PASTOR’S CORNER

Welcome one and all to the celebration of Holy Mass at Our Lady of the Mountains Parish. We are delighted that you joined us today. In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus’ calling of the first four apostles (two sets of brothers: Peter and Andrew, James and John). When Jesus called them that day on the Sea of Galilee, these apostles didn’t fully understand the nature of the summons. What it actually meant to be a “fisher of men” would only become clear to them with the passage of time and with the help of God’s grace. But even at this point—on the day the Lord called them—these four men knew they were being asked to follow someone very special and to do something extraordinary. Jesus trained them to be faithful disciples and eventually faithful fishers of men. During the period of their formation, Jesus scolded them for taking sides, for seeking positions of privilege. He taught them to fight not for the best seats, but for the towel, to be ambitious only to imitate Him in being the servant of all the rest. He stressed that to be great in the kingdom of heaven, they needed to keep His commandments and teach others to do the same. When Peter, Andrew, James and John left everything to follow Christ as his apostles, I definitely don’t think they left with frowns on their faces. They knew they were embarking on a new adventure, and I’m quite certain they were happy and excited about it. They couldn’t wait for it all to begin. Jesus promised them that they’ll be “fishers of men.” They left everything and followed Jesus. A priest is an instrument of Jesus Christ for the salvation of souls. Through the ministry of word and sacrament, a priest prepares human beings for their eternal destiny. Please pray for priestly vocations coming from our Parish. May you have a blessed week.
