commu-nity to be a caring, sharing, and loving family.

All must be aware that there is an inherent risk in gathering in any large
group in the midst of a pandemic, so please use your best judgment.
For everyone’s safety, please observe distancing as you walk from your
car to the front doors of the church where a Porter will be waiting to
direct you to your seat. You must remain in your assigned seat through-
out Mass. After the Final Blessing, please follow the Porter’s instruc-
tions for leaving. Do not gather outdoors or in the parking lot.
As per Bishop Burbidge’s instructions for the celebration of public Mass-
es:
All the faithful of the Diocese of Arlington are dispensed from the obliga-
tion to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.
Face Coverings · You MUST wear a c loth face covering or
disposable face mask. Please bring your own. Parishes may
have a l imited supply designated for those in true need, not
for general distr ibution.
Hand Hygiene · You are expected to disinfect your hands when
entering the church and encouraged to do so again
immediately before receiving Communion. Please bring your
own hand sanitizer, which should contain at least 60% alcohol.

NEWS FROM MEDOR: During this Season of Creation, we celebrate Medor resident, Zanie Louis. A widow and mother of four, Zanie received an arbor-loo in 2019 through the St. Joseph parish sanitation program. This type of family latrine allows users to defecate in a shallow hole. When the hole is filled the arbor-loo is moved to a new location, the hole is topped with dirt and a tree is planted in the fertilized site. When the Louis family’s arbor-loo hole was filled, they moved the ‘loo and planted a banana tree. The tree is grow-ing much more quickly because of the fertilizer and is sup-plementing the family’s food intake. Zanie is helping protect the nearby water source from fecal bacteria by using the arbor-loo and is combating climate change by planting a tree. Congratulations to Zanie Louis! Thank you to Our Lady

adoptive/foster families and children who have been or-

CARPENTERS SHELTER DINNER -
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15 Our menu this month is fried or baked chicken, mac and cheese, salad, biscuits, brownies and lemonade. With the parish office closing for renovations, plans are still being ironed out for early drop-off. Check this space next week for details. If delivering on the day of dinner, bring to Father Ray Hall between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. If bringing food directly to Carpenter’s Shelter, label clearly “OLQP Din-ner“ & Date and call them to let them know you’re dropping off. If you are able to bring mac and cheese on the day of dinner and can bring it warm, that’s a huge help in re-heating at shelter. The date for moving back to the new shelter (with new full kitchen!) is fast approaching; this should be the last month we serve at the temporary Landmark shelter.

The RCIA is a gradual process of formation for those seeking a deeper relationship with God and a better understanding of the Catholic faith. NOTICIAS DE MEDOR: Durante esta Época de la Creación, celebramos a Zanie Louis, residente de Medor. Ella es una viuda, madre de cuatro y recibió un Arbor Loop en el 2019 cortesía del programa de saneamiento de la parroquia St. Joseph. Este tipo de letrina permite que quienes la usan se defequen en un hueco poco profundo. Cuando el hueco se llena, se transporta el Arbor Loo a otro lugar, se llena el hueco con tierra y se siembra un
árbol en el lugar fertilizado. Cuando el Arbor Loo de la familia Louis se llenó, llenaron el hueco con tierra y se sembró un banano. El árbol está creciendo mucho más rápido debido al fertilizante y suplementa lo que la familia come. Zanie está ayudando a proteger la fuente de agua de las bacterias fecales al usar el Arbor Loo y combatiendo el cambio climático al sembrar un árbol. ¡Felicidades a Zanie Louis! Gracias a Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz por apoyar el programa de saneamiento de Medor.

LA COMIDA DEL REFUGIO DEL CARPINTERO – JUEVES, 15 DE OCTUBRE
Nuestro menú este mes es pollo frito o asado, mac & cheese, ensalada, panecillos, brownies y limonada. RITO DE INICIACIÓN CRISTIANA PARA ADULTOS (RICA) ¿Qué diferencia marca Dios en mi vida? El RICA es un proceso gradual de formación para quienes buscan una relación más profunda con Dios y un mejor entendimiento de la fe católica. Ya esté usted empezando su jornada de fe, ya esté bautizada/o en otra tradición cristiana y quiere explorar el catolicismo o busca la preparación sacramental, el RICA es el camino. Debido a las restricciones del COVID-19, nos reuniremos virtualmente usando Zoom. New Temporary Location for the PARISH OFFICE BUILDING:
1915 Edgewood St. S., next to the Rectory As parish renovations continue, the parish office building is next in line. The building is expected to be closed through January. Office hours at our new location remain the same: Mon-Fri, 8:30am-3:30pm. Please continue to use the parish mailing address: 2700 19th St S, Arlington VA 22204 1915 Edgewood St S is a split-level house with short sets of interior stairs between each level. If stairs are not an issue, please park in the church parking lot and use the gated en-trance next to the rectory that leads down to the back patio where you’ll find a double door entrance. The front en-trance off Edgewood St. has less steps and is the most direct route to the new office location. We regret this temporary location is not accessible to all. Please contact the office should you need to make arrangements to meet in accessi-ble space. We are happy to accommodate you. We expect to be at this location through the first of the new year.
Parish Phone system -- We are using VOIP (voice-over-
IP) at the new office rather than rewire the entire house for a traditional phone system. You might experience a few hiccups when calling the parish office as we are getting com-fortable with our new phones. We ask for your patience. You can reach us on the same phone number: 703-979-5580.
“ED TALKS” ON ZOOM with KIM DANIELS
This month’s talk will be on Wednesday, October 7, at 7 pm – that’s this Wednesday! A great speaker, Kim Daniels is the Associate Director of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University. She will be discussing why as Catholics we should vote. Please email Jeannette Gantz Daly ([email protected]) for the Ed Talk zoom link. Deadline to request the link is Wednesday, October 7, by 12noon. Please put “Ed Talk Link” in subject line of your email message. (This presentation is in English.) The final talk will feature our very own, Father Tim Hick-ey. He will be doing a sending prayer and homily for peace about and around our election. This will take place on Mon-day, November 2, 2020 at 7 p.m. Please plan to attend both!

We will begin our next series on Identity, October 11th. Ma-
terial pick-up will begin this Sunday, after 10 am Mass, until
12:45 pm, then after the Mass on October 11th until 1:00
pm. If unable to pick up then, please contact Rebecca Grant
Jenkins directly to arrange pick-up. Please bring your bags to
pick up your materials.

“CHARLAS ED” EN ZOOM con KIM DANIELS
La charla este mes va a ser el miércoles, 7 de octubre -- ¡este miércoles! Kim Daniels, una gran oradora, es la Directora Asociada de Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life en la Universidad de Georgetown. MOTHER OF LIGHT CENTER -- Needs Volunteers
and a Van! The Mother of Light Center (MOLC) is a Catho-
lic organization which helps the poor throughout North-
ern Virginia. Specifically, MOLC delivers food to those in
need. MOLC needs volunteer drivers to deliver food Monday
-Saturday from 11-1pm and 1-3pm. Also, MOLC DESPERATE-
LY needs a van as it regularly transports up to 60 bags of
food at a time for deliveries. If you can help, please let us

JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO… God has entrusted the
vineyard to us to care for and cultivate, and to produce fine wine! And in the sense of the parable, the fine wine is not just for ourselves but for the owner of the vineyard too. Yet how do we care for the vineyard, and with whom do we share the fruit of the earth? Do we recognize who “owns” the earth and all it contains? Do we see ourselves as entrusted with a sacred trust or do we see the earth as something to be exploited for our own good, for our use without care of future generations without care of how the Creator/Owner feels for the land we abuse? Many questions! But at the core of them all I believe seems to be one of identity and relationship. Understanding our identity as the beloved of God, God’s daughters and sons, ALL of US and understanding from that identity flows our relationship! And it is this reality that then is to inform all of the actions in our lives….to live as the beloved of God! But we find ourselves living in a vineyard filled with hatred and division, a place where everyone is out for themselves and what they can get out of life without any concern for how it hurts the other. Many businesses around the world overwork and underpay their employees forcing them to work in subhuman conditions for less money than it is humanly possible to live on. As a Nation we proliferate the arms race and threaten war rather than sit down to talk of peace and mutual cooperation. We reel once again from gun violence, the largest mass shooting in our country, and already begin to
fight against stricter gun laws to prevent such senseless acts of mass gun violence. We claim that we value the dignity of all life and yet we imprison more people than any other developed nation, we own more guns per capita than any other nation and procure more abortions. We put more people to death and continue to deny basic healthcare to the most needy in our society while we round up productive, tax paying, undocumented women and men to send them back to countries where their chances of leading successful lives are far less than here. The vineyard is not ours. It belongs to the Creator and we need to recognize that how we live on the earth and how we treat one another matters deeply to the One who made us and who made the vineyard! On this opening Sunday of Respect Life Month let us pray for an end to all forms of violence and disrespect of human life from conception to natural death. Let us pray an end to sys-temic racism and bigotry, an end to misogyny and xenophobia and all actions that disrespect the dignity and sacredness of human life. Blessings, Fr. Tim

Celebrate the Season of Creation! All Creation is Interconnected Week 5 – 10/04/2020
FROM ST. FRANCIS TO POPE FRANCIS The environmental passion of Pope Francis mirrors the deep reverence for the Earth of St. Francis (Brother Sun, Sister Moon) and calls us to be stewards and pro-tectors of all of Creation. Listed below are “Care for Creation” actions that mem-bers of the parish Integrity of Creation team have incorporated into daily living. By sharing them we hope to encourage you to continue the good you are doing and in-
spire you to do more. Our collective actions can make a difference and raise awareness of the contin-ued need to Care for Creation in our community and beyond.
Tidy suburban yards have eliminated much
habitat for wildlife, so we created a “No Mow
Zone” where wildflowers and native plants
grow naturally. What was a "green desert" of
turf is now an oasis of wildflowers visited by
birds, butterflies, insects and other wildlife.
Since plastic can leach into food, and conse-
quently into our bodies, we have been buying
glass storage containers at thrift stores. To
keep from adding to landfill, we try to pur-
chase used clothing, home goods, books, etc
before buying something new. Saves money
and eliminates excess packaging. – Monica

I avoid using plastic coffee pods that degrade
the environment and disposable plastic in
general, including drinking cups for guests. I
walk or bike rather than drive to many desti-
nations and recycle paper and plastic shop-

My summer thermostat is set to 77, 63 in win-
ter. When I travel I set the gas hot water heat-
er to vacation mode. When I travel I shut off
the main water valve so no water is used and
if there is a leak, no water is wasted. I pur-
chase Energy Star appliances and have plans

I eat little meat and animal products, which I
have learned is good for my health and the
planet. I plant native plants and trees in my
yard and eliminate invasive ones like English

To eat food that might otherwise be thrown
away, we purchase veggies from Imperfect
Foods Also, divested from fossil fuels and buy
fair-trade coffee (if it's genuine fair trade, it
has a strong environmental compo-
nent).Things I hope to do are generate less
waste of all kinds, find a conscience-friendly
way to fly (e.g., offsets that are real), and de-
velop a deeper spiritual consciousness around

Because the best way to save energy is not to
use it, I insulated and sealed my attic and
crawl space to create a building envelope. I've
reduced my use of fossil fuels by installing so-
lar panels. To avoid attracting vermin to my
compost, I grind egg shells and produce

scraps with water before adding to compost.
While waiting for hot water from my faucet, I
fill a milk jug with the cold water and use it to
water plants. It's a chore that makes me
grateful for running water, and reminds me of
people who have to carry all their water in a

Have a contract with Arcadia Power so that
our electric usage draws on wind power. Only
run a full dishwasher. Turn off the lights when
not in the room and have LED lamps wherev-
er possible. Promote solar panels to whomev-
er listens, and Arcadia Power for wind ener-
gy .Have an organic vegetable garden and add
our compost. Drive an efficient 2005 Toyota
Corolla, concentrating on downhill trips to

on a colorful collection of wine bottles to dry.

ers through local farm markets and coops sold
in grocery stores. Donate to environmental
organizations and have most of our retire-
ment savings in socially responsible invest-
ments. Use cloth napkins for everyday meals
and no chemical cleaners. Continue to edu-
cate ourselves about “everything environmen-

I have furnished much of my home with
secondhand furnishings off Craig’s List. This
not only gives them a second life but brings
me joy. I love taking bus and Metro. It gives
me the gift of time to pray or read. The impact
of meat and dairy consumption is huge on the
planet. Many people aren’t willing to give up
meat completely – myself included – but we

I strive to have a great reverence for the
Earth, be in communion and thankful for
God’s creation, and to be a good steward of
the land I own. I drive a Prius but still try to
have at least 1 day a week of no driving. 95%
of our furniture is “early attic”. I try to not
purchase anything in plastic – hard to do. I
purchase locally grown veggies and fruit, and
blanch bulk veggies in the fall to freeze and
have throughout the year. I work with Citi-
zen’s Climate Lobby to advocate for legislation
to price carbon emissions. Being conscious of
how we live our lives in reverence to the Earth
is what we can do as individuals. We can ad-
vocate for government actions and create
change that will benefit us and our chil-

DE SAN FRANCISCO AL PAPA FRANCISCO La pasión ambiental del Papa Francisco refleja la profunda reverencia por la Tierra
de San Francisco (hermano Sol, hermana Luna) y nos llama a ser administradores

Lo que era un “desierto verde” de césped ahora es un oasis de flores silvestres que los pájaros, mariposas, insectos y otros tipos de vida silvestre visitan. Tengo un contrato con Arcadia Power para que nuestro uso de electricidad use la energía eólica (del viento). Uso la lavadora de platos solo cuando está llena. Apago las luces cuando no estoy en ese lugar y tengo lámparas LED donde es posible. Le hablo de la energía solar a quien me escuche y de Arcadia Power para la energía eólica. Tengo un huerto de vegeta-les ecológico y le añado nuestro abono. Con-duzco un Toyota Corolla del 2005 que consu-me menos combustible y ¡me concentro en viajes que van cuesta bajo para usar menos gasolina! – Luc deWulf

Me esfuerzo por respetar la Tierra, por estar en comunión con y agradecida por la creación de Dios y por ser una buena administradora de la tierra que poseo. Conduzco un Prius pe-ro de todas maneras trato de no conducir un día a la semana. El 95% de nuestros muebles vino de áticos. Trato de no comprar nada de plástico, lo cual es difícil. Compro vegetales y frutas locales y escaldo vegetales en volumen en el otoño para congelar y comer durante el año. Trabajo con el Lobby Climático de Ciuda-danos (Citizen’s Climate Lobby) para abogar por legislación para ponerle precio a las emi-siones de carbono. Como individuos, lo que podemos hacer es estar conscientes de cómo vivimos nuestras vidas en reverencia a la Tie-rra. Las pequeñas cosas que hago, ¿van a marcar una diferencia? Primero que nada, el actuar deliberadamente nos sensibiliza a lo que se necesita hacer y nos motiva a continuar haciéndolo. Segundo, el ejemplo que damos inspira a otros a hacer lo mismo. Tercero, acciones colectivas por muchas personas pueden efectuar un cambio – hasta una pequeña piedrecita crea una onda.

Message from Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington Respect Life Month 2020
October is traditionally observed in the Church across the United States as Respect Life Month. During this month, we pause and give thanks for the gift of human life.
This year's theme, “Live the Gospel of Life,” reminds us that authentic discipleship means choosing to see and serve Christ in all people, especially the unborn, the aged, the infirmed, the poor and the most vulnerable. May we continue to spread the Gospel of Life through the witness of our lives and always seek to do our part as God's holy family to proclaim consistently and courageously his truth in love.
This year, we also have the opportunity to take direct action in supporting the unborn and vulnerable by bring-ing our convictions with us into the voting booth. By participating in the political process as faithful citizens, we can give voice to the voiceless and remind our society that life is the foundation upon which all other rights are based.
We know that many suffer the pain caused by abortion. Especially at this time, I invite anyone who might be suffering the agony and aftermath of abortion to join our confidential Project Rachel ministry so that they may move forward with hope and healing.
Strengthened by our prayer, together in the light of Christ, I ask Mary our Mother to keep us all under her man-tle as we seek to live the Gospel of Life with hope and joy.

Octubre se ha observado tradicionalmente en la Iglesia de todos los Estados Unidos como el Mes del Respeto a la Vida. Durante este mes, nos detenemos a dar gracias por el don de la vida humana.
El tema de este año, Vive el Evangelio de la Vida, nos recuerda que el discipulado auténtico significa ver y servir a Cristo en todas las personas, sobre todo en los niños por nacer, las personas de edad, los enfermos, los pobres y los más vulnerables. Que sigamos predicando el Evangelio de la Vida mediante el testimonio de nuestra vida y que siempre busquemos hacer la parte que nos corresponde como santa familia de Dios para proclamar sin ce-sar y con valor su verdad en el amor.
Este año, también tenemos la oportunidad de actuar directamente para apoyar a los niños por nacer y a los vul-nerables al llevar nuestras convicciones a la cabina electoral. Al participar en el proceso político como ciuda-danos fieles, podemos dar voz a quienes carecen de ella y recordarle a nuestra sociedad que la vida es el funda-mento en el cual se basan todos los demás derechos.
Sabemos que muchas personas sufren el dolor causado por el aborto. Particularmente en este momento, invito a quienes podrían estar sufriendo la agonía y las secuelas del aborto a unirse a nuestro ministerio confidencial del Proyecto Raquel para que puedan seguir adelante con esperanza y sanación.
Fortalecidos por nuestra oración, juntos en la luz de Cristo, le ruego a María, Nuestra Madre, que nos cubra a todos con su manto mientras tratamos de vivir el Evangelio de la Vida con esperanza y alegría.
